‘Saint-Tropez Has Become LVMH Ville’: Locals Slam Super-rich ‘Takeover’

THE GUARDIAN: The annual influx of billionaires is leading to ‘odious’ practices in the French Riviera town

It’s probably the world’s only fishing village where it’s easier to buy a €25,000 “mini” Celine handbag, a €4,000 Christian Dior trench or a €2,000 Rimowa suitcase than it is to pick up a rod and tackle.

Ever since Brigitte Bardot started cavorting on its beaches in the 1950s, Saint-Tropez has been better known as a place to catch a glimpse of a celebrity than a fresh sea bass. But now longsuffering locals are warning that the annual influx of the global super-rich is becoming too much – even for them.

“Independent restaurants, hotels and cafes are all being bought by luxury groups,” says Vérane Guérin, a municipal councillor. “It’s becoming not Saint-Tropez, but LVMH Ville.”

LVMH, the luxury goods company founded and run by Europe’s richest person, Bernard Arnault, owns the town’s Celine, Dior and Rimowa stores as well outlets for several of its other brands, including Fendi and Loewe. The conglomerate, whose official name is LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, also owns two of the town’s fanciest hotels: the Cheval Blanc and the White 1921.

Jahrhundert angebaut. David Biscarrat kultiviert auf 150 Hektar Freiland-Melonen. Seine Frau Laetitia zaubert aus ihnen herzhafte Gerichte wie Tatar mit Zucchini und Avocado oder serviert sie gekocht.

Im Süden Frankreichs ist sie weder von den Märkten noch aus der sommerlichen Küche wegzudenken: die Melone. Im 15. Jahrhundert brachten die Päpste von Avignon Melonen-Samen aus Italien als Gastgeschenk in die Provence, wo sie seitdem in der Region von Cavaillon angebaut werden. Dank mehr als 3000 Sonnenstunden im Jahr finden sie ideale Bedingungen zum Reifen und entwickeln ihren besonders süßen, fruchtigen Geschmack.

David Biscarrat baut die Pflanzen auf 150 Hektar in Freilandkultur an, wo sie auch extremen Wetterbedingungen trotzen müssen. Davids Frau Laetitia findet immer neue Varianten, die Melonen in der Küche zu verarbeiten. Sie zaubert aus ihnen herzhafte Gerichte wie ein Tatar mit Zucchini und Avocado oder serviert sie gekocht als Melonenkompott mit angebratenen Krustentieren.

Jun 19, 2022 • Die Provenzalischen Voralpen sind eine Region in Südfrankreich unweit der Mittelmeerküste. Dort lebt der Landwirt und gebürtige Togolese Pierre Koffi Alanda. Der Gemüsebauer erntet im Frühherbst Kürbis- und Zucchiniblüten sowie Mangold, der ursprünglich aus Togo stammt, aus Alandas Heimat.

Zwischen der französischen Riviera und den hohen Bergen von Mercantour liegen die Provenzalischen Voralpen. Das Dorf La Sagne hat nur wenige Einwohner, viele sind an die Küste gezogen. Manche kehren zurück, andere finden in dem kleinen Dorf auf 1.200 Meter Höhe ihre neue Heimat. Pierre Koffi Alanda kam zum ersten Mal vor etwa 20 Jahren dorthin. Er stammt aus Togo. Damals machte er ein Praktikum beim Vater seiner heutigen Nachbarin Joana Fabre. Heute betreibt er in La Sagne Gemüseanbau nach ökologischen Kriterien. Im Herbst wachsen in seinem Garten Kürbisse, alte Gemüsesorten und Gemüse, das ursprünglich aus Togo stammt. Joana Fabre ist vor ein paar Jahren mit ihrem italienischen Freund in das Dorf ihrer Kindheit zurückgekehrt. Ihre Kinder sollen auf dem Land aufwachsen. Die Familie hält Ziegen und Schafe und lebt von der Käseherstellung. Aus dem Gemüse von Pierre Koffi Alanda entstehen köstliche Gerichte der Region und seiner afrikanischen Heimat. Mit seinem Nachbarn Georges Fabre kocht er ein traditionelles Gericht: Kürbisravioli mit einer Walnusssoße. Kürzlich ist auch Pierre Koffis Partnerin, die deutsche Künstlerin Cosima Jentzsch, nach La Sagne gezogen. Gemeinsam bereiten sie einen Gboma Gnagna zu, ein togolesisches Rezept. Dort hinein gehört Gboma, afrikanischer Mangold, dessen Samen Pierre Koffi Alanda ursprünglich eigens aus Togo mitgebracht hat. Joana Fabre verwendet ihren Ziegen- und Schafskäse, um gefüllte Zucchiniblüten vorzubereiten. Dazu gibt es süßen Mangoldkuchen mit Parmesan und Rosinen.

Topless Kate Photos: Irish Tabloid Newspaper Publishes Pictures

THE GUARDIAN: Irish Daily Star prints topless photos with Italian gossip mag owned by Silvio Berlusconi planning to follow suit with 26-page photo special

The Irish edition of the Daily Star has published topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge despite it being part of a British-owned media group which has promised to respect the privacy of the Royal Family.

Its editor, Mike O'Kane, said the pictures did not feature in the Northern Ireland or British editions.

The Daily Star is partly owned by Richard Desmond's Northern and Shell Group, which also owns Channel 5.

Responding to reports that the Irish Daily Star has published topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge, St James's Palace said: "There can be no motivation for this action other than greed."

Italian Magazine to Publish Topless Pictures of Duchess of Cambridge

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: An Italian magazine is set to follow a French publication in printing photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless in a special issue next week.

Gossip magazine Chi is understood to be planning a 26-page photo special of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on holiday in the south of France.

Despite St James's Palace describing the publication of the photos of Kate in French magazine Closer yesterday as a "grotesque and totally unjustifiable" invasion of privacy, and the announcement that the royal couple will sue its publishers, unconfirmed reports said Chi still planned to print the images[,].

Closer and Chi are both part of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Mondadori media group.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last night took the unprecedented step of starting legal proceedings over topless pictures which they regard as a “grotesque” invasion of privacy.

Topless Photographs of Kate Middleton to Be Published by French Magazine

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A French magazine which is expected to publish topless pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge has been accused by St James’s Palace of “turning the clock back 15 years” to the last days of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Long-lens shots of the Duchess, taken while she and the Duke of Cambridge were beside a private swimming pool during a holiday in Provence last week, are due to appear in Closer magazine today.

The Duke and Duchess were told about the pictures during breakfast as they prepared for the fourth day of their tour of the Far East, and were said to be “saddened” that their privacy had been breached.

Palace officials are expected to contact lawyers in France this morning and will consider all options available to them once they have had a chance to verify that the pictures are genuine.

The Duke’s mother was killed in August 1997 when her car crashed in Paris as it was being pursued by paparazzi photographers, and the fact that Palace sources alluded to the Princess’s death showed the depth of their anger at the controversy, which threatens to overshadow the couple’s foreign tour.

A Royal source said: “This is disappointing, saddening and turns the clock back 15 years.
