Journalist Still In Jail after Disproving Ahmadinejad's Denial of Gay Iranians

Siamak Ghaderi
THE GUARDIAN – IRAN BLOG: Siamak Ghaderi published interviews with gay Iranians, but was imprisoned for insulting the president and spreading propaganda

In September 2007, when the then Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, denied, to the jeers of the audience at Columbia University in New York, that homosexuals existed in the Islamic republic, one journalist back home was determined to prove him wrong.

Siamak Ghaderi, who worked as a reporter with the state news agency, Irna, challenged Ahmadinejad's comments by conducting a series of interviews with Iranian homosexuals and publishing them online. But this came at a price. Read on and comment » | Posted by Saeed Kamali Dehghan | Tuesday, October 08, 2013

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Criticised for Hugging Mother of Hugo Chavez

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been accused of betraying Islam after he was pictured in an emotional embrace with the mother of Hugo Chavez at the late Venezuelan leader's funeral.

The Iranian president's domestic opponents reacted furiously after photos emerged of him giving Elena Frias de Chavez, 78, a consoling hug at last Friday's funeral in Caracas - at which he also kissed Mr Chavez's coffin.

Religious conservatives said the act insulted Iran's religious dignity and amounted to "haram" – a term used to describe a religiously forbidden act under Islamic rules.

Mohammad Taghi Rahbar, the Friday prayer leader of Iran's second city, Isfahan, told Mehr news agency that Mr Ahmadinejad had "lost control".

He added: "Shaking hands with a non-mahram (unrelated by family) woman, under any circumstances, whether young or old, is not allowed. Hugging or expressing emotions is improper for the dignity of the president of a country like the Islamic Republic of Iran." » | Robert Tait, Middle East Correspondent | Sunday, March 10, 2013

Ahmadinejad: Anti-Islam Film an Israeli Ploy

THE JERUSALEM POST: Iranian president slams Israel as military parade displays Shahab 3 missile, which it claims can reach Tel Aviv.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Israel of being behind the anti-Islam film that has sparked violent protests in the Muslim world, AFP reported on Friday.

Speaking at a military parade in Tehran, Ahmadinejad called the film an Israeli plot "to divide (Muslims) and spark sectarian conflict."

The parade, displaying military hardware, marked the anniversary of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war. According to Iranian state media, the military displayed Shahab 3, Sejjil, Qadr, Sahab and Zelzal missiles during the parade.

Iran has claimed the Shahab 3 has a range that can reach Israel and they have reportedly experimented with integrating a nuclear warhead onto the missile.

Ahmadinejad's comments on the anti-Islam film came after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said earlier this week that the American-made video is tied to "Islamophobic policies of arrogant powers and Zionists."

Khamenei added that it is incumbent upon Western governments to prove to the Muslim world that they are against attacks against Islam. "Leaders of [the US and European countries] must prove that they were not accomplices in this big crime in practice by preventing such crazy measures,” he said. » | JPost.com Staff | Friday, September 21, 2012

Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Says Capitalism 'In Decay' as He Meets the Castros in Cuba

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad slammed capitalism as bankrupt and called for a new world order on Wednesday on a visit to Cuba, steering clear of the controversy over his country's nuclear programme.

The Iranian leader arrived in Cuba for talks with his counterpart Raul Castro as the Islamic republic blamed Israel and the United States for the killing of a nuclear scientist in a Tehran car bombing.

The scientist's killing heightened already high tensions with the West over Iran's suspect nuclear programme, but a defiant Ahmadinejad flashed the victory sign several times after landing in Havana.

The Iranian leader was greeted by nine girls in traditional Iranian attire as he stepped off the plane that flew him in from Nicaragua on the third leg of his Latin American tour, aimed at shoring up ties in the region.

Ahmadinejad was taken to the University of Havana where he picked up an honorary doctorate and told students in the Americas' only Communist country that capitalism could soon be on its last legs.

"Our shared task, mission and challenge is to make a great effort for justice to be achieved, (otherwise) millions will suffer injustice," Ahmadinejad said.

"We are watching the capitalist system decay ... it is heading toward a dead end," he said, stressing that what is needed is "a new order, a fresh look, that respects all human beings, a way of thinking that is based on justice." » | Thursday, January 12, 2012

Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez Taunt US over 'Big Atomic Bomb'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez joked about having "a big atomic bomb" and mocked US disapproval during a meeting between the two allies in Caracas.

Despite their geographical distance, the two countries have forged increasingly close ties, a lot of which is down to their shared anti-Americanism, although concrete projects have often lagged behind the rhetoric.

"One of the targets that Yankee imperialism has in its sights is Iran, which is why we are showing our solidarity," Chavez said during a joint press conference. "That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out," he said of a hill next to his Miraflores Palace.

"When we meet, the devils go crazy," he said, mocking US warnings that Latin American nations should not help the Islamic Republic.

Ahmadinejad concurred: "Despite those arrogant people who do not wish us to be together, we will unite forever," he said.

The two men hugged, beamed, held hands and showered each other with praise. "President Chavez is the champion in the war on imperialism," Ahmadinejad said. » | Barney Henderson | Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Accuses Israel and US as Tension over Possible Strike Grows

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused Israel and the United States of seeking world support for a military strike on Iran nuclear facilities, ahead of the publication of a report expected to show the regime is making efforts to develop a warhead.

The Iranian president warned against a military attack on Iran and again insisted Tehran's atomic programme was for peaceful purposes only.

"Iran's capabilities are increasing and it is progressing, and for that reason it has been able to compete in the world. Now Israel and the West, particularly America, fear Iran's capabilities and role," Ahmadinejad told Egypt's Al-Akhbar newspaper.

"Therefore they are trying to gather international support for a military operation to stop (Iran's) role. The arrogant should know that Iran will not allow them to take any action against it," he said.

Ahmadinejad added that Washington wanted to "save the Zionist entity, but it will not be able to do so."

"This entity (Israel) can be compared to a kidney transplanted in a body that rejected it," he said. "Yes it will collapse and its end will be near."

Ahmadinejad's diatribe against Israel, Iran's arch-foe, come after Israeli President Shimon Peres warned in a television interview on Saturday that an attack on Iran was becoming "more and more likely." » | Monday, November 07, 2011

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Ehud Barak refuses to rule out military strike against Iran: Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, refused to rule out military action against Iran yesterday, heightening expectations that his government is preparing to authorise an attack on Tehran's nuclear facilities. ¶ In an interview with the BBC, Mr Barak said that sanctions and international diplomacy had so far failed to deter Iran from seeking to build a nuclear bomb, a prospect that would, he warned, threaten the stability of the "whole world". » | Adrian Blomfield, Jerusalem | Sunday, November 06, 2011

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Threatens to Scrap Directly Elected President

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: The deep internal divides at the top of Iranian politics sharpened on Sunday when the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned he could do away with the presidency, currently held by his rival, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In a speech, Ayatollah Khamenei made passing mention of the presidential system, which was his own route to power. "Presently, the country's ruling political system is a presidential one in which the president is directly elected by the people, making this a good and effective method," he said.

"However, if one day, probably in the distant future, it is deemed that the parliamentary system is more appropriate for the election of officials with executive power, there would be no problem in altering the current structure."

There is little chance of such a change before the next presidential elections are due in 2013. But his comments will be viewed, including by Mr Ahmadinejad himself, as a further warning against overstepping the limits of the authority he is granted under Iran's theocratic rule.

Al-Qaeda Warns Ahmadinejad to Stop Denying 9/11

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Al-Qaeda has joined America in warning Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against spreading September 11 conspiracy theories.

In a curious case of enemies uniting against a common foe, the Yemen-based compiler of the terrorist organisation's Inspire magazine wrote that President Ahmadinejad had appeared "ridiculous" when he questioned the origins of the attack that killed almost 3,000 people.

"The Iranian government has professed on the tongue of its president Ahmadinejad that it does not believe that al Qaeda was behind 9/11 but rather, the US government," it said. "So we may ask the question: why would Iran ascribe to such a ridiculous belief that stands in the face of all logic and evidence?"

David Cameron Attacks Mahmoud Ahmadinejad After UN Walkout

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: David Cameron launched a scathing attack on Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad just minutes after the Iranian leader sparked a mass walkout.

Mr Cameron derided Mr Ahmadinejad from the United Nations podium minutes after the Iranian leader's ferocious attack on Western powers and Israel.

All 27 European delegations left the chamber midway through his speech, a few minutes after the Americans had vacated their seats. The protest was planned in the expectation that Mr Ahmadinejad would prove controversial.

David Cameron, who addressed the assembly shortly after Mr Ahmadinejad, said: "He didn't remind us that he runs a country where they may have elections of a sort but they also repress freedom of speech, do everything they can to avoid the accountability of a free media, violently prevent demonstrations and detain and torture those who argue for a better future."

Mark Kornblau, a spokesman for the US mission to the UN, said: "Mr Ahmadinejad had a chance to address his own people's aspirations for freedom and dignity, but instead he again turned to abhorrent anti-Semitic slurs and despicable conspiracy theories."

The Iranian leader surpassed even his own outspoken standards as he accused the US of using the "mysterious" September 11 attacks as a pretext to launch wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. » | Alex Spillius in New York | Thursday, September 22, 2011
Ahmadinejad Drives UN Delegates Out of Assembly

RUSSIA TODAY: Delegations from the US, UK, France and other nations walked out of the UN General Assembly during a fierce speech by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in which he accused certain countries of attempting to dominate the world.

While delivering his speech, President Ahmadinejad again questioned the 9/11 tragedy, which ten years ago claimed almost 3,000 lives in the US. Dubbing the terror attacks on the Twin Towers and Pentagon “mysterious,” Ahmadinejad reminded delegates that his calls for a proper investigation into the tragedy resulted in his country being threatened with sanctions.

Ahmadinejad also wondered why the main suspected perpetrator, Osama Bin Laden, was never delivered to the US to give evidence.

“Instead of assigning a fact-finding team they killed Osama Bin Laden and threw his body into the sea. Would not it have been more reasonable to bring him to justice?” the Iranian leader told the gathering.

Ahmadinejad attacked the US for causing two world wars and imposing totalitarian regimes on Asian, African and Latin American nations. » | Thursday, September 22, 2011

» | AFP | Dimanche 11 Septembre 2011
