One of Rupert Murdoch's Australian newspapers has published a picture showing the Duchess of Cambridge's bare bottom, refusing to follow a "ridiculous" ban imposed by the British media.

The image was taken during the royal couple's tour of Australia in April when they showed off their infant son George, and was run in the Sydney Daily Telegraph a day after it appeared in German tabloid Bild, which declared she had a "beautiful bum".

It shows the Duchess of Cambridge's blue and white summer dress lifted by a gust of wind when the royal couple got out of a helicopter in the Blue Mountains, 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Sydney.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph said British newspapers had refused to run the photo out of respect to the royals, but in a comment piece said this was "an antiquated code of etiquette" under the headline "My bare lady: Derri-heir to the throne is fair game."

"It seems a bit ridiculous to expect the rest of the world's media to follow suit, particularly in a world in which flesh and commercialism go hand in hand," said Telegraph social writer Annette Sharp.

An Italian magazine has infuriated the royal family after publishing paparazzi pictures of a pregnant Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing in a bikini on a private holiday in the Caribbean.

The publication of the first royal "baby bump" photos comes months after the same gossip magazine, Chi, published topless pictures of the Duchess on a private holiday in France.

A royal spokeswoman said the publication was "a clear breach of the couple's right to privacy".

"We are disappointed that photographs of the duke and duchess on a private holiday look likely to be published overseas. This is a clear breach of the couple's right to privacy," added the spokeswoman for St James's Palace.

The pictures were taken on the Caribbean island of Mustique where the duchess and her husband, Prince William, are on holiday. They are said to show the duchess, formerly Kate Middleton, walking in the surf alongside the prince.

And the photographer was spying on their French chateau [sic] on the orders of France's Closer magazine - the first to publish 13 intimate images of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last week - he said.

Mr Rostain, in his 40s, is a close friend of former French First Lady Carla Bruni and one of France's most notorious long lens photographers.

Police Raid Headquarters of French Magazine in Hunt for Photographer of Topless Duchess Pictures

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Police today raided the headquarters of French magazine Closer as they hunted down the photographer responsible for capturing the Duchess of Cambridge topless.

Officers arrived at the Closer building in Paris at 10am, with detectives confirming they were looking for information ‘which might lead to the identity’ of the paparazzi responsible.

The investigation was launched by prosecutors in the French capital on Monday, with William and Kate later winning an injunction preventing further distribution of the images.

But Christophe Bigot , a barrister who specialises in media law, immediately questioned the legality of the raid – suggesting that it had solely been authoritised because members of the Royal Family were involved.

Journalistic sources – who include photographers – are strictly protected by French law which was tightened up as recently as two years ago.

"A law of January 2, 2010 protects the confidentiality of sources, as do numerous decisions of the European Court of Human Rights," said Mr Bigot, in an interview with Le Figaro. "In the case of William and Kate, I do not see how a prosecutor could justify a search of Closer."

On Tuesday, judges ordered Closer to hand over all files containing the images to representatives of the couple within 24 hours, but there was no order to name the photographer.

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge prepared to launch criminal proceedings in France, the gossip magazine Chi hit the streets of Italy on Monday with a special edition featuring the controversial topless pictures of the Duchess.

The magazine devoted 20 pages to pictures of the Duchess on vacation with her husband Prince William in the south of France and features three topless photos of her on the cover with the headline: "Kate Middleton Court Scandal – The queen is nude!”[.]

The photos include the Duchess sunbathing topless on the balcony and rubbing suntan lotion on her husband’s back. There is also a shot of her back with her hands putting suntan lotion inside her bikini bottom.

Inside the magazine is a column by cosmetic surgeon Paolo Santanche analysing the duchess, as well as two pages headlined ‘2012 the Year of Scandals’, which includes the recent naked photo of Prince Harry partying in Las Vegas.
