China Suspends Ministerial Meetings with Britain over Dalai Lama Row
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: China has indefinitely suspended minister-level meetings with Britain in protest at David Cameron's decision to meet the Dalai Lama.

Two government ministers have been snubbed on their trips to Beijing in the last month. Lord Green, the Trade and Investment minister, and Jeremy Browne, the Foreign Office minister, saw planned meetings with Chinese ministers either cancelled or palmed off on junior officials.

Lord Green, who was visiting China as the head of a trade mission, was reportedly unable to meet with the Ministry of Commerce or with the powerful National Development and Reform Commission, which sets a course for the country's economy.

"What has happened is that things that are normally handled at ministerial level being downgraded or cancelled," said one diplomatic source.

TIMES ONLINE: President Obama told the Dalai Lama of his “strong support" for preservation of Tibet’s identity today and encouraged talks between the exiled leader and China.

After private White House talks between the pair, spokesman Robert Gibbs said the President had stated support for “the preservation of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural and linguistic identity and the protection of human rights for Tibetans" in China.

“The President commended the Dalai Lama’s ’Middle Way’ approach, his commitment to nonviolence and his pursuit of dialogue with the Chinese government,” Mr Gibbs added.

NZZ ONLINE: Der amerikanische Präsident Barack Obama will trotz der Warnungen aus Peking den Dalai Lama treffen. Das teilte ein Sprecher des Weissen Hauses am Dienstag mit, ohne einen Termin für ein Treffen Obamas mit dem geistlichen Oberhaupt der Tibeter zu nennen.

«Der Präsident hat der chinesischen Führung während seiner Reise im vergangenen Jahr gesagt, dass er den Dalai Lama treffen werde», sagte der Sprecher weiter. «Um es klar zu sagen, die USA betrachten Tibet als einen Teil von China.» Die amerikanische Regierung sei jedoch über die Menschenrechte und die Art und Weise, wie die Tibeter behandelt würden, beunruhigt. Die USA forderten die chinesische Führung auf, die einzigartigen kulturellen und religiösen Traditionen zu schützen.

China Threatens Obama Over Dalai Lama Meeting
TIMES ONLINE: Strained ties between the US and China could deteriorate further if President Obama goes ahead with a meeting with the Dalai Lama, Beijing warned today.

China’s anger at the Tibetan spiritual leader's overseas visits and the warm reception he is afforded by foreign leaders spilled over in tough words from officials in Beijing who led the latest round of talks with his representatives last week.

Zhu Weiqun, executive deputy head of the Communist Party’s United Front Work Department, who is in charge of the talks, said that a meeting between Mr Obama and the Dalai Lama would “seriously undermine the political foundation of Sino-US relations”.

An increasingly assertive Beijing even issued a veiled threat that such a meeting would not only fail to serve the interests of diplomacy but could damage the US economic recovery. A view has become widespread that the strength of the economic revival in China, the largest holder of US treasuries, could help to lead the world out of the current downturn.

TIMES ONLINE: President Obama was accused of bowing to Chinese pressure and snubbing the Dalai Lama as he prepares for a Sino-US summit in Beijing next month.

Tibet’s spiritual leader arrived in Washington yesterday on his first visit since Mr Obama’s inauguration. For the first time since 1991 he will not be received at the White House. The Dalai Lama will eventually meet Mr Obama, but not until the US President returns from the Beijing meeting.

American officials have insisted that the delayed encounter is part of a broad new strategy to win Chinese co-operation on a range of issues including North Korea, Iran, Taiwan — and Tibet. But the break with a nearly 20-year tradition of White House “drop-ins” by the Dalai Lama follows a declaration by Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, that human rights alone cannot be allowed to determine the US-Chinese relationship.

A leading Republican campaigner on human rights called Mr Obama’s failure to welcome the Dalai Lama “just terrible”. Frank Wolf, a congressman, veteran advocate for Tibet and friend of the Dalai Lama, told The Times: “This is a retreat by the Obama Administration on human rights and religious freedom.

“Dissidents in Lhasa will know exactly what it means. Guards will come by their cells and laugh at them. THE BOSTON GLOBE: This is a scene that immediately captured my imagination: Last week, in the preacher's room at Memorial Church in Cambridge, the Dalai Lama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his advocacy of nonviolence, turned to one of Harvard's leading scholars of Islam and asked him about the meaning of jihad.

The 73-year-old Dalai Lama had been to Harvard multiple times, and on a couple of occasions had met William A. Graham, a noted Koranic scholar who for the last several years has been the dean of Harvard Divinity School. The Dalai Lama, preparing to give his speech about the teaching of compassion, was apparently thinking about the role of a divinity school at an institution like Harvard when he turned to Graham and asked him about Islam.

"We were simply talking about the virtues of doing comparative religion studies, which he believes in, and he said so many things are misunderstood, like jihad," Graham told me a few days later by phone. "He said he was thinking about the differences between greater and lesser jihad in Muslim jurisprudence. He had a few things to say about it - I didn't get much of a chance to respond to anything - but he's quite correct that the word 'jihad' has been misused. Dalai Lama Warns Tibetans Are 'Near Extinction' at 50th Anniversary of Exile
THE TELEGRAPH: The Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, has marked 50 years of his flight from China and exile in India with a defiant speech praising the sacrifices of those killed during last year's uprising, but warning that Tibetan identity was "nearing extinction."

Despite 50 years of international campaigning and fruitless negotiations with Chinese leaders, Tibetans were still treated like criminals in their own country, he said.

"These 50 years have brought untold suffering and destruction to the land and people of Tibet. Even today, Tibetans in Tibet live in constant fear and the Chinese authorities remain constantly suspicious of them," he told followers in Dharamsala, the Indian home of his government in exile.

Les Tibétains en exil ont marqué mardi le 50e anniversaire du soulèvement réprimé par la Chine et de l'exil du dalaï lama. A cette occasion, leur chef spirituel a accusé Pékin d'avoir fait de la province un «enfer» et tué «des centaines de milliers» de ses compatriotes.

Depuis son lieu d'exil de Dharamsala, dans le nord de l'Inde, le dalaï lama a aussi réitéré sa revendication d'une «autonomie significative» pour son pays natal.

«Ces 50 dernières années ont été celles de la souffrance et des destructions pour le territoire et le peuple du Tibet», a dit le lauréat 1989 du prix Nobel de la paix, dans un discours prononcé devant son temple accroché aux contreforts de l'Himalaya.

Peking - Unter massiven Sicherheitsvorkehrungen haben die Tibeter ihres Volksaufstandes gegen die Chinesen vom 10. März 1959 gedacht. Das Hochland war praktisch abgeriegelt. Der tibetische Regierungschef Qiangba Puncog beschrieb die Lage in Lhasa als «stabil».

Die Truppen befänden sich in normaler Bereitschaft, sagte der Regierungschef laut amtlicher Nachrichtenagentur Xinhua am Rande der Jahrestagung des Volkskongresses in Peking.

Aus Angst vor einem Wiederaufflammen der Proteste wie vor einem Jahr hatte China die Militärpräsenz massiv verstärkt. Es drangen keine unabhängigen Informationen nach außen. Telefonkontakte zu großen tibetischen Klöstern in Tibet und den angrenzenden Provinzen Qinghai, Gansu und Sichuan seien unterbrochen, berichtete das Zentrum für Demokratie und Menschenrechte aus Hongkong. NZZ Online: Trotz vehementer Kritik aus Peking hat der französische Präsident Nicolas Sarkozy am Samstag den Dalai Lama getroffen. Der amtierende EU-Ratsvorsitzende und das geistige Oberhaupt der Tibeter trafen sich in Danzig hinter verschlossenen Türen für ein halbstündiges Gespräch.

(ap) China hatte gegen das Treffen heftig protestiert und einen in Frankreich geplanten EU-China-Gipfel kurzfristig abgesagt. Zudem drohte Peking mit einer nachhaltigen Verschlechterung der bilateralen Beziehungen. Bilder des französischen Fernsehens zeigten, wie sich beide freundlich begrüssten und der Dalai Lama Sarkozy als Willkommensgeste buddhistischer Tradition folgend einen weissen Schal um den Hals legte. Sarkozy flog nach dem Treffen direkt zurück nach Paris und auch der Dalai Lama sprach nicht zu Journalisten. THE TELEGRAPH: Sexual intercourse provides but fleeting satisfaction, while chastity offers a better life and "more freedom", the Dalai Lama has said.

Conjugal life causes too many "ups and downs", the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters in a Lagos hotel.

"Sexual pressure, sexual desire, actually, I think is short-period satisfaction and, often, that leads to more complication," he said.

"Naturally as a human being...some kind of desire for sex comes, but then you use human intelligence to make comprehension that those relationships are always full of trouble."

Problems arising from conjugal life could even lead to suicide or murder, the Dalai Lama warned.

Der alte Mönch in der dunkelroten Kutte hält die Hitzköpfe zurück. Noch. Ohne den Dalai Lama und seinen unerschütterlichen Glauben an eine gewaltfreie Lösung wären die Tibeter womöglich längst zu einer zweiten Palästinenserbewegung oder IRA geworden. Sie hätten ihre verlorene Heimat vielleicht mit Bomben und Terror von den chinesischen Besatzern zurückgefordert. Doch ihr geistiges Oberhaupt hält sie an der Leine und beharrt seit fast 50 Jahren auf dem „mittleren Weg“: Kompromisse, friedlicher Dialog und stoisch sanftes Lächeln. Jetzt aber scheint der Friedensnobelpreisträger mit seinem Latein am Ende. „Mein Vertrauen in die chinesische Regierung schwindet“, hatte er kürzlich resigniert erklärt und offen wie nie zuvor ein mögliches Scheitern seiner Bemühungen zugegeben.

Jetzt sollen Jüngere entscheiden, wie es weitergehen kann. Der Dalai Lama rief im nordindischen Dharamsala zu einer Krisensitzung über den künftigen Kurs der Tibeter gegenüber China – die erste ihrer Art, seit die tibetische Regierung vor fast fünf Jahrzehnten über den Himalaja in die Freiheit floh.

China Condemns Dalai Lama Ahead of Planned Talks
REUTERS: BEIJING - Beijing lambasted the Dalai Lama as a criminal on Saturday as representatives of the exiled Buddhist leader headed for a meeting in southern China on the most serious unrest in Tibet for nearly two decades.

The barrage of criticism suggested the government was in no mood to compromise following riots and protests in Tibet, which have shaken China's preparations for the Beijing Olympics and stoked Western criticism of its rule in the mountain region.

"Patriotic people of Tibet strongly condemn and vehemently denounce the litany of crimes committed by the 14th Dalai Lama and his followers," said the official Tibet Daily, according to the region's official news Website (www.chinatibetnews.com).

NZZ Online: Präsident Sarkozy hat die Entscheidung über seine Teilnahme an der Eröffnungszeremonie der Olympischen Spiele in Peking von der Wiederaufnahme des Dialoges zwischen China und dem Dalai Lama abhängig gemacht. In einer Stellungnahme am Tag nach dem Fiasko der Olympia-Fackel-Stafette in Paris bedauerte der Staatschef das «für jeden etwas traurige Schauspiel» der Zwischenfälle. Zugleich bekundete er indes auch sein Verständnis für die Solidaritätskundgebungen zugunsten Tibets und des Dalai Lama. Die meisten Manifestanten hätten übrigens von ihrem in einer Demokratie selbstverständlichen Demonstrationsrecht in völlig korrekter Weise Gebrauch gemacht. Dass das olympische Feuer und einige der als Stafettenläufer mitwirkenden Sportler ausgepfiffen worden seien, bleibe indes zu bedauern.
