Iran Urges Muslims to Challenge Saudi Arabia’s Oversight of Holy Sites
DUBAI—Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday questioned Saudi Arabia’s fitness to oversee Islam’s holiest places and accused kingdom’s rulers of murder in last year’s deadly hajj pilgrimage stampede.
“Because of these rulers’ oppressive behavior toward God’s guests, the world of Islam must fundamentally reconsider the management of the two holy places and the issue of hajj,” Mr. Khamenei said Monday in a challenge likely to worsen already hostile relations between the two political and religious powers just days ahead of the start of this year’s hajj to Mecca. » | Asa Fitch and Margherita Stancati | Monday, September 5, 2016

German Anti-immigrant Party Beats Merkel's Party in Her Home State
In a stinging defeat for Merkel in her home district one year ahead of federal elections, the upstart AfD won 21.4 percent of the vote in their first election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by campaigning hard against the chancellor's policies on refugees, according to a projection by ZDF TV at 1615 GMT.
"This isn't pretty for us," said Michael Grosse-Groehmer, one of Merkel's top deputies in parliament in Berlin in a ZDF TV interview. "Those who voted for the AfD were sending a message of protest." » | By Erik Kirschbaum and Andrea Shalal | BERLIN | Sunday, September 4, 2016

Margaret Thatcher Would Not Have Supported Brexit, Says Top Aide
Margaret Thatcher would never have supported Error! Hyperlink reference not valid. or the holding of an in/out referendum, her longest-serving and most trusted former foreign policy adviser has told the Observer.
Lord Powell of Bayswater, who was at Thatcher’s side during her most epic confrontations with Brussels during the 1980s, said the Eurosceptic former prime minister would always have preferred to battle the EU from within, whatever the scale of her frustrations, rather than opening the door to exit.
“Of course she got fed up with it, but I don’t believe that as prime minister she would ever have campaigned to take Britain out of Europe or had a referendum to allow that to happen,” he said. “She wanted to change Europe and she set out to change it with great vigour, but I don’t believe she would have chosen this way and she would have avoided getting trapped by the referendum promise.
“She never had any truck with referendums and frequently spoke out against them.” » | Toby Helm | Saturday, September 3, 2016

Burkini Must Be Banned, Says Nicolas Sarkozy As He Launches Presidential Election Campaign
In the first big speech of his campaign to win back the office he lost in 2012, Mr Sarkozy stole many ideas of the far-Right Front National, promising to reclaim France “for the French”.
“I refuse to let the burkini impose itself at French beaches and swimming pools ... there must be a law to ban it throughout the Republic’s territory,” he said to thunderous applause during a speech in Provence, a stronghold of the Front National. » | Peter Foster, Europe Editor and James Rothwell | Thursday, August 25, 2016
