Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has named businessman Aziz Akhannouch to lead a new government after his liberal RNI party thrashed the long-ruling Islamists in parliamentary elections.

The king appointed Akhannouch “head of the government and tasked him with forming a new government”,following Wednesday’s polls, a statement from the palace said on Friday.

The RNI won 102 of parliament’s 395 seats, trouncing the moderate PJD Islamists, which had headed the governing coalition for a decade but took just 13 seats, according to results released by the interior ministry.

Akhannouch hailed the results as “a victory for democracy”.

Prince Andrew has been served with an affidavit for a lawsuit say lawyers for Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who alleges she was forced to have sex with the royal when she was 17 years old.

A document filed in a US court on Friday showed that paperwork for Giuffre’s lawsuit was filed at Andrew’s home, Royal Lodge, in Windsor on 27 August. The affidavit was accepted by a Metropolitan police officer at the gates of the property at 9.30am, after the agent filing the document had been turned away the previous day, according to the documents.

Court documents show that a response is now due from Andrew by 17 September.

The Queen has sent a message to the US president, Joe Biden, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and remembered her visit to Ground Zero, the site of the attack on the World Trade Center.

Her message said: “As we mark the 20th anniversary of the terrible attacks on September 11 2001, my thoughts and prayers – and those of my family and the entire nation – remain with the victims, survivors and families affected, as well as the first responders and rescue workers called to duty.

“My visit to the site of the World Trade Center in 2010 is held fast in my memory. May 29, 2013 • Après plusieurs mois de manifestations et de débats houleux, Bruno Boileau et Vincent Autin se sont enfin dit "oui".

Premier couple gay à bénéficier du mariage pour tous, une loi promulguée il y a onze jours, les deux hommes se sont unis à la mairie de Montpellier. Une cérémonie sous le feu des projecteurs, couverte par quelques deux cents journalistes. Parmi les quatre cents invités, plusieurs élus mais aussi la porte-parole du gouvernement Najat Vallaud-Belkacem (à titre privé, c'est une amie du couple), ainsi que des associations de défence des droits des homosexuels.

A l'extérieur, l'évènement a attiré les curieux, partisans ou non du magiage pour tous. Un important dispositif de sécurité avait été déployé pour éviter tout débordement. Quelques échauffourées auraient tout de même éclaté.

The nearly 3,000 lives stolen by al-Qaida were only a small part of the toll. The horror began a chain of events that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, including huge numbers of civilians abroad and many US military personnel. It is still unfolding.

If the killing of the plot’s mastermind Osama bin Laden a few months before the 10th anniversary perhaps let some hope that an end to that new era might be in sight, there can be no such false confidence at the 20th. Many Gays, Lesbians Still Don't Believe Male Bisexuality Is Real

ADVOCATE: A new study found people often viewed bisexual men as gay men who were not out, while respondents didn't view women the same way.

New research has provided evidence that systematic biases exist in how we perceive female and male bisexuality. Researchers found that bisexual men were more likely to be viewed as being attracted to men more than women, while the same was not true for bisexual women. They were viewed as being equally attracted to men and women.

Published in the European Journal of Social Psychology earlier this year, the study’s authors write that the findings, “add to the understanding of the unique bias bisexual people face by showing that perceived attraction patterns may underlie the labelling of bisexual men as ‘actually gay.’

A spate of violent attacks on Afghan journalists by the Taliban is prompting growing alarm over the freedom of the country’s media, with one senior journalist declaring that “press freedom has ended”.

As images and testimony circulated internationally of the arrest and brutal flogging of two reporters who were detained covering a women’s rights demonstration in Kabul on Wednesday, Human Rights Watch and the Committee to Protect Journalists raised concern over the recent string of attacks.

In just two days this week, the Taliban detained and later released at least 14 journalists covering protests in Kabul, with at least six of these journalists subject to violence during their arrests or detention, the CPJ reported.

Austrian Man Mummifies Dead Mother to Keep Receiving Her Benefits

Austrian police have discovered the body of an 89-year-old woman who died more than a year ago and was mummified in the cellar by her son who wanted to continue receiving her benefits.

In a statement, police said the woman, who is believed to have suffered from dementia, had died in June last year.

“The 66-year-old man kept her body in order to continue receiving benefits,” they said.

This world would be a far better, less violent place if we encouraged men to show a more loving, more caring, gentler side to their nature, instead of all this macho claptrap. The aggressive side of man’s nature is ugly. There is absolutely nothing manly in being aggressive and violent; in fact, quite the opposite! It takes courage to show one's gentler side. Any old fool can be aggressive and nasty. But it takes a real man to be gentle and caring – a man who is sure of his own masculinity. Incidentally, very often, the most homophobic of men are those who are least sure of their own true sexual orientation.

I have posted this ‘kissathon’ a few times before, because it is such a beautiful expression of gay love. Dans son petit local décoré d’affiches de mannequins aux coiffures excentriques, le barbier Hajji Barakatullah se fait aussi discret que possible. Lorsque deux jeunes hommes entrouvrent la porte dans l’espoir de se faire tailler la barbe, le petit homme rond se dépêche de la refermer sur eux, grommelant des excuses, l’air aussi dépité que ses clients perdus.

«Il y a une semaine, une poignée d’hommes armés ont fait irruption dans mon magasin. Ils m’ont ordonné de ne plus couper les cheveux à la mode occidentale, et de ne plus raser les barbes. Je dois leur obéir», explique-t-il. Son client du moment, un garçon d’une douzaine d’années, était tétanisé. «Il n’osait pas bouger. Il regardait la scène dans le miroir avec de grands yeux, comme si c’étaient des monstres», décrit le commerçant, une figure du quartier, qui a ouvert son salon il y a presque vingt ans.

Les ouvrages, supprimés des bibliothèques, ont été tout bonnement jetés, enterrés, voire brûlés, sous l'égide du Conseil scolaire catholique Providence, qui regroupe trente écoles francophones dans la région.

Des autodafés - baptisés «cérémonies de purification par les flammes» pour l'occasion - auraient notamment été perpétrés en 2019 «dans un but éducatif», comme en atteste une vidéo destinée aux élèves et mise en ligne par ledit Conseil. Afghan Women to Be Banned from Playing Sport, Taliban Say

Afghan women, including the country’s women’s cricket team, will be banned from playing sport under the new Taliban government, according to an official in the hardline Islamist group.

In an interview with the Australian broadcaster SBS, the deputy head of the Taliban’s cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, said women’s sport was considered neither appropriate nor necessary.

“I don’t think women will be allowed to play cricket because it is not necessary that women should play cricket,” Wasiq said. “In cricket, they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this.

Des centaines de milliers de personnes à travers le Brésil ont répondu présentes à l’appel du président brésilien, Jair Bolsonaro, mardi 7 septembre, lors de vastes manifestations en soutien au leader d’extrême droite. Ces derniers mois, Bolsonaro a vu sa popularité chuter dans les sondages, ses projets de loi rejetés par le Parlement, et l’étau judiciaire se resserrer autour de son clan. Une sécheresse record menace la reprise économique du géant latino-américain, ainsi que l’approvisionnement en eau et en énergie de millions de familles, d’entreprises et d’agriculteurs.

À un peu plus d’un an de l’élection présidentielle, l’ancien capitaine de l’armée est dans l’impasse. PARIS — Marilyn Garnier, a survivor of a terrorist attack at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris, can never forget that evening.

It was Nov. 13, 2015. Firecracker noises erupted at the back of the crowd. Her partner pushed her to the floor, where they lay still, overcome by the smell of blood and gunpowder. Bursts of gunfire punctuated a deathly silence.

“At that moment, you don’t think you are going to survive,” Ms. Garnier, now 30, recalled.

Nearly six years later, the historic trial of the those behind the 2015 attacks that also targeted an area outside France’s national soccer stadium and the terraces of cafes and restaurants in central Paris began on Wednesday in the French capital. It is expected to last a record nine months.

The coordinated attacks — a series of shootings and suicide bombings — were carried out by 10 Islamic State extremists who killed 130 people and wounded nearly 500, shaking France to its core. (One survivor who suffered from severe trauma and killed himself in 2017 was officially declared the 131st victim.)

Twenty men, including the sole surviving attacker, stand accused of charges — including murder and organizing a terrorist conspiracy — and will be tried by a panel of judges. Over 300 lawyers and nearly 1,800 plaintiffs will take part in the trial in a courtroom that can fit 550 people that was built specifically for the monumental proceedings. THE NEW YORK TIMES: This Sept. 11, a diminished president will preside over a diminished nation.

We are a country that could not keep a demagogue from the White House; could not stop an insurrectionist mob from storming the Capitol; could not win (or at least avoid losing) a war against a morally and technologically retrograde enemy; cannot conquer a disease for which there are safe and effective vaccines; and cannot bring itself to trust the government, the news media, the scientific establishment, the police or any other institution meant to operate for the common good.

A civilization “is born stoic and dies epicurean,” wrote historian Will Durant about the Babylonians. Our civilization was born optimistic and enlightened, at least by the standards of the day. Now it feels as if it’s fading into paranoid senility.

Joe Biden was supposed to be the man of the hour: a calming presence exuding decency, moderation and trust. As a candidate, he sold himself as a transitional president, a fatherly figure in the mold of George H.W. Bush who would restore dignity and prudence to the Oval Office after the mendacity and chaos that came before. It’s why I voted for him, as did so many others who once tipped red.

Instead, Biden has become the emblem of the hour: headstrong but shaky, ambitious but inept. He seems to be the last person in America to realize that, whatever the theoretical merits of the decision to withdraw our remaining troops from Afghanistan, the military and intelligence assumptions on which it was built were deeply flawed, the manner in which it was executed was a national humiliation and a moral betrayal, and the timing was catastrophic.

We find ourselves commemorating the first great jihadist victory over America, in 2001, right after delivering the second great jihadist victory over America, in 2021. A powerful earthquake has struck south-west Mexico near the beach resort of Acapulco, killing at least one man who was crushed by a falling post, and causing rock falls and damaging buildings.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said a 7.0 magnitude quake struck 11 miles (18km) north-east of the resort of Acapulco, Guerrero, in the early hours of Wednesday sending people running into the street for safety.

PINK NEWS: A gang of eight hooded assailants launched a “vicious” attack on a gay man in Madrid, Spain, in broad daylight, carving the word “faggot” on his backside.

Two months after the horrific killing of Samuel Luiz, a 24-year-old gay man, in A Coruña, Spain, sparked international outrage, another homophobic attack has shocked and repulsed Spain.

The 20-year-old victim was assaulted in the Malasaña neighbourhood at around 5:15pm Sunday afternoon (5 September). His attackers sliced him with a knife as they barked “maricón [faggot]” at him outside his apartment complex, Policía Municipal Madrid said according to elDiario, a Spanish-speaking news outlet.

The victim, who has not been named, was returning home when the group “with their faces covered, ran and cornered him” and followed him into the building entrance.

They called him a “s**teater” and “disgusting” as they slit his upper lip. The man later reported the incident at a police station in the capital city.

The level of impunity seemingly felt by the attackers left officials stunned, a police spokesperson told elDiario.

“This is the first assault of this kind we have heard of,” they said.

NEUE ZÜRCHER ZEITUNG: Die Taliban hatten nach ihrer Machtübernahme in Kabul versprochen, eine «inklusive» Regierung zu bilden. Getan haben sie nun das Gegenteil.

Es gibt dieses Wort, das die Taliban in den vergangenen Wochen fast mantraartig wiederholt haben. «Inklusiv», sollte die neue Regierung Afghanistans werden, es war eines der Versprechen, dass die scheinbar geläuterten Taliban den besorgten Afghanen und der internationalen Gemeinschaft gaben. Am Dienstagabend haben die Taliban ihre Regierung nun bekanntgegeben. Und es ist ganz anders gekommen.

«Inklusiv» ist diese Regierung nicht. Es ist eine Regierung der Sieger. Auf der Liste, die am Dienstagabend den Medien übergeben wurde, stehen einzig die Namen von ranghohen Talibanvertretern.
