Who's Still With Trump? (2016): As the saying goes, 'win Ohio, win the White House'. Once America's industrial heartland, the so-called Rust Belt has been in steady decline for decades. This report explores why some voters are looking to Trump.

Barack Obama's Final Midterm Rally Highlights Declining Popularity

THE GUARDIAN: Voter disenchantment with US president was reflected by 5,000 empty seats during event at Cleveland's Wolfstein centre

Thousands of empty seats at Barack Obama's last campaign rally of the midterm elections today highlighted the decline in his popularity and the potential meltdown facing the Democrats at the polls on Tuesday.

Screens at Cleveland's Wolfstein centre showed the Obama logo from the 2008 White House race, the old campaign songs were played and the crowd chanted his slogan 'Yes, we can'. But the excitement and euphoria of that campaign were long gone. About 8,000 people turned out to see Obama in the 13,000-capacity stadium, compared with the 80,000 at a rally in the city two days before the 2008 election.

Speaking in Cleveland at the end of a whirlwind four-state tour , Obama said it was an important election. "We have the chance to set the direction of this country for many years to come," he said. He warned that the Republicans could roll back all the progress of the last two years if they won big.

He admitted it was "a difficult election" because of the state of the economy, and blamed the Republicans for creating the federal deficit – a theme he has repeated throughout the campaign but one that has failed to resonate with the electorate.

The Democrats face defeat on a scale that political analysts say has not been seen in more than 60 years. A CNN poll today put support for the Republicans at 52% and 42% for the Democrats , a big enough lead to ensure the Republicans take control of the House of Representatives and cut deep into the Democratic majority in the Senate. >>> Ewen MacAskill in Cleveland | Sunday, October 31, 2010

FBI Make Christian Militia Arrests

THE TELEGRAPH: The FBI has carried out a series of raids on Christian militia across America after they feared the groups were about to launch a bombing campaign in anticipation of Armageddon.

Nine members of a Christian militia group in the American Midwest were charged on Monday with plotting to kill a police officer and then blow up mourners at his funeral.

Members of the Hutaree, self-proclaimed "Christian warriors" who conduct paramilitary training in readiness for the arrival of the anti-Christ, were seized after a series of FBI raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

The nine – including a couple and their two sons – face charges that include attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, seditious conspiracy and teaching the use of explosives.

Prosecutors said the FBI moved in after learning that the group planned a violent reconnaissance mission some time in April.

Monitoring groups say that right-wing militia groups have enjoyed a dramatic resurgence amid growing anger at what they see as an oppressive federal government and fears of gun control.

The Michigan-based Hutaree view law enforcement agencies, including local police, as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, said prosecutors. >>> Tom Leonard in New York | Monday, March 29, 2010
Christian Militia Group Members Arrested by FBI

THE TELEGRAPH: FBI agents have arrested seven people in a series of raids targeting a Christian militia group.

The raids took place in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio over the weekend and were reportedly carried out by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The suspects are expected to make an initial appearance in US District Court in Detroit later today.

A source close to the investigation in Washington, D.C. told the Detroit News that FBI agents were conducting activities in connection to Hutaree, a Christian militia group whose members describe themselves as Christian soldiers preparing for the arrival and battle with the anti-Christ. >>> | Monday, March 29, 2010

The American Way of Death

TIMES ONLINE – Leading Article: A botched execution in Ohio should quicken the end of capital punishment

America is the only big democracy — apart, occasionally, from Japan — that still carries out capital punishment. The botched attempted execution in Ohio this week of a murderer should prompt America to join the rest of the developed world in consigning judicial killing to history. There is inadequate evidence that it acts as a deterrent, it ignores the risk of miscarriages of justice and allows no room for repentance or correction. But above all it is a barbarity that stains civilised society.

There is no question but that the crime committed by Romell Broom was vile. He was sentenced to die for the rape and murder in 1984 of a 14-year-old girl. But his execution on Tuesday was halted when technicians failed, after a two-hour-long search, to find a vein sturdy enough to deliver the three-drug lethal injection.

A one-week reprieve granted by the Governor of Ohio may well be extended indefinitely, partly because it is half a century since any inmate was subjected to more than one execution, and partly because some justices of the US Supreme Court have now begun to wonder if botched lethal injections might not violate the eighth amendment ban on “cruel and unusual punishment”. Last year the court upheld the use of lethal injections. But Justice John Paul Stevens, while concurring, said that imposing the death penalty represented “the pointless and needless extinction of life with only marginal contributions to any discernible social or public purposes”. Other justices are believed to share this view.

When Texas became the first US state to introduce lethal injections in 1982, they were thought more humane than the electric chair, gas or hanging. It is time that they went the same way. [Source: Times Online / Comment here] Leading Article | Thursday, September 17, 2009

Hillary Clinton Defeats Obama in Ohio and Texas

THE TELEGRAPH: Hillary Clinton has revived her campaign for the White House nomination, winning three primary election votes and seizing back the momentum from Barack Obama.

Mrs Clinton vowed to continue fighting for the Democratic nomination beyond the spring as she won the critical primary poll in Texas.

The former First Lady earlier claimed victory in Rhode Island and Ohio while Mr Obama, who came into the four-state contest with 11 straight victories under his belt, won the small, liberal state of Vermont.

"You know what they say: As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.

"Well, this nation's coming back and so is this campaign," Mrs Clinton said to a cheering crowd in the state capital Columbus, as she celebrated her victory. Hillary Clinton defeats Barack Obama in Ohio and Texas >>> By Toby Harnden in Columbus and Alex Spillius in San Antonio

Where IS All This Money Coming from, Mr Obama?

DAILY MAIL: Barack Obama has splashed twice as much cash as Hillary Clinton in his determination to land decisive blows in tomorrow's two primaries.

The Illinois senator's spending on TV commercials in Texas since early February is £5million, double that of Mrs Clinton.

He outspent his Democratic rival by a similar margin in Ohio.

Last month the Obama campaign raised a record £25million, which he has used to fund his final push for votes.

Mr Obama put together a team of 350 paid organisers across both states, while Mrs Clinton has had to rely mainly on volunteers.

Defeats in the two delegaterich states will all but end her push for the White House.

Polls show Mr Obama, 46, has moved into a slight lead in Texas after trailing for months. In Ohio, the 60- year- old former first lady retains an edge.

"Senator Obama is spending a lot of money on TV. If this can be purchased, he can win it,' Ohio state governor Ted Strickland said yesterday. Big spender Obama goes in for the kill ahead of Tuesday's make-or-break primaries >>> By David Gardner
