Trump’s $2bn Bonanza Heralds the Rise of Political Grifters across the West

THE GUARDIAN: With voters embracing leaders who brazenly monetise public office, experts say an ethical code is breaking down

Donald Trump came to office in 2017 after decades of bankruptcies and business failures. Yes, he was rich, but his latest financial disclosure, published this week, suggests he will depart billions richer.

In the first year of his second term, he made more than $2bn from Trump hotels, Trump golf courses, Trump cryptocurrency, Trump watches, Trump cologne, Trump Bibles and more.

That means Trump has accomplished something none of his predecessors achieved, at least not on this scale: transforming the American presidency into a moneymaking enterprise.

Politicians have always enriched themselves but the chutzpah with which Trump is doing so raises the possibility that an ethical code is breaking down. And not just in the US. Across the west, from Clacton to Queensland, a new type of leader is emerging: the political grifter.

Making public office a ticket to the high life while living standards fall might seem a hard sell to the electorate. Yet many voters seem prepared to put up with grifting, even happy to reward it.

Nigel Farage has traded on his fame and influence to become the best-paid MP at Westminster while maintaining an image as the champion of downtrodden Britons. He takes flights on the private jets of a billionaire benefactor, as does the Australian populist Pauline Hanson, who has repeatedly breached rules on declaring them.

“For decades, there was an implicit understanding that using public office for personal enrichment carried political and reputational risks,” says Tutu Alicante, a human rights lawyer based in the US and an expert in kleptocracy worldwide. “That restraint appears to be eroding.”

Alicante adds: “What feels different today is the brazenness.” The shift reminds him of places like his native Equatorial Guinea, where “corruption has become aspirational” as youngsters idolise the flashy kleptocrats who drive Lamborghinis and hang out with models.

“I worry we’re beginning to see echoes of the same phenomenon in parts of the west, where politicians who openly monetise public office – and the business figures and influencers who orbit them – are celebrated by some as symbols of success rather than cautionary tales.” » | Tom Burgis | Sunday, July 5, 2026

If Americans had had some spunk and balls, they would have incarcerated that orange, corrupt, slimeball long ago! The powers-that-be would have brought him down. Now, Trump will bring down the West instead. It seems as if the future may belong to Islam after all! No civilization can exist for long when it has lost its moral compass. This must surely be the start of the death of the West. Iranians have long chanted ‘Death to America’ (Marg bar Amrika). Perhaps the Iranians were more prescient than we ever gave them credit for. — © Mark Alexander

Michael Lambert: Trump Is Trapped as Midterms Approach

Jul 3, 2026 | Donald Trump is finding himself in an increasingly difficult corner as the midterm elections loom.

In this video, I look at how his foreign policy—from the escalating crisis in the Gulf to trade wars and beyond—is clashing with the harsh reality of a struggling economy, cost of living crisis and massive problems for millions of struggling Americans.

In the meantime, Trump is amassing fortunes for himself and his friends and seems obsessed with his legacy. But all is not well, and several recent setbacks suggest that his luck may be running out.

In this video I look at what will happen in the midterm elections and what Trump will do to avoid defeat.

That Australian article Mr Lambert read from was absolutely spot on. Brilliant, in fact. I am so looking forward to seeing the back of Trump and his chumps. I despise Trump and all he stands for. Trump's continuing existence is proving to me, once and for all, that God cannot possibly exist. For if He did, He would surely have taken him home by now! — © Mark Alexander

'Corruption Is the Only Word for This' | Andrew Neil on Donald Trump’s ‘Shameful’ Wealth

Jul 1, 2026 | “This is greed on a massive scale.”

The mandatory disclosure of the US President’s income shows that Trump’s presidency has “much more in common with a medieval court," proving that the American system of checks and balances are "totally incapable of doing anything about it", says Times Radio’s Andrew Neil.

Trump Raked in More than $1bn from Crypto Businesses in 2025, Filing Shows

THE GUARDIAN: President’s crypto ventures have eclipsed in revenue much of his property portfolio that took decades to accumulate

Donald Trump raked in more than $1bn from his crypto businesses last year, a federal filing released Monday shows, giving a substantial boost to his annual income.

In his second term, the president and his family have heavily invested in digital money and various crypto businesses with Trump announcing at the start of 2025 that he wanted the US to be the “crypto capital of the world”. Trump’s crypto earnings are in addition to profit from his legal settlements, real estate and royalty deals.

Many of the president’s crypto ventures were mere startups when he took the oath of office, but now have eclipsed in revenue much of his vast property portfolio that took decades to accumulate. This rise has been fueled by billionaire investors and Trump’s move to quash a federal crackdown on the industry. » | Dara Kerr and agencies | Wednesday, July 1, 2026

How can Americans stand idly by whilst this criminal enriches himself by using the White House and the Office of the Presidency as a private business venture and whilst he also raids the US treasury of billions in US tax revenues? Americans are clearly a very weak people.

What is also very bemusing is that there are so many thick Americans who actually believe that this crook has been sent to them by God to save their beloved dysfunctional hellhole! Go figure! — © Mark Alexander

Corey Brettschneider on Trump’s Blatant Destruction of the Constitution and Lessons from History

Jun 29, 2026 | Political scientist Corey Brettschneider joins Anthony Davis to discuss Trump’s blatant destruction of the Constitution, the Executive and the Judiciary - and how history teaches us that he is not the first President to seek a unitary style authoritarian government - only on The Weekend Show.

It astonishes me to observe how WEAK and SUBSERVIENT Americans are. They just lie down and play dead! I would have expected more SPUNK and DETERMINATION from them to put a stop to Trump’s CORRUPTION and DESTRUCTION of the POLITICAL SYSTEM and WAY OF LIFE. But Americans have turned out to be WEAKLINGS, satisfied for their country to be RAPED, PILLAGED, and PLUNDERED. It’s truly quite astonishing! — © Mark Alexander

Senator Chris Murphy Exposes 500 Days of Donald Trump's Corruption in Methodical Forensic Speech.

Jun 24, 2026 | Senator Chris Murphy took to the Senate floor to deliver a forceful speech accusing President Donald Trump of presiding over what he described as "500 days of corruption." Murphy outlined allegations of pay-to-play politics, conflicts of interest, controversial pardons, and the growing influence of wealthy donors, corporate interests, and foreign governments, arguing that the administration has repeatedly put private interests ahead of the public good. He also criticized Congress for failing to hold the White House sufficiently accountable. Watch Murphy's full speech as he presents his case, detailing the events and allegations he says have defined Trump's presidency and fueled an increasingly heated political debate in Washington.

America is as corrupt as corrupt can be! Why people look up to, and drool over, America is beyond my comprehension. The place STINKS of CORRUPTION! It stinks to high heaven! And America’s orange felon who has been elected and even re-elected to lead them REEKS of CORRUPTION, too! He belongs in PRISON. As I have said many times before, he should be put in an orange jumpsuit to match his FAKE TAN.

How Americans can elect and even re-elect such a man to lead them is mind-boggling. Americans deserve all they get for doing so; trouble is, we in the rest of the world, however, must suffer the fall-out. — © Mark Alexander

‘We Want a New Albania’: Protests against Jared Kushner-backed Resort Turn Anger on Government

This screenshot is from this Guardian article. | Thousands of people protesting outside the prime minister’s office in Tirana on Saturday. | Photograph: Vlasov Sulaj/Nur Photo/Shutterstock

THE GUARDIAN: Opposition to plans for ‘small paradise’ island of Sazan becomes wave of dissent against establishment

For Ina Shkurti, like so many Albanians, the island of Sazan has played an outsized role. As a child she bathed in its “always calm and emerald green” waters, as a teenager it figured in her dreams and as an adult it was an indelible part of the memory and desire that drew her back, every summer, to Vlore, her home town across the sea.

What Shkurti never imagined was that plans to build a mega-resort on Sazan – one of two luxurious complexes on Albania’s southern coast backed by Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner – would trigger a revolt, an uprising that has convulsed the Balkan state in a spasm of disgust over the perceived excesses of “a rotten oligarchic class” just as it hopes to complete accession talks with the EU.

“Am I outraged? Of course I am,” the cartographer said as the contours of the uninhabited outcrop came into view from a speedboat scudding towards its shores. “Sazan is our only island. It’s a small paradise that holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Albanians. Having some rich couple come in, develop it, and then deny us access, would be a crime.”

Not since the collapse of communism, more than three decades ago, has Albania been shaken by such collective fury. At 32, Shkurti, whose family emigrated to the US when she was 11, is typical of the tens of thousands, both in and outside the country, who have taken to the streets in what has become known as the “flamingo revolution” because of the threat posed by the proposed resorts to wildlife and delicate ecosystems on the sites.

“This government no longer represents us,” she said. “It has chosen to represent oligarch investors like Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. These protests are not going to stop, even if they’re no longer exclusively about them.”

Every day, she said, friends from Albania’s diaspora were flying in to join the rallies. In the biggest so far, thousands converged on Tirana at the weekend, many travelling from the US and other parts of Europe, to add their voices to the wave of dissent. » | Helena Smith in Vlore and Tirana | Monday, June 22, 2026

Michael Lambert: Kushner & Ivanka's $1.4 Billion Albania Land Grab | Trump Family First

Jun 12 , 2026 | When Ivanka Trump jumped off a friend's superyacht near Albania, she came back with more than a tan. She came back with a $1.4 billion development plan. This is the story of Ken and Barbie's Island — how Jared Kushner, bankrolled by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Gulf states, is attempting to turn Sazan Island, a former Russian military base of outstanding natural beauty, into an exclusive playground for the global elite.

In this video I cover:

• How the Albanian government secretly rushed through legislation to enable the sale
• The history of Sazan Island — and why destroying it matters
• The Albania protests that have rocked the country for over ten days
• Kushner's track record on similar projects in Serbia — and why it doesn't inspire confidence
• The criminal investigation launched by Albania's anti-corruption prosecutors (SPAK)

And I ask the obvious question: when the son-in-law of the most powerful man on earth comes knocking, just how much does Albanian democracy cost? This is a story about wealth, corruption, environmental destruction — and the extraordinary reach of Trump family power.

May 26, 2026 | US President Donald Trump's administration has announced the creation of a $1.776 billion fund for Americans deemed to be victims of political "weaponization," like January 6 Capitol riot defendants. But the announcement has brought in a lawsuit from a coalition of Trump critics adding to mounting backlash over the fund, seen as an additional act of corruption. Trump’s Breath-taking Corruption is Unlike Anything We’ve Ever Seen Before

May 22, 2026 | Trump’s crime spree continues—and it seems as if he’s going for a new high score. This week we learned about Trump’s hyperactive stock activity (and alleged attempts to manipulate markets to boost the value of companies he invested in) and got a first-hand look at how tinpot dictators bleed their countries dry after Trump announced his own IRS would pay $1.8 billion to insurrectionist criminals and refrain from ever auditing him or his crooked family ever again.

In this video we look at some of the ways Trump has used the office of the presidency to shamelessly enrich himself and his family.

Steve Schmidt: Trump's Corruption Will Drown America

May 20, 2026 | Donald Trump's corruption has become an open fire hydrant. Steve Schmidt breaks down Trump’s tax grift, Todd Blanche's contempt for the law, and warns it will continue until Americans make it stop.

Were America to be a person, one would say—with justification—that that person was committing slow suicide. But even though America is not a person, it can still be said to be committing suicide. Countries and empires can commit suicide, too. Especially when they enter self-destruct mode.

The US has enjoyed hegemonic status since 1945, since the end of World War II. This is because the war had destroyed the economies of Europe and of Asia, so America, relatively untouched as it was, was able to assume that pre-eminent role in the world. Especially because its GDP was equivalent of about the GDP of half of the rest of the world at that time, and especially because America possessed the strongest military. As a result, whenever the US commanded something, much of the rest of the world snapped to.

That was then; that was before the era of Trump. But this is now; and this is the era of Trump. So, everything has changed — for the worse. In a very short period of time, America has already started losing its pre-eminent position in the world. It is also in debt. Its debt is astronomical, standing as I write this at $39 trillion!

Trump is spending the nations’ money like a drunken sailor. He is engaged in an illegal and quite unnecessary war with Iran which has been costing the nation between one and two billion dollar a day! Trump insists that the federal government cannot afford universal healthcare for Americans, and nor can it afford to lift the millions of homeless poor out of their misery. But the nation can afford tax breaks for the superrich and it can afford to finance the killing machine. Such strange priorities for a country!

One doesn’t need a doctorate in rocket science to be able to say that this state of affairs is unsustainable. A nation, nay empire, that behaves in this corrupt, self-destructing manner will not be an empire for much longer. The shifting of hegemonic status will shift surely, but inexorably to the next emerging superpower.

We are living at a time of great, historic change. — © Mark Alexander

Democracy Now! "Dictatorship in Action": David Cay Johnston on $1.8 Billion Slush Fund

May 20, 2026 | In a shocking and unprecedented move, the Justice Department issued a memo Tuesday saying the IRS is "forever barred" from investigating past tax returns of President Trump, his family, company and "related companies." It came just a day after the department announced the creation of a $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund to "compensate" people prosecuted for supposedly political reasons by the Biden and Obama administrations — a move expected to benefit January 6 insurrectionists, other Trump allies and even Trump himself. It's all part of an agreement between the Department of Justice and President Trump's personal attorneys in exchange for Trump dropping a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS over leaked tax returns. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche — President Trump's former personal attorney — will appoint the commission overseeing the Justice Department's new fund.

"This is dictatorship in action," says reporter David Cay Johnston. He calls the "anti-weaponization" fund "a slush fund to pay a criminal enforcement arm, a violent arm of Trump supporters to intimidate people" and says the order to not investigate the Trump family's dealings "screams that Donald Trump is, in fact, a criminal-level tax cheat."

As I stated below: Trump’s presidency is nothing but a SHITSHOW! This slush fund underscores my point perfectly. — © Mark Alexander
