37 Women Accuse “Sexual Predator” Mohamed Al-Fayed of Rape and Assault | BBC News

Sep 21, 2024 | Lawyers representing 37 women who say they were raped or sexually assaulted by Mohammed Al-Fayed say he was a monster and sexual predator, whose behaviour was enabled by Harrods, the luxury London department store he owned until 2010.

Mohamed Al-Fayed was an Egyptian, billionaire businessmen, whose residence and main business interests were in the UK for decades. He owned Harrods, Fulham Football Club in West London, and the Ritz Hotel in Paris.

His son Dodi was in a romantic relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales when they died in a car crash in Paris.

Mohamed Al-Fayed died in 2023 at the age of 94. The current owners of Harrods say they're appalled by the allegations and have put a settlement process in place for alleged victims.

A former manager of Fulham FC's women's team has said that female players weren't allowed to be left alone with the billonaire when he owned the club, because it was well known that he liked 'young, blonde girls'.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Helena Wilkinson, Daniel Sandford and Laura Scott.

"Disgusting" Tucker Carlson Says Rape Victims Are “Part Of The Problem”

In an attempt to prove that he is just as heartless and disgusting as everyone else on the network, Fox News host Tucker Carlson said this week that rape victims who “wait too long” to report their assault are part of the problem. Perhaps Tucker needs to go back and watch all of the negative coverage his network has given to the women who do step forward and then maybe he’ll understand why it is so difficult for women to speak out. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

German Women Report String of Sexual Assaults by 'Arab and North African Men'

THE TELEGRAPH: Mayor of Cologne to investigate "outrageous" series of New Year's Eve attacks on women by large gangs of men “of Arab or North African appearance”

Police in Germany are investigating an alarming series of sexual assaults on women trying to celebrate the New Year by large groups of single men “of Arab or North African appearance”.

Authorities in the city of Cologne are to hold a crisis meeting on Tuesday after police described a group of some 1,000 men who took over the area around the main station on New Year’s Eve.

Women were robbed, groped, and had their underwear torn from their bodies, while couples had fireworks thrown at them.

Police have received 90 criminal complaints, around a quarter of them for sexual assault, including one case of rape.

Police in Hamburg say there was a series of similar incidents in the city’s Reeperbahn red-light area. Witnesses described groups of five to 15 men of who “hunted” women in the streets.

In Cologne, the attacks took place around the main station, opposite the cathedral, a traditional gathering spot to see in the New Year. » | Justin Huggler, Berlin | Tuesday, January 5, 2015

Norwegian Rape Case Woman Allowed to Leave Dubai

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A Norwegian woman who was imprisoned in Dubai after telling police she had been raped won her fight for freedom on Monday as the emirate's ruler pardoned her for the crime of extramarital sex.

Marte Dalelv said she was overjoyed that her ordeal was finally over, after four months fighting a jail sentence in a case which highlighted the tension between Dubai’s courtship of Western investors and visitors and its strict Islamic laws. “I have my life back,” the smiling 24-year-old told reporters. “I am free, finally”.

Ms Dalelv had been convicted by a Dubai court last week of extramarital sex, perjury and consuming alcohol without a permit and sentenced to 16 months in prison. The verdict, she told press, was a shock - coming despite DNA, medical and witness evidence that she said proved her claims.

Meanwhile, her alleged rapist was also pardoned. He had been given a lesser sentence of just 13 months for extramarital sex. » | Hannah Strange | Monday, July 22, 2013

Norwegian Woman Who Reported Being Raped in Dubai Is Jailed for 16 Months

MAIL ONLINE: Norwegian woman, 25, was in Dubai on a business trip / She was raped and reported the incident to the police / At the station, police took her passport and jailed her / She will now serve 16 months for illicit sex outside marriage

A young Norwegian woman has been sentenced to 16 months in jail after she reported a rape in Dubai.

The 25-year-old was in the United Arab Emirates on a business trip when she was raped and reported the assault to the local police.

Dubai police did not believe her, and instead took her passport and jailed her on suspicion of having had sex outside marriage.

The Norwegian woman reported the sexual assault in March this year, after which she had to spend days in a cell before she was allowed to use a telephone.

With the help of family members, the Norwegian consulate was able to negotiate a release and she has been living under the protection of the Norwegian Sailor’s Church until her sentencing this week.

'I received the harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking alcohol and on top of that I was found guilty of perjury,’ the woman told Verdens Gang.

‘It is a terrible situation she is in,’ said Gisle Meling, the priest at the Norwegian Sailor’s Church.

‘We are very surprised and had hoped it would go another way, but we live in a country which has a justice system which draws its conclusions with the help of Sharia law.’ » | Sara Malm | Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Man Linked to Saudi Prince Draws 10-Year Term for Rape

THE NEW YORK TIMES: A member of the traveling entourage of a Saudi prince was sentenced on Thursday to 10 years in prison for the rape of a 26-year-old woman who fell asleep in his room at the Plaza Hotel after a night of barhopping.

During a two-week trial that ended in February, the woman and a friend testified that the man, Mustapha Ouanes, now 61, had introduced himself to them at a bar in Greenwich Village in January 2010. Wearing a finely tailored suit and hat, he seemed harmless, they testified, so they accepted his invitation for an early morning breakfast at the hotel.

After eating, drinking more and smoking hashish, the women fell asleep on the bed in Mr. Ouanes’s hotel room and awoke to find him raping one of them, they said. » | Russ Buettner | Thursday, June 07, 2012

Morocco Activists Target 'Rape Marriage Law'

Amina Filali was just 15 when she was allegedly raped, and was subsequently pressured by judges and - by some accounts - her own mother, to became the child bride of her rapist. A few months later Filali killed herself, reportedly because she was unable to endure ill-treatment from her husband. Filali's incident has brought the marriage of minors and the marriage of victims to their rapists to the fore. Now, activists in Morocco have staged a mock trial as part of their campaign to rid the 50-year-old "oppressive" article from the country's law books. Al Jazeera's Khadija Magardie reports.

Gaddafi 'Raped Countless Women during Years in Power', Claims New Documentary

MAIL ONLINE: German broadcaster RTL is to screen controversial programme next week / It includes interviews with the late dictator's inner circle / Report claims women were attacked within moments of meeting Gaddafi

Late Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi raped countless women during his years in power, according to an explosive new documentary.

German broadcaster RTL is set to screen the controversial programme - which includes interviews with his inner circle - next Monday.

Reporter Antonia Rados said; 'There were many women in Libya spellbound by Gaddafi who wanted to meet him. And when they did he raped them.'

She said that his female bodyguards, who were supposed to lay down their lives to protect him, were also victims.

A prominent Libyan psychologist Dr Seham Sergewa said he knew of at least five of his Amazonian bodyguards who were raped by him.

Rape as a means of subduing the population was also passed on to soldiers and loyal militias who were provided with condoms and Viagra to encourage their assaults. Read on and comment » | Allan Hall | Tuesday, April 03, 2012

US Expands Definition of Rape to Include Men

THE GUARDIAN: Obama administration broadens definition to include more forms of assault in first major update since 1927

The Obama administration on Friday broadened the definition of the crime of rape to include more forms of sexual assaults such as rape of men and oral or anal sex, the first major revision to the definition in more than 80 years.

The new definition will include any gender of the victim and attacker and also assaults in which a victim cannot give consent because the individual has been incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, is under the age of consent, or is mentally or physically incapable of consent, the justice department said.

"This long-awaited change to the definition of rape is a victory for women and men across the country whose suffering has gone unaccounted for over 80 years," vice president Joe Biden said in a statement. » | Reuters | Friday, January 06, 2012

Iran Giving Out Condoms for Criminals to Rape Us, Say Jailed Activists

THE GUARDIAN: Smuggled letters allege authorities are using mass rape as a weapon inside Iran's most notorious prisons

Prison guards in Iran are giving condoms to criminals and encouraging them to systematically rape young opposition activists locked up with them, according to accounts from inside the country's jail system.

A series of dramatic letters written by prisoners and families of imprisoned activists allege that authorities are intentionally facilitating mass rape and using it as a form of punishment.

Mehdi Mahmoudian, an outspoken member of Iran's Participation Front, a reformist political party, is among those prisoners who have succeeded in smuggling out letters revealing the extent of rape inside some of the most notorious prisons. » | Saeed Kamali Dehghan | Friday, June 24, 2011
