No Veil or No Service from Public Institutions, New Bill Urges Quebeckers

THE GLOBE AND MAIL – Quebec City: Unprecedented legislation requires Muslim women to show their faces in all government locations

Quebec has tabled unprecedented legislation requiring Muslim women to show their faces in all government locations, including schools, hospitals and daycares.

The controversial move by the Charest government - which has said it is committed to secularism and gender equality - marks the first time it has chosen to craft laws to accommodate minorities.

The legislation means the niqab, a full veil covering worn by some Muslim women, will essentially be barred from all government bodies, whether the woman is working for the government or receiving services.

However, public servants can continue to wear religious symbols like a cross or Star of David or even the partial veil known as the hijab worn by Muslim women - just so long as a person's face is in full view.

The bill tabled yesterday in the province's National Assembly said that face coverings of any kind won't be allowed because they disrupt personal interactions, and makes it hard to identify and communicate with people.

"Here in Quebec we receive and we give services with our face uncovered. That's an affirmation that is novel. We believe firmly that we are within the limits of the Charter of Rights," said Justice Minister Kathleen Weil.

"It's a strong, forceful piece of legislation and it's partly because it's so simple." >>> With reports from the Canadian Press and Sarah Boesveld | Thursday, March 25, 2010

A Quarter of Republicans Think Barack Hussein Obama Is the Antichrist

MAIL ONLINE: Americans who suggest Barack Obama should rot in hell are apparently deadly serious.

Nearly a quarter of Republicans believe the Democrat president 'may be the Antichrist', according to a survey.

An even greater number compared him to Hitler.

Mr Obama was jubilant this week after securing his £626billion healthcare reform plan.

But his triumph seems only to have inflamed his critics among the evangelical Christians from America's heartland who kept George Bush in power for eight years and have demonised his successor.

More than half of the Republicans quizzed by Harris Poll, 57 per cent, believed the president was secretly Muslim, something he has consistently denied.

And 67 per cent of Republicans who responded believed Obama was a socialist, despite his central leanings.

The startling results came as lawyers representing 14 U.S. states filed lawsuits yesterday challenging an overhaul of the country's $2.5trillion healthcare system, minutes after President Barack Obama signed the landmark legislation.

One joint lawsuit by a dozen Republican attorneys general and a Democrat claims the sweeping reforms violate state-government rights in the U.S. Constitution and will force massive new spending on hard-pressed state governments. Kentucky Fried Chicken Goes Halal

MAIL ONLINE: A diner was left fuming after a KFC restaurant took his favourite meal off the menu because it breached their new halal regulations.

Alan Phillips was told he would have to travel five miles to another branch if he wanted the Big Daddy, a chicken burger, topped with bacon, cheese and salad.

The branch, in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, is one of 86 KFC restaurants which is running trials of a scheme where they sell nothing other than halal meat.

The company has taken the burger off the menu because Islamic dietary law forbids Muslims to eat anything which has been prepared on the same premises as pork, which is itself strictly forbidden.

It said it was responding to 'increased demand' for a halal menu in the areas of Britain with growing Muslim populations. KFC diner told 'you can't have bacon in your burger here - we're now halal' >>> Katherine Faulkner | Thursday, March 25, 2010
Ridiculous*! California to Hold Statewide November Vote on Legalising Marijuana

TIMES ONLINE: To get high or to not get high — that will be the question on the ballot in California’s November elections.
As the Golden State’s hippies reach retirement age, pro-marijuana advocates have joined forces in an effort finally to force a state-wide vote on making weed legal, and not just for medical purposes.

Under the proposed law smoking marijuana to get high would be as acceptable as drinking beer to get drunk as long as users were aged 21 or older. It would also become legal to grow up to 25 sq ft (2.3sq m) of the plants per residence, and for local governments to authorise and tax the transportation and sale of the drug.

If the ten-page initiative is passed it could set in motion a chain of events throughout the US that could bring an end to the era of marijuana prohibition. Or at least that is what marijuana advocates hope. >>> Chris Ayres, Los Angeles | Thursday, March 25, 2010

Obama on a Roll: First Obamacare, Now Nuclear Deal with Russia

TIMES ONLINE: The US and Russia are on the verge of clinching a key nuclear arms treaty after President Obama signalled that his Administration was refocusing on foreign policy in the aftermath of the bruising healthcare battle.

A Kremlin official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said last night that the two sides had agreed on “all documents” for a new deal to slash their nuclear arsenals, replacing the landmark 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (Start). The Czech Republic also announced that a date had been set for Mr Obama and President Medvedev to meet in Prague and sign the treaty, raising hopes of an accord at Easter. Sexual Revolution as Indian Supreme Court Sanctions Co-habitation

TIMES ONLINE: India’s Supreme Court ruled yesterday that unmarried couples have the right to live together after hearing a case involving a Tamil actress accused of corrupting young minds by promoting premarital sex.

The judges pointed out that even the Hindu gods, Lord Krishna and Radha, were co-habiting lovers rather than man and wife. “When two adult people want to live together, what is the offence?” they said. “Living together is not an offence. Living together is a right to life.”

The ruling marks a legal milestone in India’s sexual revolution as younger members of the urban professional classes slowly but steadily break down traditional taboos.

It is unlikely, however, to change habits among most Indians, who rarely indulge in premarital sex, let alone cohabit with lovers, and usually have their spouses chosen by their parents. >>> Jeremy Page, Delhi | Thursday, March 25, 2010
Death Threats Plague Democrats Who Supported Barack Obama's Health Care Bill

THE TELEGRAPH: Democrats who supported sweeping changes to America's health care system have been subjected to death threats and vandalism as the tide of anger and outrage over the bill grows.

The FBI has been called in to investigate after bricks were thrown through Democrats' windows and menacing phone messages were left for politicians who supported the bill.

Four Democratic offices across the country have been targeted and [at] least 10 members of Congress have reported some sort of threat. No arrests have so far been made.

The brick flung through the window of a county Democratic Party office in Rochester, New York, over the weekend had a note attached: "Extremism in defence of liberty is no vice," roughly quoting 1964 Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater.

Some of the anger over the bill spilled over in a flood of obscenity and threat-filled phone and fax messages to the office of Rep. Bart Stupak. His office released some of the messages it has received since the health care bill passed.

"I hope you bleed ... (get) cancer and die," one male caller told the congressman.

A fax with the title "Defecating on Stupak" carried a picture of a gallows with "Bart (SS) Stupak" on it and a noose attached. It was captioned, "All Baby Killers come to unseemly ends Either by the hand of man or by the hand of God." >>> | Thursday, March 25, 2010

Historic US Health Bill Sent Back to House of Representatives

The decision came as the US Senate met in a middle-of-the-night session to try to finish the bill. Photo: Times Online

TIMES ONLINE: Barack Obama's historic US healthcare legislation is to be returned to the House of Representatives for a new vote because of a procedural "violation", only a day after it was signed into law.

Two Republican challenges on points of order under budget reconciliation rules have been upheld, forcing another vote by the House just days after it passed the package on Sunday.

The points of order involved the revamp of the student loan programme included in the package, a spokesman for Harry Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, said.

Under the reconciliation rules, each provision in the package must have a budgetary impact.

The decision came as the US Senate met in a middle-of-the-night session to try to finalise details of the Bill, which was signed into law by President Obama on Tuesday.

The decision is a major blow for the Democrats and could set up another politically difficult vote in the House, which narrowly passed the $940 billion (£630 billion) overhaul to cap a year-long political struggle. >>> Times Online | Thursday, March 25, 2010

Israel 'Spits in Obama's Eye' by Announcing New Settlements in East Jerusalem

THE TELEGRAPH: Israel was accused of "spitting in Obama's eye" after it announced plans to build 100 more settler homes in east Jerusalem just hours after Israel's prime minister met the US president at the White House.

Municipal officials approved the Jewish housing project in one of Jerusalem's most volatile Palestinian suburbs just hours before Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, met Mr Obama for emergency talks.

US officials had hoped that a meeting between the two leaders could defuse tensions triggered when Israel announced plans to build 1,600 new homes in east Jerusalem's Ramat Shlomo settlement during a visit earlier this month by Joe Biden, the US vice-president.

But in the days leading up to the meeting, Mr Netanyahu defiantly rejected US demands to reverse the expansion of Ramat Shlomo and halt all building in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day war.

That Israel then approved a new building project, the suspension of which the United States had demanded as long ago as last July, can only have infuriated Mr Obama.

The meeting at the White House was the iciest between an American president and an Israeli premier in recent years. Mr Netanyahu was treated to a series of small but calculated diplomatic slights that left him in no doubt of the White House's displeasure.

There were no photographs before or after the meeting, no questions from reporters and no press briefing or "readout" afterwards.

The “honest and straightforward discussion” ended with areas of “disagreement”, according to Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman, who added that US officials were seeking “clarification” of Israel’s plan for a further expansion of Jewish housing.

But an Israeli government spokesman sought to put a brave face on the encounter, saying: “the atmosphere was good”.

But the evidence suggested it was anything but. The meeting itself was in two parts: an initial 89-minute session followed by a further 35 minutes at Mr Netanyahu's request, after he had consulted his officials. >>> Adrian Blomfield in Jerusalem and Toby Harnden in Washington | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Silence That Speaks Volumes: Blackout as Israel’s Leader Leaves White House

TIMES ONLINE: Two separate meetings between President Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, failed today to produce so much as an official photograph as a deep chill settled over US-Israeli relations and secrecy shrouded any efforts to repair them.

The Israeli Prime Minister was due to fly home from Washington after three days marked by fierce Israeli defiance on the issue of settlements and an extraordinary silence maintained by both sides after his three-and-a-half hour visit to the White House.

The meeting was overshadowed by Israeli approval for 20 new apartments being built for Jews in Arab east Jerusalem — a move denounced by one senior US official as “exactly what we expect Prime Minister Netanyahu to get control of”.

White House staff denied Mr Netanyahu the usual photo opportunities afforded a visiting leader, issued only the vaguest summary of their talks — let alone a joint statement — and reversed a decision to release an official photo of their meetings. >>> Giles Whittell, Washington | Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Organizers, Not University Cancelled Ann Coulter: University of Ottawa

THE VANCOUVER SUN: OTTAWA - In a brief statement Wednesday University of Ottawa President Allan Rock defended his institution and said that free expression is a core value of the school that bills itself as Canada's university.

"Freedom of expression is a core value that the University of Ottawa has always promoted. We have a long history of hosting contentious and controversial speakers on our campus. Last night was no exception, as people gathered here to listen to and debate Ann Coulter's opinions."

Rock's statement said organizers of the speech themselves decided at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday to cancel the event and informed the university's security services on site of their decision.

The statement said a crowd of about 1,000 people had "peacefully gathered at Marion Hall."

"I encourage our students faculty and other members of our community to maintain our university as an open forum for diverse opinions. Ours is a safe and democratic environment for the expression of views, and we will keep it that way," Rock, who is a former federal minister of Justice in the Jean Chrétien cabinet, said in the statement.

The university indicated it will make no further comment on the matter.

Ottawa police were also issuing statements about the Ann Coulter affair Wednesday

Ottawa police spokesperson Alain Boucher said the police did not shut down the event, but said a different venue was needed to hold the crowd of around 1,500 people.

"We strongly suggested that this venue was not large enough to accommodate all the people that had attended," he said. "We had safety concerns with the sheer number of people that were there...with different views on issues." >>> Matthew Pearson, The Ottawa Citizen | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

OTTAWA — After protesters at the University of Ottawa prevented Ann Coulter from giving a speech Tuesday night, the American conservative writer said it proved the point she came to make — free speech in Canada leaves much to be desired.

Then she said what she really thought of the student protesters who surrounded Marion Hall, making it to[o] unsafe, in the view of her bodyguard, for the pundit to attempt entry.

“The University of Ottawa is really easy to get into, isn’t it?” she said in an interview after the cancelled event. “I never get any trouble at the Ivy League schools. It’s always the bush-league schools.”

Coulter said she has been speaking regularly at university campuses for a decade. While she has certainly been heckled, she said this is the first time an engagement has been cancelled because of protesters.

“This has never, ever, ever happened before — even at the stupidest American university,” she said.

Coulter remarked on the reception she has had since entering the country.

“Since I’ve arrived in Canada, I’ve been denounced on the floor of Parliament — which, by the way, is on my bucket list — my posters have been banned, I’ve been accused of committing a crime in a speech that I have not yet given, I was banned by the student council, so welcome to Canada!” >>> Zev Singer and Kristy Nease, Ottawa Citizen | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

A Fifth of European Union Will Be Muslim by 2050

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain, Spain and Holland will have an even higher proportion of Muslims in a shorter amount of time, an investigation by The Telegraph shows.

On a hope and a prayer: lack of debate over influx of Muslims, some experts claim . Photograph: The Telegraph

Last year, five per cent of the total population of the 27 EU countries was Muslim. But rising levels of immigration from Muslim countries and low birth rates among Europe's indigenous population mean that, by 2050, the figure will be 20 per cent, according to forecasts.

Data gathered from various sources indicate that Britain, Spain and Holland will have an even higher proportion of Muslims in a shorter amount of time.

The UK, which currently has 20 million fewer people than Germany, is also projected to be the EU's most populous country by 2060, with 77 million people.

The findings have led to allegations that policy-makers are failing to confront the widespread challenges of the "demographic time bomb". >>> Adrian Michaels | Saturday, August 08, 2010
Ann Coulter Prepares Human-rights Complaint

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Right-wing firebrand Ann Coulter, who cancelled her speech to the University of Ottawa Tuesday night over fears for her safety, says she’s the victim of a hate crime under Canadian laws.

She said she’s hired Canadian conservative activist Ezra Levant to prepare a human-rights complaint that will test how equitably these hate-crime laws are applied.

In an interview with The Globe, Ms. Coulter suggested the University of Ottawa’s provost, Francois Houle, is partly responsible for the angry crowds that opposed her speaking Tuesday night. He is the official who warned her in advance to watch what she said lest she incur criminal charges for hate speech.

The tribunal should take her complaint seriously, she said, “because either Francois [Houle] has created a climate of hate against me based on my membership in an identifiable group – or the whole human rights commission is complete horseshit.” >>> Steven Chase | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Katolische Kirche: Der Vatikan braucht eine neue Inquisition

WELT ONLINE: Eins vorweg: Scheiterhaufen will keiner.

>>> Reuters/dpa/fas | Mittwoch, 24. März 2010

Leading Doctors Call for Ban on Smoking in Cars

TIMES ONLINE: Twenty of Britain’s most senior doctors call today for a ban on smoking in cars as part of a sweeping expansion of laws to protect children against the effects of inhaling smoke.

Writing in a letter to The Times, the doctors argue for more anti-smoking legislation to address the serious health problems caused by passive smoking.

The signatories, including 13 presidents of medical royal colleges, urge the Government to bring in laws prohibiting all smoking in vehicles and in public places visited by young people such as parks and playgrounds.

The letter recommends a comprehensive strategy to cut adult smoking and children’s smoke exposure outside and inside the home. About two million children are exposed to cigarette smoke at home, with a child twice as likely to take up the habit if a close family member smokes.

The doctors say that the national strategy must include tobacco price rises, media campaigns, more effective health warnings and better provision of smoking cessation services. Read on and comment >>> Sam Lister, Health Editor | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Ban Smoking in Cars to Save Young Lives

TIMES ONLINE: Smoke-free legislation needs to be extended to include public places visited by children and young people, including cars

Sir, A new report launched today by the Royal College of Physicians, Passive Smoking and Children, confirms that passive smoking is a leading cause of death and disease in children. About two million children are currently exposed to cigarette smoke at home, and many more outside the home. In addition to the serious health risks of passive smoking, however, the report also points out the additional health risk to children posed by family smoking, which makes children about twice as likely to become smokers themselves.

These health hazards to children can be avoided entirely by acting to reduce the number of adults who smoke, particularly parents and care-givers, and to reduce still further the exposure of children to smoke and smoking, both in and outside the home. This will require a comprehensive strategy including tobacco price rises, mass media campaigns, more effective health warnings, prohibition of point of sale display, generic packaging and better provision of smoking cessation services.

Smoke-free legislation also needs to be extended much more widely, to include public places visited by children and young people, and including prohibition of all smoking in cars and other vehicles. The Chief Medical Officer, in his foreword to the report, says that we must keep up the momentum to continue to reduce the harm of tobacco use in our communities, and create a truly smoke-free future. As doctors, we agree, and call on governments to take the necessary actions to protect our children’s future. Read on and comment >>> | Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Excellent readers' comments:

@ Toby Donovan, "There is something deeply sinister in this inexorable extension of state powers. I left the country years ago and I'm glad I did - the UK is becoming the pettiest, creepiest sort of police state."

Yes, a sinister and creepy police state. I wish I had decided to retire to France when, after many years living in sane third world countries, I returned instead to the UK. I'm too old to leave again now. I made a bad mistake coming home to a country where a sinister, authoritarian regime employs officious jobsworths with no public mandate, to cast about constantly for ways of imposing their faddish obsessions upon the rest of us.

I smoke. But I am a gentleman, and I have never smoked and do not smoke close to children. This is called commonsense, and good manners, that condition of socialisation which is rare indeed in Britain, but ought not to be legislated upon us. I never gave these doctors ("leading doctors"? Are the rest just second-rate?) any mandate to abrogate my right to exercise good manners and common sense, but these sort of people and the Regime which backs them, seek constantly to deprive me of my right to exercise a gentleman's attributes of my own volition, for they would legislate away all choice and in so doing, place me at the same level as the most stupidly antisocial yob with several ASBOs to his name.

>>> AFP | Mercredi 24 Mars 2010
Female Poet Uses 'Arabic Idol' to Attack Muslim Clerics

THE TELEGRAPH: A veiled female poet has used verse to lash out at hard-line Muslim clerics on live television during the popular Arabic version of "American Idol."

In The Million's Poet programme, competitors battle it out to impress a panel of judges with traditional Arabic poems, not pop songs.

But instead of choosing an ode to the beauty of Bedouin life, Hissa Hilal, only her eyes visible through her black veil, delivered a blistering attack on Muslim preachers "who sit in the position of power" but are "frightening" people with their fatwas, or religious edicts, and "preying like a wolf" on those seeking peace.

The programme, The Million's Poet, is a chance for poets to show off their original work, airing live weekly on satellite television across the Arab world from Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. Contestants are graded on voice and style of recitation, but also on their subject matter, said Sultan al-Amimi, one of the three judges on the show and a manager of Abu Dhabi's Poetry Academy.

Her poem got loud cheers from the audience and won her a place in the competition's finals, to be aired today. While she is a favourite to win the show, her poetry has also brought her death threats, posted on several Islamic militant websites.

But she has shrugged off the controversy. >>> | Wednesday, March 24, 2010
US Health Care: 14 States File Lawsuits Over Barack Obama's Reforms

THE TELEGRAPH: In a sign of political battles to come, 14 US states filed lawsuits on Tuesday challenging the constitutionality of health care reform just moments after President Barack Obama signed it into law.

Other states are expected to join the fight against the far-reaching reforms which could place huge burdens on state budgets. Many are also considering legislation to block a provision which requires most people to buy insurance or pay a fine.

"This lawsuit should put the federal government on notice that Florida will not permit the constitutional rights of our citizens and the sovereignty of our state to be ignored or disregarded," said Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum.

Mr McCollum, a Republican who is running for state governor in the upcoming election, said the federal government had no right to impose a "tax on living" by forcing people to buy insurance.

The historic $940-billion overhaul will extend coverage to some 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured, ensuring 95 per cent of US citizens under age 65 will have health insurance.

The lawsuit filed in a Florida federal court calls the reform bill an "unprecedented encroachment" on state sovereignty by requiring states to spend billions on expanding health care coverage to the poor. >>> | Tuesday, March 23, 2010
In Health Care Bill, Obama Attacks Wealth Inequality

THE NEW YORK TIMES: For all the political and economic uncertainties about health reform, at least one thing seems clear: The bill that President Obama signed on Tuesday is the federal government’s biggest attack on economic inequality since inequality began rising more than three decades ago.

Over most of that period, government policy and market forces have been moving in the same direction, both increasing inequality. The pretax incomes of the wealthy have soared since the late 1970s, while their tax rates have fallen more than rates for the middle class and poor.

Nearly every major aspect of the health bill pushes in the other direction. This fact helps explain why Mr. Obama was willing to spend so much political capital on the issue, even though it did not appear to be his top priority as a presidential candidate. Beyond the health reform’s effect on the medical system, it is the centerpiece of his deliberate effort to end what historians have called the age of Reagan. >>> David Leonhardt | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Obama Signs Healthcare Bill as Republicans Begin Legal Fight for Repeal

TIMES ONLINE: The US health reform Bill was signed into law by President Obama today in a momentous - and momentarily profane - White House ceremony.

Using a rack of 22 pens that will each become cherished souvenirs, Mr Obama signed a measure that ends America’s longstanding distinction as the only advanced economy to lack basic healthcare coverage for all.

The legislation brings into effect immediate changes to the rules governing American health insurers, but also injected new urgency into Republican efforts to repeal the Bill or defeat it in the country’s courts.

The President welcomed “a new season in America” after “a century of trying and a year of debate” – and said he looked forward to a political season when the heated rhetoric of that debate would “confront the reality of reform”.

Moments earlier, after Joe Biden, the Vice President, introduced Mr Obama in the East Room of the White House, he leaned in to give his boss a hug and was caught by a microphone saying in the President's ear: “This is a big f***ing deal”. >>> Giles Whittell, Washington | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Joe Biden Says Healthcare 'Is a Big F***ing Deal'

TIMES ONLINE: It was the memorable sound bite they did not dare script. The Vice President helped immortalise the official signing of healthcare legislation today with an earthy reminder of its historic importance.

“This is a big f***ing deal,” Joe Biden whispered into the President’s ear in the East Room of the White House where Barack Obama was about to sign the healthcare bill into law. The microphones and television cameras captured his words for posterity.

Mr Obama barely flinched as he stepped forward to address a crowd of congressmen and invited guests before adding his signature to the vital House Resolution 3590, which paves the way for near-universal health coverage in America. >>> Nico Hines | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

>>> sda | Dienstag, 23. Obama Signs Health-Care Reform Bill

Barack Obama Signs Health Care Bill in Victory Tainted by Sceptical Public

THE TELEGRAPH: A triumphant President Barack Obama signed an historic health care reform bill into law on Tuesday, declaring that it represented what "generations of Americans have fought for, and marched for, and hungered to see".

But even as he celebrated the end of 14-months of often bitter struggle, he was preparing to sell the scheme to a still-sceptical public.

The new law, which came after united opposition of Republicans on Capitol Hill as well as dozens of conservative Democrats, will extend health insurance to millions of uninsured.

"We have now just enshrined the core principle that everybody should have some basic security when it comes to their health," Mr Obama said at a signing ceremony in the East Room of the White House. >>> Toby Harnden in Washington | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Gay Soldiers Attack US General Who Claimed Homosexuals Were to Blame for Srebrenica

THE TELEGRAPH: Gay soldiers have threatened to take a US general to court over his claim that the presence of homosexual troops was responsible for the Dutch army's failure to prevent the Srebrenica massacre.

John Sheehan, a former US general and Nato commander, outraged the Netherlands last week when he alleged that openly gay Dutch soldiers had so damaged military morale that the country's army was powerless to prevent genocide in Bosnia.

Up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys were massacred by Bosnian Serb forces after Dutch UN peacekeepers failed to prevent the fall of the Srebrenica enclave in July, 1995, a legacy that has continued to haunts the Netherlands.

Peter Schouten, a Dutch activist, has founded the "Pink Army" to bring a class action lawsuit against General Sheehan in a Californian federal court.

With the support of the Dutch Homosexuality and Armed Forces Foundation, Mr Schouten is aiming to recruit seven homosexual Dutch soldiers to file slander and defamation charges against the general.

The litigants will demand a full-page retraction in US and Dutch newspapers, full legal costs and will ask US judges to send the retired general on compulsory "sensitivity training". >>> Bruno Waterfield | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Facebook Row as Middle East Officials Ban User 'Who Insulted Islam'

THE TELEGRAPH: A row has erupted in the Middle East after officials banned a Facebook user in Abu Dhabi for breaking the law after they “insulted” Islam by claiming to be Allah.

All internet providers in the United Arab Emirates have been ordered to block the unnamed user behind the site, after he alleged his claims were supported by verses of the Koran.

His actions sparked a wave a protest, with many calling on users to boycott the social networking site unless the site was removed.

After dozens of complaints about the Arabic-language site, titled “God and Prophets”, the country’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announced this week it would ban the user from holding an internet account.

But that decision was met with more protest from what some viewed as censorship of the internet.

The user claimed they were an atheist and believed in no God but him/herself, reports in the Middle East claimed.

They said that Muslim prophets would be able to connect with users through the site, which contained Koranic verses and also appeared to mock Islam, as well as answering their questions.

The site soon had more than 600,000 followers, with many critical of the site.

Mohammad Al Ganem, the authority’s General Manager, defended the authority’s decision to ban the site, saying it “insulted” Islam.

“TRA received numerous calls and complaints from internet users expressing their anger against unidentified people who created a site on Facebook that is offending to God, prophets, messengers, the Holy Koran and even to all God's books," he told Gulf News.

"The creator of this site which he named ‘God and Prophets' Site', attributes divinity to himself and spreads distorted writing pretending they are verses from the Koran.

“He also declared writing a new book falsifying himself as a god.”
He added: “He spreads talk that is insulting to the prophets and to their holy stature.

“This is considered to be a felony according to the federal law." >>> Andrew Hough | Friday, March 19, 2010

Harvard Prof. Niall Ferguson on Decline of America and Rise of a New Global Economic Order

Part 3:

Muslim Europe: The Demographic Time Bomb Transforming Our Continent

THE TELEGRAPH: The EU is facing an era of vast social change, reports Adrian Michaels, and few politicians are taking notice

Britain and the rest of the European Union are ignoring a demographic time bomb: a recent rush into the EU by migrants, including millions of Muslims, will change the continent beyond recognition over the next two decades, and almost no policy-makers are talking about it.

The numbers are startling. Only 3.2 per cent of Spain's population was foreign-born in 1998. In 2007 it was 13.4 per cent. Europe's Muslim population has more than doubled in the past 30 years and will have doubled again by 2015. In Brussels, the top seven baby boys' names recently were Mohamed, Adam, Rayan, Ayoub, Mehdi, Amine and Hamza.

Europe's low white birth rate, coupled with faster multiplying migrants, will change fundamentally what we take to mean by European culture and society. The altered population mix has far-reaching implications for education, housing, welfare, labour, the arts and everything in between. It could have a critical impact on foreign policy: a study was submitted to the US Air Force on how America's relationship with Europe might evolve. Yet EU officials admit that these issues are not receiving the attention they deserve.

Jerome Vignon, the director for employment and social affairs at the European Commission, said that the focus of those running the EU had been on asylum seekers and the control of migration rather than the integration of those already in the bloc. "It has certainly been underestimated - there is a general rhetoric that social integration of migrants should be given as much importance as monitoring the inflow of migrants." But, he said, the rhetoric had rarely led to policy.

The countries of the EU have long histories of welcoming migrants, but in recent years two significant trends have emerged. Migrants have come increasingly from outside developed economies, and they have come in accelerating numbers.

The growing Muslim population is of particular interest. This is not because Muslims are the only immigrants coming into the EU in large numbers; there are plenty of entrants from all points of the compass. But Muslims represent a particular set of issues beyond the fact that atrocities have been committed in the West in the name of Islam.

America's Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, part of the non-partisan Pew Research Center, said in a report: "These [EU] countries possess deep historical, cultural, religious and linguistic traditions. Injecting hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions, of people who look, speak and act differently into these settings often makes for a difficult social fit."

How dramatic are the population changes? Everyone is aware that certain neighbourhoods of certain cities in Europe are becoming more Muslim, and that the change is gathering pace. But raw details are hard to come by as the data is sensitive: many countries in the EU do not collect population statistics by religion. >>> Adrian Michaels | Saturday, August 08, 2009
Nuclear Terror Risk to Britain from Al-Qaeda

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain faces an increased threat of a nuclear attack by al-Qaeda terrorists following a rise in the trafficking of radiological material, a government report has warned.

Bomb makers who have been active in Afghanistan may already have the ability to produce a "dirty bomb" using knowledge acquired over the internet.

It is feared that terrorists could transport an improvised nuclear device up the Thames and detonate it in the heart of London. Bristol, Liverpool Newcastle, Glasgow and Belfast are also thought to be vulnerable.

Lord West, the Security Minister, also raised the possibility of terrorists using small craft to enter ports and launch an attack similar to that in Mumbai in 2008, when more than 150 people were killed.

The Government is so concerned about the threat that it is setting up a command centre to track suspicious boats.

The terrorism threat level was raised from "substantial" to "severe" in January after the failed attempt to blow up an aircraft over Detroit on Christmas Day.

Three separate reviews of the country's ability to prevent a major terrorist attack were published simultaneously yesterday, before an international meeting on nuclear security in Washington next month. >>> Duncan Gardham, Security Correspondent | Monday, March 22, 2010
Britain to Expel Israeli Diplomat Over ‘Mossad’ Assassination in Dubai

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain will expel an Israeli diplomat over the use of cloned British passports in the killing of a senior Hamas commander in Dubai.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband is due to address Parliament on Tuesday afternoon on the issue.

A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment ahead of the statement, says Britain will expel one Israeli diplomat.

Ron Proser, the Israeli Ambassador to London, was summoned to the Foreign Office on Monday to be told the results of an inquiry into the murder of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, whose body was discovered in a luxury Dubai hotel room on January 20.

Several members of the team suspected of killing him were found to be travelling on passports cloned from documents belonging to British citizens living in Israel. Other passports had been stolen from Irish, German, Australian and French citizens.

A senior Israeli diplomat would be expelled as a mark of the “anger” within the Government that British passport holders had been put at risk as a result of the operation.

A ministerial statement to be made to Parliament on Tuesday will formally name the Israeli security services as responsible for the cloning of up to 15 British passports, which were copied after being taken away by airport officials. >>> Rosa Prince, Political Correspondent | Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Anti-Semitism Creeps Back On To English Lawns

THE TELEGRAPH: Charles Moore reviews 'Trials of the Diaspora’ by Anthony Julius and finds the author's vigilance justified.

England can make the dubious boast of being the first country to have expelled the Jews en masse, in 1290. It also invented one of the strangest types of anti-Semitism, the blood libel. In the Middle Ages, Jews were massacred in York, Lincoln and elsewhere because of claims that they had kidnapped and killed Christian children for the blood of ritual sacrifice. This image of horror is still used against Jews. Modern newspaper cartoons – it is often in cartoons that the underlying visceral feeling appears most clearly – quite often depict Israeli leaders as deliberately killing children, and sometimes as vampiric. By a peculiar twist in our politics, such cartoons are now much more likely to appear in grand Leftish papers – such as the Guardian and the Independent – than in Right-wing popular ones.

There never was any evidence for the blood libel. But total lies can be surprisingly effective. In our time, the more important anti-Semitic lie is the denial of the Holocaust. You would think that its blatant untruth would kill it, but it turns out that the sheer scale of the lie has a curious power. Holocaust denial is a frequent feature of modern Muslim anti-Semitism, assiduously promoted by President Ahmedinejad of Iran. In this country, the Muslim Council of Britain, while not actually denying the events of the Second World War, objects to what it sees as the privileged status the words "the Holocaust" confer on Jews. It will only mark the Holocaust if other genocides are commemorated too, and many extreme Muslims pretend that Israel is itself genocidal.

Holocaust denial helps resolve a dilemma in the minds of anti-Semites. They believe that Jews secretly rule the world. But if this is true, how can it be that they allowed six million of their number to be murdered? Answer: it didn't happen! The Jews pretended they had been killed in order to win unique sympathy, set up their own state, and advance their power. The same mind-warp is applied to more recent events. Polls suggest that large minorities of Muslims believe that "the Jews" blew up the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Such madness is not confined to ignorant Muslim masses stirred up by fanatics: I have heard it seriously advanced by non-Muslims at a respectable dinner party. >>> Charles Moore | Monday, March 22, 2010
