ASSYRIAN INTERNATIONAL NEWS AGENCY (AINA): KARTMIN, TURKEY -- Christians have lived in these parts since the dawn of their faith. But they have had a rough couple of millennia, preyed on by Persian, Arab, Mongol, Kurdish and Turkish armies.
Each group tramped through the rocky highlands that now comprise Turkey's southeastern border with Iraq and Syria.
The current menace is less bellicose but is deemed a threat nonetheless. A group of state land surveyors and Muslim villagers are intent on shrinking the boundaries of an ancient monastery by more than half. The monastery, called Mor Gabriel, is revered by the Syriac Orthodox Church.
Battling to hang on to the monastic lands, Bishop Timotheus Samuel Aktas is fortifying his defenses. He's hired two Turkish lawyers -- one Muslim, one Christian -- and mobilized support from foreign diplomats, clergy and politicians.
Also giving a helping hand, says the bishop, is Saint Gabriel, a predecessor as abbot who died in the seventh century: "We still have four of his fingers." Locked away for safekeeping, the sacred digits are treasured as relics from the past -- and a hex on enemies in the present.
The outcome of the land dispute is now in the hands of a Turkish court. RIGHT SIDE NEWS: UNITED NATIONS -- For the last nine years, the U.N.'s annual ban on defaming Islam has been non-binding. In March, the United Nations may try to impose its view on Islamic blasphemy on all of its member nations -- including the United States -- thus making criticism of Islam a crime.
In December, the U.N. General Assembly, as it has every year since 1999, passed a resolution titled "Combating Defamation of Religions." The vote was 86-53, with 42 nations abstaining. The United States opposed the measure.
Originally titled "Defamation of Islam," the name of the resolution has changed over the years but not the intent. The only religion mentioned in the seven-page document is Islam.
The resolution's main sponsor is the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference. Critics charge the OIC's membership, which includes Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia, reads like a Who's Who of religious intolerance.

THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama will visit Turkey next month, fulfilling a campaign pledge to travel to a Muslim country during his first 100 days in power.
Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, made the announcement on Saturday as she met with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, seeking to enlist Turkish help in moving forward the Middle East peace process.
Mr Obama's visit to Turkey will be an opening step in his long-standing promise to improve relations with the Muslim world. The visit, which will follow the G20 summit in London on April 2, is expected to coincide with the Second Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations, due to be held in Istanbul on April 6 and 7. The forum seeks to "address some of the ongoing tensions and divides across cultures and religions".
Making a major speech there on US-Muslim relations will enable Mr Obama to tick off another campaign promise. THE GUARDIAN: When the Iraqi journalist, Muntazar al-Zaidi, hurled his shoes at the then-US president, George Bush, in December, Iranian officials declared him a hero and hailed his gesture as a mark of Islamic courage.
They were presumably less impressed this week when Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was similarly targeted during a visit to the north-western city of Urumiye.
Ahmadinejad found the shoe on the other foot as he waved to the crowd from an open-top car on his way to give a speech at a local stadium.

Ancien haut fonctionnaire de la Banque mondiale et du Fonds monétaire international, Salam Fayyad a été nommé en juin 2007 après le limogeage du gouvernement formé par le Hamas. Le mouvement islamiste, qui a remporté les élections parlementaires palestiniennes en janvier 2006, a toujours considéré illégitime le gouvernement de M. Fayyad et estimé que le seul cabinet légal était celui d'Ismaïl Haniyeh.

RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE: A British campaigning group has hit out at plans that would allow current financial arrangements to be altered to allow Sharia-compliant bonds to be issued.
The warning comes from two bodies, the Christian Legal Centre and Christian Concern for Our Nation (CCFON). They spoke out after changes were recommended to the Legislative Framework for the Regulation of Alternative Finance Investment Bonds (Sukuk). They say that if the changes are accommodated, the British Government would be ‘capitulating’ to Islamic religious law.
The subject of Sharia law has been hotly debated in the UK following comments by the Archbishop of Canterbury when he said that it "seems inevitable" that some parts of sharia would be enshrined in this country's legal code. Earlier this week the former Prime Minister Tony Blair backed the Archbishop. He commented in The Church of England Newspaper: "I thought at the time all this was a lot of fuss over nothing."

TIMES ONLINE: A new US-led initiative to reshape the political landscape of the Middle East starts tomorrow with the first senior American envoys arriving in Syria after years of isolation.
Jeffrey Feltman, the acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East, and Dan Shapiro, of the National Security Council, are due to arrive in Damascus for preliminary talks with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, the first such high-level delegation since 2005.
With Iran on the verge of developing a nuclear capability, the West is moving swiftly to draw its main regional ally away and lure it into renewed peace talks with Israel, changing a dynamic in which Damascus is a central component of Iranian influence across the Middle East.
In the interlocking jigsaw of Middle East politics, Syria is a vital link between Iran and its affiliated militias in Lebanon and Gaza. It provides a hub for funds, men and weapons to be channelled into Lebanon for the vehemently anti-Israeli Hezbollah movement, while also supporting a base for Hamas’s most senior leaders in exile. It has also played a key role in allowing foreign jihadists to enter Iraq and attack the US forces and their Iraqi allies there, causing years of havoc.
However, it came close to securing a peace deal with Israel almost a decade ago, and hopes are rising again that ending the isolation of the Bush years and actively engaging the repressive Baathist regime might cause a detente with the West.
At a Gaza donors' conference in Egypt this week, Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, shook hands with Walid Moualem, her Syrian counterpart, a clear sign of a thaw in relations. THE TELEGRAPH: Andrea Orcel, a London-based banking executive who worked for Merrill Lynch, is under investigation after receiving $36 million (£25.5m) in pay and bonuses last year.
Mr Orcel is one of seven senior executives from investment bankers Merrill Lynch subpoenaed by the New York Attorney General over bonuses.
Andrew Cuomo is investigating $3.6 bn (£2.5 bn) in bonuses paid by Merrill shortly before it was bought out by Bank of America (BoA) last September.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Mr Orcel, 45, the company's top investment banker, and nine other colleagues got a total of $209m (£148m) in cash and stocks in 2008 at a time when Merrill's net loss rose to $27.6 bn (£19.5bn) and it had to be bailed out by the American taxpayer.
Mr Orcel has worked on some of the world's biggest investment-banking deals in recent years, including the highly damaging Royal Bank of Scotland takeover of the Dutch bank ABN Amro in 2007, a deal for which he was paid a $12m (£8.5m) bonus.

The verdict in Luxembourg amounts to a defeat for Age Concern's legal battle to banish enforced retirement at 65, but the final decision still rests with the UK High Court.
The European Court of Justice acknowledged that EU rules do ban employment discrimination on grounds of age but ruled the age could be enforced if it was related to employment policy or if it would help the labour market.
The High Court, which sent the case to Luxembourg for clarification of the law, will now have to make a final ruling on whether the aims of the Government's 65 retirement age are "legitimate".

Confronté à un déficit de 41 millions de dollars, le Golden State n'a tout simplement plus les moyens de payer ses employés à temps plein. «Avec cette mesure (qui touche environ 200 000 fonctionnaires), je perds environ 9,5 % de mon salaire, précise Catherine. Mais je m'estime encore heureuse de travailler.» Vingt mille fonctionnaires pourraient recevoir une lettre de licenciement dans les prochaines semaines.
La situation n'est guère plus brillante pour les enseignants. Les coupes claires dans les budgets de l'éducation propulseront dès septembre prochain des milliers d'entre eux au chômage. Sudans Präsident Omar al-Baschir hat den Internationalen Strafgerichtshof (IStGH) in Den Haag als „Instrument des Neo-Kolonialismus“ kritisiert. Der Sudan werde seit 20 Jahren von einem neuen Kolonialismus und „dessen Instrumenten wie dem IStGH“ unterdrückt, rief Baschir am Donnerstag tausenden Demonstranten in der sudanesischen Hauptstadt Khartum zu. „Die Kriminellen sind die Führer der USA und Europas“, sagte der Staatschef einen Tag nach der Ausstellung des Haftbefehls gegen ihn durch den IStGH.
Baschir warf den USA vor, Völkermorde begangen zu haben, und berief sich dabei auf die indianischen Ureinwohner des Landes, den US-Atombombenabwurf auf Hiroshima und den Vietnam-Krieg. Auf dem Platz der Märtyrer im Zentrum Karthums hatten sich am Morgen mehr als 5000 Menschen versammelt, um gegen den zu protestieren. Sie zeigten Bilder Baschirs und wetterten in Sprechchören gegen die USA, Großbritannien, die Juden und den Chefankläger des Strafgerichtshofs, Luis Moreno-Ocampo.
Der sudanesische UN-Botschafter Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamed verurteilte den Haftbefehl gegen Baschir in scharfer Form. Das sei ein „Rezept für Unglück und Anarchie“, erklärte Mohamed. Sein Land werde sich aber nicht länger um die Aussetzung des Haftbefehls bemühen, was bislang angestrebt wurde. En tuant le cinéaste, le meurtrier a laissé dans son dos, sous un poignard, une liste de personnes à éliminer. Le nom d'Ayaan Hirsi Ali, la scénariste du film, y figurait tout en haut.
Depuis, la jeune femme d'origine somalienne vit sous haute sécurité. Elle ne va nulle part sans des gardes armés. Avant de la rencontrer, à Montréal, les représentants de La Presse ont dû répondre à un interrogatoire de son garde du corps.
La menace qui plane sur elle n'a cependant jamais réduit Ayaan Hirsi Ali au silence. Auteure de deux livres, dont Infidèle, des mémoires dans lesquels elle raconte son enfance en Somalie dans une famille musulmane dévote, ainsi que son exil aux Pays-Bas pour éviter un mariage forcé, la jeune femme a été au coeur de plus d'une controverse. FOX NEWS: NEW YORK — An education expert is warning that some American textbooks present a biased view of Islam and offer a sugarcoated picture of Islamic extremism, a trend that has parents worried about what's being taught in public schools.
In numerous history textbooks, "key subjects like jihad, Islamic law, the status of women are whitewashed," said Gilbert T. Sewall, director of the American Textbook Council, an independent group that reviews history books and other education materials.
Cindy Ross, the mother of a junior high school student in Marin County, Calif., said she couldn't believe her eyes when she read her son's textbook last school year.
"I was very shocked by what I saw, looking through the book," she said — shocked at how Islam was portrayed in her son's seventh grade history text.
"What did strike me was that all the other religions seemed to be lumped together, where there is an inordinate emphasis on Islam specifically," Ross said.
Sewall claims that publishers have been pressured by Islamic activists to portray the religion in the most favorable light, while Islamic terrorism is downplayed or glossed over.

ASIAONE NEWS: KUALA LUMPUR - An ethnic Chinese Malaysian has gone to court to fight the secret conversion of his 15-month-old daughter by his estranged Muslim convert wife, his lawyer said Thursday.
Carpenter Hoo Ying Soon, 28, is also challenging the temporary custody granted to his wife by a sharia court in this Muslim-majority nation.
Lawyer Tang Jay Son told AFP Hoo only learned of his wife and child's secret conversion two days ago through a sharia court notice, which said the woman had become a Muslim on January 28 and his infant daughter on February 3.
"They also served him an interim court order... that grants the wife a temporary custody over the child and the reason for that is because the child is already a Muslim," Tang said.
"But we have to bear in mind that the child was converted to Islam without Hoo's knowledge and consent as a father."
The couple - originally both Buddhists who married in 2007 and live in central Negri Sembilan state- separated in September last year, the lawyer said.

As far as markets are concerned, this is World War Three. Share prices have fallen so far and fast in the United States that they are back where they were when Bill Clinton was finishing his first term and John Major was still clinging on to power. Despite a small pick-up yesterday, the sense of misery and resignation remains so pervasive that US markets are now priced for either world war or full-scale depression.
Stocks are better value than they have been for all 1,680 months since 1870 save for brief periods in 1920 (post-WWI adaptation), 1932 (Great Depression), 1942 (WWII) and 1982 (stagflation hangover), according to calculations on the US markets from Lombard Street Research.
Observing this recession is rather like watching slow-motion footage of a car crash. And at the front bumper of the vehicle are share prices and money growth. Shares started really sliding last autumn, just before the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers coincided with a sudden and unprecedented collapse in world trade. But the impact of the collision is still travelling through the frame of the car, shattering individuals' fortunes with inexorable inevitability as it passes on. Investors have abandoned the markets because of their fright about the slide in profits and the rise in redundancies that lie ahead in the coming months.
Yet for all the sound and fury, the full scale of the impact has yet to be felt. It will only be at the end of this year, when unemployment is closer to three million than two million, that we will truly know how it feels to be in the thick of a recession. NRC HANDELSBLAD INTERNATIONAL: Banks have to go back to the basics of their business of saving and lending, says Dutch princess Máxima. The former banker spoke at a symposium on social banking on Tuesday.
Princess Máxima had nothing good to say about her former colleagues, bankers who have plunged the world into a deep financial crisis. At a meeting organised by Triodos Bank in the Dutch town of Zeist, Máxima said on Tuesday that bankers had lost sight of the core values of their profession. With "overzealous marketing" practices they sold inappropriate loans to vulnerable consumers who did not know what they were getting into. The financial crisis was due in part to these kinds of practices. "Only now we are starting to have some insight in the real extent of the consequences of the last months," the princess said.
Before Máxima met crown prince Willem Alexander ten years ago, she worked as a commercial banker in New York for banks such as Deutsche Bank and HSBC. Máxima gave her talk on Tuesday to mark the founding of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, an alliance of twelve financial institutions focused on social banking and microfinance, including Triodos Bank.

Over the past three years Máxima has served on a UN advisory group for microfinance: the issuing of loans to poor people or starting entrepreneurs in developing countries. The essence of banking, says Máxima, consists of trust, building long-term relationships and offering financial products that have added value. "Neglecting these values seems to be at the heart of the causes of the crisis."
She appealed to governments to set up a "'light touch' but adequate system of market regulation" and to offer consumers financial education, so that they can better understand the financial products they are offered. The slip-up, which is being circulated in clips on the Internet, occurred at a joint press conference.
"There is a big increase in the number of Spanish tourists heading to Russia, the number is at 500,000, we have therefore decided to sign an agreement to stimulate, to favour, to f---," he said, pausing briefly before ending the sentence with "to support this tourism".
In Spanish the expression "para follar," meaning "to f---," is pronounced very similarly to the expression "para apoyar," or "to support".

REUTERS: BUENOS AIRES - In an effort to reduce the church's political influence, Argentine atheists and feminists are spearheading a drive to get people who were baptized Roman Catholic but disagree with the church's politics to formally renounce their faith.
The "Not in my Name" Internet campaign, also called Collective Apostasy, encourages people who are Catholic in name only to write to the bishops where they were baptized to officially register that they have left the church.
Latin America is home to about half of the world's Roman Catholics but many people who were baptized Catholic do not practice the religion.
"The church counts all those who've been baptized as Catholic and lobbies for legislation based on that number, so we're trying to convey the importance of people expressing that they no longer belong to the church," said campaigner Ariel Bellino, a member of an atheist group and a former Catholic.
Some 200 people signed onto the campaign on Monday, when it was first launched, and another 500 people signed up on Tuesday at www.apostasiacolectiva.org, Bellino said.
He said a similar drive was waged in Spain, where leftist movements have a historical anti-clerical streak, and in Chile.
Apostasy in the Roman Catholic Church is defined as the total and obstinate repudiation of the faith.
More than three-quarters of Argentina's 40 million residents define themselves as Catholic, according to a survey done by state researchers last year. But of that group, only about 20 percent say they regularly attend mass.
The country's relatively liberal social mores clash with Catholic doctrine on birth control, abstinence before marriage and homosexuality. PRESS TV: Far-right Belgian politician Filip Dewinter has written an anti-Islam book, describing the region [sic?] as modern Europe's main problem.
Head of the Flemish Vlaams Belang party Dewinter - who is known for his support of Islamophobia and alleged sympathy for Israel in the opposition - argues in the book that the influence of Islam in Europe should be stemmed and describes Islamophobia as "an obligation."
He says this could materialize by barring immigrants from Muslim nations from entering Europe and imposing strict controls on the residing Muslims.
The book titled Insha'Allah? The Islamization of Europe is to go on sale Monday, EuropeNews reported.

THE STAR ONLINE: GENEVA - European countries signalled on Wednesday that they feared the universal right of free speech would be at risk if a United Nations conference on racism next month issues a call for a ban on "defamation of religion".
They also warned in speeches to the U.N.'s Human Rights Council that they could not accept any pillorying of Israel as "racist" nor any promotion of anti-Semitism at the Geneva gathering from April 20-24.
"The freedom of expression must be the cornerstone of our fight against racism," Sweden's delegate Frank Belfrage said. Britain's Human Rights Minister Mark Malloch Brown said limiting free speech would undermine tolerance.
Similar views have been expressed in the Council this week by Australia, France, Switzerland, Poland, Netherlands, Germany, and the Czech Republic speaking for the 27-nation European Union, among others.
The issues of freedom of speech and anti-Semitism have been set by Western countries, including the United States, as among their "red lines" for participation in the gathering, dubbed Durban II.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, who will preside over the conference, has sought to reassure doubters, arguing fears of anti-Semitic outbursts are unfounded.

Eigentlich sind sich alle einig: Die Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD) ist eine gefährliche rechtsextremistische Organisation, in der gewaltbereite Neonazis eine Heimat finden. Seit Montag befasst sich der Petitionsausschuss des Bundestags mit einer Eingabe von 175 000 Bürgern, die ein Verbot der Partei fordern – aber noch ohne Ergebnis. Dennoch erklärte der Vorsitzende des Bundestagsinnenausschusses, Sebastian Edathy (SPD), am Montag resigniert, er rechne nicht damit, dass die Grosse Koalition einen Anlauf für ein Verbot nehme. Es fehle den Parteien an der nötigen Einigkeit.
Der Grund dafür: Das Verfassungsgericht hatte 2003 gefordert, dass die Geheimdienste vor dem Prozess ihre Verbindungsleute in der Parteiführung abschalten müssten. Die Innenminister von CDU und CSU befürchten, dass der Staatsschutz dadurch blind würde, und lehnen den Schritt ab. THE JERUSALEM POST: The Alliance for Austria's Future, an extremist anti-immigrant party founded by Jörg Haider, won 45.6 percent of the vote on Sunday in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia.
The Austrian media termed the outcome a "posthumous triumph" for Haider, who died over four months ago in a high-speed car crash in Carinthia that occurred when he was driving intoxicated.
Haider founded the Alliance party in 2005 and had served as governor of the southern Alpine state for 10 years and was active in the state's politics since 1979.
Haider's widow, Claudia Haider, presented a photo of her husband to the Alliance's re-elected candidate for governor, Gerhard Dörfler, at the party celebration on Sunday. In Kärnten erreichte das von Jörg Haider gegründete Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ) einen grandiosen Wahlsieg. Hinter dem Erfolg steckt Lebensmensch Stefan Petzner.
Stefan Petzner ist der stille Sieger dieser Wahl, schreibt die Tageszeitung «Österreich». Denn der BZÖ-Politiker, der seinen Wegbegleiter Jörg Haider nach dessen Tod als Lebensmensch bezeichnete, war für den Wahlkampf verantwortlich. Und er hat ihn hervorragend geleitet, wie er übrigens auch selber findet: «Das war für mich der schwierigste Wahlkampf aller Zeiten – aber ich habe noch jeden gewonnen, den ich geführt habe.»
«Wir passen auf dein Kärnten auf»
Seine beste Idee: Am Ende des Wahlkampfes setzte Petzner und sein Team auf ein schlichtes Plakat mit einem an Jörg Haider adressiert Slogan: «Wir passen auf dein Kärnten auf.» Das erwies sich als Geniestreich, wie «Österreich» schreibt.
Mit diesem furiosen Erfolg dürfte Petzner bei seinen Parteifreunden wieder rehabilitiert sein. Nach dem Tod Jörg Haiders wurde er wegen seinen emotionalen Medienauftritten kritisiert. >>> bru | Montag, 2. Marz 2009

BBC: Immigration Minister Phil Woolas has accused the Office for National Statistics of "playing politics" with population figures.
He said he was "appalled" at the release of figures showing one in nine British residents was born abroad.
In a letter Mr Woolas describes the decision to release the data as "at best naive or, at worst, sinister".
The Tories have accused the government of "bullying" the ONS and trying to "suppress" embarrassing information.
And Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne said the Home Office should get their "tanks off the statisticians' lawn".
The ONS declined to comment on Mr Woolas's intervention.
Downing Street denied the government was trying to intimidate the statistics body, saying the prime minister fully supported its independence.
But the prime minister's official spokesman said the ONS had to be aware of "the sensitivities" surrounding the immigration debate and the government was "questioning" the timing of the release of data which "can have a political bearing". >>> | Wednesday, March 4, 2009
