THE NEW YORK TIMES: The S&P 500 fell 3.4 percent, its worst daily showing since mid-June, after the Federal Reserve chair spoke about the path ahead for monetary policy.
Wall Street recoiled on Friday, after the head of the Federal Reserve delivered a stern warning that the central bank’s campaign to lower inflation by raising interest rates is “unconditional” even if it leads to pain for households, businesses and in turn stock prices.
The S&P 500 fell 3.4 percent, its worst daily showing since mid-June, taking its losses for the week to 4 percent. The slump was broad, with every sector of the index lower.
Bond investors also quickly adjusted for more rate increases from the Fed, with the two-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to rising interest rates, moving close to its highest level of the year at 3.44 percent, before easing back to 3.38 percent.
“While higher interest rates, slower growth and softer labor market conditions will bring down inflation, they will also bring some pain to households and businesses,” Jerome Powell, the Fed chair, said during a speech at the Kansas City Fed’s annual conference in Wyoming. “These are the unfortunate costs of reducing inflation. The Justice Department remained largely silent about its investigations of the former president until this month, when the F.B.I. searched his home in Palm Beach, Fla., in a case related to his handling of classified documents. The spectacle of a former president facing criminal investigation raises profound questions about American democracy, and these questions demand answers.
Mr. Trump’s unprecedented assault on the integrity of American democracy requires a criminal investigation. The disturbing details of his postelection misfeasance, meticulously assembled by the Jan. 6 committee, leaves little doubt that Mr. Trump sought to subvert the Constitution and overturn the will of the American people. The president, defeated at the polls in 2020, tried to enlist federal law enforcement authorities, state officials and administrators of the nation’s electoral system in a furious effort to remain in power. When all else failed, he roused an armed mob that stormed the Capitol and threatened lawmakers.
The Justice Department is reportedly examining Mr. Trump’s conduct, including his role in trying to overturn the election and in taking home classified documents. Truss and Sunak Clash on Energy Costs at Penultimate Tory Hustings

Liz Truss has doubled down on her reluctance to “bung more money” at those who will struggle to afford spiralling energy costs this winter while Rishi Sunak said millions may be forced into destitution without extra support, as the pair clashed at the penultimate hustings of the Conservative leadership race.
With energy regulator Ofgem expected to raise the price cap to £3,500 a year from October for the average dual-fuel tariff, Truss warned the issue of spiralling fuel costs was not a short-term one. “If people think this problem is going to be over in six months they are not right. This is a long term problem,” she told the audience in Norfolk.
But Sunak said her planned tax cuts would fail to help pensioners and those on lower incomes, and added that extra support for businesses struggling with energy bills was “clearly something the new prime minister will have to look at”.
The two candidates’ economic plans were the focus of Thursday night’s hustings given the threat of a worsening cost of living crisis.
But Truss appeared more at ease, given she is comfortably the frontrunner in polls of Conservative members, and confidently took shots at Sunak, the BBC and the French president, Emmanuel Macron.
The foreign secretary said she would prefer Boris Johnson to be prime minister over her rival in the leadership race. When asked if Macron was a friend or foe, she said: “The jury’s out. Liz Truss? A better name for that bloody woman would be Mis[s]Trus[t], or Ms Trust! She is clearly a heartless woman. Even Margaret Thatcher was known to have a heart (sometimes).
How and why the Tories want this woman, this turncoat, to lead the Party and the country is beyond my comprehension. She will take the country to the brink of disaster. I dare say that there could even be social unrest in the months to come. We will also have discord with the EU–the last thing we need in this crisis–if she is to be our ‘Führerin’. So a trade war with Europe will likely ensue. In my opinion, Sunak would be a far better choice.
As for her remarks on Emmanuel Macron, they are despicable. (As were her remarks on Nicola Sturgeon.) I, for one, would far prefer Emmanuel Macron to lead my country than this heartless woman. To me, Emmanuel Macron comes over as a thoroughly decent gentleman. By contrast, Ms Trust doesn’t display much decency at all. In that sense, this film, a portrait of a man, is also a chronicle of a time that was.
This one man’s story, his struggles with sexual orientation and various addictions, love and loss, taps into themes that encompass all our lives. His quirky and entertaining reflections come from a unique perspective. We cannot help but see ourselves in, and be inspired by, his distinctive outlook because for all the ways that we may not share his “outside the box” personality, his evolution, his journey through life and his deep desires are ours. They exemplify the conflicts and complexities in every human heart.
Not a Still Life punctuates the stories of Steve’s personal journey through the decades with a judicious use of title graphics to reflect key aspects of gay social history in America. His is the tale of a man who, in the homophobic period of the 50s, was ridiculed and dismissed as a child which led his irreverence, hyperactivity and rebelliousness. Determined to be himself rather than conform to social mores that made him uncomfortable, he came out to everyone in the early 60’s at the age of 17. Au-delà du symbole, il s’agit d’un recul de 13 % depuis le début de l’année. Cela tombe au plus mauvais moment. La majorité du pétrole et du gaz s’échange en dollars. Le recul de l’euro renchérit d’autant les importations d’énergie, dont les prix flambent depuis l’invasion de l’Ukraine par la Russie, le 24 février.
Comme toujours, la reculade de la monnaie unique est largement une histoire de banques centrales. Sewage in Sea: French Appeal to EU over UK Discharges of Waste
BBC: The UK is threatening health and marine life on the French coast by allowing raw sewage to be dumped in the Channel and North Sea, say three Euro MPs.
Pollution warnings have been issued for almost 50 beaches in England and Wales, after heavy rain caused sewage overflow to be diverted into rivers and the sea.
The French MEPs accuse the UK of neglecting environmental commitments and risking marine life and fishing.
British water companies have said they are investing in solving the problem.
Since its departure from the European Union, the United Kingdom had neglected its environmental commitments, the MEPs said in a letter calling for legal or political action from the European Commission.
A UK government spokesperson said their allegation was "simply not true".

Am Roten Platz wirkt auf den ersten Blick alles wie immer. Scharen von Touristen schlendern an diesem heißen Augusttag über das Kopfsteinpflaster zwischen Kremlmauer und Luxuskaufhaus Gum, fotografieren einander vor den bunten Zwiebeldächern der Basiliuskathedrale, essen Eis, sind guter Laune.
Auch das Gum selbst, ein reich verzierter Prachtbau mit filigranem Glasdach von 1893, wirkt unverändert: In den Schaufenstern werben westliche Luxusmarken mit Haute Couture, davor blühen üppige, bestens gepflegte Blumenbeete.
Doch wer genauer hinsieht, bemerkt selbst hier, rund um die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Hauptstadt, die der Stolz des ganzen Landes sind, die Folgen seines Krieges gegen die Ukraine: Weil selbst aus Asien inzwischen kaum noch Touristen kommen, wehen an den Stäben der Reisegruppenleiter nur noch kleine russische Flaggen. Liz Truss would be “robbing Peter to pay Paul” if she diverted £13bn of funding for the NHS to deal with a Covid backlog in social care, experts have said.
The Conservative leadership frontrunner told a hustings on Tuesday night that she would spend the £13bn earmarked for the NHS to catch up on delayed treatment after Covid on social care instead.
She said: “I would spend that money in social care. Quite a lot has gone to the NHS. I would give it to local authorities. We have people in beds in the NHS who would be better off in social care. So put that money into social care.
“We put the extra £13bn in and what people who work in the NHS tell me is the problem is the number of layers in the organisation they have to go through to get things done, the lack of local decision-making. Sanna Marin has insisted she works hard as Finland’s prime minister but should also be entitled to a private life, after a photograph taken at her residence of two topless women kissing sparked renewed criticism of her partying.
“I am human,” Marin told reporters on Wednesday at the conference of her Social Democratic party, describing the past week as “quite difficult”. On the verge of tears, she said she too sometimes longs “for joy, light and fun amidst the dark clouds”.
The 36-year-old, the world’s youngest head of government when she was elected in 2019, added: “I haven’t missed a single day of work. I want to believe people will look at what we do at work rather than what we do in our spare time.”
She said she had not left “a single task undone – and I won’t leave this one in the middle either. I’m learning. But I am doing my job as well as I have been up to now. I’m thinking about Ukraine, I’m thinking about you, and I’m doing my job.”

Ingredients and step-by-step instructions:
Start by searing the chicken in vegetable oil.
Then add the following ingredients:
150g onion
Salt to taste
1 tbsp each of cumin, paprika, and coriander
1 tsp each of black pepper, chili pepper, and turmeric
Bay leaves
Method:
Pour enough hot water over the chicken to cover it. Cover the pot and let it cook over high heat for 30 minutes.
Fry three eggplant (500g) in hot vegetable oil.
Fry the potatoes (500g) in the same cooking oil.
Place tomato slices on the bottom of a deep oven-safe pan.
Remove the chicken from the heat and add it to the pan.
Stack the eggplant, bell peppers, and potatoes, and place them around the chicken.
Mix the following ingredients in a bowl with three cups of the chicken broth: 50g tomato paste; 1 tsp each of salt, cumin, paprika, coriander, and half a tsp of black pepper.
Place in a pre-heated oven at a temperature of 400°F, 200°C.
Bake the chicken with the vegetables for 30 minutes.

What a Bloody Mess This Country Is In!
MARK ALEXANDER: I have lived a few years already and I must say that I have never lived through times like this before. Absolutely everything is going pear-shaped! Food prices are going through the roof. Prices for energy are scandalous, and for many, are becoming unpayable. People at the top are rewarding themselves with multimillion pound salaries and bonuses for doing FA. Ordinary folk are expected to suffer in order to pay for these excesses of the people at the top. Wages are stagnant. Savings, because of double-digit inflation, are being eroded very rapidly. The prime minister is largely absent. The last I heard, he was away in Greece having a ball whilst ordinary folk are having to suffer.
Brexit was always a very, very stupid idea. Now, the stupidity of the move is being shown to all, being shown to be as stupid as all sensible people knew it would be from the start. There are many things impoverishing us Brits now, but Brexit is one of the main things causing that impoverishment.
When I was growing up, we could always depend on the Conservatives to run our economy in a sensible way. We could always depend on the Conservatives to lead the nation to relative prosperity. That was once. Once upon a time. Alas, no longer. Now, the Conservatives are the architects of our demise. They are the ones enabling the rich to get even richer, and the poor to be impoverished beyond their wildest nightmares. The wages/salaries of the working classes and even of the bulk of the middle classes have been stagnant for years now. Yet the Conservatives, or Tories, have been in power for about twelve years already; therefore, it is the Tories who are the architects of this fiasco. We can blame no-one else other than the Tories.
This country’s politics was historically dominated by two parties: the Whigs and the Tories. The Whigs went the way of the dinosaur: into extinction. It is high time that the Tories did exactly the same. This country can do better than the Tories. What this country needs is a business-friendly party which is both pro-Europe/pro-EU and progressive. The Tories are neither pro-EU nor progressive. On the contrary, the party has ossified. Indeed, it is made up of fossils from a bygone age. Let the party go the way of the dodo. This party is unable to bring prosperity to this nation. Under this backward party, the country can look forward to only one thing: sliding into oblivion.
Trump is not one of my favourite politicians. But he did get one thing right: he spoke of “sh*thouse countries”. Unfortunately, he got the nomenclature right, but he forgot to include the UK in the list! This country is truly becoming one of those nations.

Our Yemeni Kitchen | مطبخنا اليمني | Kofta Kebab Cooked à la turque
Ingredients and step-by-step instructions for making the recipe::
Preparing the kebab:
In a mixing bowl add the following ingredients:
400g minced lamb or beef
One tsp of garlic
40g of finely chopped onion
Salt and one tsp each of paprika and hot pepper
Mix everything. Use wooden kebab sticks.
Wet your hands and shape the kebab into the desired shape Refrigerate the kebabs so that they become firmer and don't break when grilled.
How to prepare the eggplant / aubergine:
Make holes in/Pierce the eggplants (aubergines and place on a baking tray
Put them in a preheated oven – oven temperature: 400°F, 200°C
Roast the eggplant for 12 minutes
Remove the eggplant skin
Add one tsp of grated garlic chopped finely
In a small pan, add a little olive oil.
Add the eggplant mixture and cook it over medium heat.
Add a half a tsp of salt. Keep stirring the eggplant until all the liquid evaporates.
Mix the eggplant with three fourths [three quarters] of a cup of yogurt.
Pour into a serving tray Add one fourth [a quarter] of a cup of yogurt on top.
Once the eggplant is done, start grilling the kofta kebab.
Over high heat, cook the kebab on all sides.
Place the kebab on top of the yogurt and eggplant mixture on the serving tray.
In a separate pan, heat up on low heat three tbsp of butter.
Add a half a tbsp of red pepper and mix it with the butter.
Pour the butter over the kebab and eggplant.
Garnish with parsley and serve with bread. Delicious!

Inflation in the UK will hit 18% early next year as consumers count the cost of the deepening energy crisis, one of the world’s biggest banks has predicted.
Forecasters at the US financial services group Citi said it expects the consumer prices index to breach 18% in the first quarter of 2023, while the retail prices index inflation rate will soar to 21%.
The prediction outstrips previous modelling of the impact of rising costs. Earlier this month the Bank of England said it expected inflation to reach 13% by the end of the year as it raised interest rates for a sixth successive time.
Separately, the Resolution Foundation thinktank has forecast inflation could reach as high as 15% by early 2023.

In den 80er Jahren, als Aids sich in Frankreich rapide ausbreitete, organisierte sich eine Handvoll Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten und gründete Act Up-Paris. Nach dem Vorbild des „großen Bruders“ – des 1987 gegründeten US-amerikanischen Interessenverbandes Act Up – trat die Vereinigung für die Verteidigung der Rechte aller HIV-Positiven oder an Aids erkrankten Menschen ein. Die Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten kämpften hartnäckig und mit vollem Engagement: Sie verbreiteten sachliche Informationen über die Krankheit, die alle Menschen – unabhängig von sexueller Orientierung – ereilen kann. Außerdem rangen sie um die Behandlung der Kranken und setzten sich unter hohem Zeitdruck für die Aids-Prävention ein.
Die kleine Act Up-Armee schreckte vor nichts zurück und setzte auch auf zivilen Ungehorsam: So warf sie beispielsweise als Protest gegen die Zensur mit Kunstblut gefüllte Wasserbomben. Zielscheiben ihrer Kritik waren die Kirche, die den Gebrauch von Kondomen ablehnte, Politiker, die eine echte Aufklärungskampagne verzögerten, und Forschungslabore, die offenbar nur an ihren Profit dachten. Act Up-Paris provozierte mit plakativen Slogans und legendär gewordenen PR-Aktionen, etwa dem Entrollen eines pinkfarbenen Riesenkondoms über dem Obelisken der Place de la Concorde.

Aug 22, 2022 Police in Pakistan have charged the country's former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, under anti-terror laws.
Officials accused Mr Khan of breaching the country's anti-terrorism act for allegedly making threats against the state officials.
He has been a vocal critic of the government and the country's army since he was ousted from power in April in a no-confidence vote.
Police announced the charges after the cricketer-turned-politician accused authorities of torturing his close aide, who is himself being detained under sedition charges.

Aug 21, 2022 Darya Dugina, the daughter of Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin, has been killed in a suspected car bombing in Moscow.
Her father is a close ally of Russia's President Vladimir Putin, and is believed to have been the intended target of the attack.
Mr Dugin is a prominent ultra-nationalist ideologue who is believed to be close to the Russian president, with the nickname "Putin's brain".

Liz Truss will plunge the economy into an “inflation spiral” if she does not choose between her unfunded £50bn tax cuts and providing cost of living support, her Conservative party leadership opponent, Rishi Sunak, has claimed.
Sunak’s leadership campaign said Truss would increase borrowing to “historic and dangerous levels” and place public finances into “serious jeopardy” if she attempted to do both.
The comments came after Truss, the frontrunner to be the next prime minister, signalled another U-turn with direct support for companies and households with soaring energy bills this winter.
In a statement, Sunak’s campaign said: “Following weeks of rejecting direct support payments as ‘handouts’, Truss supporters have slowly woken up to the reality of what winter brings. Aug 22, 2022 Singapore will repeal a law that bans gay sex, effectively making it legal to be homosexual in the city-state.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on national TV they would abolish the 377A law - which bans sex between men.
LGBT activists in Singapore have hailed the move as "a win for humanity".
But they also expressed concern after Mr Lee said the government would ensure better legal protection for the definition of marriage as one between a man and a woman.
This would effectively make it harder for gay marriage to be legalised.

Singapore to Repeal Law That Criminalises Sex between Men

Singapore will repeal a colonial-era law that criminalises sex between men, a landmark decision described by LGBTQ+ groups as “a win for humanity”.
In a national address on Sunday, the prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, said that scrapping section 377A of the penal code would bring the law into line with current social attitudes and “provide some relief to gay Singaporeans”.
However, Lee added that the government did not want “wholesale changes in our society”, including changes to the legal definition of marriage.
“Even as we repeal 377A, we will uphold and safeguard the institution of marriage. Under the law, only marriages between one man and one woman are recognised in Singapore,” he said.
Section 377A, which was introduced under British colonial rule, criminalises “any act of gross indecency with another male person”.
