JTA: TORONTO (JTA) -- A speaking engagement by American anti-Islamic firebrand Pamela Geller was moved following police intervention.
Geller, a vocal critic of radical Islam, was due to speak May 13 at a Chabad synagogue in Thornhill, north of Toronto, but the synagogue's rabbi, Mendel Kaplan, backed out after a visit by the hate crimes unit of local police.
“Rabbi Kaplan decided to cancel Ms. Geller's appearance, as it would place him in conflict with the values of our organization, which support a safe, welcoming and inclusive community for all," read a statement issued May 2 by the York Regional Police. Kaplan also serves as a police chaplain. » | Sunday, May 05, 2013

THE GUARDIAN: Former cricket captain turned politician detained on flight from Canada to New York to be questioned over his views on jihad
Imran Khan, the former Pakistan cricket captain turned politician, was taken off an international flight from Canada to New York and questioned by US immigration officials over his views on drone strikes and jihad.
Khan, who has been at the forefront of a high-profile campaign as leader of the Pakistan Movement for Justice party (PTI) to end US drone strikes in northern Pakistan, had been in Canada to give a speech and was on his way to a fundraising dinner in the US on Friday.
Khan recently attempted to lead a high-profile march into south Waziristan which included US peace activists from the Code Pink group with some 15,000 of his supporters.
He claims that the drone strikes kill large numbers of innocent civilians – a claim denied by the US.
"I was taken off from plane and interrogated by US Immigration in Canada on my views on drones. My stance is known. Drone attacks must stop," Khan tweeted yesterday after his questioning.
He added: "Missed flight and sad to miss the fundraising lunch in NY but nothing will change my stance."
A US state department spokeswoman confirmed Khan's questioning. "We are aware that Imran Khan was briefly delayed in Toronto before boarding the next flight to the United States," she told Pakistani media.
"The issue was resolved. Mr Khan is welcome in the United States." » | Peter Beaumont | Saturday, October 27, 2012

CTV NEWS: TORONTO — The Toronto District School Board has forbidden a controversial Islamic school from operating out of one of its properties.
The board revoked the permit for the East End Madrassah, a Sunday school for Muslim children, citing an ongoing police investigation into alleged anti-Semitic course material.
East End Madrassah came under fire earlier this month after Jewish groups objected to material posted on its website.
A curriculum document compared Judaism with Nazism and said that "treacherous jews" had killed Islam's Prophet.
TDSB spokeswoman Shari Schwartz-Maltz says East End Madrassah will have to find a new meeting place until the police investigation is complete, adding the board has also requested a meeting with school officials to ensure their teachings are in line with the board's policies.
Schwartz-Maltz says East End Madrassah complied willingly and was quick to apologize for the controversy.
"We've had a relationship with the organization for about 30 years, and in that 30 years we've had no complaints whatsoever," she said.
Jewish groups praised the board's decision, calling it an excellent first step. » | The Canadian Press | Thursday, May 17, 2012

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: A Toronto-area Islamic organization is facing a police investigation over a Sunday school text that compares Judaism with Nazism and writes that “treacherous” Jews “conspired to kill” Mohammed.
The East End madrassah has apologized for the statements, removed them from its website and pledged to review all its teaching material to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Asked about the materials Tuesday, premier Dalton McGuinty told reporters: “There is no room for hatred or intolerance in this province.” » | Adrian Morrow | Tuesday, May 08, 2012

CBC NEWS: The financial dispute between an Islamic bank and about 200 families whose mortgages are in limbo, moved to a Toronto courtroom on Thursday.
The homeowners had interest-free mortgages with United Muslim Financial totalling about $32 million.
Since 2005, UM Financial has offered loans and mortgages to people who want to adhere strictly to Islamic (Shariah) law, under which no interest can be charged on a loan.
The court will now decide what to do with those mortgages.
UM Financial was ordered into receivership on Oct. 7. » | CBC News | Friday, November 11, 2011

NATIONAL POST: A British right-wing group responsible for a wave of violent anti-Islamist street protests in the United Kingdom will attempt to spread its message to Canadians at a rally in Toronto next week.
A "support rally" for the controversial English Defence League is scheduled to take place at the Toronto Zionist Centre on Tuesday night. The event is being organized by the Jewish Defence League of Canada.
Tommy Robinson, the EDL leader, will speak at the rally through an online hookup. It is believed to be the first Canadian rally for the EDL, repeatedly linked to violence since it formed in 2009 to counter Islamist militancy in Britain.
"I am disappointed that the JDL would support an organization whose record in the U.K. is one of violence and extremism," said Bernie Farber, CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress. "This is more than unwise and I sure hope they reconsider this decision.”
Dozens have been arrested at EDL protests, including Mr. Robinson, an alias used by Stephen Lennon. He was charged in November with assaulting a police officer at a confrontation with Islamists who burned poppies during a two-minute silence for veterans.
"The root cause of the problem is the Koran, it's Islam," he told the BBC on Nov. 19. "And no one has got the balls to admit it and say it and talk about it. We will. We're not creating these divisions and this extremism. It's already there. That's why we formed. If there was no militant Islam there would be no EDL." >>> Stewart Bell, National Post | Thursday, January 06, 2011
