Scriptwriter David Hare on Denial, Truth and Trump - BBC Newsnight

Holocaust Denier David Irving rose to prominence as a historian who refused to believe in the concentration camps of Auschwitz. In 1996 - he brought a case against Penguin Books and the American historian Deborah Lipstadt - accusing her of libelling him in her book. The case has now been made into a major film, Denial, which opens this week in the UK. Emily Maitlis spoke to its scriptwriter David Hare about parallels with now.

British Bishop Richard Williamson to Go on Trial in Germany for Holocaust Denial

MAIL ONLINE: British Holocaust-denying bishop Richard Williamson faces trial in Germany for an outspoken TV interview in which he denied that the wartime extermination of the Jews took place.

The ultra-conservative Catholic cleric was hit with a fine of nearly £12,000 today by a court for his comments made to a Swedish television interviewer - but he refused to pay it.

Because Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany - and because he gave the interview while on German soil - he was prosecuted in Regensburg, near to the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI, where he gave the interview.

Under the German legal system, he was served with an ‘order of punishment’ informing him of the penalty.

Such orders are intended to cut down on bureaucracy and costs if both sides agree with the fine, which also would mean a criminal conviction.

But Williamson did not agree. He is to appeal, paving the way for a full hearing which could prove highly embarrassing for the church once more - even though Williamson can absent himself from proceedings to be represented just by his lawyer.

A trial judge will demand to know why he believes that six million Jews were not murdered by the Nazis and on what facts he bases his views on.

In the controversial interview, Williamson alleged that Nazi gas chambers had never existed and 'only 200,000 to 300,000 Jews' had been killed by the Nazis.

He went on to claim that historical evidence was 'hugely against six million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler... I believe there were no gas chambers.'

He added: 'I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in the Nazi concentration camps but none of them in gas chambers.' >>> Allan Hall | Wednesday, November 10, 2009

Iranian President Raises Stakes Against Israel

REUTERS: TEHRAN - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad raised the stakes against Israel on Friday and called the Holocaust a lie, just as world powers try to decide how to deal with the nuclear ambitions of an Iran in political turmoil.

"The pretext (Holocaust) for the creation of the Zionist regime (Israel) is false ... It is a lie based on an unprovable and mythical claim," he told worshippers at Tehran University at the end of an annual anti-Israel "Qods (Jerusalem) Day" rally.

"Confronting the Zionist regime is a national and religious duty."

Ahmadinejad's anti-Western comments on the Holocaust have caused international outcry and isolated Iran, which is at loggerheads with the West over its nuclear program.

The hard-line president warned leaders of Western-allied Arab and Muslim countries about dealing with Israel.

"This regime (Israel) will not last long. Do not tie your fate to it ... This regime has no future. Its life has come to an end," he said in a speech broadcast live on state radio.

Britain was swift in condemning Ahmadinejad's remarks, calling them "abhorrent as well as ignorant."

"It is very important that the world community stands up against this tide of abuse. This outburst is not worthy of the leader of Iran," Foreign Secretary David Miliband said. >>> Parisa Hafezi and Firouz Sedarat | Friday, September 18, 2009
Extract: Khatami Attacked, Ahmadinejad Denies the Holocaust

YNET NEWS: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech at Tehran University, hinting once again that the Holocaust never took place.

According to him, "If the Holocaust was planned by the West, why won't you allow any research on the Holocaust? The Holocaust has turned into a black box and they won't let anyone open it and examine it… If this is such an important event, why won't you let us reveal the reality to the entire world?"

'Zionists greatest criminals in history'

Ahmadinejad reiterated his past "proposal", to have the Jews immigrate to other country. "Why don't they immigrate to Canada or the United States? They can go live in other countries. The Palestinian people don’t have to pay for your crime. What is the Palestinians' sin?

"The Zionists are the greatest criminals in history. Resisting the Zionists is a national duty and a religious commandment and a human duty. The Zionist regime is a tree with rotten roots," Ahmadinejad said.

He added, "It's clear that this fake regime was established for colonialist goals, and there is no logic behind its establishment." The crowd responded by chanting, "Death to Israel." [Source: YnetNews] Dudi Cohen and Reuters | Friday, September 18, 2009

Experts: Iran's Jews to Vote for Ahmadinejad

YNET NEWS: He's denied the Holocaust a number of times, and continues to threaten Israel, but the majority of Iran's 25,000 Jews are still expected to support the current president in Friday's elections. 'They want to be on the winning side,' experts explain

Voting stations throughout Iran will open Friday morning, and 46 million citizens will be casting their votes for their next president.

Several thousand of these eligible voters belong to the Jewish community within the Islamic State, and, contrary to what some may believe, experts estimate that most of these Jews will actually be casting a ballot with current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's name on it.

This, is spite of the fact that he has denied the Holocaust on a number of occasions, threatened the destruction of Israel and continues to move forward with his nuclear ambitions.

There are currently some 25,000 Jews living in Iran, and most of the eligible voters from this community are expected to show up and vote in the country's elections in which Ahmadinejad will be running against prominent reformist rival Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karoubi and Mohsen Rezai.

"They are leaning towards leaving Ahmadinejad in his post because Mousavi is unpredictable," David Mutai, Spokesman of the Central Organization of Iranian Immigrants in Israel told Ynet. >>> Yael Levy | Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Holocaust Denier Faces Jail in Australia for Contempt

THE TELEGRAPH: Frederick Toben, an Australian 'revisionist historian', has been sentenced to three months in jail after publishing offensive material about Jews and the Holocaust on his website.

Toben, 65, had been banned in 2002 from circulating anti-Semitic material on the website of the Adelaide Institute and had promised to abide by the order.

But a civil case brought by Jeremy Jones, former president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, found Toben had breached the order 24 out of an alleged 28 times.

The material he had published claimed that the Holocaust never happened and implied that Jewish people who challenged Holocaust deniers were of "limited intelligence". >>> By Bonnie Malkin in Sydney | Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Holocaust Row Bishop Arrives in Britain

THE TELEGRAPH: Bishop Richard Williamson, who was asked to leave Argentina after making "deeply offensive" comments about the Holocaust, has arrived back in Britain.

The British-born Roman Catholic bishop flew into London's Heathrow airport from Buenos Aires where he was met by a crowd of international media and an armed police guard.

The bishop, who was given 10 days to leave Argentina by the country's government, declined to answer questions from the press as he was taken to a waiting car by police officers.

Those meeting him, including other Roman Catholic priests, also declined to comment before the vehicle sped away.

The bishop had been resident in Argentina until this week at the St Pius X seminary in the capital.

But after remarks he made in a Swedish television interview were broadcast, the government branded his view "deeply offensive".

He claimed in the interview last month that historical evidence was "hugely against six million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler ... I believe there were no gas chambers."

He added: "I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in the Nazi concentration camps but none of them in gas chambers."

The Vatican has ordered Bishop Williamson to retract his comments and the Catholic Church in England and Wales has said he must do so before he can "enter into full communion with the church". >>> | Wednesday, February 25, 2009

THE TELEGRAPH: Vatican Complains to Israel about 'Blasphemous' TV Programme

The Vatican has lodged a formal complaint with the Israeli government over a TV programme that "ridiculed and blasphemed" Jesus and Mary.

In the programme, the host denied Christian traditions - that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus walked on water - saying he would do so as a "lesson" to Christians who deny the Holocaust, a reference to the Vatican's recent lifting of the excommunication of a bishop who denied 6 million Jews were killed during the Second World War. The rehabilitation sparked outrage among Jews.

The host, a well-known Israeli comedian Lior Shlein, also claimed that Mary became pregnant at 15 by a schoolmate and said that Jesus could never have walked on water because "he was so fat he was ashamed to leave the house, let alone go to the Sea of Galilee with a bathing suit."A statement from the Vatican press office said its representative in Israel had complained to the government about the show, which was broadcast recently on private Channel 10, one of Israel's three main television stations. >>> | Saturday, February 21, 2009

Germany Bans Two Far-Right Groups

BBC: German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schauble has shut down two far-right organisations, describing them as "reservoirs" of Holocaust deniers.

In a statement, the interior ministry said the authorities had raided 30 sites linked to the groups, which were based in three western German states.

Mr Schauble said they had been involved in "disseminating anti-Semitic propaganda" and glorifying the Nazis.

Holocaust denial is a criminal offence under German law.
The interior ministry said both groups had violated Germany's constitution.

They were named as Collegium Humanum and the Association for the Rehabilitation of Those Persecuted for Questioning the Holocaust, and were said to be based in Lower Saxony, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia. [Source: Germany Bans Two Far-Right Groups] | May 7, 2008

Italian University Closes Because of Holocaust Denial

BBC: An Italian university has closed down one of its campuses to prevent a planned lecture by a controversial French professor and Holocaust denier.

Robert Faurisson has been convicted five times in France for denying crimes against humanity.

He was due to speak at the University of Teramo in central Italy as part of a Masters course in Middle East studies.

But the university decided to close part of the campus to prevent him addressing students.

It said the "climate of tension" might endanger the safety of its students. University shut in Holocaust row (more)
