THE TELEGRAPH: Osama bin Laden must be captured or killed if al-Qaeda is ever going to be defeated, the top US commander in Afghanistan has said.
Gen Stanley McChrystal said bin Laden had become an "iconic figure" among terrorists.
He said President Barack Obama's deployment of 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan meant success was possible.
But he said the mission was "undeniably difficult" and the next 18 months would be crucial.
"I don't think that we can finally defeat al Qaeda until he's captured or killed," Gen McChrystal told a Senate committee.
At the same time, he cautioned that killing or capturing the Saudi-born leader of the group that mounted the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States would not by itself dismantle al-Qaeda. >>> | Wednesday, December 09, 2009

THE TELEGRAPH: The head of the British Army, General Sir David Richards, has issued a wake-up call to the public by warning of the "terrifying prospect" of a defeat in Afghanistan.
In an unprecedented intervention, the chief of the general staff described the conflict as "this generation's war" and added that failure by Nato would have an "intoxicating effect" on militant Islam.
In his first interview as the head of the Army, Sir David told The Sunday Telegraph that if Britain and Nato failed in Afghanistan the risks to the western world would be "enormous" and "unimaginable".
He said: "If al-Qaeda and the Taliban believe they have defeated us – what next? Would they stop at Afghanistan? Pakistan is clearly a tempting target not least because of the fact that it is a nuclear-weaponed state and that is a terrifying prospect. Even if only a few of those (nuclear) weapons fell into their hands, believe me they would use them. The recent airlines plot has reminded us that there are people out there who would happily blow all of us up."
The general's intervention comes at a crucial time, with the US General in charge of operations in Afghanistan calling for more troops to be sent to the country to fight the Taliban.
At home, the Government has come under increasing pressure for the way it has handled the war, with critics saying the armed forces have been under-resourced. >>> Sean Rayment, Defence Correspondent | Saturday, October 03, 2009

BBC: Lawmakers in New Hampshire have rejected a bill that would have granted marriage rights to gay couples.
The state's Senate passed the bill, but the House of Representatives voted it down by 188 votes to 186.
The chamber had approved an earlier version of the bill, but blocked the new version, which included legal protections for religious groups.
The state's governor, John Lynch, threatened to veto the bill if it did not include religious exemptions. >>> | Wednesday, May 20, 2009

THE TELEGRAPH: Hillary Clinton has revived her campaign for the White House nomination, winning three primary election votes and seizing back the momentum from Barack Obama.
Mrs Clinton vowed to continue fighting for the Democratic nomination beyond the spring as she won the critical primary poll in Texas.
The former First Lady earlier claimed victory in Rhode Island and Ohio while Mr Obama, who came into the four-state contest with 11 straight victories under his belt, won the small, liberal state of Vermont.
"You know what they say: As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.
"Well, this nation's coming back and so is this campaign," Mrs Clinton said to a cheering crowd in the state capital Columbus, as she celebrated her victory. Hillary Clinton defeats Barack Obama in Ohio and Texas >>> By Toby Harnden in Columbus and Alex Spillius in San Antonio
