Pete Buttigieg Says Voters Are Ready for a Gay Vice President
LGBTQ NATION: His time in politics has shown him it's "extraordinary" how people can look past their biases.

Out Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg believes that, if presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris chooses him as her vice presidential running mate, voters wouldn’t mind the fact that he’s gay. In fact, a recent poll suggests this as well, with voters preferring him and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) from a list of Harris’s possible running mates.
“I’m not saying [homphobia] not a thing, but I’m saying it’s been extraordinary how people look past that,” Buttigieg — the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana — recently told the celebrity gossip website TMZ.com. “When I came out, I was in the middle of reelection in my hometown in Mike Pence’s Indiana, and I wound up getting a higher proportion of the vote than the first time, because the city I was mayor of thought I did a good job.” » | Daniel Villarreal | Friday, July 26, 2024

Pete Buttigieg Is Not Gay, According to Disgraced Former Fox News Host
LGBTQ NATION: Tucker Carlson, a longtime homophobe, cited bizarre "proof" of Buttigieg's heterosexuality.
Out gay Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg isn’t really gay, according to anti-LGBTQ+ former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who is also expected to speak at this week’s Republican National Convention.
In a recent episode of Carlson’s show — hosted on X, the social media platform owned by transphobic right-wing billionaire Elon Musk — Carlson called Buttigieg “supposedly gay” and said that one of his show’s gay producers told him that Buttigieg “is not gay.” “Gays all keep close track of that stuff,” Carlson said, offering no real proof of his absurd claim. » | Daniel Villarreal | Monday, July 15, 2024

Pete Buttigieg Hits Back at Fox News Host’s Criticism of His Paternity Leave
THE GUARDIAN: The US transportation secretary and his husband recently adopted newborn twins and praised ‘an administration that’s actually pro-family’

US transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, who has been on paternity leave since mid-August with newborn twins, called right-wing attacks on his paternity leave “strange” and from “a side of the aisle that used to claim the mantle of being pro-family”.
Buttigieg – who is gay – was the subject of criticism from Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday, who belittled the secretary’s paternity leave while making homophobic comments and criticizing the administration for supply chain woes.
“In his case, I guess he just doesn’t understand the concept of bottle feeding let alone the concept of paternity lave,” Buttigieg said about Carlson on MSNBC. “What we have right now is an administration that’s actually pro-family,” said Buttigieg, who adopted newborn twins with his husband Chasten.
“I’m blessed to experience that as an employee, being able to have the flexibility to take care of our newborn children, which is by the way, work, it’s joyful work, it’s wonderful work, but it’s definitely work,” Buttigieg added. » | Jessica Glenza | Saturday, October 16, 2021

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg Announce Birth of 2 Children, Share Photo
ADVOCATE: The news makes Buttigieg the first out gay parent in the U.S. Cabinet.
After announcing earlier this summer that they were expecting, Pete and Chasten Buttigieg have now revealed the birth of their two children. It is assumed that the children are twins.
"Chasten and I are beyond thankful for all the kind wishes since first sharing the news that we're becoming parents," Pete Buttigieg, the 39-year-old United States Secretary of Transportation, wrote in a post. "We are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family." Chasten, 32, shared an almost identical message.
Joseph is also the name of Pete's father. » | Mikelle Street | Saturday, September 4, 2021

US Election 2020: Buttigieg Sexuality Becomes Campaign Issue
Firebrand conservative Rush Limbaugh said Democrats must realise America is still not ready to elect a gay man.
Mr Buttigieg's Democratic rivals leapt to his defence, and President Donald Trump said he would vote for a gay man.
Mr Limbaugh was last week awarded a top civilian honour by the president.
On his radio show which is nationally syndicated to millions of listeners, Mr Limbaugh on Wednesday imagined Demcorats' deliberations over who to vote for.
He said: "They're saying, 'OK, how's this going to look? Thirty-seven-year-old gay guy kissing his husband on stage, next to Mr Man, Donald Trump.'" » | Valentine’s Day, 2020

Why a Young Former Mayor Is Surging in US Election
There's an old saying about the way the two parties pick their presidential nominees - Democrats fall in love; Republicans fall in line.
After a 2016 election that turned conventional wisdom on its head by producing iconoclastic Donald Trump and establishment-favourite Hillary Clinton as the nominees, that nostrum could be reasserting itself. While the Republican Party is closing ranks behind the president, there's nothing logical or expected about the early success Pete Buttigieg is having in the Democratic fight to take on Trump in November.
He's the former mayor of a modest-sized Indiana city, the 306th-largest in the US - a college town like Oxford in the UK, only smaller.
He's 38 years old, which would make him the youngest president in US history.
He's also the first openly gay major-party presidential candidate, a historic candidacy that would have seemed inconceivable just a few decades ago, when Republicans were campaigning - and winning - on opposition to gay marriage and mainstream Democrats, by and large, avoided the issue. » | Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter | Sunday, February 9, 2020
