Als Anfang August die Stadt Faizabad im Nordosten Afghanistans fiel, zogen sie hinunter aus den Bergen. Die Uiguren und Tadschiken kamen in die Stadt. Jahrelang hatten diese Jihadisten versteckt gelebt, abgeschottet. Auch weil die Taliban nicht wollten, dass jemand sie entdeckt.

Seit Jahren kämpfen ausländische Jihadisten in Afghanistan an der Seite der Taliban. Die Terrorgruppe Kaida ist noch immer in Afghanistan aktiv, es ist ein nur schlecht gehütetes Geheimnis. Nun sind die Taliban zurück an der Macht. Und Afghanistan läuft Gefahr, wieder ein sicherer Hafen für jihadistische Terroristen zu werden.

2020 haben die USA und die Taliban ein Abkommen unterschrieben, es regelte die Bedingungen für den amerikanischen Truppenabzug. Eine davon: Die Taliban erlauben niemandem, die USA oder ihre Verbündeten von afghanischem Boden aus zu bedrohen. Das Abkommen verlangt von den Taliban nicht explizit einen Bruch mit der Kaida oder anderen Jihadisten – die Amerikaner hätten sich wohl einen solchen Passus gewünscht, aber die Taliban hätten kaum eingewilligt.

Das Abkommen gilt noch, auch nach der Eroberung Kabuls. Die Amerikaner pochen darauf, und die Taliban streiten seine Existenz zumindest nicht ab. In der ersten Pressekonferenz nach der Machtübernahme sagte ihr Sprecher Zabihullah Mujahid: «Ihr werdet von afghanischem Boden aus nicht verletzt werden», er richtete die Worte an die internationale Gemeinschaft. » | Franz J. WASHINGTON — As the Taliban attempt the precarious shift from insurgent movement to functioning government, Afghanistan is facing the heightened risk of a financial collapse after being propped up for the past two decades by foreign aid that now accounts for nearly half its legal economy.

The fate of the Afghan economy will be determined by decisions that the Biden administration and other countries must make on whether to recognize the Taliban as a legitimate government. In the meantime, the United States and the international community are already shutting the flow of money, leaving Afghanistan in the stranglehold of sanctions that were designed to cut the Taliban off from the global financial system. Analysts say the looming shock threatens to amplify a humanitarian crisis in a country that has already endured years of war.

Signs of strain were evident this week as the value of Afghanistan’s currency, the afghani, plunged to record lows and the nation’s most recent central bank governor, Ajmal Ahmady, warned that inflation would likely send food prices soaring. The United States, which has poured about $1 trillion into Afghanistan over 20 years, moved to block the Taliban’s access to Afghanistan’s $9.4 billion in international reserves. America’s Afghan War: A Defeat Foretold?

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Recent history suggests that it is foolish for Western powers to fight wars in other people’s lands and that the U.S. intervention was almost certainly doomed from the start.

It was 8 a.m. and the sleepy Afghan sergeant stood at what he called the front line, one month before the city of Kunduz fell to the Taliban. An unspoken agreement protected both sides. There would be no shooting.

That was the nature of the strange war the Afghans just fought, and lost, with the Taliban.

President Biden and his advisers say the Afghan military’s total collapse proved its unworthiness, vindicating the American pullout. But the extraordinary melting away of government and army, and the bloodless transition in most places so far, point to something more fundamental.

The war the Americans thought they were fighting against the Taliban was not the war their Afghan allies were fighting. That made the American war, like other such neocolonialist adventures, most likely doomed from the start.

Recent history shows it is foolish for Western powers to fight wars in other people’s lands, despite the temptations. Homegrown insurgencies, though seemingly outmatched in money, technology, arms, air power and the rest, are often better motivated, have a constant stream of new recruits, and often draw sustenance from just over the border.

Outside powers are fighting one war as visitors — occupiers — and their erstwhile allies who actually live there, something entirely different. In Afghanistan, it was not good versus evil, as the Americans saw it, but neighbor against neighbor.

When it comes to guerrilla war, Mao once described the relationship that should exist between a people and troops. “The former may be likened to water,” he wrote, “the latter to the fish who inhabit it.”

And when it came to Afghanistan, the Americans were a fish out of water. Just as the Russians had been in the 1980s. Just as the Americans were in Vietnam in the 1960s. And as the French were in Algeria in the 1950s. And the Portuguese during their futile attempts to keep their African colonies in the ’60s and ’70s. Europe! We’ll Be Back!

MARK ALEXANDER – ESSAY: Britain’s destiny lies in Europe. One day, we’ll be back. That is if our European brothers and sisters will accept us back and forgive us for our stupidity. We Brits are Europeans, whether inside or outside of the European Union. It is a historical, geographical, and geological fact. Nobody can deny that because it is undeniable.

Unfortunately, the British electorate was erroneously given a referendum on our membership of the European Union. They shouldn’t have been given the choice to leave in a referendum. Why? Because the issue was extremely complicated, so most people didn’t understand the complexities involved. Very few politicians in Parliament truly understood what was involved in our membership of the Union or the impact of leaving would have on our economy or standing in the world. So, if our parliamentarians didn’t understand what was at stake by leaving, how could we possibly have expected the man in the street to understand what was at stake?

The fact of the matter is simple and clear: The British electorate has been cheated and lied to. They were and still are being lied to apropos of this very important issue concerning Britain’s future and destiny.

But it is very important that we understand why the electorate were lied to, and by whom. They were lied to so that the squillionaire class could make lots of dosh, even more squillions, from our exit from the EU. The fact that by doing this, they stole the average man’s European rights away from him is of no interest, consequence, or importance to them. All they cared about was self-aggrandizement, lining their own pockets, and furthering their own careers. Their perspective? The electorate be damned! And these people have the audacity to call themselves patriots. Go figure!

The people who have stolen the British people’s European rights away from them—rights such as the right to set up a business in Europe, buy properties and homes in Europe, love across frontiers in Europe, receive universal and reciprocal healthcare, and much else besides—is of no consequence or importance to these fools. In any case, most of these self-serving clowns have never done a proper job in their lives. Most of them have been born with a silver spoon, nay golden spoon, in their mouths. Do you think they care about hard-working businessmen and businesswomen losing their businesses because of Brexit? Do you think they care about goods becoming more expensive and scarcer in the shops? Not at all! I doubt that even one of them knows the price of a pint/litre of milk!

These people are just playing around. Politics is all a game to them. They are not serious politicians at all. In fact, do they truly understand national politics, still less understand international politics? I know what I think. I will leave that question with you for you to make up your own minds.

As for being tied to America’s apron strings, I have this to say… We Brits are not Americans; rather, we are Europeans. We share a common ancestry with our brothers and sisters in Europe. Even our royal families are all related; they all have DNA in common. Queen Victoria, for example, was known as the “grandmother of Europe”! We Europeans share so much common ancestry.

As for America and Americans, of course we should be close to America and its people. Americans are our close friends and allies. It is right that they are; and they always will be. However, we can be far, far more useful to America and Americans inside the European Union that we can ever be outside of it. Inside the EU, we can be America’s English-speaking gateway to the continent. Outside of it, Britain is in danger of becoming an irrelevance.

So, I don’t know how long it will take for this folly of Brexit to play out; but I am as sure as anyone can be that one day, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, we Brits will come to realise the folly of our decision to leave you all. I hope that when the time comes, you will again give us the welcome you gave us the first time around. I, for one, feel European with every fibre of my being. I dream of a united Europe. Free and whole – a Europe with a shared common heritage. Vive l’Europe ! Es lebe Europa! Long live Europe!

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The effort to evacuate people from Afghanistan, hampered by mayhem in Kabul and delays in Washington, stood in sharp contrast to President Biden’s reassurances on Friday.

With thousands of people inside the Kabul airport waiting for flights and thousands more outside the walls trying — and usually failing — to get in, fear reigned among Afghans who feared being stranded in the country after the Taliban takeover.

The United States has rushed troops and diplomatic reinforcements to the airport in recent days to speed up visa processing for Afghans. American commanders are negotiating daily with their Taliban counterparts — the former insurgents they battled for nearly two decades — to ensure that evacuees can reach the airport.

But crowds are still waiting fearfully outside the airport gates, where Taliban soldiers have attacked people with sticks and rifle butts. THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Taliban have pledged that women in Afghanistan will have rights “within the bounds of Islamic law,” or Shariah, under their newly established rule. But it is not clear what that will mean.

Shariah leaves considerable room for interpretation. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan in the past, they imposed a strict one, barring women from working outside the home or leaving the house without a male guardian, eliminating schooling for girls, and publicly flogging people who violated the group’s morality code.

The insurgents have not yet said how they intend to apply it now. But millions of Afghan women fear a return to the past ways.

The Duke of York faces an “uphill struggle” to combat the impact of the sex offences allegations made against him and has already lost in the court of public opinion, leaving his reputation “highly tarnished” and a return to royal duties impossible, experts have said.

Following a damaging two weeks in which Andrew’s accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre lodged a civil lawsuit in New York alleging he had sex with her when she was 17, and a source claimed he was a “person of interest” in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, the duke is now caught “between a rock and a hard place,” said one expert.

There has been silence from Andrew – who denies all allegations against him – and his legal team over the latest twists in the long-running case. A day after Giuffre lodged her claims, he headed for Balmoral with his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York, in time for the opening of the grouse shooting season.

Buckingham Palace has consistently distanced itself from Andrew’s travails, referring any inquiries to the duke’s personal legal and PR teams. Farage redet im Interview mit dem ZDF auch darüber, welchen Einfluss US-amerikanische Berater für die Kampagne hatten. Steve Bannon, früherer Berater von US-Präsident Trump, war einer der wichtigen Berater in diesem Spiel.

Konkret geht es um millionenschwere Kredite, die die Pro-Brexit-Kampagne von Banks erhalten haben soll. Demnach stammte das Geld möglicherweise nicht von ihm selbst, sondern von Firmen mit Sitz auf der Isle of Man und in Gibraltar, die sich damit in den Wahlkampf eingemischt hätten. Mittlerweile ermittelt die National Crime Agency. Sie soll die bislang verschleierte Kampagnen-Finanzierung offenlegen.

Nigel Farage spricht im Interview mit dem "ZDFzoom"-Autor Dirk Laabs ganz offen darüber, wie eng die Lager zusammengearbeitet haben und wie wichtig auch der ehemalige Trump-Berater Steve Bannon für die Kampagne in Großbritannien war: "Zuvor hatte ich keinerlei Verbündete in den Medien, keine Stimme. Dann half uns Steve. Wenn Du plötzlich mehrere Stimmen auf Deiner Seite hast, ändert das alles."

Marina Haidari holen Kindheitserinnerungen ein. Eine davon stammt etwa aus dem Jahr 1997, als die Taliban erstmals in Afghanistan an der Macht waren. Damals beschallten sie ständig die Strassen mit furchteinflössenden Liedern aus Lautsprechern, die an ihren Trucks angebracht waren.

Kaum waren die Hymnen zu hören, verzogen sich alle in Windeseile in ihre Häuser und Wohnungen. Nur einmal war Marina schon fast beim Basar. Aus dem Nichts fuhr sie ein Taliban an und schlug ihr mit einer Peitsche auf die Wange. Ihr Vergehen? Sie trug keine Burka. Sie war noch keine 13 Jahre alt.

Heute ist Marina fast 37 Jahre alt. Sie müsse den Kopf schütteln, erzählt sie am Telefon, als mehrere ihrer jüngeren weiblichen Verwandten in ihrem Schlafzimmer erstmals eine Burka anprobieren. Die Taliban sind wieder in der Stadt, seit weniger als einer Woche, und die jungen Mädchen probieren dieses blaue, schwere Ungetüm von Verschleierungsstück aus diesem gerillten, plastikähnlichen Stoff. Hunted by the Taliban, U.S.-Allied Afghan Forces Are in Hiding

Thousands of Afghan security force members managed to make it to other countries over the past few weeks as the Taliban rapidly seized the country. Others managed to negotiate surrenders and went back to their homes — and some kept their weapons and joined the winning side.

They were all part of the sudden atomization of the national security forces that the United States and its allies spent tens of billions of dollars to arm, train and stand against the Taliban, a two-decade effort at institution-building that vanished in just a few days.

But tens of thousands of other Afghan grunts, commandos and spies who fought to the end, despite the talk in Washington that the Afghan forces simply gave up, have been left behind. They are now on the run, hiding and hunted by the Taliban.

“There’s no way out,” said Farid, an Afghan commando, in a text message to an American soldier who fought with him. Farid, who agreed to be identified by his first name only, said he was hiding in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, trapped after the regular army units surrendered around him. “I am praying to be saved.”

Steaks au poivre par Pierre-Dominique Cécillon pour Larousse Cuisine

Le steak au poivre est souvent servi dans les bistrots. Suivez les conseils du Chef !

POUR: 2 personnes | PRÉPARATION: 10 min | CUISSON: 6 à 8 min | Difficulté: Facile

Ingrédients :

* 2 steaks assez épais de 150 à 180 g chacun (rumsteck, entrecôte, tranche ou faux-filet)
* 4 cuill. à soupe de poivre noir concassé
* 20 g de beurre
* 3 cuill. à soupe d'huile de pépins de raisins
* 4 cuill. à soupe de cognac
* 20 cl de crème fraîche
* Sel

Préparation :

1. Salez les steaks sur les deux faces. Mettez le poivre concassé dans une assiette et passez-y chaque steak, une face après l'autre, en appuyant légèrement pour que les grains adhèrent bien à la viande.
2. Dans une poêle, faites chauffer le beurre et l'huile. Saisissez les steaks à feu vif, des deux côtés. Retirez les steaks de la poêle quand ils sont à la cuisson désirée.
3. Faites griller les grains de poivre restés dans la poêle, puis versez le cognac pour déglacer.
4. Ajoutez la crème dans la poêle, en remuant bien avec une spatule en bois et en grattant pour récupérer tous les sucs. Laissez épaissir la sauce à feu vif, jusqu'à l'ébullition : elle doit être un peu brune. Sortez du feu et nappez immédiatement les steaks.

INFO : Le mélange huile-beurre permet à la poêle d'être plus chaude, sans brûler le beurre.

Britain’s MPs this week uttered one long howl of anguish over Afghanistan. Their immediate targets were Joe Biden and Boris Johnson, politicians who just happened to be on the watch when Kabul’s pack of cards collapsed. But their real concern was that a collective 20-year experiment in “exporting western values” to Afghanistan had fallen into chaos. MPs wanted someone other than themselves to blame. A politician is never so angry as when proved wrong.

Like their fellow representatives in Congress, MPs somehow hoped the end would be nice and tidy, with speeches and flags, much like Britain’s exit from Hong Kong. Instead, tens of thousands of Afghans who had lived in an effective colony under years of Nato occupation had come to believe the west would either never leave or somehow protect them from Taliban retribution. LE FIGARO : RÉCIT - Malgré le discours lénifiant des talibans, nombre d’Afghans ayant côtoyé des Occidentaux craignent pour leur vie et cherchent encore à fuir.

Quelques jours seulement après être entrés dans Kaboul, les talibans ont tenu mardi leur première conférence de presse, après une première allocution accordée dès lundi à la chaîne qatarie al-Jazeera. «Après vingt années de combat nous avons émancipé le pays», assurait avec aplomb Zabihullah Mujahid, le porte-parole du mouvement, avant de préciser qu’il s’engageait à laisser les femmes travailler «dans le respect des principes de l’islam», sans d’autre précision.

À travers l’Afghanistan, les femmes ont pourtant déjà commencé à disparaître de l’espace public, et de nombreux témoignages émergent sur de nouvelles restrictions dont elles font l’objet: certaines auraient été refoulées de l’université d’Hérat, d’autres empêchées par des talibans d’accéder à l’aéroport de Kaboul, au motif qu’il ne serait pas moral de laisser une femme voyager seule. Malik Mudassir, un journaliste afghan de la BBC, racontait mardi l’étrange atmosphère régnant dans l’hôtel qu’il occupe à Kaboul. Les employés masculins ont arrêté de se raser ; le personnel féminin a disparu ; et la musique de fond, qui résonnait en permanence dans le lobby, s’est tue. Aug 18, 2021 • Millions of Afghans who lived through the 1990s remember the Taliban's harsh rules and governing style. But the armed group says - it has changed. As it gets ready to lead the country once again. In its first news conference since taking Kabul on Sunday, the Taliban promised to protect women's rights, give amnesty to those who worked with foreigners and respect media freedoms.

Its leaders also said they will not let other groups use Afghanistan to launch attacks on any country. And they've called on women and other minorities to join their government. But many Afghans and world leaders are skeptical. So, has the Taliban changed its ways?

Mar 31, 2020 • Mit seiner These, wonach die Mehrheit der Prälaten, Bischöfe und Kardinäle des Vatikans schwul seien, generierte der französische Soziologe und Journalist Frédéric Martel im Frühling 2019 viel Aufmerksamkeit, aber auch Unverständnis.

Sein Buch «Sodom» erschien zeitgleich in acht Sprachen und Martel wurde in unzählige Talkshows eingeladen, doch der Vatikan hüllte sich in Schweigen. Wer sich in den 30er-, 40er- und 50er-Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts als junger Mann irgendwie anders – eben homosexuell – fühlte, fand in der römisch-katholischen Kirche eine Oase, so Martel in seinem Buch «Sodom»: Männer, die unter Männern leben, andere Kleidung tragen und singen, das wäre für viele die Rettung gewesen, die zudem noch von der Gesellschaft akzeptiert war.

Gegen aussen seien diese in der Regel sehr alten Männer nun homophob, gegen innen aber homophil. Dies führe zu einer gefährlichen Doppelmoral, einer Kultur des Schweigens, die die Skandale rund um die katholische Kirche sehr unglücklich begünstigt hätten.

Crème brûlée par Pierre-Dominique Cécillon pour Larousse Cuisine

La crème brûlée est très rapide à préparer et reste un classique apprécié de tous !

Pour 6 personnes. | Difficulté : facile.

Ingredients :

35 cl de crème liquide,
1 gousse de vanille,
85 g de sucre semoule,
4 jaunes d'œufs

Préparation :

1.Versez la crème liquide dans une casserole.
2.Coupez la gousse de vanille en deux dans le sens de la longueur pour en extraire les graines. Ajoutez dans la casserole les graines et la gousse de vanille ainsi que la moitié du sucre. Faites chauffer à feu modéré pendant 5 minutes environ, jusqu'à ébullition, puis retirez la gousse de vanille.
3.Dans un saladier battez vigoureusement les jaunes d'œufs et le reste du sucre jusqu'à ce que le mélange blanchisse.
4.Versez la crème bouillante sur la préparation œufs-sucre, tout en remuant.
5.Remettez le mélange à chauffer dans la casserole, et laissez épaissir. Dès que la crème commence à bouillir, changez-la de récipient pour la refroidir.
6.Répartissez la crème dans des ramequins individuels, de préférence peu profonds. Laissez refroidir complètement au réfrigérateur pendant au moins 30 minutes.
7.Au moment de servir, préchauffez le gril du four.
8.Saupoudrez la surface des ramequins d'une bonne couche de sucre roux. Placez ceux-ci sous le gril.
9.Servez la crème brûlée tiède.

BBC: There is no other drink that represents Brazil more than the sugar cane spirit cachaça.

You visit a bustling bar with friends on a hot evening, and enjoy cold glasses of the country's national cocktail - caipirinha, a mixture of cachaça, sugar, and lime, with lots and lots of ice.

Or just as popular - you drink cachaça neat, downing shots to toast your companions.

Yet like the nation as a whole, the spirit has had a difficult pandemic.

With bars and restaurants across Brazil closed for long periods since last spring and households not allowed to mix, sales slumped by almost a quarter in 2020.

Producers and industry leaders now hope to boost overseas orders of cachaça, in order to compensate. But as Luciano Sadi Andrade, marketing manager at distillers Companhia Müller de Bebidas, admits: "It has always been a challenge... to explain the concept of cachaça for the foreign market."

So what exactly is cachaça? Pronounced "ka-SHAS-sa", it is distilled from sugar cane juice. This, Brazil says, makes it different to rum, which is typically made from the molasses, or thick treacle, left over after sugar cane has been processed into sugar.

In Ghana hat sich die Situation queerer Menschen in den vergangenen Monaten weiter verschlechtert: Nachdem im Februar das einzige queere Zentrum in Accra von der Polizei gestürmt wurden, waren Mitglieder der Organisation LGBT+Rights Ghana im Internet und auf offener Straße massiven Anfeindungen ausgesetzt.

Einige mussten zwischenzeitlich die Stadt verlassen und sich verstecken. Im Mai wurden dann Teilnehmer*innen einer LSBTI Konferenz verhaftet und über Wochen inhaftiert. Wie LGBT+ Rights Ghana berichtete, wurde das Verfahren mittlerweile eingestellt, doch nun droht die nächste Gefahr.

Gesetzentwurf sieht weitere Kriminalisierung vor

Mittlerweile plant das Parlament ein Gesetz, was zur weiteren Kriminalisierung queerer Menschen beitragen und die Lage massiv verschärfen würde.

Sollte der Gesetzentwurf tatsächlich beschlossen werden, würde das bedeuten, dass queere Personen mit bis zu fünf Jahren Gefängnis bestraft werden könnten. Drei Tage waren seit den Terroranschlägen vom 11. September 2001 vergangen. Die demokratische Abgeordnete Barbara Lee nahm wie fast alle anderen Kongressabgeordneten an einem Gedenkgottesdienst in der Washington National Cathedral teil. Wie sie später erzählte, hatte sie sich bis zu jenem Morgen den Kopf darüber zerbrochen, wie sie über das Gesetz Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF) (deutsch: Genehmigung zum Einsatz militärischer Gewalt) stimmen sollte. Das Gesetz, das eine Antwort auf die Anschläge auf die Twin Towers war, würde dem damaligen Präsidenten George Bush die Erlaubnis erteilen, im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus die Streitkräfte einzusetzen.

Doch als Lee das Gebet des Pfarrers Nathan Baxter hörte, war ihre Entscheidung gefallen, wie die «Washington Post» schreibt. Als die Abgeordnete später im Repräsentantenhaus ihr Votum gegen die Resolution begründete, zitierte sie die inspirierenden Worte des Geistlichen: «Wenn wir handeln, sollten wir nicht zu dem Bösen werden, das wir beklagen.» Trotz ihrer Rede blieb Lee die Einzige, die gegen eine militärische Intervention in Afghanistan stimmte. Die Abstimmung im Repräsentantenhaus fiel mit 420 zu 1 Stimme aus, im Senat mit 98 zu 0. Eine Journalistin der britischen BBC muss Moskau verlassen – und das russische Aussenministerium tritt nach: Dessen Sprecherin warf der britischen Sendeanstalt am Samstag die «Verbreitung von Desinformation» und von «russophoben Klischees» vor, nachdem die BBC die Ausweisung von Sarah Rainsford kritisiert hatte.

Das Visum der Korrespondentin läuft Ende des Monats aus und wird nicht verlängert. Während der Kreml seit Monaten immer mehr unabhängige russische Journalisten mit Repressionen belegt, sind ausländische Korrespondenten bisher weitgehend verschont geblieben.

Man kann den Rauswurf von Rainsford daher als Einschnitt betrachten. Le dirigeant actuel des talibans est le mollah Haibatullah Akhundzada. Il commande le mouvement depuis mai 2016 et fonde sa légitimité sur sa crédibilité en matière religieuse.

À 60 ans, ce juriste pourrait devenir l’autorité religieuse suprême au sein du nouvel émirat islamique d’Afghanistan. Originaire de la province de Kandahar, terre natale du mouvement, ce Pachtoune discret a combattu les Soviétiques dans les années 1980 avec d’autres étudiants religieux de la région qui viendront par la suite constituer le noyau dur du mouvement taliban.

Plus tard, Akhundzada devient le principal conseiller religieux du mollah Omar. Après la prise de Kaboul en 1996, il préside des tribunaux islamiques puis acquiert le poste de ministre régional pour la promotion de la vertu et la répression du vice.

Après 2001, il devient un juge religieux respecté. As the Taliban sought to consolidate control over Afghanistan on Wednesday, they faced the first challenges to their renewed rule, using force to break up protests in at least two cities, while an opposing faction vowed to hold out in one pocket of the country.

Millions of Afghans tried to parse conflicting clues about what lay in store for them and their nation, but many were not waiting to find out.

Despite Taliban assurances that there would be no reprisals against their opponents, thousands of people continued to crowd around the airport in Kabul, the capital, hoping to get a flight out of the country. Throngs rushed toward certain entrances, only to be met by Taliban troops who beat people back and fired their rifles into the air. A NATO official at the scene said 17 people were injured.

Taliban fighters used gunfire to disperse demonstrations in the northeastern city of Jalalabad and the southeastern city of Khost, with some of the protesters raising the Afghan government flags that the Taliban had taken down just days earlier. Le bilan de l'incendie qui ravage depuis le début de la semaine la réserve naturelle de la plaine des Maures s'est alourdi, mercredi en fin d'après-midi, à deux morts et vingt-quatre blessés légers, dont dix-neuf pour des intoxications, a annoncé le préfet du Var, Evence Richard. « Il y a au moins un homme » parmi les deux victimes, a-t-il précisé lors d'une conférence de presse. Après la découverte de deux corps entièrement calcinés à Grimaud, un village dans le massif des Maures, le parquet de Draguignan a ouvert une enquête. « Le logement a été entièrement détruit par le feu », a précisé le procureur, Patrice Camberou.

Selon plusieurs proches d'une jeune femme portée disparue depuis lundi soir alors qu'elle séjournait dans un gîte à Grimaud, la seconde victime serait bien cette touriste francilienne de 32 ans. Son frère et une amie confirmaient mercredi soir sur les réseaux sociaux son décès. Contacté par l'AFP, le procureur de Draguignan, Patrice Camberou, n'a pas pu confirmer cette information, le corps n'ayant pas été encore formellement identifié: «Mais cette hypothèse est très très fortement plausible», a-t-il cependant déclaré. A Message to You, My Followers and Esteemed Visitors

First of all I should like to thank you all kindly for all your support. Your support means the world to me. It is difficult to express in words what it means to me and how much pleasure it brings me each day. A big thank you to you all for it!

I trust that you are enjoying the blog’s content. I hope and trust that you like the changes I am making to it. My aim is to please you, my valued followers and visitors.

By now, I feel that sure you must be asking yourselves some questions about me, about who I am and where I stand on the political spectrum. I feel that the time has come to give you at least some idea about me and my place on the political spectrum. It is only fair that I do so.

Politically, I am rather moderate. I am neither right nor left. I am somewhere in the middle. Perhaps slightly to the right of centre, but only slightly so. I abhor extremism in all its forms, either in action or deed, and certainly in politics. (I have an aversion to showiness.) In fact, I rather dislike classifying myself as either right or left: I take each issue on its merit. So I can be more to the right on some issues and more to the left on others.

I believe in tolerance; and I believe in compassion for the less fortunate in society. However, I understand that business needs to be given the chance to grow and thrive. Without a successful commercial base, we are nothing and can do nothing to help the less fortunate.

As you are now well-aware, I am gay. But my lifestyle is anything but gay, actually. Humdrum would, perhaps, be a more accurate description! I lead a very quiet life in a relatively small town. I do not frequent bars, and I have never frequented gay bars, and nor have I have never ever engaged in cruising. My life is ‘normal’ in every sense of that word.

My interests are broad: I love international politics, languages, reading in various languages, cooking and cookery, fashion, beauty in all its forms, and refinement in all its forms, too. Good food and wines and spirits have always been a part of my existence; but only ever in moderation. I actually care for my health as best I can, but that doesn’t mean that I enjoy none of the pleasures this life has to offer. Further, I hope that the best years are yet and still ahead of me. The best is yet to come! I am still searching for my Eden.

I love France and all things French; and I love Switzerland and all things Swiss. (Naturally, I love other countries too.) Indeed, I spent four of the finest years of my life in Zürich. It is because of that time I spent there that I am as fluent as I am in German today. Switzerland is a fine country, as are its people. When I left Switzerland something of Switzerland remained in my heart. I think that God must have created Switzerland as beautiful as it is to remind us of Paradise. He must have wanted Switzerland to be a taster of what awaits us!

I think I have probably told you enough about myself for now. I shall probably say more later. But I think that suffices for the time being.

Boris Johnson has faced anger from MPs about the UK’s failure to prepare for the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, as he made the case that Britain could not have stayed in the country “without American might”.

The prime minister said a military defence of Afghanistan by the west was not possible in the absence of Washington’s support.

“I do not believe deploying tens of thousands of British troops to fight the Taliban is an option that would commend itself to the British people or this house,” he said, opening a debate in the House of Commons.

However, his position was quickly challenged by a number of high-profile Conservatives, including the former prime minister Theresa May, former defence minister Tobias Ellwood and former chief whip Mark Harper.

May pressed Johnson on whether he had spoken to the Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, about the “possibility of alliance of other forces” in order to replace American troops. The prime minister only replied that he had spoken to Stoltenberg in the last few days.

This Conservative government is not fit for purpose. Boris Johnson is the worst Conservative prime minister we've had in my lifetime. The man is a Trump clone – in other words, a clown! He is ill-suited to the job of prime minister, despite his so-called first-class edducation. The problem lies in the man, not in his education. The Conservative Party has had a long and proud tradition of providing this nation with prime ministers of a very high calbre. It grieves me to have to say this, but Boris Johnson doesn't fit that mould. He is unserious, self-serving and given to buffoonery. For God's sake, let's elect a decent prime minister to lead this country. This country needs to return to the European Union. Our destiny lies in Europe and with our European brethren, not somewhere out in the Atlantic, on a dinghy, on the high seas, trying to make Britain 'global', whatever the clown means by that? Whenever was Britain not global anyway? Britain's proud and long history is nothing if not global. And wasn't Britain global enough for the tw*t (fill in the vowel of your choice!) while we were members of the European Union? Enough of this clowning around! Let us get back to some serious politics. Let us re-locate our true place in the world: in Europe. – © Mark

Aug 18, 2021 • “The only thing more tragic than what’s happened to the Afghan people is that in a few days America will have forgotten Afghanistan again,” says Matthew Hoh, a disabled combat veteran and former State Department official stationed in Afghanistan’s Zabul province who resigned in 2009 to protest the Obama administration’s escalation of the War in Afghanistan. He says much of the U.S. media coverage has been filled with “complete lies and fabrications,” despite decades of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. “You see the same people who’ve been wrong about this war trotted out over and over again,” says Hoh, a senior fellow with the Center for International Policy.
