Germany Investigates Suspected Terrorists Posing as Migrants

THE TELEGRAPH: Migrants pose a domestic security threat as thousands continue to enter Germany, says the German police chief

Germany is examining 10 cases of refugees accused of being a member of a terror organisation or taking part in war crimes abroad in an admission by the country’s police chief that will raise fears of terrorists among migrants.

Holger Muench, head of the BKA federal police, said that the influx of refugees posed a domestic security threat as migrants continued to cross into the country.

More than 8,000 streamed over the Austrian border to Bavaria on Wednesday and officials believe up to 800,000 migrants could enter the country by the end of year. Some predict it could be as high as one million.

Many of the migrants coming to Europe via the western Balkans route through central and eastern Europe are from war zones in the Middle East. Those fleeing to Germany were encouraged by Angela Merkel’s welcoming comments earlier this year, saying that Syrians would be given refugee status. » | Raziye Akkoc, and Melanie Hall, Berlin | Thursday, October 29, 2015

'Terrorist Don't Move by Timetable, Our Borders Completely Open' - Former German Deputy Defense Minister

The unending influx of migrants has reinvigorated fears that Islamic State fighters could be hiding among the crowds storming Europe's borders. Some reports suggest that thousands of extremists have already been smuggled in. Germany's Federal Intelligence Service chief Gerhard Schindler said that terrorists would rather travel by plane on forged documents than use overcrowded migrant routes. But a former German Deputy Defence Minister Willy Wimmer doesn't quite buy that.

'Pray for the Kenya Terrorists': Archbishop of Canterbury Faces Controversy after Urging People Not to Forget the 'Captors' in Their Prayers

MAIL ONLINE: Justin Welby reveals he has prayed for both the gunmen and victims / Archbishop says what he has done is in line with Jesus's teachings / Ten Britons now feared to be among the victims of attack in Nairobi

The Archbishop of Canterbury today urged Christians around the world to pray for the terrorists who brutally killed at least 67 in Nairobi.

Justin Welby told worshippers not to forget 'the captors' in their prayers, so they can see that violence 'won't have the last word'.

He revealed that he himself had prayed for both the gunmen and the victims, and said that to do so was in line with Jesus Christ's teachings. Read on and comment » | Daniel Martin | Thursday, September 26, 2013

Sudden Religiosity And Mysterious Trips: Clues That Build Up Boston Attacks Case

THE OBSERVER: Tsarnaev brothers fit the key indicators of potential threat: young, male, first-generation migrants with 'identity issues'

Security services have learned much about Islamic extremist violence in recent years. "Profiling" has been rejected as too blunt to be of much use, but it's clear that it almost exclusively involves men, aged 18 to 30, and often first generation immigrants with what are broadly and inadequately dubbed "identity issues". A key indicator of potential threat is also a close family member already involved in extremism. Those apparently responsible for the Boston bombings fit all these parameters: two brothers, aged 19 and 26, who spent much of their lives in the US but were clearly deeply attracted to the culture of their Chechen parents.

Beyond the "who?" is the "how?", and the counter-terrorist community have also learned to watch for signs such as a sudden increase in religious practice and unexplained trips overseas to south or central Asia. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of the two, travelled last year to Russia and, it is thought, Dagestan, where he and his family once lived. He had also become more obviously devout, a family friend told the Boston Globe. A neighbour said he had abandoned sharp western clothes.

Terrorists are not loners either. Tamerlan was married and had a small child. Mohammad Sidique Khan, the leader of the 7/7 bombers, left a young daughter. Militancy is, after all, a social activity. Terrorists are not unhinged, studies have shown, nor necessarily badly integrated, though in this case Tamerlan appears to have had trouble making friends in the US. Most believe, however misguidedly, that their deeds will be hailed after their deaths. » | Jason Burke | Saturday, April 20, 2013

Canadians in Algeria Attack Went Overseas with 3rd Man

CBC NEWS CANADA: Aaron Yoon was classmate of Katsiroubas, Medlej at London, Ont., high school

A special CBC News investigation has uncovered the identity of a third member of a group of former London, Ont., high school friends now at the centre of a horrifying tale of young Canadians getting mixed up with al-Qaeda and international militants.

CBC News has learned that Aaron Yoon, now about 24, is likely the only survivor among this perverse band of brothers, two of whom died while staging a bloody attack on an Algerian oil refinery three months ago.

International intelligence sources say Yoon, a Canadian of Korean descent, flew to North Africa with three others, but wound up in jail before the al-Qaeda attack in January that killed 37 refinery workers in Algeria.

Two of Yoon’s former London schoolmates, Xris Katsiroubas and Ali Medlej, were among several dozen al-Qaeda-linked militants involved in the attack.

Sources say the two probably blew themselves up at the end of the four-day siege, but only one could be identified through DNA tests. » | Greg Weston, National Affairs Specialist | CBC News | Tuesday, April 02, 2013

Quebec Mother Of Terror Suspect Warns Other Parents

CBC NEWS (MONTREAL): Son, now in Syria, on Canadian spy agency's watch list

The mother of one of the 50 to 60 Canadians being monitored by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) because of alleged terrorist activities abroad says she no longer recognizes her own son.

The Quebec woman, who agreed to speak to CBC News on condition she remain anonymous for her own safety, said she wants to warn other parents about the risks awaiting young Muslims like her son.

She said after her son converted to Islam, he was recruited online by a radical Islamist group.

'An easy target'

The woman said her son was by nature a pacifist but was perhaps an easy target.

"They played on his generous nature," she says, adding she watched her son change gradually after he converted.

"He stopped listening to music because it was a sin," she says. "He started to cut off contact with girls, then later, with boys who didn't share his vision."

She said he became more and more critical of Canadian society, saying, "Canadian laws are not good. It's Sharia law that should be applied."

"He is convinced that jihad is a part of the religion," she said, adding he told his parents he wanted them both to "burn in hell" if they did not convert as well. » | CBC News | Monday, March 04, 2013

Hundreds Would Have Died in Attack Plotted by Islamic Fanatics

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: It would have been the most devastating terrorist attack on British soil leaving hundreds dead – and by al-Qaeda inspired but “home-grown” Islamic fanatics.

Up to eight suicide bombers carrying backpacks rammed with explosives and armed with guns were to carry out a horrifying blend of the 7/7 and Mumbai atrocities.

The jihadi gang planned to walk in to crowded, public places shooting indiscriminately before simultaneously detonating their terrible homemade payloads killing hundreds on their wake.

Although no firm target was settled on, the 2012 Olympics may have been one along with soldiers based in this country.

They even boasted about "hitting" David Cameron, his friends and other non – believers in the "land of Satan".

The plot was the most significant since the plans to blow up transatlantic aeroplanes with liquid bombs in 2006 and is likely to have led to the largest loss of life from a terror attack on UK shores. » | Tom Whitehead, Security Editor | Thursday, February 21, 2013

Boko Haram Leaders Are Designated as Terrorists by US

BBC: Three leaders of Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist group have been designated as terrorists by the US state department.

Abubakar Shekau leads the militant group, while Abubakar Adam Kambar and Khalid el Barnawi are thought to have ties with a branch of al-Qaeda.

The move means any assets belonging to the men in the US will be frozen, and contact with US citizens banned.

Boko Haram has said it carried out a number of attacks against churches and other establishments since 2009.

More than 640 people have died in the country so far in 2012 in attacks blamed on the group.

The BBC's Kim Ghattas, in Washington, said the move was likely to have little effect on the three men. » | Thursday, June 21, 2012

Generation of Terrorists Being Groomed in British Jails

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A new generation of “lone killers” is being groomed for terrorism in UK jails, a think-tank has warned.

Major sporting events such as this year’s Olympic Games could be targeted by Muslim ex-prisoners who were radicalised whilst behind bars, according to a study published in the journal of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

It warned that up to around one in 10 of the UK’s 8,000 Muslim inmates were being successfully targeted by extremists inside jail and could form the next generation of terrorists. » | Victoria Ward | Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Douglas Murray: Jihad Against Justice

THE SPECTATOR: The control orders fiasco shows that our political class still isn’t serious about security

For a jihadi, Britain is one of the very best places in the world. In Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen, overhead drones kill terrorists on a regular basis. In most democratic countries, politicians try to limit their enemies’ ability to operate — so one runs the risk of being thrown into prison, if caught mid-jihad. But not in Britain. Here, the Islamist insurgents have found that there are a hundred ways to run rings around our police and justice system. Nothing demonstrates this more spectacularly than the control orders farce.

Control orders are an inelegant system for putting restrictions on terror suspects, either because the evidence which could convict them is too sensitive to be used in a criminal court, or because European human rights laws prevent them from being deported. Eight people are being detained under control orders, with the suspects under curfew, electronic tagging, a travel ban or other restrictions. The system is understandably popular, but it seems certain that David Cameron will allow his Lib Dem colleagues to claim victory by altering the name and tinkering with the terms.

If this happens, it might be seen as a Lib Dem victory. But it will be the clearest possible evidence that the coalition government, like the Labour government before it, remains unwilling to deal with the problem which made control orders necessary in the first place: the fact that this country has been systematically failed by its legal, political and immigration systems. Once, foreign nationals who posed a threat could be deported. The European Convention on Human Rights has put a stop to that. >>> Douglas Murray | Saturday, January 08, 2011

For Christ’s Sake! Guantanamo Seven 'Paid Off' to Halt Legal Action Against Government

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A group of former Guantanamo Bay detainees who claim they were tortured with the complicity of the British security services have been paid millions of pounds to drop legal action against the Government.

Ministers will announce tomorrow that a deal has been reached with the men, at least one of whom is expected to receive more than £1 million of taxpayers’ money.

The former terrorism suspects, some of whom were foreign residents claiming asylum in Britain, were suing the Government for damages over their treatment while in custody. The security services are thought to have pushed for the settlement in order to avoid details of their secret activities being disclosed in court.

Both MI5 and MI6 could have been forced to disclose information that could have threatened national security. Already some information from the defence was starting to slip out, causing anxiety among some senior officials.

The cost of a long running court case - which could have run into tens of millions of pounds - are also likely to have been a factor. Read on and comment >>> Andrew Porter, Political Editor | Monday, November 15, 2010
