Vatican Blocks Caroline Kennedy Appointment as US Ambassador
THE TELEGRAPH: The Vatican has blocked the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador, according to reports.

Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Ms Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

Mr Obama was reportedly seeking to reward John F Kennedy's daughter, who publicly gave her support to his election bid. First Peek at Caroline Kennedy's Policy Positions
NEWSDAY: ALBANY - In a first peek at her positions on policy matters, Caroline Kennedy supports gay marriage rights, restoring a ban on assault weapons and keeping the Bush administration's tax cuts in place for now.



She backs President-elect Barack Obama's drawdown plan for U.S. troops in Iraq and also supports abortion rights.



Kennedy aides offered the positions yesterday, after The Buffalo News last week sent her inquiries involving several policy areas she would have to consider if she were selected by Gov. David A. Paterson to succeed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.



In a trip to Buffalo and other upstate cities last week, Kennedy publicly announced her interest in succeeding Clinton, who has been nominated to become U.S. secretary of state in the new Obama administration.

In response to the questions about where she stands on the issues, Kennedy responded through an e-mail statement from her spokesman, Stefan Friedman.



Gun control: She supports gun control efforts and specifically wants restored the ban on assault weapons that was lifted during the Bush administration.



Gay marriage: She supports "full equality and marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples."



Death penalty: She opposes the death penalty.
