Canadian Parliament Passes Anti-Islamophobia Motion
The Canadian parliament has passed a landmark anti-Islamophobia and religious discrimination motion that calls on politicians to condemn anti-Islamic behaviour and rhetoric.
The vote follows months of fierce debate in Canada, including protests from both the motion’s supporters and detractors.
Opponents argued the private members’ motion, which calls on the government to “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination”, will limit free speech in the country and single out Islam for special treatment. Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau Face Off Over Niqab Debate
Niqabs ‘Rooted in a Culture That Is Anti-women,’ Harper Says
Prime Minister Stephen Harper answers a question during Question Period in the House of Commons in Ottawa on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. |
The Prime Minister was responding in the House of Commons to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who has sharply criticized the Tories for seeking to ban the covering of women’s faces when they are swearing a citizenship oath and has accused Mr. Harper of Islamophobia.
Mr. Trudeau responded outside the Commons Tuesday by declaring that “this government is doubling down on the politics of fear.”
A debate over reasonable accommodation in Canada is playing out again, this time over the niqab. Mr. Harper is arguing, as a Conservative fundraising e-mail recently put it, that is “not the way we do things here,” while Mr. Trudeau is championing religious freedom as protected by the Charter of Rights.
Some Muslim women wear face-covering niqabs in public, and the Liberals defend their right to wear the veil during citizenship ceremonies. Mr. Harper, whose government is appealing a Federal Court ruling that would allow people to cover their face while reciting the oath of citizenship, strongly disagrees. » | Steven Chase | Ottawa | Pub. Young Canadian’s Conversion to Radical Islam Leaves Family Devastated
His father thinks he’s lost. His brother holds out hope. But no one in Harun Abdurahman’s family knows how to turn around the young Canadian man who has become an unapologetic supporter of the Islamic State terrorist group.
Born in Ontario to a Christian family steeped in military tradition, the Manitoba resident told the Star in an earlier interview that he believed last fall’s terror attacks on Parliament Hill and in Quebec were “justified” retribution for Canadian military aggression against ISIS.
“I think a lot of Canadians need to wake up and understand that we’re doing this and worse to other people in other countries,” said Abdurahman, who agreed to be identified only by an online pseudonym that he has adopted.
He spoke about his convictions, his belief that all Muslims should emigrate to Syria and Iraq, where the Islamic State has declared a caliphate governed by Sharia law and of learning that he was under investigation by Canadian spies who saw him as a potential threat to national security.
But this turn of events has also had a devastating impact on Abdurahman’s family. Beginning last December, Canadian Security Intelligence Service agents interviewed his ex-girlfriend and older brother in Ontario as well as his father, who is a serving member of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Alberta. The agents carried with them a thick file on the young man.
This week, however, the spy agency told family members they had intensified their investigation. » | Allan Woods | Quebec Bureau | Sunday, March 08, 2015
Harper Says Majority of ‘Moderate Muslims’ Support View on Niqab Ban
The Prime Minister, who upset some Muslim Canadians this week by saying the face-covering niqab is “rooted in a culture that is anti-woman,” stood up in the Commons Wednesday to enumerate support for his government’s campaign to ban the use of the veil when taking the oath of Canadian citizenship. A small minority of Muslim women wear the niqab in Canada.
He listed groups such as the Coalition of Progressive Canadian Muslim Organizations, which, Mr. Harper told the Commons, have declared: “Most Canadians believe that it is offensive that someone would hide their identity at the very moment where they are committing to join the Canadian family.” » | Steven Chase | Wednesday, March 11, 2015

CBC NEWS | WINDSOR: Number of Muslims in Canada is set to triple by the year 2030
While many religions are dealing with flat or shrinking memberships in Windsor, the local Muslim community is growing . Numbers are up due in part to converts.
According to Mohamed Mohamed, the Imam at Windsor Mosque, approximately three people come to the mosque every month looking to convert.
"When anyone comes to us, he will be one of us. It's as simple as that," he said.
According to the Pew Research Center Forum on Religion and Public Life, the number of Muslims in Canada is set to triple by the year 2030.
It is projected that there will be 2.7 million Muslims in Canada by then, up roughly 940,000 from 2011. » | CBC News | Tuesday, May 07, 2013

CBC NEWS (MONTREAL): Son, now in Syria, on Canadian spy agency's watch list
The mother of one of the 50 to 60 Canadians being monitored by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) because of alleged terrorist activities abroad says she no longer recognizes her own son.
The Quebec woman, who agreed to speak to CBC News on condition she remain anonymous for her own safety, said she wants to warn other parents about the risks awaiting young Muslims like her son.
She said after her son converted to Islam, he was recruited online by a radical Islamist group.
'An easy target'
The woman said her son was by nature a pacifist but was perhaps an easy target.
"They played on his generous nature," she says, adding she watched her son change gradually after he converted.
"He stopped listening to music because it was a sin," she says. "He started to cut off contact with girls, then later, with boys who didn't share his vision."
She said he became more and more critical of Canadian society, saying, "Canadian laws are not good. It's Sharia law that should be applied."
"He is convinced that jihad is a part of the religion," she said, adding he told his parents he wanted them both to "burn in hell" if they did not convert as well. » | CBC News | Monday, March 04, 2013

JTA: TORONTO (JTA) -- A Canadian Islamic organization is accusing a Toronto-area Jewish day school of using a textbook that vilifies Muslims.
In a Nov. 19 letter to Jewish groups, the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR-CAN, charges that a textbook used at the Joe Dwek Ohr HaEmet Sephardic School employs "inflammatory and hateful terms in describing Muslims."
CAIR-CAN alleges that the book, "2000 Years of Jewish History," describes Muslims as "rabid fanatics" with "savage beginnings."
"The entire chapter devoted to Islam presents a pernicious and extreme portrayal of Muslims and the Islamic faith. The material further denigrates the Prophet Muhammad as a 'rabid Jew-hater,' and falsely portrays Islam as inherently anti-Semitic and devoted to hating Jews," the group said in its letter to the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center For Holocaust Studies and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, or CIJA. » | Thursday, November 22, 2012

CTV NEWS: TORONTO — The Toronto District School Board has forbidden a controversial Islamic school from operating out of one of its properties.
The board revoked the permit for the East End Madrassah, a Sunday school for Muslim children, citing an ongoing police investigation into alleged anti-Semitic course material.
East End Madrassah came under fire earlier this month after Jewish groups objected to material posted on its website.
A curriculum document compared Judaism with Nazism and said that "treacherous jews" had killed Islam's Prophet.
TDSB spokeswoman Shari Schwartz-Maltz says East End Madrassah will have to find a new meeting place until the police investigation is complete, adding the board has also requested a meeting with school officials to ensure their teachings are in line with the board's policies.
Schwartz-Maltz says East End Madrassah complied willingly and was quick to apologize for the controversy.
"We've had a relationship with the organization for about 30 years, and in that 30 years we've had no complaints whatsoever," she said.
Jewish groups praised the board's decision, calling it an excellent first step. » | The Canadian Press | Thursday, May 17, 2012

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: A Toronto-area Islamic organization is facing a police investigation over a Sunday school text that compares Judaism with Nazism and writes that “treacherous” Jews “conspired to kill” Mohammed.
The East End madrassah has apologized for the statements, removed them from its website and pledged to review all its teaching material to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Asked about the materials Tuesday, premier Dalton McGuinty told reporters: “There is no room for hatred or intolerance in this province.” » | Adrian Morrow | Tuesday, May 08, 2012
