THE TELEGRAPH: Hundreds of Muslim Wargraves Defaced on Islamic Feast Day

Five hundred war graves in the Muslim part of a military cemetery in northern France have been found sprayed with Nazi symbols on the day of an important Islamic feast.

A dozen or so Jewish tombstones were also defaced.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack in the Notre-Dame de Lorette military cemetery near Arras, where 30,000 First World War soldiers are buried.

The rows of white headstones, marking the graves of Muslim soldiers who died fighting for France, were spray-painted with neo-Nazi slogans such as "Heil Hitler." Some had lettering whose meaning was unclear.

It was the third attack in two years on the site's Muslim section, which has 576 tombs. Last April, 148 tombs were desecrated and a year before that 52 headstones and an ossuary were vandalized. >>> By Henry Samuel in Paris | December 8, 2008

BBC: Vandals Hit French Muslim Graves

The graves of as many as 500 Muslim war veterans have been vandalised in northern France, in an attack President Nicolas Sarkozy said was "repugnant".

Gravestones were daubed with swastikas and letters spelling out anti-Islamic slogans at France's biggest military graveyard near Arras in the north-east.

The attack took place on the eve of Islam's Eid al-Adha festival, when Muslims visit the graves of loved ones.

Dozens of police searched the graveyard on Monday as an investigation began.

It is the third time the Muslim sector of the Notre Dame de Lorette cemetery has been attacked.

President Sarkozy called the latest incident "abject and revolting" and said it was "the expression of a repugnant racism directed against the Muslim community of France". >>> | December 8, 2008

>>> | 8. Dezember 2008

Medvedev Congratulates Muslims on Eid Al-Adha

One can only wonder whether strong man Medvedev really believes this twaddle. First it was Dubya issuing such statements from the White House; now it’s Dmitry issuing them from the Kremlin. – Mark

INTERFAX: Moscow - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Russian Muslims on the main Islam holiday Eid Al-Adha, the Kremlin press service reported.

"This is a significant religious holiday for each Muslim which symbolizes peace and kindness, all forgivingness and care of friends. It reminds of the basis of Islam, which calls for justice and mercy, nourish respective attitude to panhuman values in peoples," the felicitation reads.

The ancient holiday of Eid Al-Adha is widely celebrated in modern Russia, the president said. "Hajj is performed every year.

Prayers for the welfare of the motherland can be heard in mosques. For those professing Islam, these bright days are the time of spiritual improvement and attention to those in need," he said.

"Maintaining the traditions of many centuries, you contribute to ensuring the spiritual and cultural diversity of our country, assist mutual understanding, tolerance and interethnic consent in Russian society," Medvedev said.

Austria Lacks a Culture of Human-rights

AUSTRIAN TIMES: The European Network against Racism (ENAR) based in Brussels claims in its latest report that Austria lacks a culture of human-rights.

The report says that human- and civil-rights groups in Austria are rarely in a position to pressure the federal government on important issues. "In Austria, there appears to be no tradition of discussing and fighting for human rights," it adds.

Every step forward in the area of human rights in Austria since World War II has been the result of foreign pressure, and Austrian human-rights organisations have had to solicit it in order to change racist structures in the country, the report continues. >>> | December 3, 2008

Teen Stoning Death Casts Shadow on Conference

IOL.CO.ZA: A 13-year-old girl begged for mercy moments before a mob buried her up to her shoulders and stoned her to death.

The Somali youngster is said to have pleaded "Don't kill me, don't kill me!" before her horrific execution in front of a 1 000-strong crowd in late October.

Convicting a girl of 13 years for adultery is illegal under sharia law, but the authorities argued that she lied about her age.

Amnesty International and the United Nations International Children's Fund said the girl, identity known to this publication, was raped while travelling to see a relative in Mogadishu.

Her family is said to have tried to report the crime to the militia who control Kismayu, only for Aisha to be arrested and accused of adultery. None of the men she accused of rape was detained.

The stoning that sent shockwaves around the world in October formed a sombre backdrop to the Sixth African Development Forum (ADF) on gender violence and women's empowerment hosted by the Economic Commission for Africa. >>> By Zarina Geloo and Joyce Chimbi | December 8, 2008

Americans Elected Obama into Office; Now Americans Are Going to Have to Pay the Price!

TIMESONLINE: The US economic crisis will deepen next year, Barack Obama warned the country yesterday when he announced the first details of a stimulus package that could ultimately exceed $1 trillion.

The President-elect, giving the most extensive interview since winning the election a month ago, spoke the day after he announced the biggest public works construction programme since Dwight Eisenhower created the interstate highway system half a century ago.

In saying twice that “things are going to get worse before they get better”, Mr Obama was not simply reflecting the realities of the stricken US economy but seeking to gain political advantage from the financial crisis.

By talking up the scale of the recession, the President-elect was lowering expectations for what he can achieve next year while seeking to justify what will, in effect, be the greatest injection of federal money into the US economy since the Depression-era New Deal.

The economic crisis is so great that Mr Obama and his economic team now believe that nothing less than a giant stimulus package is needed. The depth of the worsening recession has presented him with an extraordinary mandate to throw hundreds of billions of dollars at the problem – an opportunity that he did not have even a few weeks ago – and with it the chance to fund much of his hugely expensive legislative agenda.

The economic conditions – combined with a Democratic-controlled Congress – mean that Mr Obama is perhaps the most powerful incoming President, in terms of the ability to pass legislation quickly, since Lyndon Johnson took office in 1963. Barack Obama Says He Has Quit Smoking - Sort of

THE TELEGRAPH: US President-Elect Barack Obama said he will not be lighting up in the smoke-free White House.

But he failed to give a straight answer when asked on a US talkshow on Sunday whether he had managed to quit smoking.

In a country where cigarettes are responsible for one in five deaths and smoking costs tens of billions of dollars in health care, the president-elect has been under pressure to set an example by giving up his reported two-decade-old habit.

Perhaps more to the point, Mr Obama's wife, Michelle, reportedly insisted he renounce cigarettes as a condition for allowing him to run for president. On the campaign trail, Mr Obama was seen habitually chomping on nicotine gum.

Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press", interviewer Tom Brokaw noted that the White House is a no-smoking zone, and asked Mr Obama: "Have you stopped smoking?"

"I have," Mr Obama replied, smiling broadly. "What I said was that there are times where I have fallen off the wagon." >>> | December 7, 2008

London Doctor Is Held as Forced Marriage Hostage

THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY: Race is on to release trainee GP lured to Bangladesh by family, held captive, beaten, and about to marry a stranger against her will. Nina Lakhani reports

British lawyers were this weekend working frantically to rescue a London doctor who has been beaten and held captive in Bangladesh in an attempt to force her into marriage. Dr Humayra Abedin, known as Dorothy to her friends, this weekend faces being forced to marry a complete stranger, unless efforts by lawyers to free her, using new powers, succeed.

Dr Abedin is being held hostage by her family in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, where she is thought to have been gagged, bound and violently beaten to get her to comply with her parents' wishes. The 33-year-old trainee GP is depressed, suicidal and without hope, according to an email she managed to send to a close friend last Friday. This is the first time friends have heard from Dr Abedin for more than three months.

Her parents and uncle were yesterday served with a Forced Marriage Order issued by the British High Court on Friday. Dr Abedin, who has worked as a doctor in the Britain since 2002, is among the first cases to be heard under the Forced Marriage Act which came into force on 25 November. The move came after the family ignored orders from the Bangladeshi high court to bring Dr Abedin to court.

The new legislation allows judges to issue protection orders to prevent forced marriage and help to rescue victims who have already been married off. Those convicted of forcing people into marriage can be jailed for up to two years. >>> | December 7, 2008

Amsterdam's Brothels and Cannabis Cafés Furious over Mayor's 'Clean-up'

THE GUARDIAN: Dissent grows over a planned crackdown on prostitution and drugs aimed at curbing organised crime in the red-light district

Amsterdam has long been famed for its relaxed approach to prostitution and soft drugs, making the Dutch city one of the most popular destinations for tens of thousands of Britons on stag and hen parties.

But all that may be about to change. As part of a major 'clean-up' of the city centre, the local authorities yesterday unveiled plans to close half of the brothels and the little coffee shops where cannabis can be bought and smoked, prompting warnings that they will cost the city dear as visitors head elsewhere.

Although prostitution has been legal for eight years, and possession of small amounts of drugs has long been tolerated, the latest moves mark an escalation in the culture wars in a country that many of its people believe has become too liberal.

At the heart of the new initiative is the city's drive against the organised crime that it claims gravitates to the areas with high concentrations of 'coffee shops', brothels and the 'windows' where women advertise themselves.

While Amsterdam has long been held up as a model of the argument in favour of the legalisation of soft drugs and the sex trade, its critics counter that the windows and coffee shops mask the violent reality of organised crime. 'By reduction and zoning of these kinds of functions, we will be able to manage and tackle the criminal infrastructure better,' the city said in a statement.

Opponents of the clean-up - including coffee-shop owners and the prostitutes' union, De Rode Draad (Red Thread), which represents 20,000 Dutch prostitutes - told The Observer yesterday that they believed that, far from reducing crime, it would encourage drug dealers and prostitutes to go underground in areas where they were banned.

They also warned that the new clampdown on drugs and the sex industry would have a profound effect on the economics of a city famous for both things. 'Amsterdam is the city of sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll,' said Metje Blaak, a spokeswoman for De Rode Draad, which provides health screening and other training for its members.

'Now we have no sex. No drugs. The women will go on the streets and to the hotels. It is very bad, not least in terms of women's health and safety. The mayor has not listened to the women or the coffee shops,' she added. >>> Peter Beaumont | December 7, 2008

Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor: Britain Is 'Unfriendly' for Religious People

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain has become an "unfriendly" place for religious people to live, according to the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor claims that the rise of secularism has led to a liberal society, hostile to Christian morals and values, in which religious belief is viewed as "a private eccentricity" and the voice of faith groups is marginalised.

The cardinal warns that Britain shows signs of degenerating into a country free of morals, because of its rejection of traditional values and its new emphasis on the rights of the individual.

There are now "serious tensions" between Christians and secularist society, he says, in which atheists are becoming more "vocal and aggressive".

Writing in a book on multiculturalism, to be published on Monday, the Cardinal argues that immigrants have a duty to adjust to British life, but expresses concern that they are faced with a culture that is increasingly repressive and intolerant. He says that while the country has become more diverse and pluralistic, the Christian values which have shaped its identity should not be abandoned.

he book, called Faith in the Nation, is published by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), with the backing of the Prime Minister. In it the cardinal says: "Religious belief of any kind tends now to be treated more as a private eccentricity than as the central and formative element in British society that it is.

"Although the tone of public discussion is sceptical or dismissive rather than antireligious, atheism has become more vocal and aggressive."

Britain's most senior Catholic leader says that the "unfriendly climate for people of all faiths" has united the country's three major faiths, Christianity, Judaism and Islam. >>> By Jonathan Wynne-Jones, Religious Affairs Correspondent | December 6, 2008

Obama will in Amerika investieren: Grösstes Infrastrukturprogramm seit 50 Jahren angekündet

>>> | 6. From Berlin to Beijing, Chancellors and Presidents Feel the Strain

THE GUARDIAN: The deepening world recession has dented prospects for many of the world's leaders trying to contain the financial fallout

The financial crisis has already changed the face of the political world. It decisively tipped the US election in Barack Obama's favour, tarnishing John McCain with the brush of Republican economic mismanagement. It brought Gordon Brown back from the political dead, making him appear statesmanlike, assured. It helped Nicolas Sarkozy turn his approval ratings round, as he too sought to offer crisis leadership and this week produced a package heavily larded with populist measures. A handful of other leaders around the world are having a "good" crisis, most notably Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, another economic populist, who is basking in 70% approval ratings.

But across much of the world, it has been hard to avoid one of the intractable laws of politics - when the economy goes south, the people in charge get the blame. Canada's prime minister, Stephen Harper, is feeling the pain most acutely this week, but just about everyone running a substantial economy anywhere must now be worrying about their own job security. That goes too for those untroubled by the necessity of holding elections. Popular wrath has other ways of making itself felt. >>> Julian Borger | December 6, 2008

BAE Accused of £100m Secret Payments to Seal South Africa Arms Deal

THE GUARDIAN: More than £100m was secretly paid by the arms company BAE to sell warplanes to South Africa, according to allegations in a detailed police dossier seen by the Guardian yesterday.

The leaked evidence from South African police and the British Serious Fraud Office quotes a BAE agent recommending "financially incentivising" politicians.

In the arms deal, the new ANC government in South Africa agreed to spend a controversial £1.6bn buying fleets of Hawk and Gripen warplanes.

Critics said the country, beset by unemployment and HIV/Aids, could not afford it. The Hawks, rejected by the military, cost twice as much as Italian equivalents.

But the then South African defence minister Joe Modise and a key official, Chippy Shaik, insisted on the purchase.

BAE is accused in the reports of corrupt relationships with an arms tycoon, John Bredenkamp, recently blacklisted in the US for his links with Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Bredenkamp's blacklisting freezes his assets in the US.

BAE's former marketing director for southern Africa, Allan McDonald, has been speaking to police, the leaked files say. He allegedly told them Bredenkamp "gave progress reports directly to Mike Turner". Turner, who has been interviewed under caution by the SFO, stepped down last year as BAE's chief executive.

Bredenkamp-linked companies were paid £40m by BAE to promote the arms deal. According to McDonald, "Bredenkamp suggested identifying the key decision-makers, with a view to 'financially incentivising them' to make the right decision". >>> David Leigh and Rob Evans | December 6, 2008

Asylum Seekers Riot in Athens

DAILY EXPRESS: Hundreds of migrants waiting to submit asylum applications rioted in central Athens, setting fire to rubbish bins and attacking passing cars.

Protesters said the riot began when one man fell into a nearby canal after authorities told the crowd that no more applications could be submitted. Only a small number of applications can be submitted each week.

It was not immediately clear how the man fell into the canal. Police said he was injured and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. They said they were investigating the incident.

Outraged asylum-seekers began setting fire to rubbish bins and throwing them into the street, and ripped branches off trees to set them alight. A smaller group threw rocks at passing cars, stopping some vehicles and banging on them with their hands. There were no reports of any passers-by being injured.

The riot lasted for about an hour, and riot police who were on standby nearby did not intervene. A fire truck extinguished the blazes. >>> | December 6, 2008

BBC: Fresh Riots Erupt in Greek Cities

BBC: Thousands of protesters have attacked banks and shops in Athens and Greece's northern city of Thessaloniki, angered by the police's killing of a teenager.

Demonstrators threw petrol bombs, rocks and other objects at the buildings and at police, who responded with tear gas.

Greek Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos has appealed for restraint.

The streets of the capital were already strewn with glass and rubble after a night of rioting sparked by Saturday's shooting, in the Exarchia district.

Police said Saturday's riots had left 24 police officers injured, one seriously, and 31 shops, nine banks and 25 cars damaged or burned.

Six people were arrested, one of them for carrying a weapon.
Alex Hadjisavvas, the owner of a shop on Patission Avenue in central Athens, told the BBC that many nearby businesses had been looted.

"The window was smashed, the shop front damaged and a large quantity of stock taken from inside has been used by the rioters as material to start street fires," he said.

The unrest, the worst in the country in several years, later spread to Thessaloniki and the southern island of Crete. >>> | December 7, 2008

THE TELEGRAPH: Third Day of Rioting in Greek Cities

Greek rioters have fought police in Thessaloniki and Trikala in a third day of violence sparked by the death of a 15-year-old boy shot by Athens police on Saturday night.

In Athens, protesters continued to occupy two university campuses and block main road and rail systems, with the rioters promising fresh demonstrations in five cities on Monday night.

About 15 protesters also occupied the Greek consulate in Berlin, taking down its flag and raising a banner that read: "Murderer state".

About 300 students in Thessaloniki, the country's second-largest city, were reportedly battling riot police on Monday morning, setting alight rubbish bins and attacking cars and shop fronts.

At the same time a policeman in Trikala, a small town in central Greece, was injured in fighting.

The authorities in the capital were preparing for a mass rally by the Communist party, still a powerful force in the east Mediterranean state.

On Saturday night and throughout Sunday, Greek cities endured the worst street violence seen for years as youths fought police.

The clashes erupted after police shot dead 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Exarchia, a neighbourhood of central Athens. >>> | December 8, 2008

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Demonstrators Occupy Greek Consulate in Berlin

A group of 30 demonstrators has occupied the Greek consulate in Berlin to protest the killing of a teenager by police in Athens on Saturday night. The Berlin protesters are behaving peacefully.

Some 30 people pushed their way into the lobby of the consulate at Wittenbergplatz in western Berlin at around 9.40 a.m. local time, said SPIEGEL TV reporter Martin Heller, who is on the scene.

Around 120 German police cordoned off the area outside the consulate and negotiations are underway with the demonstrators, who were behaving peacefully and had made no demands, police said. Could This Woman Be Vladimir Putin's Real Mother?

THE TELEGRAPH: Little is known about the childhood of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, despite his position as one of the world's most powerful men. Now in an extraordinary development, a Georgian woman has come forward to say she is his mother.

Vera Putina, 82, has claimed he is the child she gave away at the age of ten, giving an account of an unhappy childhood which is fiercely disputed by the Kremlin:

Vera Putina lives hand-to-mouth in rural Georgia but displays the famous hospitality of the people of the Caucuses. Draping a cloth over the table in her garden, she piles it with fruit, nuts and shot glasses of chacha – homemade vodka.

Her house sits on a dirt track in the village of Metekhi, about 12 miles from Gori which was occupied by Russian tanks this August during the conflict over the breakaway state of South Ossetia. A tiny woman, with gnarled worker's hands, only Mrs Putina's strong cheekbones and deep-set, piercing blue eyes are suggestive of who she claims she is.

"I used to be proud of having a son who became President of Russia. Since the war I am ashamed."

Since Russian-born Mrs Putina saw Vladimir Putin on the television in 1999, she has been convinced he is her estranged son. Backed up by other residents in Metekhi, Mrs Putina claims he lived in the village between the ages of two-and-a-half and ten before being sent back to his grandparents in Ochyor, Russia.

Records in the archives of Metekhi's closest town, Caspi, indicate that a Vladmir Putin was registered at Metekhi school, 1959-1960, stated nationality: Georgian.

Mrs Putina's account is at odds with the Kremlin's version of events and Dmitry Peskov, Mr Putin's spokesman, yesterday dismissed the claims: "The story is not true. It does not correspond to reality at all." >>> By Kate Weinberg in Georgia | December 5, 2008

Religion Today

ASSOCIATED PRESS: CAIRO, Egypt — Early in the morning two Sundays ago, hundreds of Christian Egyptians quietly slipped into a former underwear factory where they had discreetly set up a church and held their first service. Bells rang and hymns were sung.

A crowd of angry Muslims quickly gathered, threw stones at the building and burned banners that said, "No to the church." They tried to storm the gates, clashed with police and chanted, "The church has fallen, the priest is dead," according to witnesses.

In fact, no one died, but 13 people were reported injured. For Egyptians in general, the incident in the blue-collar district of Ain Shams served as a warning that Muslim-Christian clashes, largely confined to the south of the country in recent years, have seeped into the capital.

Tempers are flaring as Islamic conservatism gains ground and Christians grow increasingly resentful about discrimination by the Muslim majority. The Ain Shams incident highlights that even in Cairo — seen as more cosmopolitan in its sectarian relations than the rural south — suspicions run between the communities. Muslim and Christian neighbors also are competing over who can set up houses of worship and where.

"We don't want to hear their hymns and for sure, they don't want to hear our prayers," a Muslim woman who lives in the area said as she shopped at a dairy store. >>> By Maggie Michael | December 3, 2008

OJ Pleads for Light Sentence over Kidnapping

An emotional OJ Simpson today pleaded with a Las Vegas court not to hand him a tough sentence following his October convictions of 12 criminal charges including kidnapping and armed robbery.

His voice trembling as he apparently fought back tears, Simpson insisted: "I did not know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought that I was confronting friends and retrieving my property. So I am sorry. I am sorry for all of it." >>> By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles | December 5, 2008

Dezember 2008

49 Arrested for 'Satanic' Clothes

NEWS.COM.AU: POLICE have arrested 49 people this week in a northern Iranian city during a crackdown on "satanic" clothes, according to an IRNA news agency report.

The measures are the latest in a country-wide campaign against Western cultural influence in the Islamic Republic, where strict dress codes are enforced.

"Police confronted rascals and thugs who appeared in public wearing satanic fashions and unsuitable clothing," Qaemshahr city police commander Mahmoud Rahmani told IRNA.

Mr Rahmani also said that five barber shops were shut and 20 more warned for "promoting Western hairstyles".

In the past, such crackdowns have lasted a few weeks or months, but the current campaign was launched in 2007 and has not let up.

It includes measures against men sporting spiky "Western" hairstyles or women wearing tight trousers and high boots.

Women are supposed to wear clothing that covers their hair and disguises the shape of their bodies. But some, particularly in cities, wear headscarves pushed back well beyond their hairlines and sport tight-fitting outfits. >>> From correspondents in Tehran | December 4, 2008

A Russian Church for a Saudi Mosque?

THE WASHINGTON TIMES: This delightful story just came in thanks to getreligion.org: The Saudis have recently asked permission to build a mosque in Moscow, a city where there are only four mosques and 2 million Muslims. The Russians, however, are saying they want, in return, an Orthodox church in Saudi Arabia.

As we all know, the Saudis have a habit of constructing mosques in dozens of world capitals while forbidding houses of worship for any religion whatsoever outside its Wahabist brand of Islam. They've gotten some bad PR locally for some of the hate language in textbooks at the Saudi Academy in northern Virginia. Not only are hapless Christians terrorized and jailed for daring to hold private prayer services in Saudi Arabia, but God help them should they try to convert someone to their religion. And that's for a fellow People of the Book: One can only guess at what the treatment of Buddhists and Hindus must be like.

Wouldn't it be so ironic if the Russians were the first Christian body to win acceptance of the right to build a church in, say, Riyadh? (Some of the Russians are calling for a church in Mecca, but the chances of any other religion getting a foothold within walking distance of the world center of Islam is less than zero.) Of course we all know the Saudis aren't about ready to let Bibles or other religious literature, let alone a church, anywhere near their homeland, but all the same, it's amusing to see the Russians give the Saudis a taste of their own medicine. New Dark Age Alert! The Global Force Behind Mumbai’s Agony Is In Our Midst

THE SPECTATOR: Stephen Schwartz and Irfan Al-Alawi say that LET — the Army of the Righteous — is a worldwide Islamist organisation which is well-established in Britain. The Mumbai atrocities are further proof that the march of Islamic extremism is the central fact of our time

The usual suspects are declaring that the ‘cause’ of the Mumbai bombings was Kashmir or some other local grievance. But what happened in Mumbai was no more a local event than the 7 July 2005 attacks in London or the assault in Madrid on 11 March 2004. Pakistani propaganda about its claims in Kashmir is almost entirely phony rhetoric intended to justify the predatory instincts of the Pakistani army and intelligence bureaucrats. Pakistan insists that Kashmiri Muslims are oppressed by India, but in fact Indian Muslims live better than Pakistani Muslims and have demonstrated a better capacity for true Islamic thinking.

The attacks on Mumbai are part of a global problem, which is why a passive Western policy toward the crisis is not acceptable. It may appear comforting to bien-pensant representatives of the ‘progressive’ elite. But in reality it represents an attitude of suicidal and irresponsible disengagement from confrontation with a continuing threat. In Mumbai, as in London, Madrid and New York, but also in the Islamic cities of Iraq, Istanbul and Jakarta, and in places like Peshawar and Quetta in Pakistan, a wide network of Muslim fundamentalists continue their global offensive.

The common enemies of all civilised humanity in the ongoing conflict include Saudi Wahhabism and Pakistani jihadism, the latter inspired by a fundamentalist variant of Islam called Deobandism. What Western appeasers must remember is that Pakistan, like Saudi Arabia before it, is two-faced, professing to oppose terrorism while powerful factions in its leadership espouse it. >>> Stephen Schwarz | December 3, 2008

Patriarch Alexiy II, Head of Russian Orthodox Church, Dies

TIMESONLINE: Patriarch Alexiy II, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, died this morning, aged 79.

Russia's first post-Soviet Orthodox leader died at his residence outside Moscow, a church spokesman said. The cause of death was not given, although the Patriarch had been in poor health for some time and diplomats in Moscow have said that he was suffering from cancer.

Alexiy II was elected head of the Orthodox Church in 1990 and oversaw its restoration to a dominant role in Russian society thanks to open support from the Kremlin under Boris Yeltsin and in particular Vladimir Putin, the former KGB officer.

Patriarch Alexiy's links with the Kremlin were clouded by allegations that he himself had been a long-serving KGB agent codenamed "Drozdov" (the thrush), who had been awarded a "certificate of honour" for his service by the Soviet authorities in 1988. He was accused of providing information on dissident priests, and the KGB even sent him to England in 1969 on a mission with a church delegation.

As Patriarch, however, he oversaw the restoration of the Church's authority in Russia after the fall of Communism as churches were rebuilt and reopened across the country. He was seen as a unifying national figure, his moral strictures and benevolent appearance offering certainty at a time of extreme economic hardship and political upheaval.

Alexiy II also presided over a reunification ceremony at Christ the Saviour cathedral in Moscow last year that ended an 80-year schism with the Orthodox faithful whose families had fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.

His death after an 18-year reign is likely to prompt an outpouring of grief in Russia, which has experienced a profound religious revival since the collapse of the Soviet Union. State television screened images from Alexiy's life, accompanied by the sound of tolling church bells, immediately after the announcement of his death. >>> Tony Halpin, Moscow | December 5, 2008

Patriarch Alexiy II, who died on Friday, had an extraordinary career, in which he switched from suppressing the Russian Orthodox Church to being its champion.

A favourite of the KGB, he was promoted rapidly through the Church hierarchy, doing the Kremlin's bidding at a time when dissident priests were thrown into jail.

As the Church's effective foreign minister, he helped cover up the repression of Russian Christians, defending the Soviet system to the outside world.

He rose quickly through the ranks, being elected head of the Russian Orthodox Church at a crucial time, in 1990, with the Soviet Union on the path to collapse.

Surprisingly, perhaps, he seized the moment, and went on to oversee the revival and flowering of the Church, exuding moral authority and inspiring devotion among his followers.

British Missionaries Charged with Sedition in Gambia

THE TELEGRAPH: A British couple who moved to Gambia to work as Christian missionaries have been arrested and charged with sedition.

David and Fiona Fulton, aged 60, and 46, were last night in police custody at separate cells in the West African state, which has a 90 per cent Muslim population.

The couple, originally from Troon, Scotland were detained on Saturday but have been unable to raise raise enough local people to vouch for them to secure their release on bail.

Mr Fulton, who is being held at Mile Two prison, a high security jail outside the capital Banjul, is said to be in poor health, and is refusing food. Mrs Fulton is at a police station with their adopted two-year-old daughter Elizabeth.

The pair appeared in court in Banjul yesterday accused of sedition, a serious charge brought against people suspected of undermining the government.

A friend of the couple said they feared the missionaries, who moved to Gambia 12 years ago, had fallen victim to power games in the tiny African state.

"As a chaplain part of David's job is to provide comfort to all sorts of people, people high up and people low down – and people who have perhaps fallen out of favour," said the friend, who did not wish to be named.

"I don't know of anything they have done that could be called sedition. Their whole focus has been teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

"Sedition is a serious crime anywhere. The penalty would not be light. >>> By Matthew Moore | December 5, 2008
