Being Gay and Out in Mumbai - True Story Documentary Channel

Jan 8, 2022 | Under British colonial rule in 1860, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalized any sexual acts between consenting adults of the same sex, stigmatizing them as “against the order of nature”.

On 2nd July 2009 the Delhi High Court passed a landmark judgment repealing this clause, thus fulfilling the most basic demand of the Indian LGBTQ community, which had been fighting this law for the past 10 years.

The film documents the diverse lives of three members of Mumbai’s LGBT community, Beena, Pallav and Abheena, who travel through the city heading to the celebrations for the first anniversary of the historic verdict.

Through the personal stories and struggles of the three protagonists, the film explores the reality of living a queer identity in today’s India, between tradition and change.

Out in Mumbai is the story of their journey towards freedom.

Mumbai Bans Lingerie-clad Mannequins to Save Men from 'Impure Thoughts'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Mumbai, home of India's increasingly raunchy Bollywood film industry, is to ban mannequins modeling lingerie from its shop windows to stop the city's men having "impure thoughts".

Representatives on the city's local authority have voted to ban the models in a move they believe may reduce the number of rapes and sexual assaults.

Local councillors, known as corporators, said mannequins dressed in lacey underwear, stockings and suspenders, had led to a "pollution of minds" among men in the city, which has India's second highest number of rapes after Delhi.

Opponents said the mannequins were not as suggestive as erotic sculptures and carvings at celebrated temples like Khajuraho, which feature scenes of group sex and bestiality. » | Dean Nelson in New Delhi | Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Police Trained by SAS to Prepare for Mumbai-style Attacks

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Police are being trained by the SAS and armed with more powerful weapons to prepare for a possible Mumbai-style terror attack in the UK.

Security chiefs are staging a series of counter-terrorism exercises with police sharpshooters training alongside special forces units, the BBC said.

The development follows the interception last month by British intelligence officials of a credible al-Qaeda-linked plot.

That would have reportedly been similar to the deadly commando-style raids in Mumbai, India, two years ago, which left 166 people dead and several hundred injured.

Cities in France and Germany were also targeted as part of the plot. >>> | Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Canada Tells Muslim Speaker to Stay Home, Imam Says

THE STAR (TORONTO): Zakir Naik of India booked to headline Toronto conference

Muslim televangelist Zakir Naik has been told he will be turned away if he tries to enter Canada, a Toronto imam said Tuesday.

Banned from entering Britain last week, Naik is scheduled to headline the three-day Journey of Faith conference July 2-4 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

But over the weekend, a Canadian embassy official in New Delhi phoned Naik, who lives in Mumbai, to say he will be refused entry, said conference chairman Said Ragaeh.

At the same time, nothing was put in writing, Ragaeh said.

“We have no confirmation yet. No one has told us anything,” he said. “There is no file number, no official letter, nothing.”

On a Canadian visit last year, Naik received a five-year entry visa, which is still valid, said Ragaeh, who says they will continue to promote Naik as the conference headliner until he is given official notice of the ban. >>> John Goddard, Noor Javed, Staff Reporters | Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Mumbai Attack Gunman Sentenced to Death

THE TELEGRAPH: The only gunman to survive the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai has been sentenced to death by an Indian court.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, a 22-year-old Pakistani citizen, was found guilty on Monday of 86 charges, including waging war against India, murder and terrorism offences for his role in the attack on India's financial capital that left 166 dead.

Judge M.L. Tahaliyani said the man described by prosecutors as a "killing machine" should be hanged.

"I don't find any case for a lesser punishment than death in the case of waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts," the judge said. >>> | Thursday, May 06, 2010

Mumbai Gunman Faces Death Penalty After Conviction

THE TELEGRAPH: The lone surviving gunman involved in the Mumbai attacks in which 166 people died is facing the death penalty after being convicted mass murder and waging war on India.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, 22, was jointly responsible for the assault on the railway station where 52 people were gunned down.

He was convicted on 86 charges of waging war against India, possessing explosives and aiding and abetting the murders of all 166 victims.

Kasab and his fellow militants from the Lashkar e Taiba (LeT) terrorist group struck at three hotels, a bar, a Jewish centre and the city's main station in an attack lasting 60 hours.

His victims included the head of Mumbai's antiterrorist police in a shoot-out as he left the railway station. Their murders wiped out the city's antiterrorist command and sabotaged its response.

India's Home Minister, P Chidambaram, welcomed the verdict and said it sent a clear message to Pakistan that "they should not export terror to India. If they do, and if the terrorists are apprehended, we will be able to give them exemplary punishment," he said. >>> Dean Nelson in New Delhi | Monday, May 03, 2010

British Tourists Warned Over India Terror Plot

SKY NEWS: British tourists travelling to India have been warned to be on their guard amid reports of a terrorist plot against Westerners.

Pakistani militants are planning a wave of strikes at tourist sites including Delhi, Mumbai and Goa in the south, according to reports.

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice - advising travellers to be extra vigilant on days of national significance including Diwali on October 17.

The level of threat remains unchanged at "high".

The warning follows news that Israel has warned its citizens to avoid the country completely.

According to Israeli media - including the country's Channel Two - intelligence sources believe al Qaeda operatives are planning to target Western and Jewish tourists.

The plots are said to be styled on the attacks in Mumbai last November when 10 gunmen went on the rampage.

Mumbai's anti-terrorism force said they had been liaising with Israel over the intelligence. >>> | Friday, September 18, 2009

New Dark Age Alert! The Global Force Behind Mumbai’s Agony Is In Our Midst

THE SPECTATOR: Stephen Schwartz and Irfan Al-Alawi say that LET — the Army of the Righteous — is a worldwide Islamist organisation which is well-established in Britain. The Mumbai atrocities are further proof that the march of Islamic extremism is the central fact of our time

The usual suspects are declaring that the ‘cause’ of the Mumbai bombings was Kashmir or some other local grievance. But what happened in Mumbai was no more a local event than the 7 July 2005 attacks in London or the assault in Madrid on 11 March 2004. Pakistani propaganda about its claims in Kashmir is almost entirely phony rhetoric intended to justify the predatory instincts of the Pakistani army and intelligence bureaucrats. Pakistan insists that Kashmiri Muslims are oppressed by India, but in fact Indian Muslims live better than Pakistani Muslims and have demonstrated a better capacity for true Islamic thinking.

The attacks on Mumbai are part of a global problem, which is why a passive Western policy toward the crisis is not acceptable. It may appear comforting to bien-pensant representatives of the ‘progressive’ elite. But in reality it represents an attitude of suicidal and irresponsible disengagement from confrontation with a continuing threat. In Mumbai, as in London, Madrid and New York, but also in the Islamic cities of Iraq, Istanbul and Jakarta, and in places like Peshawar and Quetta in Pakistan, a wide network of Muslim fundamentalists continue their global offensive.

The common enemies of all civilised humanity in the ongoing conflict include Saudi Wahhabism and Pakistani jihadism, the latter inspired by a fundamentalist variant of Islam called Deobandism. What Western appeasers must remember is that Pakistan, like Saudi Arabia before it, is two-faced, professing to oppose terrorism while powerful factions in its leadership espouse it. >>> Stephen Schwarz | December 3, 2008

India Will Not Bow Before Terrorism, Says Sonia Gandhi

THE TELEGRAPH: India will give a "befitting reply" to last week's attacks in Mumbai (Bombay) and will not "bow before terrorism," the leader of the ruling Congress party Sonia Gandhi said on Wednesday.

"We will never bow before terrorism. We will give a befitting reply," Ms Gandhi said at a rally in Indian Kashmir.

"We have taken several steps to have a friendly and brotherly relationship with our neighbours," she said, but warned: "It should not be taken as our weakness."

State elections are under way in Kashmir despite poll boycott appeals by Muslim separatists and rebels opposed to Indian rule in the scenic region.

"We are ready for talks with anyone who wants to see a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute," Ms Gandhi said. "There will be no talks with the people who work against humanity." >>> | December 3, 2008

In an online article written following the devastating attacks in Mumbai, in which almost 200 people were killed, Asher Intrater said, “Islamic Jihad is an international movement - coordinated, planned, and well-financed. Its goal is to destroy Western civilization, kill Christian missionaries, and destroy the State of Israel. It is deeply rooted in Islamic religious indoctrination. Muslim Graveyard Refuses to Bury Terrorists in Mumbai

TIMESONLINE: A Muslim graveyard in the heart of Mumbai has broken with Islamic tradition and refused to bury the bodies of nine terrorists who were killed during the attack on India's financial capital.

The influential Muslim Jama Masjid Trust, which runs the 7.5-acre Badakabrastan graveyard, said it would not bury the gunmen because they were not true followers of Islam.

Hanif Nalkhande, a spokesman for the trust, said: "People who committed this heinous crime cannot be called Muslim. Islam does not permit this sort of barbaric crime." >>> Nico Hines, and Rhys Blakely in Mumbai | December 1, 2008

Joseph Klein: Off the Table

FRONTPAGEMAG.COM: Islam was born as a religion spread through violence. There is a direct line from the prophet Muhammad to today’s Islamic terrorists, whose latest deadly attacks wreaked havoc in Mumbai, India. The ongoing effort in the United Nations and the politically correct media to disassociate Islam from terrorism is a sham.

Just days before the Mumbai attack, a United Nations Committee passed a resolution entitled “Combating Defamation of Religions”, which will be going to the General Assembly for approval in mid-December. It is one in a series of such resolutions pushed by the Organization of Islamic Conference. While ostensibly applying to all religions, it refers only to Islam by name. The text “expresses deep concern … that Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism.”

The New York Times’ lead news stories in the aftermath of the Mumbai massacre played right into the Organization of Islamic Conference’s campaign of obfuscation. It omitted the central fact that the terrorists who murdered more than 170 innocent people were fanatical Islamists. The Times referred to them simply in generic terms as “gunmen”, “attackers”, and “militants”.

The only hint of a Muslim connection to the terrorist acts reported in the New York Times’ lead article on November 28, 2008 was the recounting of a complaint from two of the attackers to local television stations about the treatment of Muslims in India and about hostilities in the disputed territory of Kashmir. The Times actually quoted one of these cold-hearted terrorists, who tried to play victim in justifying the carnage.

Islamic terrorists always have some kind of excuse for their wanton killings. Usually it starts with the Jews, whom the religious fanatics believe are responsible for every ill befalling Muslims everywhere and thus deserve to die. It was no surprise that a Jewish center in Mumbai was among the prime terrorist targets, with deadly consequences to a rabbi, his wife and other Jews.

Westerners also must be punished for keeping the Muslim people down, so the Islamists’ rationalization for murder goes. American and British citizens in particular were targeted at hotels and other locations in Mumbai where they were likely to congregate. However, the slaughter soon became indiscriminate. In fact, most of the dead appeared to be Indians and tourists of other nationalities caught in the midst of the terrorists’ mayhem. Indian commandos involved in an operation to end the siege described the terrorists as "showing no remorse, firing at anyone who moves". >>> By Joseph Klein | December 1, 2008

Mumbai Attacks: Blasts Heard across Indian City as Hostages Freed

THE TELEGRAPH: Blasts were heard across southern Mumbai on Thursday as Indian commandos prepared to storm the Trident-Oberoi hotel to rescue the last foreign hostages seized by Islamist militants in a series of attacks the night before.

Standoffs continued between the Indian police in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) and heavily armed militants who a day earlier carried out seven coordinated attacks across the city that killed more than 100 people.

Witnesses in the Indian financial capital said a fresh round of firing was heard as commandos prepared to storm the Trident-Oberoi, a luxury hotel where as many as 200 people are believed to be trapped.

Police earlier said all of the foreign hostages had been freed from another five-star hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, but AN Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said as many as 100 guests remained trapped inside their rooms.

Witnesses also reported continuing explosions and gunfire at the landmark hotel as a trickle of bodies and hostages were seen emerging from the building.

Eighteen hours after the attacks began, commandos had also gathered outside the Mumbai headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, where a rabbi is thought to have been taken hostage. >>> By Damien McElroy and Rahul Bedi in Bombay | November 27, 2008

THE TELEGRAPH: Mumbai Attacks: Six Foreigners Including British National Killed, Hundreds Injured

Six foreign nationals, including a Briton, have been confirmed among more than 100 dead following terrorist attacks in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) in India.

Hundreds more have been injured, including seven British nationals, after teams of terrorists stormed hotels, cafes and tourist attractions in a series of coordinated attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai.

Hundreds of tourists were held hostage in two luxury hotels in the city. Local reports said among the dead foreigners were a British national, a 41-year-old Japanese man and a 49-year-old Australian.

Among the wounded are travellers from Australia, the United States, Spain, Norway, Canada and Singapore. Seven British citizens have been injured.

Sir Richard Stagg, the British High Commissioner in India, told the BBC: "We have visited most of the central hospitals where those injured have been taken and have met seven British victims who are in hospital at the moment and we understand there is likely to be some other injured of British nationality."

The death toll from the attacks stands at 101.

THE TELEGRAPH: Mumbai Attacks: The World Can't Ignore India's Islamist Terrorists Any Longer

India has suffered a gathering wave of Islamist terror attacks over the last five years, but it wasn't until yesterday afternoon that the terrorists really made the outside world sit up and take notice.

By targeting one of India's most iconic hotels, The Taj Mahal Palace on Mumbai's waterfront and holding hundreds of its wealthy foreign guests hostage, the Islamists have touched an international nerve at a delicate moment in the story of India's resurgence.

Despite the spate of attacks in recent years, including the 2006 train bombings in Mumbai that killed 180 people and bomb attacks this year in commercially sensitive locations of Bangalore and New Delhi, India has managed to retain its international image as a 'safe' place to visit and invest.

That all changed yesterday as the international news networks were filled with the voices of terrified Americans and Europeans, some of them on their mobile phones direct from the Taj Mahal Hotel, even as the bombs exploded nearby.

Such images will cause damage to India's status as an international investment destination at time when the economy is already suffering serious fallout from the global credit crunch.

Foreign capital, highly instrumental in India's economic resurgence, is fleeing India's economy at an alarming rate (more than £10bn this year), driving up the cost of borrowing and curbing the investment on which India's 'economic miracle' depends. >>> By Peter Foster | November 27, 2008
