Suicide Bombing Near Pakistan Mosque Kills At Least 52 People

THE GUARDIAN: Blast occurs at gathering in Balochistan to celebrate birthday of prophet Muhammad

At least 52 people have been killed and more than 50 injured in a suicide attack near a mosque to mark the birthday of the prophet Muhammad in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, health officials and police said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast, which comes amid a surge in the number of attacks claimed by militant groups in the west of the country before national elections scheduled for January next year.

“The bomber detonated himself near the vehicle of the deputy superintendent of police,” the deputy inspector general of police, Munir Ahmed, told Reuters, adding that the blast occurred near a mosque where people were gathering for a procession to mark Muhammad’s birthday, which is a public holiday.

The Pakistani Taliban, an umbrella group of various hardline Sunni Islamist groups, denied it had carried out the attack. » | Reuters and Associated Press | Friday, September 29, 2023

Indonesia: Suicide Bombers Attack Church after Palm Sunday Mass | DW News

At least 20 people have been injured in a suicide bombing outside a Catholic cathedral in the Indonesian city of Makassar. Authorities say two bombers were killed in the attack. Churches have been targeted in Indonesia in the past by Islamic extremists. Pope Francis said he would pray for the victims, who were attending Palm Sunday Mass.

The beginning of Easter week is a holy time for Christians. But in Makassar the celebrations were marred by violence. As worshippers were leaving Sunday Mass, two suspected suicide bombers set off explosions outside the Indonesian city's main Catholic cathedral. One of them was said to be a woman.

President Joko Widodo called for calm, saying his government would ensure people of all faiths can worship without fear. Places of worship in Indonesia have been targeted before. Police are investigating if this attack is linked to religious extremism.

The majority Muslim country has a history of Islamist attacks. Indonesia has been on high alert in recent months following the arrest of the prominent leader of an extremist group. Counterterrorism squads have arrested dozens of suspects across the country, including in Makassar.

Islamic State Claims Suicide Bombing at Saudi Arabian Mosque

THE GUARDIAN: Ten members of emergency services and three mosque workers killed when bomber detonated vest during noon prayers in Asir

The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in a Saudi Arabian mosque that killed at least 13 people, including 10 members of a Saudi special forces unit, the latest in a spate of such attacks in the Gulf kingdom.

Isis said in a statement circulated on social media that it had targeted the men because they enabled the rule of Saudi Arabia’s monarchs and their western backers, and because they allegedly tortured Isis sympathisers.

The group pledged further attacks in the Arab world, and boasted of its ability to pierce Saudi security measures.

“We bring evil tidings to the Arab tyrants in the coming days, God willing,” the statement said. » | Kareem Shaheen in Beirut | Thursday, August 6, 2015

Afghanistan: Kabul Suicide Bomber at Supermarket Targets Western Diplomats

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: An Afghan suicide bomber targeting British diplomats killed up to nine people when he blew himself up in a supermarket servicing Kabul's expats in a wealthy district yards from the British embassy.

Afghan intelligence officials said four Filipinos and two Afghans were confirmed among the dead when a lone gunman opened fire, threw at least one grenade and then detonated his explosive harness.
Women and a child were among those killed.

The Taliban immediately took responsibility in a text message claiming it had targeted the chief of the Blackwater security contracting firm.

The 2.30pm (10am GMT) blast struck Finest Supermarket in the relatively secure central Wazir Akbar Khan district which is popular with embassies.

The shop is across the road from the fortified British embassy compound and is frequented by expats for its range of Western groceries. Witnesses said the shop was full of foreigners on what is the Afghan weekend.

Mehrab Gol, who sells mobile phone cards outside the shop, said: "The suicide bomber fired first and then threw a grenade and then he blew himself up. >>> Ben Farmer, Islamabad | Friday, January 28, 2011

Suicide Bomber Kills 17 at Afghan Public Bath

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A suicide bomber killed 17 people and wounded another 21 in assassinating a police commander at a public bath in a southern Afghan town on the border with Pakistan, the local government said.

"A suicide bomber blew up explosives strapped to his chest at a public bath in Spin Boldak," border police official General Abdul Razaq said.

He put the death toll at 13, but the provincial government spokesman later confirmed that at least 17 people had died in the attack.

"Twenty-one people were also wounded," said the spokesman, Zalmay Ayoubi, from the provincial capital, Kandahar. >>> | Friday, January 07, 2011

Egyptian Christians Mourn Dead in Suicide Bomb Attack on Church

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Dozens of grieving Egyptian Christians attended Sunday Mass at the Saints Church in Alexandria guard where 21 worshippers were killed in an apparent suicide bombing.

Riot police in armoured vehicles were deployed outside the blood-spattered church as Egyptian newspapers warned that "civil war" could break out unless Christians and Muslims close ranks after a deadly attack on a Coptic church that triggered angry protests.

The authorities said that a suicide bomber blew himself up outside Al-Qiddissin church in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria early on New Year's Day, killing 21 people and wounding 79 others.

The service was marked by the grief and anger felt by a congregation devastated by the attack, which took place Saturday outside the church's door about 30 minutes into the New Year.

Many sobbed while others cried hysterically, screamed in anger or slapped themselves. "They died, they died," a woman kept saying.

Some lamented that attacks on Christians and churches often happen during usually happy occasions like Christmas and New Year. Others complained that the government was not doing enough to protect churches. >>> Telegraph’s Foreign Staff | Sunday, January 02, 2011

British Ambassador Survives Suicide Bomb Attack in Yemen

THE TELEGRAPH: The British ambassador to Yemen has survived a suicide bomb attack by terrorists in the capital Sana'a.

The ambassador, Timothy Torlot, was in a convoy travelling to the embassy, situated on a hill overlooking the city, when the bomb was detonated on Monday morning.

One person was confirmed by the Yemeni authorities to have died, but it is not clear whether they were referring to the attacker, who was said to have been blown to pieces.

They confirmed that no-one from the embassy was killed, while Mr Torlot himself was said to be unhurt.

Witnesses said the attacker had failed after being "slow" to get close to the vehicle in which Mr Torlot was travelling.

The attack will add to concerns over Yemen's instability and use as a base by terrorist groups including al-Qaeda. >>> Richard Spencer, Middle East Correspondent | Monday, April 26, 2010

Islamic Scholar Says Suicide Bombers Will 'Go to Hell'

Shaikh ul-Qadri is explicit in his condemnation of suicide bombings, kidnappings and the killing of innocents which he describes as absolutely against the teachings of Islam?

THE INDEPENDENT: A respected Islamic scholar will publish a seminal fatwa tomorrow that unequivocally condemns terrorism and warns suicide bombers that they will “go to hell” for their attacks.

Pakistani-born Shaikh Dr Tahir ul-Qadri is launching his fatwa in London as part of a drive to combat the power of jihadist rhetoric on the web and provide English-speaking Muslims with an authoritative theological explanation detailing why terrorism is not permitted.

Although numerous fatwas condemning terrorism have been released by scholars around the world since 9/11, Shaikh Dr Qadri’s 600-page ruling is both significant and unusual because it is one of the few available in English and online. >>> Jerome Taylor, Religious Affairs Correspondent | Monday, March 01, 2010
