Democracy under Threat? The Rise of the Far-right in Germany | DW Documentary

Oct 8, 2024 | Support for the far-right is growing in Germany, raising fears of a new 1933 - the year Adolf Hitler came to power. Does the recent electoral success of the far-right Alternative for Germany party indicate the country’s democracy is under threat?

In the eastern state of Thuringia, the extreme right has become the strongest force in the state parliament for the first time in post-war history. The development has triggered comparisons to the rise of Hitler - it was in Thuringia that the Nazis first entered a regional government, just three years before Hitler took power nationwide.

Some Germans are concerned that democracy is hanging in the balance. Hundreds of thousands of people are now taking to the streets regularly to voice their support for democracy and take a stand against right-wing extremism. But is the Germany of 2024 really comparable to that of 1933?

This documentary explores parallels between then and now, and also looks at other events that took place in Germany in the 1980s and 1990s. Back then, neo-Nazis wanted to make the small town of Langen in Hesse the first "foreigner-free” town in Germany. After German reunification in 1990, right-wing extremist groups also became increasingly influential in East Germany. Is the AfD's election success a further step in the growth of the far-right in Germany and a threat to democracy?

Arrests, Detentions, and Blacklists Pile Pressure on Serbian Activists | DW News

These developments raise significant concerns about the rule of law and democratic standards in Serbia and call into question the country's commitment to European values.

Giggling Elon Musk Revisits ‘Joke’ about Kamala Harris Assassination

THE GUARDIAN: Billionaire says it would be pointless to kill ‘puppet’ vice-president in interview with Tucker Carlson

Elon Musk has said it would be “pointless” to try to kill Kamala Harris weeks after a pressure campaign led to him to delete a social media post expressing surprise that no one had tried to assassinate the vice-president or Joe Biden.

The Tesla and Space X entrepreneur re-entered the murky waters of political assassinations in a web video interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson which Musk then posted on the X platform that he owns.

Referencing the original comment at the beginning of the one hour and 48 minute exchange, Musk tells Carlson: “I made a joke, which I realised – I deleted – which is like: nobody’s even bothering to try to kill Kamala because it’s pointless. What do you achieve?”

Both men dissolved into laughter, with Carlson responding: “It’s deep and true though.” » | Robert Tait in Washington | Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Why France’s Most Controversial Novelist Is Also Its Most Celebrated

THE NEW TORK TIMES: Reviled as much as he is lauded, Michel Houellebecq holds up a mirror to a world we would rather not see.

Michel Houellebecq | Antoine d’Agata/Magnum, for The New York Times

Michel Houellebecq — arguably the most important French writer of the past quarter-century — was perched on the seat of his chair like a bird. We were sitting in his dim Paris apartment in August, a spectacularly beautiful day visible through his curtained windows, to discuss his new novel, “Annihilation,” which appears this week and returns to the themes of male loneliness and civilizational decline that have made his reputation. During our time together, Houellebecq, who is 68, would slump deeper and deeper in his chair, to the point where it seemed he would need help rising, only to pop back up, with unexpected agility, to balance once again on the balls of his feet. I had been trying to ask him about his life, but he was deftly deflecting personal questions — he had been answering them for decades and seemed done with that dance — until I asked him to tell me a little bit about his early life as a reader.

“I have moved too many times in my life,” he said in his weak, reedy voice. “But I kept one of my favorites.”

Houellebecq rose and searched a bookshelf near at hand, retrieving a small, well-worn book. It was “Les Contes d’Andersen,” a French translation of the Danish fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, No. 28 in “Lectures et Loisirs,” a series of books for children. This particular copy was published in 1960, four years after Houellebecq was born. On its cover, a little mermaid sat on a pink shell, weeping. An oyster, its pearl gleaming, lay open at her feet, and a blue fish with a pink tail and lush eyelashes looked at the mermaid with worry. » | Wyatt Mason | Wyatt Mason is a contributing writer for the magazine who has written about Cormac McCarthy’s tough-guy persona, Sigrid Nunez’s art of observing and the poet Shane McCrae’s rupture from his father. | Tuesday, October 8, 2024

FPÖ: Wahnsinn: EU will Rauchen im Freien verbieten

Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi: A Message to the Friends of the Iranian People across the Middle East

Oct 7, 2024 | “The Middle East, the cradle of civilization, is rich with stories of great kings, prophets, and philosophers. From Cyrus to Moses to Ibn Khaldoun, our nations have given the world some of its greatest visionaries. Leaders like Anwar Sadat, King Hussein, Menachem Begin, King Faisal, and my father, too, took up the mantle of seeking peace for our peoples.

But for 45 years, too many of us have been forced to live in fear. Fear of the next terrorist attack. Fear of war. Fear of economic instability. Fear of nuclear blackmail. That’s because 45 years ago my country was taken hostage by a radical regime that seeks, not only to keep my people in chains, but to export its revolution to your countries and your people.

The regime in Tehran is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents: Iranians, Arabs, and Israelis. Christians, Muslims, and Jews. It facilitated the October 7th attack. It fuelled sectarian conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen. It is trying to unseat the Hashemite Kingdom and delegitimize the custodian of the two Holy Mosques. It uses Palestinians as human shields.

And now, it has brought our cradle of civilization to the cusp of regional war. And so today I come to you with a message: this is not the Iranian people’s war. It is Ali Khamenei and his regime’s war. The tyrant in Tehran couches his warmongering in Iranian nationalism. But he does not speak for our nation. The crimes his regime has committed against you, our neighbors, are an affront to Iranians and our values. For us Iranians, pride in our nation and love of our country do not come at the price of hatred, antagonism, or chauvinism.

My compatriots have shown, time and time again, that they do not want Iran's wealth spent on fuelling wars, fostering instability, or funding terrorism. Iranians are not your enemy. It is the Islamic Republic that is our common enemy. The enemy of all peace-seeking people in our regions; whatever nation they come from or whatever faith they practice.”

What does such a genealogical study reveal about the real dynastic name of the United Kingdom's royal house? This video is just a bit of fun, Allan Barton is not suggesting the king should change the dynastic name!

Trump’s Speeches, Increasingly Angry and Rambling, Reignite the Question of Age

THE NEW TORK TIMES: With the passage of time, the 78-year-old former president’s speeches have grown darker, harsher, longer, angrier, less focused, more profane and increasingly fixated on the past, according to a review of his public appearances over the years.

Former President Donald J. Trump vividly recounted how the audience at his climactic debate with Vice President Kamala Harris was on his side. Except that there was no audience. The debate was held in an empty hall. No one “went crazy,” as Mr. Trump put it, because no one was there.

Anyone can misremember, of course. But the debate had been just a week earlier and a fairly memorable moment. And it was hardly the only time Mr. Trump has seemed confused, forgetful, incoherent or disconnected from reality lately. In fact, it happens so often these days that it no longer even generates much attention.

He rambles, he repeats himself, he roams from thought to thought — some of them hard to understand, some of them unfinished, some of them factually fantastical. He voices outlandish claims that seem to be made up out of whole cloth. He digresses into bizarre tangents about golf, about sharks, about his own beautiful” body. He relishes “a great day in Louisiana” after spending the day in Georgia. He expresses fear that North Korea is “trying to kill me” when he presumably means Iran. As late as last month, Mr. Trump was still speaking as if he were running against President Biden, five weeks after his withdrawal from the race. » | Peter Baker and Dylan Freedman Videos by Chevaz Clarke and Aaron Byrd, Peter Baker covered the Trump presidency and wrote a book on it with his wife, Susan Glasser. Netanyahu Hits Out at Macron over Call for Halt to Arms Exports to Israel

THE GUARDIAN: Israeli prime minister turns on French counterpart’s continuing efforts towards a ceasefire and end to violence in Lebanon

A call by Emmanuel Macron for a halt in arms supplies to Israel for use in Gaza has been met with an angry rebuttal from the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

The French president’s comments were directed mainly at the US and were part of continuing French efforts to revive its call for a ceasefire in Lebanon.

France provides few arms to Israel but is keen to strengthen its longstanding influence in Lebanon by showing it wants the US to put some genuine pressure on Israel to accept a ceasefire. Washington appeared to mount little diplomatic resistance when Israel – after sending mixed signals – rejected a US-French plan for a 21 day ceasefire in Lebanon announced at the UN in New York nearly a fortnight ago.

In an interview recorded on Monday, but broadcast on Saturday, Macron told France Inter radio: “I think that today, the priority is that we return to a political solution, that we stop supplying weapons to lead the fighting in Gaza.” » | Patrick Wintour, Diplomatic editor | Sunday, October 6, 2024

To my great surprise, Emmanuel Macron is on the wrong side of history on this! Macron is ignoring what Hamas did to Israel and Israelis on October 7th, 2023, and he is ignoring the fact that Benjamin Netanyahu with our help will be able to rid the world of the scourges of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Hamas. The Palestinian question will never be solved with these two rogue powers undermining peace in the region. We all want the very best for Palestinians. These poor people have suffered enough. But we cannot help Palestinians attain peace and prosperity if Iran and Hamas are big players in the region. They will sour it all. And let us not forget the heinous crimes that Hamas committed against the Israelis in 2023. – © Mark Alexander

Saudi Executions Hit Record Number under ‘Reformist Prince’

THE TELEGRAPH: Rise in capital punishment under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, despite pledge to cut down on the death penalty

Saudi Arabia has reached a record high for executions despite pledges to cut down the death penalty.

There have been some 208 deaths so far in 2024, eclipsing the 2022 record of 196, 81 in a single day.

The executions have been carried out under reformist Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has overseen at least 1,447 executions carried out since he was made Crown Prince to his elderly father, Salman, in 2015.

It comes as on October 9, UN member states will vote on whether to allow Saudi Arabia a seat on the Human Rights Council.

Reforms made in the kingdom include allowing women to drive and bringing in some of the world’s top names in sport and entertainment.

However, the rise in capital punishment continues, with 32 in September alone, and 41 in August, the 2024 monthly high so far, despite a moratorium on the use of the death penalty in 2020. » | Melanie Swan | Sunday, October 6, 2024

Tunisia’s Autocratic Leader Is Poised to Steamroll to Election Victory

THE NEW YORK TIMES: President Kais Saied, who has jailed opponents and consolidated power, is almost certain to win Sunday’s election in the North African country, the birthplace of the Arab Spring movement.

For many Tunisians, there seems to be little point to the presidential election on Sunday. There are barely any candidate posters, no debates and not much suspense. The president, Kais Saied, appears so sure of victory that he has not even issued any policy proposals.

His leading challenger is in prison, serving three separate sentences on what his lawyers say are falsified charges, the longest sentence lasting 12 years. At least eight other would-be candidates are in jail or under a form of house arrest, and others have been disqualified from the ballot.

More than a decade after mass protests toppled the country’s longtime dictator, Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, prompting other Arab Spring revolts across the Middle East, few in Tunisia still believe they live in a democracy. The string of punishments for the president’s critics and his ever-tightening hold over the election process in recent months have left little doubt that Mr. Saied’s one-man rule is here to stay.

“He’s willing to do anything it takes to stay in power — dividing Tunisians, prosecuting them, accusing them,” said Souhaib Fercheche, 30, a senior campaigner at I Watch, a civic watchdog formed by young Tunisians in the heady, hopeful days after the country’s 2011 revolution. » | Vivian Yee, Reporting from Tunis | Sunday, October 6, 2024

British Republicanism: A Necessary Evil

Sep 20, 2024

My posting of this rather controversial video should in no way be construed as an endorsement of its content. Some parts of it, I agree with; other parts, not.

Rather, I am posting this very interesting video because it shows how much the stability of this once proud and homogenous nation has been rocked by events in the past decades, and especially, in my opinion, by the disaster that was Brexit. The nation has been thrust into a period of navel-gazing.

For what it is worth, as the nation is being impoverished by Brexit and other world events with catastrophic consequences for the UK economy and the fact that we are now governed by a far-left administration, the longevity of our established institutions — and that includes our monarchy — can no longer be taken for granted. The death of Her Majesty the Late Queen Elizabeth II, a source of great stability to the United Kingdom, has had a profound and lasting effect on this once proud, unified and successful nation. Its centre of gravity seems to have tilted. — © Mark Alexander

Oct 5, 2024 | The Tory Party Conference ended this week. So what, you might think! It’s an irrelevance. Farage & Johnson Are to Blame for the Post-Brexit Mess We Are In

Oct 5, 2024 | The UK economy has been badly damaged by Brexit. However, the Conservative government made matters very much worse once Boris Johnson became prime minister. Johnson was not a serious politician and during his premiership dishonesty, corruption and incompetence became the norm.

The Covid19 pandemic brought an urgent need for PPE which, instead of being supplied through normal channels was supplied by companies recommended by friends of Tory politicians, leading to widespread supply of faulty or useless PPE. In the meantime, companies which had never supplied PPE before made fortunes.

Last week, the Conservative Party Conference took place in Birmingham. Liz Truss, despite being the shortest-serving and least-successful prime minister ever was present at the event.

Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat, Kemi Badenoch and James Cleverly all made speeches in their bids to become party leader. Jenrick and Cleverly are likely to be the two candidates to be subject to an election amongst Tory Party members.

In this video, I also discuss Priti Patel and Nadhim Zahawi. Patel because she received money for her failed leadership election bid from someone closely connected with someone for whom she helped obtain PPE contracts, and Zahawi because he claimed expenses in order to heat his stables and because of a £5 million penalty he paid HMRC in respect of capital gains tax which he claims he forgot to declare.

Finally I remind viewers how it was Nigel Farage who was principally responsible for Brexit, and it was Boris Johnson who presided over corruption, dishonesty and incompetence which has led the UK to being in the dire situation we now.

”Assisted Dying”

MARK ALEXANDER: Assisted dying is a euphemism for euthanasia. Let us be clear about that! So, let us call it exactly what it is.

I know that there are strong arguments in favour of euthanasia, but there are also many strong arguments against it. The harsh reality is that humans have started to play God; and the Anglican Church is strangely silent on this most sensitive of issues.

Our atheist leader — the Führer — is said to be all for it. But then he would be, wouldn’t he, with his belief system, or lack of one? Surely, he will be glad to be able to pass such a bill; the billions saved for the Treasury will quickly start to fill his “black hole”.

These days, most people bundle their old and infirm into care homes, without compunction. Life is easier that way! That they do this is a sad indictment of the über-materialistic times we live in, a sad indictment of modern Western societies.

The West truly has lost its way now. Expect its demise sooner rather than later. This moral void will most certainly be filled, however. We are a post-Christian society now: people have abandoned Christianity. They have abandoned God. But I believe it is true to say that God will not have abandoned them. He will manifest Himself in another way, in another, fast-growing religion in this country: Islam.

We need to think carefully about this step into the unknown, which we appear determined to take.

ADDENDUM:

It should be noted that doctors practise “assisted dying” already. I know this for a fact because my life’s partner was assisted in his passing in Philadelphia in 2016 under my very own eyes. His continued and long-term hospital care became too expensive for his premium health insurance to countenance. So, steps were taken to help him on his way! It was so subtle, even I didn’t realise what was happening until it was too late! – © Mark Alexander

Boris Johnson Joins Nigel Farage in Saying UK Needs Referendum on ECHR Membership - Enough!

Oct 4, 2024

BoJo belongs in a circus! Circuses are the natural homes for clowns!

We have had a string of clowns trying to govern us since that ridiculous Brexit referendum. And what a dog’s dinner they have all made of governing us, too!

Referendums are generally not used in this country. We have a representative democracy. We have only ever had three referendums across the United Kingdom. The very first was held in 1975 on our membership of the then so-called Common Market, which eventually became the European Union.

Margaret Thatcher was very much against referenda. She believed them to be the devices of dictators and demagogues!

To ask an electorate for its views on a subject such as the European Union was bad enough. Why? Because few voters truly understood the workings of the European Union, and still less the ramifications on the economy and Britain’s standing in the world should we leave the Union. So, that referendum was absurd enough. But to do what BoJo now suggests and ask the people to vote on our membership of the ECHR as well takes absurdity to a whole new level. How much sense does it make to ask an electorate to vote on something they simply do not understand?

BoJo is playing fast and loose with the future of this country. It would be preferably if he kept his batty ideas to himself! This country is in enough of a mess as a result of the last referendum, there is no need for BoJo to add to the country’s woes. The same goes for Britain's troublemaker par excellence, otherwise known as Nigel Farage. Trump's chum. – © Mark Alexander

Sharp Rise in Vaping among Young Adult Non-smokers

BBC: The number of adults in England to have started vaping despite never having been regular smokers has reached one million, scientists estimate.

This is a sharp increase on 2020, with disposable vapes having been available since 2021. The rise is driven mostly by young adults - with about one out of every seven 18-24-year-olds who never regularly smoked now using e-cigarettes. While some may have benefited by taking up vapes instead of traditional cigarettes - the trend could be worrying, experts say. » | Smitha Mundasad, Health reporter, BBC News | Thursday, October 3, 2024

Is vaping bad for you and how are the rules changing?: he number of adults and young people using e-cigarettes and vapes has increased as smoking rates have fallen. »

It serves the silly fools right! They have waged an unrelenting war on smoking cigarettes for years, and now we have this vaping problem instead!

Nobody in his right mind would advocate smoking, but the FACT remains that we do not live in Utopia. People will seek out their pleasures regardless of what stupid, controlling governments might wish. IDIOTIC WESTERN GOVERNMENTS have created this vaping problem because they have PUSHED vaping as a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking. IT ISN’T! If they had left things alone, smoking rates were declining significantly anyway. But now, because of their stupid policies, vaping rates have increased significantly. VAPING IS EXTREMEMELY UNHEALTHY. Probably unhealthier than smoking cigarettes. Further, behaviour patterns in the States show us that many people who now vape move on to cigarette smoking as they mature. Vaping is, after all, more appealing to the young. Mature people prefer cigarette smoking.

Best not to vape and best not to smoke, but if you have to choose, I would say smoking is a far better option. Make smoking cool again! It makes sense. – © Mark Alexander

Young Finnish Men Baffle Experts by Embracing Monastic Life

YAHOO! NEWS: Early starts, strict routines and discipline: more and more young men in Finland are being drawn to the rigours of monastic life and its conservative values.

In such a secular and progressive country, where experts had expected the young to be less religious, Christianity has been gaining ground -- among young men at least.

Inside the dazzling white Valamo monastery, the country's only Eastern Orthodox abbey, the day begins at 6:00 am with prayers, followed by breakfast and chores. Life here is much as it has been for hundreds of years.

But despite the spartan life, the brotherhood has been growing fast, expanding from around 10 monks to 18 in a few years. » | Anna Korkman | Monday, September 16, 2024

Why Britain's Dark Ages Remain Shrouded in Mystery | King Arthur's Britain | Timeline

May 15, 2017 | Francis Pryor examines the relics of the Dark Ages to build a fuller picture of this much-maligned era. Popular belief has always held that the departure of the Romans led to barbarism in Britain, but archaeological finds have shed light on a cultured, literate society that embraced the growing Romanised Christian religion and embarked on a profitable trading relationship with the Byzantine Empire.

Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.

Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

Brexit and the Empire: Is This the End of ‘Global Britain’? | DISPATCH | UK Politics Documentary

Sep 30, 2024

Britons who voted for Brexit were either duped by the system and the lies they were fed or were insane. Nobody in his right mind who has any understanding of economics would have voted to leave the largest single market in the whole world — a market which is right on our doorstep!

We Brits have paid a very high price for this INSANITY and ECONOMIC IGNORANCE. We have ended up poorer! Much poorer! People like Farage, Hannan & Co., and other clowns like them would belong in the stocks of their local public squares in an earlier age. Idiotic clowns all! Alas we, the people, must pay the very high price for the follies of the few. We have been forced to relinquish our rights as full-on citizens of Europe with all the attendant privileges. And for what in return? To become “subjects of the King”? What a trade-off! We even have an inferior passport now! Blue, it may be; but inferior it is for sure!
