What to Do about the Growth of Islam in the West

There is no doubt about it that many people are uneasy about the explosive expansion of Islam in the West. Unfortunately, however, too many people are still unaware of this expansion, and even where they are, they are so lacking in knowledge about what Islam really is about that they do not see the dangers it poses. We are sleepwalking into our own demise!

Our leaders do not help this situation since they usually prattle on about how 'true' Islam has nothing to do with the distorted and 'evil' ideology as proposed by Al Qaeda and their ilk. The fact of the matter is, though, that what Al Qaeda preaches is actually the real thing: Islam, not Islam-lite. There is only one Islam anyway; and that, if it continues to grow in the West, will be the death knell of our civilization.

Our politicians, by and large, are frightened of what they see happening, and are generally clueless as to what to do about it. Truth is, however, that we have to decide what is more important to us: Our liberty, or their feelings! If we decide that our liberty is more important to us - which I would hope - then we have to be prepared to take the necessary tough decisions to ensure our own survival, for we will not be able to ensure our own survival without taking them. As Mrs Thatcher used to say: The tough decisions are usually the best ones.

I don't see this happening in the present climate, because there are too many 'bleeding hearts' around for the politicians to have the backing of the electorate to carry out the necessary Draconian measures. But this could all change if there were another major catastrophe. People's memories of the tragedy of 9/11 are already fading, it is sad to say. If another tragedy such as this, or even worse, happened, then we need strong leadership in place to act there and then.

It's rather like punishing a child for wrong-doing: to be effective, it has to be carried out there and then. Waiting a few days and then punishing the child has little or no effect, since the child doesn't know what it is being punished for! The same goes for Muslims. Life has to be made uncomfortable for them when these tragedies occur, and they have to be placed on the defensive. They should not be let off the hook by our liberal and pathetically weak politicians.

To be more concrete in my answer to your question, I should like to say the following:

The heads of state and heads of government need to meet periodically to recognize the problem, and to devise a strategy, and work together, as one. As we all know, there is strength in unity.

Illegal immigrants should be returned to their homelands. There are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the West. They have no right to be here. Getting rid of them would go a long way to shrink the Muslim population of the West, and it would help demographics. Over the years, waves of illegal immigrants have been allowed to put down roots here in Europe (in my book, I call this phenomenon 'the Crescades'). They are allowed to stay, and then, some years later, when they have found their feet, they start dictating to us what they want, and how they want it! This must stop!

We need to define, precisely, what we mean by the word religion. This may sound strange, but we so often hear that we have, and must maintain, freedom of religion in the West. But the fact of the matter is that we have yet to define what we mean by religion. Are Rastafarians and Wiccans distinct religious groups? Is Islam truly a religion as we understand a religion to be, or is it - as I would maintain - more of a political ideology?

To Westerners, religion usually means something spiritual, a belief system which encourages peace, tolerance, mutual respect, and mutual understanding. Islam scores badly on all these counts.

How much of Islam is spiritual, and how much political? If, upon investigation, it is found, as I believe, that Islam is 90% political ideology, then are we obliged to give it the freedom to grow in the West as we do to, say, Buddhism? After all, we close down many other political ideologies which we find a threat to our liberty. Why not Islam, too? Just clothing the political ideology in a deity does not make it less of a threat to our way of life. Islam gives a 'divine' imprimatur to the killing of their enemies, and killing those who do not subscribe to their viewpoint.

These are awkward, uncomfortable questions to answer, I know. But they do need to be answered if we are to save ourselves. Perhaps, when all is said and done, we shall be able to allow only the spiritual part of Islam, but make the political aspect illegal. That would make life uncomfortable for Muslims. Many, perhaps, would then move on to where they would be freer to do their thing.

Returning these people to their land of origin in a humane fashion may be an option to consider, too. So much taxpayers' money is now being spent on policing these people that maybe that money would be better spent paying them a lump sum to leave. To continue to spend all that taxpayers' money to police them is ludicrous; indeed, when the numbers of Muslims in the West swell even more, it will become impossible for us to afford to do it.

Muslims need to be told, firmly, how the land lies here in the West. They should be told that they must blend in and live according to our rules, or they must leave. They should be told that they must abandon all designs on Islamizing the system; and if they cannot, then they are not welcome here any longer. We are not obliged to allow them to talk in a subversive manner about the overthrow of the system. Why should we allow this?

All monies coming in from the Middle East to build mosques and schools and centres of Islamic propagation should cease forthwith. It is senseless to allow that money into our countries. After all, it's a one-way system. They don't allow our money into their countries to propagate Christianity, or from anywhere else to propagate other religions, either.

Our governments need to encourage families to have more babies. Tax and fiscal policy should change to encourage bigger families. No civilization can survive without an adequate supply of babies. Indeed, that is one of the main reasons why civilizations decline!

All mosques where it is found that hatred or anti-Semitism is preached should be closed down with immediate effect, and never to be allowed to re-open.

All Islamic schools should be closed. In any case, they are madrasahs in all but name. It is absurd to allow them to open in the West; it is even more absurd to encourage them, à la Blair!

All immigration from Muslim countries should cease forthwith, for to continue to allow such immigration is tantamount to shoring up even more problems for ourselves for the future.

This list is by far not exhaustive. But it's a start.

Pakistan Taleban Take Over Towns as They Move Closer to Islamabad

TIMESONLINE: The Taleban seized towns less than 65 miles from Pakistan’s capital yesterday, renewing fears that Islamabad’s recent peace deal with the radicals would only accelerate their advance across the country.

The peace accord had already drawn harsh criticism from Pakistan’s Western allies. “I think that the Pakistani Government is basically abdicating to the Taleban and to the extremists,” Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of States, said yesterday. She added that the situation in Pakistan “poses a mortal threat to the security of our country and the world”.

Mrs Clinton gave her gloomy assessment to the US Congress shortly after hundreds of Taleban fighters occupied government buildings in the district of Buner, ransacking the offices of international aid agencies and taking away vehicles, computers and other equipment. Some employees were also taken hostage briefly.

The militants, carrying rocket launchers and machineguns, also set up checkpoints to search vehicles as many residents fled the area. Local security forces remained confined to police stations and camps.

The fundamentalist movement struck a peace deal with Islamabad recently after a terror campaign in the neighbouring Swat Valley. Under the agreement the militants were allowed to establish an Islamist administration and Sharia courts. In return it was supposed to disarm but has failed to do so. >>> Zahid Hussain in Mingora | Thursday, April 23, 2009
Fidel's Words Cool US-Cuba Hopes

BBC: Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro says President Barack Obama misinterpreted recent comments by his brother Raul about a possible thaw in US-Cuba ties.

President Raul Castro said last week Cuba was ready to discuss "everything".

Mr Obama responded by saying the US sought new ties with Cuba but linked progress to advances in human rights and the freeing of political prisoners.

In an essay on a government website, Fidel Castro suggested it was up to the US not Cuba to change to improve ties.

"Without doubt, President [Obama] misinterpreted Raul's declaration," Fidel Castro wrote in an article on the CubaDebate website.

Raul Castro's offer "to broach any subject", the article said, was meant to show "courage and confidence in the principles of the revolution".

Correspondents say Fidel Castro appears to be trying to dampen expectations of a possible improvement in ties, by suggesting that too much has been read into Raul's offer to discuss everything. >>> | Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Budget 2009: Gordon Brown Declares Class War with Tax on High Earners

THE TELEGRAPH: Gordon Brown has been accused of launching a "class war" against Middle Britain as he introduced a new 50 per cent top rate of tax to make the wealthy pay for the catastrophic state of public finances.

Casting aside more than a decade of New Labour ideology, the government broke a key election manifesto promise by announcing an increase in income tax for those earning more than £150,000.

Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, also announced that the highest earners will lose valuable tax breaks on pension savings, as part of a package of measures that will see the tax grab from high earners raising up to £5.5 billion a year - an average of £18,333 annually per person.

The surprise new measures - which mean Britain will have the highest top rate of any major economy in the developed world - came as Mr Darling was forced to lay bare the true extent of Britain's levels of borrowing in his Budget.

In the worst economic forecast since the Second World War, he said he planned to borrow another £700 billion over the next five years, taking the national debt to £1.4 trillion.

Mr Brown and Mr Darling were accused of indulging in party politics at a time of national crisis by seeking to exploit the divide the Tories' on tax policy.

It was also suggested that the Prime Minister was returning to Old Labour policies designed to shore up Labour's core vote ahead of an election next year that he is on course to lose.

Labour MPs in the party's heartlands will welcome the move and ministers will argue that taxing those on very high salaries is popular among many voters.

But in raising the top rate of tax the government risk alienating the middle class voters that swept Tony Blair to power in 1997. >>> By Andrew Porter, Political Editor | Thursday, April 23, 2009

Talibanisation of Pakistan a Reality, Warns Pakistani Media

SINDH TODAY: Islamabad – (IANS) The Talibanisation of Pakistan is not just a threat but a reality in the wake of Sharia laws being imposed in Swat and other parts of the country’s northwest, an editorial in a leading English daily said Wednesday.

Another editorial termed the Nizam-e Adil Regulation parliament passed to impose the Sharia an anathema on the constitution.

“Talibanisation is not just a threat, it is the reality today. Face it,” Dawn said in an editorial.

“There is considerable harm in it because such a regulation is anathema to the Constitution and shouldn’t have been acceded to and drawn up in the first place by the government,” The News maintained.

Dawn said it was “now clear” that the Taliban will not stop until they have their way.

“And this is their prescription for Pakistan: a nation, armed with nuclear weapons, jerked back to a mediaeval age. A country where men without beards are flogged, and women killed if they choose to express themselves.

“That is where we are headed. And one is wrong if one thinks this can’t happen in Pakistan. It can and it will unless we strike a decisive blow for the silent majority,” the editorial maintained.

“We must resist this onslaught,” it added. >>> By Sindh Today | Wednesday, April 22, 2009

DAWN: Pakistan Giving Up to Militants: Hillary

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday she believed the Pakistani government was abdicating to the Taliban and other militants.

In a testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Mrs Clinton warned that nuclear-armed Pakistan was becoming a ‘mortal threat’ to the world.

‘I think that the Pakistani government is basically abdicating to the Taliban and to the extremists,’ Mrs Clinton said.

She was referring to a deal Pakistan concluded with the Taliban militants in Swat, which gives them complete control over the valley. On Tuesday, the militants also took over Buner, just 60 miles from Islamabad.

Mrs Clinton also urged Pakistanis, living both in and outside the country, to realise how terrorism threatened the very existence of their state.

‘Pakistan poses a mortal threat to the security and safety of our country and the world,’ Mrs Clinton said.

‘And I want to take this occasion ... to state unequivocally that not only do the Pakistani government officials, but the Pakistani people and the Pakistani diaspora ... need to speak out forcefully against a policy that is ceding more and more territory to the insurgents.’

Mrs Clinton said the Pakistani government had to deliver basic services to its people or it would find itself losing ground to the Taliban, whose influence had spread in northern Pakistan and had raised concerns about the stability of the country.

‘The government of Pakistan ... must begin to deliver government services, otherwise they are going to lose out to those who show up and claim that they can solve people’s problems and then they will impose this harsh form of oppression on women and others,’ she said. >>> By Dawn’s Correspondent | Thursday, April 23, 2009

Yemeni Woman Faces Execution Following Political Interference in Her Case

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: A Yemeni woman is facing imminent execution accused of killing her husband. Fatima Hussein-Badi was convicted of murder in 2001 and faces the death penalty despite a court ruling in 2003 that she did not take part in the killing.

There is mounting fear for her life following the execution of another woman for similar charges on Sunday. 'Aisha Ghalib al-Hamzi was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband in October 2003 and her sentence was confirmed on appeal in 2007.

In December 2008, the Supreme Court in Sana’a upheld the death sentence and it was ratified by the President. 'Aisha Ghalib al-Hamzi was executed after relatives of her husband, including her seven children, refused to pardon her.

Under the Shari’a rule of Qisas (retribution in kind), relatives of the victims of certain categories of murder have the power to pardon the offender in exchange for compensation (blood money), grant a pardon freely or request his or her execution.

Amnesty International condemned the execution of 'Aisha Ghalib al-Hamzi and has called on the Yemeni authorities not to execute Fatima Hussein-Badi and to halt all other executions immediately. The organization opposes the death penalty unconditionally in all situations as a violation of the right to life and the ultimate cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment. >>> © Amnesty International | Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Gary Bauer: What Are US Students Learning about Islam?

THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR: Politically correct textbooks are distorting key concepts and historical facts.

WASHINGTON - "History is not history unless it is the truth." – Abraham Lincoln

Most Americans understand history as an objective accounting of past events. In recent years, however, textbook publishers have come under increasing criticism for rewriting history. Claims are presented as facts while controversial material is whitewashed or omitted.

Today these trends are quite apparent in the way public school history books address Islam. In his 2008 study "Islam in the Classroom: what the textbooks tell us," Gilbert Sewall, director of the American Textbook Council (ATC), reviewed 10 of the nation's most widely used junior and senior high school history textbooks. The results should disturb anyone interested in conveying to our children a truthful history of the religion whose extreme adherents drive so many of today's tragic headlines.

At a time when America is locked in a battle of ideas with Islamic extremists and other enemies of freedom, accurate knowledge is indispensable. Yet, Sewall's findings underscore how political correctness is distorting the next generation's understanding of this battle.

Let's be clear. Religion is by nature a sensitive topic to teach in the classroom. And in a world where stereotypes wrongly tar all Muslims as being prone to violence, it's understandable that schools would err on the side of caution. Indeed, they should affirm the piety and charity practiced by hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world, an acknowledgement that should be extended to Christians as well. At the same time, textbooks shouldn't cower from covering the violent periods of Muslim conquest or the Islamic beliefs that fundamentalists exploit for violent ends.

Sewall found that many textbooks gloss over or delete important facts. For example, in the 1990s, "jihad" – which has many meanings, among them "sacred" or "holy" struggle but also "holy war" – was defined in the Houghton Mifflin junior high school book only as a struggle "to do one's best to resist temptation and overcome evil."

The many acts of violence committed on behalf of Islam in the past decade have made that definition incomplete, to say the least. Yet, as ATC notes, "by 2005, Houghton Mifflin apparently had removed jihad from its entire series of social studies textbooks." >>> Gary Bauer* | Wednesday, April 22, 2009

New Dark Age Alert! Muslim Converts Accused of Holy War Bomb Plots

TIMESONLINE: Two Muslim converts and two Turks go on trial in a bomb-proof courtroom in Düsseldorf today accused of plotting to blow up German civilians and US soldiers.

“The world will burn!” boasted an intercepted e-mail sent between the accused, who are alleged to have wanted to wage an Islamic holy war in the heart of Europe.

Three of the men — Fritz Gelowicz, 29, Daniel Schneider, 23 and the Turkish national Adem Yilmaz, 30 — are accused of attending a training camp on the Afghan-Pakistani frontier run by an Uzbek-based terror organisation known as the Islamic Jihad Union.

Intelligence services say that it has links with al-Qaeda. Using detonators — supplied, the state prosecutor claims, by Attila Selek, 24, a German citizen of Turkish origin — the gang prepared bombs with the explosive force of 410kg (904lb) of TNT, to be set off in and around the US Ramstein air base and other targets. The bombers in London on July 7, 2005, had 4kg of explosive.

It is alleged that the gang wanted the attacks to influence a parliamentary debate extending the mandate of the German Army in Afghanistan in the autumn of 2007. >>> Roger Boyes in Berlin | Wednesday, April 22, 2009

TIMESONLINE: Hillary Clinton today vigorously defended President Obama’s recent overtures to Iran, insisting that the US would be in a better position to organise “crippling” international sanctions should diplomacy fail.

Giving her first congressional testimony on US foreign policy since becoming Secretary of State, Mrs Clinton said stopping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon was one of the Obama administration’s highest priorities.

“We actually believe that by following the diplomatic path we are on, we gain credibility and influence with a number of nations who would have to participate in order to make the sanctions regime as tight and as crippling as we would want it to be,” Mrs Clinton told the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“We know the imperative of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons,” she added. “After years during which the United States basically sat on the sidelines, we are now a full partner” in international talks with Iran.

Iran said today that it welcomed “constructive” talks with world powers and the US, but added that it would press ahead with its programme to develop atomic energy. >>> Tim Reid in Washington | Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Vatican Planned to Move to Portugal If Nazis Captured Wartime Pope

Photobucket
Pope Pius XII. Photo: GoogleImages

THE TELEGRAPH: Secret plans were drawn up by the Vatican to elect a new Pope and flee to a friendly country should Hitler have carried out his threat to kidnap the wartime Pontiff, it was claimed yesterday.

Pope Pius XII told senior bishops that should he be arrested by the Nazis, his resignation would become effective immediately, paving the way for a successor, according to documents in the Vatican's Secret Archives.

The bishops would then be expected to flee to a safe country – probably neutral Portugal – where they would re-establish the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church and appoint a new Pontiff.

That Hitler considered kidnapping the Pope has been documented before, but this is the first time that details have emerged of the Vatican's strategy should the Nazis carry out the plan.

"Pius said 'if they want to arrest me they will have to drag me from the Vatican'," said Peter Gumpel, the German Jesuit priest who is in charge of researching whether Pius should be made a saint, and therefore has access to secret Vatican archives.

Pius, who was Pope throughout the war, told his advisers "the person who would leave the [Vatican] under these conditions would not be Pius XII but Eugenio Pacelli" – his name before he was elected Pontiff – thus giving permission for a new Pope to be elected.

"It would have been disastrous if the Church had been left without an authoritative leader," said Father Gumpel.

"Pius wouldn't leave voluntarily. He had been invited repeatedly to go to Portugal or Spain or the United States but he felt he could not leave his diocese under these severe and tragic circumstances." Vatican documents, which still remain secret, are believed to show that Pius was aware of a plan formulated by Hitler in July 1943 to occupy the Vatican and arrest him and his senior cardinals. >>> By Nick Squires in Rome and Simon Caldwell | Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Israelis Feel Chill as US Sets Out New Ground Rules

BRISBANE TIMES: CAN Israel still call the United States its best friend? Not if you believe the media in Israel.

The increasingly tense dialogue between the US President, Barack Obama, and the new Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has taken on all the trappings of a duel here.

Almost every day brings news of another sore point, blighting the once warm relationship between the two countries.

Anyone could be forgiven for thinking the most immediate threat to national security in Israel lay across the Atlantic. That Mr Obama uses almost every opportunity he gets to set the parameters of a final peace agreement between Israel and Palestine is bad enough.

But now officials in his administration are openly using Israeli anxiety at Iran's nuclear program as a bargaining chip to force its hand on giving up control of the West Bank Palestinian territory.

No less a figure than the White House chief-of-staff, Rahm Emanuel, was quoted this week laying down the law: if Israel wants US help to defuse the Iranian threat, then get ready to start evacuating settlements in the West Bank, he was reported to have told Jewish leaders in Washington. >>> Jason Koutsoukis Herald Correspondent in Jerusalem | Saturday, April 18, 2009
Iran May Ease American Reporter's Sentence

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran may reconsider an eight-year jail term for an American journalist during her appeal, the judiciary spokesman said Tuesday in an indication her sentence will be commuted.

The statement was the latest hint Iran could be backing off from the imprisonment of 31-year-old Roxana Saberi on charges of spying for the U.S. On Monday, the judiciary chief ordered a full investigation into the case, a day after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged Tehran's chief prosecutor to ensure Ms. Saberi be allowed a full defense during her appeal.

The case has been a source of tension with the U.S. at a time when President Barack Obama is trying to open a dialogue with Iran to end a decades-long diplomatic standoff. The U.S. has called the accusations against Ms. Saberi, a dual American-Iranian citizen, baseless and demanded her release. >>> Associated Press | Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Dick Cheney Demands Barack Obama Reveals Torture 'Success' Memos

TIMESONLINE: Dick Cheney has asked for secret US documents to be released showing that harsh CIA interrogation techniques such as waterboarding produced valuable intelligence.

The former US Vice President used an interview with FOX News to step into the row that has developed since President Obama ordered the publication of Bush administration legal memos justifying practices which are condemned in many parts of the world as torture.

Mr Cheney said that he had made a formal request to the CIA for the documents be declassified because he knew that the interrogation process - now banned by Mr Obama - had been very successful, and he wanted the rest of the country to understand.

The additional documents had to be made public to allow an "honest debate", Mr Cheney said.

In the interview, Mr Cheney also attacked Mr Obama for apologising for US actions that he said did not need apologising for, and for actions and statements which he claimed had harmed the standing of the US in the world. >>> Jenny Booth | Tuesday, April 21, 2009

FOX NEWS: Cheney Calls for Release of Memos Showing Results of Interrogation Efforts

Former Vice President Cheney says he knows how successful the interrogation techniques were in collecting intelligence for the United States and wants that information to be released to the public as well as the legal memos explaining the decision to allow the heavily criticized methods.

Now that the memos showing the rulings of interrogation techniques have been released, the Obama administration should release additional documents that show what the interrogations yielded to make it an "honest debate," former Vice President Dick Cheney told FOX News on Monday.

In an interview with FOX News' Sean Hannity aired on "Hannity" Monday night, Cheney questioned the point of releasing the legal decisions behind the interrogations but not the outcome of them.

"One of the things that I find a little bit disturbing about this recent disclosure is they put out the legal memos, the memos that the CIA got from the Office of Legal Counsel, but they didn't put out the memos that showed the success of the effort," Cheney said.

Cheney said he's asked that the documents be declassified because he has remained silent on the confidential information, but he knows how successful the interrogation process was and wants the rest of the country to understand. >>> FOXNews.com | Monday, April 20, 2009

Complete with photographs of men in white robes with scarves covering their faces performing a variety of squats and sit-ups, it advises supporters to keep in shape so that they can "strike hard" against their enemies.

There is also a warning against visiting "un-Islamic" western gyms including LA Fitness with their "music, semi-naked women, free mixing and the danger of showing off".

And there is advice against using weights because of their unavailability on the front line in places such as Afghanistan.

Aussie Mother Jailed Two Years for 'Insulting' Kuwaiti Emir

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: The lawyer for a Sydney woman sentenced to two years in a Kuwaiti prison will try to obtain a lesser sentence or early release for his client, the Department of Foreign Affairs says.

Nasrah Alshamery was convicted yesterday of insulting the country's ruler after a row broke out at Kuwait International Airport when the Sydney family of nine were on holiday there last year.

DFAT confirmed a criminal court sentenced the 43-year-old mother of seven, who suffers from diabetes and is on a disability pension, to two years in jail.

A DFAT spokesperson said Alshamery's Kuwaiti lawyer, Falah al-Hajraf, would seek a reduced sentence or early release.
"I will appeal the verdict tomorrow," Mr al-Hajraf told the media earlier.

"My client has denied the charge during the trial and insisted she committed no wrongdoing." >>> Georgina Robinson | Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Yael Levy: Switzerland Plays Neutrality Card

YNET NEWS: Former ambassador to Geneva chides Swiss president for meeting with Iranian president, says country cannot remain neutral in the face of Holocaust denial. Historian Arieh Kochavi explains why Switzerland's neutrality serves its long-term interests

Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz justified his meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday, asserting to his critics that Switzerland is maintaining its neutrality.

The neutrality card failed, however, to win over at least one skeptic, Israel's former ambassador to Geneva, Yitzhak Meir.

"It was impossible to remain neutral in the face of the evil of World War II, and it is impossible to remain neutral in the face of Ahmadinejad," Meir told Ynet.

"As a friend of Switzerland, I believe that the president was mistaken in his understanding of the average citizen's stance in Switzerland today," said Meir, who dispatched a letter to Merz's office in Berne.

"I wrote to him that what he did wasn't just wrong, it was a gross error. I regret this, and it pains me as a man who has seen the other sides of Switzerland."

The former ambassador believes that Switzerland has yet to understand that the neutrality it aspires to is not feasible.

"The committee that Switzerland formed after WWII acknowledged the fact that the country carried out a role that the Swiss couldn't forgive themselves for. They couldn't come to terms with what occurred in their country in the name of 'neutrality' – their policies regarding Jewish refugees. And here, once more the issue of neutrality is on the table."

Meir emphasized that Switzerland does not deny the Holocaust like Ahmadinejad and his ilk, but added that this is what makes the meeting so problematic.

"Holocaust deniers will be able to use the meeting despite Switzerland's stance. This meeting is grave because it creates a sort of banality and laicization of the Swiss attempt not to forget the Holocaust. I see President Merz's choice as an anti-Swiss act." >>> Yael Levy | Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Torture Memo Has Put US in Danger, CIA Tells Barack Obama

TIMESONLINE: President Obama visited the CIA headquarters yesterday to placate officials dismayed by his decision to release top secret “torture” memos, a move that has provoked accusations that he is willing to compromise America’s safety out of political correctness.

Mr Obama’s first visit to the CIA, to boost morale there and shore up his own reputation, came as his decision to release the memos detailing brutal interrogation sessions of terror suspects continued to attract criticism.

There were claims from inside the agency’s ranks that the move had undermined its ability to extract vital intelligence from America’s enemies, and could even blow the cover of some secret operatives.

Michael Hayden, who ran the CIA under President Bush, said before Mr Obama’s visit that the release of the memos had compromised the CIA’s intelligence gathering work and, in effect, aided America’s enemies.

Mr Obama sought to assure CIA staff that they still had his support and that he was prepared to draw a line under the agency’s dubious recent practices.

“Don’t be discouraged by what’s happened the last few weeks,” he said. “Don’t be discouraged that we have to acknowledge potentially we have made some mistakes — that’s how we learn. >>> Tim Reid in Washington | Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Barack Obama to Meet CIA Agents to Calm Anger over 'Torture' Memos

THE TELEGRAPH: President Barack Obama is to make his first visit to the Central Intelligence Agency in an attempt to calm an uproar among America's spies over his release of secret memos about interrogation techniques.

The White House said he would address staff at the agency's headquarters in Langley, Virginia about the "importance of the CIA's mission".

His visit came as it emerged that the highly controversial technique of "waterboarding", a type of simulated drowning, was used 266 times on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, two senior al-Qaeda prisoners.

Last week, Mr Obama released four memos, running to 126 pages, written by officials in President George W. Bush's administration and containing explicit details of the CIA's methods of extracting information from al-Qaeda suspects between 2002 and 2005.

Although Mr Obama said that neither CIA interrogators nor the authors of the memos should be prosecuted, civil liberties groups have demanded that charges be brought, arguing that the "Nuremberg defence" of following orders is unacceptable.

The methods, eventually prohibited by the Bush administration, included sleep deprivation for up to 11 days, forced nudity and stress positions as waterboarding, in which "water is continuously applied from a height of 12 to 24 inches" for "20 to 40 seconds". It was also revealed that Abu Zubaydah was placed in a box with an insect in order to exploit his fear of them.

Leon Panetta, Mr Obama's CIA chief, and four most recent former heads of the spy agency had all implored the US president not to release the memos, stating that doing so would damage national security and demoralise CIA operatives. >>> By Toby Harnden in Washington | Monday, April 20, 2009

>>> vin/ap/sda | Montag, 20. Terrorism: Al-Qaeda No.2 Unimpressed by Obama

ADN KRONOS INTERNATIONAL (AKI): Dubai - Barack Obama's election as US president has failed to lift America's status in the Muslim and Arab world, and is a victory for Al-Qaeda, according to a new audio message allegedly from the terror network's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahiri. The video was posted on key jihadist websites on Monday.

The authenticity of the tape is yet to be verified. The purported message is in Arabic and, unlike previous ones, contains no English subtitles. The message is edited with extracts from recent Arabic TV interviews with Arab political analysts.

"In our view, America is still the country that kills Muslims in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. It is the country that steals our assets and occupies our lands, and which props up thieving and corrupt Arab regimes.

"The Islamic nation has opted to revive Islam and refuses to give in to oppression. Killing or capturing people casts the US in an even worse light. The US airstrikes in Pakistan pour oil on the flames and will lead to further defeats for that country," al-Zawahiri says.

Obama's election was actually a political triumph for Al-Qaeda and the result of US defeat in Iraq, the message says.

"Obama's victory is nothing more than the recognition by the American people that (former president George W.) Bush's policies had failed, and that the administration was lying when it claimed to have defeated the mujadeen (holy warriors)," al-Zawahiri says. >>> | Monday, April 20, 2009
Women in Somali City Must Cover Up or Go to Jail

CNN: Women in Somalia's third-largest city, Baidoa, have been ordered to wear Islamic dress starting this week or face jail time, according to a resident and Somali media reports.

The order -- issued last week by Al-Shabaab, the radical Islamist militia that controls the city -- also warns business owners to close their shops during daily prayers, or they will be temporarily shut down, a local journalist said.

The militia has ordered women to cover their bodies and heads from view, according to a resident of Baidoa who did not want to be identified for security reasons. The clothing must be black, red or white, and women in the impoverished city are concerned that they will not be able to purchase clothing that conforms to the order, the resident said.

He said women would be jailed if they violated the order after it goes into effect Tuesday. Somalia's Shabelle Media, quoting an Al-Shabaab spokesman, said they would spend 12 hours in jail. >>> CNN's Ben Brumfield and journalist Mohamed Amiin Adow contributed to this report | Monday, April 20, 2009

ASSOCIATED PRESS: JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday not to allow Holocaust deniers to carry out a second Holocaust against the Jewish people.

Speaking at the ceremony marking Israel's annual memorial day for the 6 million Jews killed by Nazis and their collaborators during World War II, Netanyahu also described a U.N. anti-racism conference under way in Geneva as an anti-Israel event.

The hawkish prime minister, who took office about three weeks ago, criticized the president of Switzerland for meeting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the conference. Netanyahu called Ahmadinejad a Holocaust denier who wants to perpetrate another massacre of Jews.

"We will not allow the Holocaust deniers to carry out another Holocaust against the Jewish people. This is the supreme duty of the state of Israel. This is my supreme duty as prime minister of Israel," Netanyahu said. >>> By Mark Lavie | Monday, April 20, 2009
Britain and EU Diplomats Walk Out as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Calls Israel 'Racist'

THE TELEGRAPH: Britain and other European Union countries have walked out of a United Nations conference after Iran's president attacked Israel as the "most cruel and racist regime".

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad smiled as European diplomats left in protest over his opening address to a controversial UN summit to fight racism.

President Ahmadinejad, speaking as Israelis prepares to commemorate the Holocaust on Tuesday, described Jews and Israel's creation as the "ugly face" of a Western conspiracy.

"They sent migrants from Europe, the United States in order to establish a racist government in the occupied Palestine," he said.

"The word Zionism personifies racism that falsely resorts to religion and abuses religious sentiments to hide their hatred and ugly faces."

EU diplomats launched a walk out when Mr Ahmadinejad claimed that the "pretext of Jewish suffering", a reference to the Holocaust, had been used to create Israel.

The United States, Israel, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand boycotted the conference because of fears that Mr Ahmadinejad would use the event to equate Zionism with racism.

British and other EU officials had attended the conference but walked out after Iran's leader launched into an attack on Western support Israel's "totally racist" policy in Gaza. >>> By Bruno Waterfield | Monday, April 20, 2009

BBC: Walkout at Iran Leader's Speech

Diplomats have walked out of a speech by the Iranian president at a UN anti-racism conference after he described Israel as a "racist government".

Two protesters, wearing coloured wigs, disrupted the beginning of the speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - followed by the Western walkout.

Others enthusiastically clapped as Mr Ahmadinejad continued his address.

France said it was a "hate speech". A number of other Western countries have boycotted the conference altogether.

The walkout is a public relations disaster for the United Nations, which had hoped the conference would be a shining example of what the UN is supposed to do best - uniting to combat injustice in the world, says the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva. >>> | Monday, April 20, 2009

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Iran's President Slams Israel, Prompts Walkouts

GENEVA -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad described the Holocaust as a "pretext" for aggression against Palestinians, prompting European diplomats to walk out of a speech disrupted by jeering protesters in rainbow wigs tossing red clown noses at the hardline leader.

Mr. Ahmadinejad was the first government official to take the floor at a U.N. racism conference opening on the eve of Israel's Holocaust Memorial Day. Two protesters in clown costumes tossed soft red objects at Mr. Ahmadinejad as he recited a Muslim prayer to begin his speech.

A Jewish student group from France later took credit for causing the disturbance, saying members threw clown noses to "symbolize the mascarade that this conference represents."

Mr. Ahmadinejad restarted his talk and delivered a speech that lasted more than a half-hour, saying the United States and Europe had helped establish Israel after World War II and victimize Palestinians "under the pretext of Jewish suffering."

That prompted a walkout by some 40 diplomats from Britain and France and other European countries that had threatened to leave the conference if it descended into anti-Semitism or other rhetoric harshly critical of Israel, which marred the U.N.'s last racism gathering eight years ago in South Africa.

The United States and eight other Western countries were already boycotting the event because of concerns about its fairness.
Mr. Ahmadinejad went on to accuse Israel of being the "most cruel and racist regime." >>> Associated Press | Monday, April 20, 2009

Iranian President Says Reporter Must Get Full Appeal

THE TELEGRAPH: Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has offered a potential olive branch to the United States over the spying conviction of an Iranian-American journalist by urging a full defence be allowed at her appeal.

His surprisingly moderate statement came a day after Tehran announced conviction of Roxana Saberi, 31, a dual American and Iranian citizen, and an eight-year jail sentence.

In a move that could be an overture to President Barack Obama, Mr Ahmadinejad instructed chief Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi to ensure that "suspects be given all their rights to defend themselves" against the charges.

Mr Obama did not respond directly to Mr Ahmadinejad, who could also have been positioning himself internally against the hard-line Iranian judiciary, but made emollient comments about Miss Saberi's case at a press conference in Trinidad.

"Obviously I'm gravely concerned with her safety and well being," he said. "We are working to make sure that she is properly treated and to get information about the disposition of her case.

"She is an American citizen and I have complete confidence that she was not engaging in any sort espionage. She is an Iranian-American who was interested in the country which her family came from and it is appropriate for her to be treated as such and be released." >>> By Toby Harnden in Washington | Sunday, April 19, 2009
Hardliners Win Northern Cyprus Election

BBC: Turkish Cypriot nationalists have swept to victory in a parliamentary election in northern Cyprus that could hamper peace talks with Greek Cypriots.

The right-wing National Unity Party (UBP), which favours closer links with Turkey rather than EU membership, has won 44% of the vote.

That leaves the ruling Republican Turkish Party (CTP) of leader Mehmet Ali Talat with only 29%.
Mr Talat retains his position, but his hands will now be tied at peace talks.

Cypriot problem

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish forces invaded the island in response to an attempt by Greek Cypriots to make it part of Greece.

Frustration at the slow progress of talks aimed at reuniting the island appears to have been a key element in this latest poll, the BBC's Tabitha Morgan reports from Cyprus.

When Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Talat began talks with the Greek Cypriot leader, President Dimitris Christofias, over a year ago, he predicted a deal within months.

As part of the package, the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic - which is only recognised by Turkey - would have gained automatic membership of the EU.

None of this has happened.

Two-state solution

The leader of the nationalist UBP party, Dervis Eroglu, has said he will be pressing for international recognition for the breakaway state.

The UBP wants the island to remain divided and has its sights on a two-state model. >>> | Sunday, April 19, 2009

>>> L.D. USA boykottieren Antirassismuskonferenz in Genf

>>> bru/sda | Sonntag, April 19, 2009

The Very Rev Colin Slee, the liberal Dean of Southwark has publicly attacked the Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, and said that he was one of three bishops whose position was now "open to some debate".

The Dean's broadside, delivered in the introduction to the annual report for Southwark Cathedral, will infuriate evangelical supporters of the Bishop, 59, and further widen the gulf between the traditional and liberal wings of the church. >>> By Chris Hastings | Saturday, April 18, 2009
Revealed: Government Helpline Tells Children 'Cannabis Is Safer than Alcohol'

Absurd and disgraceful! How low will this dreadful government stoop? - Mark

THE TELEGRAPH: Children calling the Government's drugs helpline are being told that cannabis is safer than alcohol and that ecstasy will not damage their health, an investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has found.

Advisers manning the “Frank” helpline are informing callers they believed to be children as young as 13 that alcohol is a “much more powerful drug than cannabis” and that using the illegal drug recreationally is not harmful because it “doesn’t get you that high”.

Callers are also being told that taking ecstasy will not lead to long-term damage and that if they are in doubt, to “just take half a pill and if you are handling that OK, you can take the other half.”

They are even being told that they would be able to smoke a cannabis joint, on top of ecstasy, with no ill-effects.

The advice, given to reporters who rang the helpline posing as young people, has alarmed anti-drugs campaigners who branded it “scandalous” and “irresponsible.”

Health experts have condemned the advice given to children as “frankly appalling”, “factually incorrect” and “worryingly cavalier”. >>> By Julie Henry, David Barrett and Alex Ralph | Saturday, April 18, 2009
Iraqi Gay Men Face 'Lives of Hell'

BBC: Grainy footage taken on a mobile phone and widely distributed around Baghdad shows a terrified young Iraqi boy cowering and whimpering as men with a stick force him to strip, revealing women's underwear beneath his dishdasha (Arab robe).

"Why are you dressed as a girl?" roars one of the men, brandishing his stick as the youth removes his brassiere.

The sobbing boy, who appears to be about 12, tries to explain that his family made him do it to earn money, as they have no other source of income.

The scene, apparently filmed in a police post, reinforced reports of a campaign against gay men in Iraq which activists say has claimed the lives of more than 60 since December.

In the latest manifestation of the campaign, posters have appeared on walls in the poor Shia suburb of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, listing alleged homosexuals by name and threatening to kill them.
Those named have gone underground, while gay men throughout the city and in some other parts of the country also live in fear. >>> By Jim Muir, BBC News, Baghdad | Saturday, April 18, 2009

«Nous avons un gouvernement islamique». REUTERS: Somali MPs Vote to Establish Sharia Law

MOGADISHU - Somali members of parliament voted unanimously on Saturday to implement sharia law across the country in a move aimed at undermining hardline Islamist rebels who have been waging a two-year insurgency.

The approval by parliament had been expected since March 10, when the cabinet appointed by new President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed also voted to establish sharia, or Islamic, law.

Experts say Ahmed's move undermines guerrillas who have been fighting the government and questioning his Islamic credentials. It will also please wealthy potential donors in Gulf nations.

Osman Elimi Boqore, the deputy speaker of parliament, said 343 MPs attended Saturday's session.

"All of them voted 'yes' and accepted the implementation of sharia," he told reporters. "There was no rejection or silence, so from today we have an Islamic government." >>> Reporting by Ibrahim Mohamed; Writing by Daniel Wallis; Editing by Richard Balmforth, © Thomson Reuters 2009 All rights reserved | Saturday, April 18, 2009
Damascene Perversion: Syria's Underwear Sellers Peddle Sex and Seduction

SPIEGELONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Maid's costumes, musicial negligee and remote-controlled underpants: You'd be surprised what you can find in a Damascus market. Syrian underwear is now so famous that it is exported throughout the Middle East -- and Palestinian women, reportedly, have the wildest taste.

Syrian underwear has become famous throughout the Middle East for its audacity. "Ever since people started going to Internet cafes and seeing what the rest of the world is wearing, demand has completely changed," says underwear merchant Abdullah Hayek. Photo courtesy of SpiegelOnline International

It's the "latest thing," Abdullah Hayek says, holding the garment up. It's an almost non-existent bra and thong, which consists of strings and a tiny triangle. It's made, not of fabric, but of sugar fondant, which has been rolled out until it is wafer-thin, held together with elastic cords.

"This allows the husband to nibble the underwear off of his wife's body," explains Hayek. The garment, which costs the equivalent of about €3 ($3.9), is available in a selection of flavors, including pineapple, apple, honey, chocolate and mango. "I probably sell 15 of them a day," said Hayek.

The Hamidiyeh souk in Damascus is without doubt one of the best markets in the Arab world. Naturally you can find carpets, inlaid crafts and Oriental kitsch being hawked to tourists within the maze of alleyways. But the majority of customers are Syrian. They push through the souk by the thousands, buying washing powder in one alley and dishes in another -- and, at the intersection where the lingerie merchants sit, they buy sexy underwear. >>> By Ulrike Putz in Damascus | Friday, April 17, 2009
