Senior Tories Hold Talks to Discuss Ousting Liz Truss to ‘Rescue’ Party
THE OBSERVER: As new chancellor Jeremy Hunt rips up prime minister’s economic plans, Conservatives plot route to replace her

Senior Conservatives will this week hold talks on a “rescue mission” that would see the swift removal of Liz Truss as leader, after the new chancellor Jeremy Hunt dramatically tore up her economic package and signalled a new era of austerity.
A group of senior MPs will meet on Monday to discuss the prime minister’s future, with some wanting her to resign within days and others saying she is now “in office but not in control”. Some are threatening to publicly call on Truss to stand down after the implosion of her tax-cutting programme.
In a rearguard action to prop up the prime minister, her cabinet allies tonight warned MPs they would precipitate an election and ensure the Tories were “finished as a party” if they toppled a second leader in just a few months. » | Toby Helm , Political Editor, and Michael Savage | Saturday, October 15, 2022
Tories doing what they know best: ousting their leader when their leader is no longer any use to them. They did the same thing with Margaret Thatcher, even though she had won so many elections for the Party, Once they felt she might not any longer be able to win any more elections, she was thrown to the wolves.

Health and Teaching Unions Aghast at Jeremy Hunt’s New Era of Tory Austerity
THE OBSERVER: The chancellor sparked alarm among trade union leaders by promising ‘very difficult decisions’ for government budgets

Health chiefs, public sector unions and teaching leaders expressed horror on Saturday after the new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, appeared to usher in a fresh era of austerity, and the threat of more misery for cash-strapped hospitals and schools.
In his first interviews since dramatically replacing Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday, Hunt provoked widespread alarm by promising “very difficult decisions” for government budgets.
The NHS Confederation, which represents the healthcare system in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, warned the prospect of further cuts was “incredibly grim”.
The head of the largest teaching union for England and Wales denounced Hunt’s attempt to placate the financial markets as “disastrous” and “scary” for schools, while another teaching union, NASUWT, said deeper cuts would cause “immeasurable damage to children’s learning”. » | Mark Townsend, Home Affairs Editor, and Michael Savage, Policy Editor | Saturday, October 15, 2022
Jeremy Hunt is another Tory w*****r who is destined to fail! He has neither the strength nor the experience for this job. I am going to stick my neck out and state that he will fail.
The Tories have themselves created the hell that we are now living through. Why? Because of the fantasy of the benefits of Brexit. Brexit was, is and will always remain the stupidest of ideas. Anyone who truly thought that leaving the biggest and greatest single market this world has ever known—The Single Market—would bring benefits and prosperity to this weakened, isolated middle-ranking nation was either deluded, lied to or had sawdust for brains! Because of Brexit, we actually deserve all the pain we will have to live through!
Brexit will almost inevitably lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom. It is to be hoped that Scotland under Nicola Sturgeon’s superior leadership will be able to bring Scotland’s independence about. Scottish independence will/would be a role model for the rest of the Celtic fringe. Westminster is clearly no longer working for Scotland, Ireland or Wales.
As for England, Liz Truss needs to retire to her kitchen and start baking cookies. She has made a dog’s dinner of the UK economy. She and that Kwasi Kwarteng. Both of them deserve to be consigned to the dustbin of history!
If the government is strapped for cash, which it so clearly is, start taxing the superrich, the billionaire class, and bring in a windfall tax on the energy companies. For Christ’s sake, don’t expect the people, das Volk, to live through even more pain than they have already been forced to live through by successive incompetent Tory governments!
As I have said many times before on this blog, the Tories need to be consigned to the dustbin of history—and with dispatch!—just as the Whigs were consigned to the dustbin of history before them. The Party is made up of backward-thinking people, old fogeys, and fossils. This country needs a business-friendly party, for sure; but a forward-thinking one. A party which believes in equity and is Europe-friendly. This country needs to be placed in the heart of European politics. We, as a nation, have so much to offer Europeans; and Europeans have so much to offer us.
Outside of the European Union, this country will become poorer, its economy will go on shrinking, and it will become ever-more disunited. Of these things, I will assure you right here and now! — © Mark Alexander

Mini-budget Will Likely Mean Higher Interest Rates, Warns Bank of England Governor
THE GUARDIAN: Andrew Bailey says UK borrowers can expect to feel impact of Truss government’s tax and spending decisions
Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, says extra stimulus in last month’s mini-budget would force the Bank into tougher-than-expected action. Photograph: Drew Angerer/Getty Images
UK borrowers can expect to face higher interest rates as a result of the Truss government’s tax and spending decisions during its six weeks in power, the governor of the Bank of England has warned.
Despite the U-turn on corporation tax on Friday that saw the sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor, Andrew Bailey said the extra stimulus provided in last month’s mini-budget would add to inflation and force the Bank into tougher-than-expected action.
Bailey said he had impressed on the new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, the need for the public finances to be sustainable and that there had been a “clear and immediate meeting of minds”. Hunt used his first interview to stress mistakes made by Truss would require “difficult decisions” to be made. » | Larry Elliott | Saturday, October 15, 2022

How ‘Knives of the Long Night’ Led to Brutally Swift Kwarteng Sacking
THE GUARDIAN: The chancellor was dispatched soon after touching down, but Tory colleagues were not convinced that was enough to save the PM
Kwasi Kwarteng sacked: how his last 24 hours as chancellor unravelled – video
As the clock reached closer to midnight, Kwasi Kwarteng finished deliberating about heading home from Washington DC to attempt to save his political career.
He eventually boarded the final flight back to London, but when he reached Downing Street 12 hours later, he was sacked as chancellor on the spot. The “knives of the long night” episode, as it is now called, took place with brutal swiftness.
It was the culmination of a chaotic week in Westminster, which saw furious calls for an overhaul of Truss and Kwarteng’s mini-budget while her premiership teetered on the brink.
The mood of Tory MPs was already toxic, given their party conference in Birmingham had been plagued by a series of U-turns and blue-on-blue attacks. But to test the feeling of the public, Kwarteng did a walkabout through his leafy constituency of Spelthorne, in Surrey, last Friday.
While passing an estate agent, he waved through the window and stopped when a woman inside got up, seemingly to greet him. Instead, she is said to have come to the window, made an obscene gesture and told the chancellor he was a disgrace. » | Aubrey Allegretti, Jessica Elgot and Pippa Crerar | Friday, October 14, 2022

Authorities in Iran Forced to Remove Poster of Women in Hijabs after PR Fiasco
THE GUARDIAN: Montage in Tehran taken down within 24 hours after prominent women and relatives denounce use of their photos
At least three of the women pictured in the Tehran billboard objected to their image being misused, including the actor Fatemeh Motamed-Arya. Photograph: AFP/Getty Images
The Iranian authorities suffered a PR fiasco after being forced to take down a giant billboard in a central square in Tehran when women in the poster, or their relatives, objected to being depicted as supporters of the government and the compulsory-wearing of the hijab.
The billboard controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps was a montage of about 50 Iranian women wearing the hijab under the slogan “Women of my Land”. It was taken down within 24 hours after at least three of the women pictured said they objected to their image being misused.
Fatemeh Motamed-Arya, a multiaward-winning actor was the first to protest, releasing a video. Not wearing the hijab, she said: “I am not considered a woman in a land where young children, little girls and freedom-loving youths are killed in its fields.” » | Patrick Wintour, Diplomatic editor | Friday, October 14, 2022

Liz Truss Sacks Kwasi Kwarteng ahead of Corporation Tax U-turn
THE GUARDIAN: Chancellor shares letter saying he has accepted prime minister’s request for him ‘to stand aside’
In the letter, Kwarteng argues that the plan to rapidly cut taxes was the correct one despite the turbulent market reaction. Photograph: Tolga Akmen/EPA
Kwasi Kwarteng has announced that he has been sacked as chancellor by Liz Truss as the prime minister tries to restore her political authority ahead of a U-turn on parts of her disastrous mini-budget later on Friday.
In a tweeted letter to Truss, Kwarteng began: “You have asked me to stand aside as chancellor. I have accepted.”
Earlier, Downing Street sources had told the Guardian the prime minister wanted Kwarteng to “carry the can” over her climbdown as she sought to calm the markets and the nerves of jittery Tory MPs.

Good riddance! Now we need to get the bean counter to resign. I suggest she return to her kitchen and bake some cookies. That will give her plenty of time to think about her future.
When you employ people to do jobs they are not up to doing, to do jobs they are ill-qualified for, this is what you get: chaos and turmoil! The Tory Party is suffering from burn-out. Keir Starmer wants to “make Brexit work”. The problem is that nobody will ever be able to make Brexit work. Brexit is unworkable: it is impoverishing, divisive, and stupid, especially in a geopolitical world of giants.
The only pro-Europe party we have now is the Liberal Democrats, but its leader, Ed Davey, is strangely silent. He should be writing a manifesto for the upcoming general election, offering the electorate a chance to vote to re-enter the EU. The voters need to be given the option of reversing course. They can see now that Brexit is making Britain weaker, poorer and largely ungovernable. If the powers-that-be really want to keep the UK united, then the only way forward, as I see it, is for the country to ask our friends in Europe if they will accept us truculent enfants terribles back into the European family. Next time, I’m sure that the Europeans will be able to get a promise out of us that we will behave ourselves. – © Mark Alexander

Scottish Tory Leader Gets Laughed At in Awful Question Time Appearance
I have stated on this blog many times before that I think that the Conservative Party needs to go the way of the Whigs: into extinction! What they have done to this country, especially with and since Brexit is totally and utterly unforgiveable. We should never have been brought out of the European Union. Nobody in his right mind would walk away from the biggest single market in the world: The Single Market. One has to have sawdust for brains to believe that such an act of self-harm could lead to economic success.
As a result of Brexit, this country’s economy is forecast to shrink year on year for the next ten years. So what is this poppycock Liz Truss is talking about wanting “growth, growth, growth”? If she truly had wanted growth, she would never have changed her politics from being a Remainer to being a Brexiteer. Clearly, she did that for one reason only: for self-advancement.
She spouts extreme-right dogma about economic growth, the neoliberal idea that by making the already mega-rich richer still, economic growth will be stimulated. And then, by some miracle, some wonder, it will trickle down to the ‘little people’. That is balderdash: economic make-believe! Voodoo economics if you will.
So here we have it: an ex-bean-counter, an accountant, as a prime minister and a practitioner of voodoo economics as her chancellor. The results are plain to see; and will go down in the history books under the title, Tory Folly.
Let us hope that one day soon, this country will have a forward-looking, business-friendly, Europe-friendly party that will be capable of making this country prosperous and equitable. A party that understands that the economy must work for the many, not just the super-privileged few. © Mark Alexander

Brilliant, Prof! This cloud does have a silver lining though: This catastrophe has exposed the erroneous notion that only the Conservatives know how to handle the economy, only the Conservatives can be trusted with the running of the economy for the BIG lie that it is. – © Mark Alexander

‘Pig’s Ear’: Tory Press Raises Doubts about Liz Truss’s Future
THE GUARDIAN: Once-loyal papers such as the Sun and Daily Mail start to turn on PM amid financial turmoil
‘In her abject powerlessness she is like a leader who has been in office for years and has run out of options and support,’ says the Daily Mail. Photograph: Jessica Taylor/UK parliament/AFP/Getty
Conservative commentators are beginning to turn against Liz Truss, with rightwing newspapers such as the Sun and Daily Mail rounding on her for making a “pig’s ear” of the mini-budget, while other observers suggest her premiership could be extremely short-lived.
Though she was initially heralded by some as a prime minister to drive through true-blue policies with the most radical reforms in decades, unease is growing in Tory circles about her leadership.
Recent market turmoil, a series of screeching U-turns and the expectation more will follow are compounding jitters about Truss’s future.
The Daily Mail, in its editorial on Thursday, reserved the top slot in its three-pronged editorial column to savage the Bank of England governor, Andrew Bailey, but used the second to raise concerns about Truss. It said her “dash for growth is already limping badly after she made a pig’s ear of presenting her ambitious mini-budget and was forced into humiliating U-turns”. » | Aubrey Allegretti, Political correspondent | Thursday, October 13, 2022

Nb: ‘My brother’ (اخي) can sound rather stilted when speaking directly to another in English. Not so in Arabic. One hears it frequently when an Arab speaks to another Arab. Of course, it does not normally have a gay connotation; rather, it usually refers to one’s brother in Islam. – Mark Alexander
Devenir Marilyn | Documentaire | ARTE Cinema

Italia Squisita: Omelette in a 3 Michelin Star French Restaurant with Donato Russo - Mirazur***
Omelette is the best known and most widely reproduced French comfort food. Two ingredients for a recipe as simple as full of pitfalls. To learn its secrets, we have been to Menton, inside Mauro Colagreco's 3 Michelin star restaurant Mirazur. The young (and very excited) chef de cuisine Donato Russo started with the classic recipe of the French omelette, and then presented a soft and delicious variant created with the soufflé technique. To combine the two recipes a touch of Italian style given by the original use of a great Italian cheese.

"This Time Feels Different": Iran's Women & Youth-led Protests Grow amid Brutal Crackdown
The mullahs should be toppled. Death to the Islamic Republic of Iran! The mere concept of a theocracy is a nonsense anyway. The theocracy in Iran is especially nonsensical, since no god worthy of being worshipped would ever condone such brutality towards his creation. This mullocracy is nothiing but a cruel and corrupt regime. The good and proud people of Iran deserve better, they deserve their liberty. – © Mark Alexander

Adam Silvera Is Writing the Books He Wished He Had as a Queer Teen
Adam Silvera gets as close to his characters as his readers do. The first—and only—time he cried while writing was at the death of the main character in his third young adult novel, 2017’s ‘They Both Die at the End’. He’d spent so much time outlining the story, he says, that “I knew that kid.”
Both books follow queer love stories with Latinx protagonists. “I am dead set on writing queer characters for the rest of my life,” he explains. “I’m a queer man. I don't need to contribute to the canon of heterosexual literature."
Author Adam Silvera is one of TIME Magazine's 2022 Next Generation Leaders.

Russlands Soldaten | ARTE Re:
Menschenrechtlerin Nadjeschda saß bereits viermal in Haft.

Kerala's TJ Joseph: The Indian Teacher Whose Hand Was Cut Off for an Exam Paper
BBC: In 2010, the hand of a professor in India was cut off by extremists after he was accused of insulting Islam in an exam paper. Last month, the government banned the controversial Muslim group Popular Front of India (PFI), whose members had carried out the attack. The BBC travelled to Kerala to piece together the grisly incident and its aftermath.
Warning: This article contains details some readers may find distressing.
TJ Joseph remembers the attack from 12 years ago vividly.
It was a rainy July morning. Prof Joseph, then a 52-year-old teacher of Malayalam language at a local college, was driving home with his mother and sister after Sunday Mass in Muvattupuzha, an idyllic town in the southern state of Kerala set on the banks of a river by the same name.
Barely 100m from his house in a leafy, undulating lane, a Suzuki minivan barrelled down, took a sharp turn and blocked his hatchback.
The door of the minivan opened, and six men burst out. One of them ran up to Prof Joseph's car. He was carrying an axe.
As the man approached the driver's door and tried to yank it open, another man, brandishing a dagger, brought up the rear. Three others reached the passenger's side where his sister was sitting.
Cowering at the wheel of his four-year-old Wagon R, his engine switched off and the driver's side window smashed into pieces by a blow of the axe, Prof Joseph realised he was trapped. » | Soutik Biswas, India correspondent | Thursday, October 13, 2022

US Democrats Threaten Saudi Arabia with Arms Freeze over Oil Output
THE GUARDIAN: Congress members raise prospect of one-year sales ban unless kingdom reverses Opec+ decision to cut production

Democrats in the US Congress have issued a fresh ultimatum to Saudi Arabia, giving the kingdom weeks to reverse an Opec+ decision to roll back oil production or face a potential one-year freeze on all arms sales.
The threat came as Joe Biden reiterated his pledge to take action over Riyadh’s decision last week to cut oil output by 2m barrels a day, which Democrats have said would help “fuel Vladimir Putin’s war machine” and hurt American consumers at the petrol pump.
The White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told reporters the US president was also looking at a possible halt in arms sales as part of a broader re-evaluation of the US relationship with Saudi Arabia, but that no move was imminent. » | Stephanie Kirchgaessner and Julian Borger in Washington | Wednesday, October 12, 2022

» | Gilles Paris, Editorialiste | mercredi 12 octobre 2022

Marilyn - Made in Hollywood | Doku HD | ARTE
Wasserstoffblondes Haar, kurvige Figur, roter Lippenstift: Marilyn Monroe.
August 1962 in Los Angeles.

August 1962 in Los Angeles.

Gay Afghan Man Brutally Murdered by the Taliban in Bid to ‘Eradicate’ LGBTQ+ People
PINK NEWS: A young gay man has been shot dead by the Taliban in Afghanistan because of his sexuality.
Hamed Sabouri, from Kabul, was killed in August, local activists have told PinkNews. He was just 22.
He was reportedly kidnapped by the Taliban and a video showing his murder sent to his family days later.
Bahar, another gay Afghan who knew the victim personally, told PinkNews Sabouri had dreams of becoming a doctor, but his hopes were stolen from him when the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
He described Hamed as a “shy” gay man with an infectious laugh.
“Life is hell for every LGBT Afghan,” Bahar said.
“Taliban terrorists are worse than wild animals.”
Bahar, who is a member of Afghanistan’s growing LGBTQ+ organisation the Behesht Collective, deleted all the pictures and videos he had of Sabouri on his phone after he learned of his murder.
Bahar lives in fear of being stopped and searched by the Taliban – he’s afraid that he would also be killed if they found out about his sexuality.

Bread for the People I ARTE.tv Documentary
For months Turkey has been in the grip of a monetary crisis coupled with rampant inflation. The price of bread, by far the most important staple food in the country, has doubled in a year. Even the middle class is now finding it increasingly difficult to get by.

We Are All Raised on a Diet of Bullshit, Legend, Myth and Fable
MARK ALEXANDER – ESSAY: We in the Occident are raised on lies and make-believe. People in the Orient are no different, except that the stories they are told and forced to believe are different from ours. But for our purposes today, let us stick to the fabulous stories we are fed from birth.
We are fed these stories throughout life: it goes on from the cradle to the grave. The crap keeps on coming our way unrelentingly!
It all starts at birth. The early crap is pretty and pretty harmless. It stretches from the tooth-fairy to Father Christmas coming down our chimneys at Christmas. I am not quite sure about those hapless kids who live in houses that don’t have chimneys (but that’s a story for another day). Having travelled through the sky on his pretty little sleigh, packed full with parcels and presents for the children in the whole wide world, being drawn by his helpful and extremely hard-working reindeer: Dasher, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph (the most famous and helpful of all the little critters).
Then, when we have grown up a little, that story is moulded a different way: we are told about the story of Jesus, the shepherds who watched their flocks by night, and the three kings who brought the baby Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh.
All well and good and pretty harmless. Children lap it up, as indeed did I.
As one gets older, one learns to modify the story to make it easier to swallow and a tad more believable.
The problems with all these stories, myths and legends is that some people never seem to grow out of them. They believe them throughout life. Never coming to the point of realising that whilst there might be an element of truth in some of these stories, much is simply embellishment and make-believe.
However, the children’s stories are generally rather harmless. But as we age, we get told far more nonsensical stuff. We are taught to fear the Almighty and the all-seeing God. Such myths are told to us to control our behaviour of course, told to us to make us behave in a way that the authorities can control us in an acceptable way. This is where it starts to get sinister.
Then, as we get older, the government gets involved. At this point the real nonsense starts being told! And it is truly unrelenting. In recent years, we have had scares about the eating of eggs, the drinking of coffee, the big one about the eating of saturated fat, the amount of salt we eat, the exercising myth, the extreme dangers of smoking cigarettes and tobacco. Smoking. Ah, that will make you prematurely wrinkled, give you all manner of cancers, your hair will fall out, as will your teeth, you will lose your limbs and become impotent! Moreover, you will stink to high heaven of that awful substance called tobacco. Your teeth will be yellow and your gums will shrink and bleed. Smoking is the root of all evil in today’s world. Naturally, most of it is a load of BS.
Then we come to the myths and legends told us by the politicians. Lizzie Truss and Kwazi Kwarteng’s crap, for example, is the latest nonsense we have been told. The utter crap that cutting taxes for the rich will shore up growth. IT WILL NOT! And nor will giving more money to the richest in society trickle down to the middle and working classes. They sold us that crap back in the Eighties under Thatcher. What we ended up with is a wealth gap today not seen since the Gilded Age and a society built on greed and egocentricity. Who cares for his neighbour anymore? You can forget Christianity with such a politico-economic doctrine. All you will get is a widening wealth gap, a growth in foodbanks, a growth in homelessness, more selfishness and a society based on greed.
I shall add more to this another day. Suffice it to say that we are being led by liars and incompetent fools. We are being force-fed nonsense. We need to change course if we truly wish to save the Occident. In the UK, the Tories are incapable of the course change.

What Happened When Her Entire Family Came Out
Coming out is a most liberating experience. It is difficult to explain to a straight person the feelings one experiences. It is also often difficult to explain to a straight person why it is so important to come out. Many straight people, perhaps most of them, just don’t get it. They have no understanding of what it does to one to live a life that isn’t authentic. Ignorance about being gay abounds. So many straight people think that being gay is about sex. It is not; sex, at least as far as I am concerned, is the very least of it. I don’t even like the term homosexual; rather, I prefer the term, which I made up, homo-emotional. Homosexual has got the S-word written into it; homo-emotional, by contrast, means that one gets one’s emotional support from a member of the same sex. It is perfectly possible to be ‘homosexual’ and not engage in sex at all! Go figure that one out!
It takes a long time to come to terms with one’s sexuality; indeed, some people never do. But even when one does, it is a long, winding and painful road to travel. But once one is out of the closet, there’s no going back. Only real men can come out. Coming out is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a sign of strength and, often, of masculinity. Weak men could never come out: they wouldn’t have the courage to do so.
All I know is this: Coming out doesn’t solve all of one’s problems; but I would never ever wish to return to the closet. It would be unthinkable. – © Mark Alexander

IMF Criticises Kwarteng Again over Tax Cuts and Energy Package
THE GUARDIAN: Fund says chancellor’s measures have made Bank of England’s battle against inflation more difficult
Kwasi Kwarteng has come under fresh fire from the International Monetary Fund after the Washington-based organisation said his tax cuts and energy support package had made the Bank of England’s battle against inflation more difficult.
The IMF used its prestigious world economic outlook (WEO) to criticise the scale of the stimulus provided by the chancellor and the blanket nature of the price cap on gas and electricity bills.
It said the UK was on course for a sizeable slowdown in growth from 3.6% this year to 0.3% in 2023 but said its forecasts had been made before Kwarteng delivered his mini-budget on 23 September. » | Larry Elliott in Washington | Tuesday, October 11, 2022

» | Nina Belz, Paris | Dienstag, 11. More German Businesses Go Bankrupt amid Weak Economy, High Inflation | DW News
A sharp uptick in the number of German firms beginning insolvency proceedings is raising eyebrows in Europe's largest economy. Some 762 firms declared bankruptcy in September — a 34% increase from the same period last year.
And the upward-trend is set to continue this month and the next, according to the Halle Institute for Economic Research. Its new report suggests that by November up to 40% more companies could be beginning insolvency proceedings, compared to the same period last year.

Wales: Skeletons: Remains of 240 People under Haverfordwest Store
BBC: The remains of more than 240 people, including children, have been unearthed by archaeologists working on the remnants of a medieval priory found beneath a former department store.
The "hugely significant" discovery was made under the old Ocky White building in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Archaeologists believe the ruins are from St Saviour's Priory, founded by a Dominican order of monks in about 1256.
One expert said it offered a "window into medieval Haverfordwest".
Ocky White was a popular store for more than a century before its riverside premises closed in 2013.
Site supervisor Andrew Shobbrook, from Dyfed Archaeological Trust, described the priory as a significant complex of buildings with dormitories, scriptoriums - rooms devoted to writing and manuscripts - stables and a hospital.
"It's quite a prestigious place to be buried. You have a range of people, from the wealthy to general townsfolk," he said.
It is believed that the graveyard could have been used until the early 18th Century. » | Aled Scourfield, BBC News | Tuesday, October 11, 2022
