Die Türkei hat am Mittwoch ihre Drohungen wahr gemacht und die Aufnahme von Beitrittsverhandlungen mit Finnland und Schweden im NATO-Rat blockiert. Wie Diplomaten weiter berichteten, sprachen sich die anderen 29 Mitgliedstaaten für diesen Schritt aus, der aber nur einstimmig möglich ist. May 18, 2022 • Agnes Jeschke ist 101 Jahre alt. Amir Farahani 28, geflüchtet aus dem Iran. Wäre der junge Mann nicht bei ihr eingezogen, hätte Agnes ins Pflegeheim gemusst. Stattdessen hat sie mit über 100 Jahren nicht nur einen Mitbewohner, sondern auch einen besten Freund gefunden. "Wir verstehen uns", sagt sie mit ihrem Berliner Charme "wie zwei linke Latschen".

Eigentlich suchte Amir Farahani nur eine Wohnung, als er auf eine Anzeige im Internet stieß: „Mietfrei wohnen gegen Gesellschaft für unsere Omi.“ Der junge Mann aus dem Iran macht derzeit eine Ausbildung zur Pflegefachkraft in Berlin. Er möchte nichts verändern, damit die 101-jährige Agnes sich weiter in ihrer Wohnung zurechtfindet. Amir kümmert sich um sie, wenn er zuhause ist, schmiert Brote, hilft beim Anziehen und Zähneputzen. Warum macht er das alles?

Er behandele Agnes so, wie er selbst behandelt werden möchte. Dass alte Menschen ins Pflegeheim abgeschoben werden, findet er unmöglich. Seit er eingezogen ist, sei Agnes wieder aufgeblüht, sagen auch ihre Freundinnen Und Freunde und Verwandten. Kein Wunder. Gemeinsam gehen die beiden schaukeln, schwimmen oder in den Zoo. Und haben dabei jede Menge Spaß. Denn egal, ob 101 oder 28, Teheran oder Berlin, ihr Humor ist genau derselbe. „Wir verstehen uns ohne Brille“, sagt Agnes dazu.

Finland to Formally Join Nato Despite Russian Warning - BBC News

May 15, 2022 • Finland has confirmed that it will apply for Nato membership, abandoning the neutral status the country has held since the end of World War Two.

The move comes despite warnings from Russian president Vladimir Putin, who told his Finnish counterpart that joining Nato would be a "mistake".

President Sauli Niinisto called it a "historic day". He says the shift in policy is in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Nato foreign ministers say they want a rapid accession process for Finland.

Sweden could also announce its intention to join as soon as Monday.

Finland shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia. Until now, it has stayed out of Nato to avoid antagonising its eastern neighbour.

ADVOCATE: Longtime activist Urvashi Vaid, a leader of many LGBTQ+ and other social justice organizations, has died at age 63. Vaid died Saturday at her home in New York City, according to the National LGBTQ Task Force. Vaid was executive director of the group, then known as the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, from 1989 to 1992. Before that she was its media director.

“We are devastated at the loss of one of the most influential progressive activists of our time,” Kierra Johnson, current executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, said in a press release. “Urvashi Vaid was a leader, a warrior, and a force to be reckoned with. She was also a beloved colleague, friend, partner, and someone we all looked up to — a brilliant, outspoken, and deeply committed activist who wanted full justice and equality for all people.”

Peter Tatchell has refused an invitation to be declared a “national treasure” at the Queen’s platinum jubilee because of the monarch’s “neglectful stance towards the LGBT+ community”.

Tatchell, who has been campaigning for gay rights and equality since 1967, had been invited to attend the pageant outside Buckingham Palace as one of more than 100 “national treasures”.

But he declined, stating his lifelong republicanism and also that: “To my knowledge, [the Queen] has never publicly acknowledged that LGBT+ people exist. The words lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender have never publicly passed her lips and she has never visited or been a patron of any LGBT+ charity.”

He added: “To be ignored for 70 years feels like a deliberate snub.”

In a letter to the platinum jubilee co-chair, former publishing titan Nicholas Coleridge, Tatchell also claims that for many years palace staff were prohibited from bringing same-sex partners to the Christmas ball.

Warnings that a new statue of Margaret Thatcher would attract egg-throwing protests came true within two hours of it being installed in her home town of Grantham on Sunday.

The bronze statue was, without ceremony, placed on a 3-metre (10ft) high plinth to make it more difficult for protesters to inflict any damage.

Shortly afterwards a man was seen throwing eggs from behind a temporary fence and, when one connected, a cry of “oi” could be heard.

The egg throwing came as a surprise to nobody in Grantham. There is pride but also heightened awareness of how divisive a figure Thatcher remains.

May 14, 2022 • Russia has said Finland and Sweden's entry into Nato would lead to a militarisation of the Baltic region.

Finland and Sweden are both expected to make a formal request to join the Western alliance, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö that joining Nato and abandoning Finland's neutral status would be a "mistake."

Putin also said there was no threat to Finland's security, with which Russia shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border.

The Russian foreign ministry has indicated there will be retaliation, and the country's decision to suspend electricity supplies to Finland is being seen as an early sign of this.

May 14, 2022 • Brexit is not really working and it is likely to get so much worse. There are so many negative consequences to Brexit with no apparent advantages. Falling exports, a weakening pound, hold-ups at Dover, shortages of key workers and so many other problems.

Other negatives include the collapse of the London tourist business now that those from the EU require passports, the problems for Brits travelling to the EU including queues at the airports, roaming charges, green card motor insurance and health insurance.

But the most serious problems concern trade. It has become so difficult and almost impossible for small- and medium-sized businesses to sell to the EU. Internet purchases and sales are subject to such high surcharges that it is killing trade.

Brexit has put the UK behind such massive bureaucratic barriers that it is bound to seriously and irreversibly damage the UK economy. Furthermore many of the problems created by Brexit will add significantly to already rapidly increasing prices.

Khalifa, the president of the UAE, oversaw much of the country’s blistering economic growth and his name was immortalised on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, after bailing out debt-crippled Dubai during its financial crisis more than a decade ago.

The UAE’s ministry of presidential affairs announced a 40-day period of mourning and a three-day suspension of work in all ministries and the private sector beginning on Friday, including flags to be flown at half-staff.

A cryptocurrency that promoted itself as a stable means of exchange collapsed. And more than $ 300 billion was wiped out by a crash in cryptocurrency prices since Monday.

The crypto world went into a full meltdown this week in a sell-off that graphically illustrated the risks of the experimental and unregulated digital currencies. Even as celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and tech moguls like Elon Musk have talked up crypto, the accelerating declines of virtual currencies like Bitcoin and Ether show that, in some cases, two years of financial gains can disappear overnight.

The moment of panic amounted to the worst reset in cryptocurrencies since Bitcoin plummeted 80 percent in 2018. But this time, the falling prices have broader impact because more people and institutions hold the currencies. LONDON — One of the biggest donors to Britain’s Conservative Party is suspected of secretly funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to the party from a Russian account, according to a bank alert filed to Britain’s national law enforcement agency.

The donation, of $630,225, was made in February 2018 in the name of Ehud Sheleg, a wealthy London art dealer who was most recently the Conservative Party’s treasurer. The money was part of a fund-raising blitz that helped propel Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his party to a landslide victory in the 2019 general election.

But documents filed with the authorities last year and reviewed by The New York Times say that the money originated in a Russian account of Mr. Sheleg’s father-in-law, Sergei Kopytov, who was once a senior politician in the previous pro-Kremlin government of Ukraine. Trotz internationalen Protesten hat ein iranisches Gericht das Todesurteil gegen den schwedisch-iranischen Arzt Ahmed Reza Jalali bestätigt. «Das Urteil ist rechtskräftig. Es wird vollstreckt», sagte der Justizsprecher Zabihollah Khodaian Anfang der Woche. Gleichzeitig verkündete der Geheimdienst, er habe zwei europäische Staatsbürger festgenommen, die «Chaos, Instabilität und soziale Unordnung» hätten schüren wollen. Das französische Aussenministerium teilte am Donnerstag mit, es handele sich um Franzosen, und forderte ihre sofortige Freilassung.

Finland must apply to join Nato without delay in the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, its president and prime minister have said, confirming a historic change in the Nordic country’s security policy after decades of military non-alignment.

Sauli Niinistö and Sanna Marin made the call in a joint statement, adding: “We hope that the national steps still needed to make this decision will be taken rapidly within the next few days.”

Nato membership would strengthen Finland’s security, the two leaders said, and as a member of Nato: “Finland would strengthen the entire defence alliance. Finland must apply for Nato membership as a matter of urgency.”

SEOUL — North Korea on Thursday reported its first outbreak of the coronavirus, declaring a “maximum emergency” and ordering all cities and counties in the nation of 25 million to lock down to fight the spread.

It was an abrupt change for a secretive country that had long insisted it had no cases of the virus that first emerged in neighboring China more than two years ago. Outside experts had been skeptical, however, citing a lack of extensive Covid testing and the North’s threadbare public health system.

The danger posed by an outbreak is greater in North Korea than in most other nations because most of its people remain unvaccinated.
