Waleed Asadi: The Levantine Shepherd's Pie | Saneyet Batata w Lahme |

May 31, 2026 | Meat and potatoes is a combination that every culture utilizes in multiple ways. Sometimes roasted, fried, stewed, and in this case, baked.

When I think of a western shepherd’s pie it's filled with butter, peas, carrots, and is a bit like stew. The Levantine version, on the other hand, is very simple and light and has all the extra bits served on the side. It really is just meat and potatoes.

This is the version I grew up with. It's a very nostalgic dish for me. It feels like home, tastes like home, and I hope it's something you can bring into your home.

Hauptsache illiberal: Die neoreaktionäre Bewegung will hinter die Moderne zurück

» | Thomas Fasbender | Sonntag, 31. Mai 2026

What Is Orange Wine? And Why Is It on Every Brunch Menu?

May 30, 2026 | Orange wine isn't made from oranges — and it isn't a trend. It's the oldest wine in the world, made for 8,000 years in Georgia using clay vessels called qvevri.

Today, it's on every brunch menu. So, is it worth the hype, or just expensive, amber-coloured marketing?

I taste three orange wines — the icon, the ancient original, and the supermarket version — and answer the questions people are too embarrassed to ask: what it is, why it's everywhere, and when NOT to order it.

I'm Anya Gariboldi — sommelier, wine judge, WSET Diploma. Stop ordering wine to impress. Start ordering wine you actually understand.

How Gay Courtship Actually Worked in Ancient Greece

May 30, 2026 | A live hare arrives at your front door. Your entire family knows what it means. An older man wants to court you. In ancient Athens, that was how it started.

Gay courtship in ancient Greece had more rules than a modern dating app. Who could pursue whom. What gifts to send. What was allowed physically — and what would destroy your reputation forever. One politician lost his citizenship because a jury believed he had been paid for sex. The most beautiful man in Athens spent an entire night in Socrates' bed and nothing happened.

This is the story of how it actually worked, day by day, gift by gift, rule by rule.

Constantin Schreiber – Gesellschaft: Sind wir in Deutschland besonders unfreundlich?

May 31, 2026 | Ist Deutschland ein besonders unfreundliches Land?

Queer History | Terra X

With No Medicine and No Escape, Gaza’s Cancer Patients Watch Their Tumours Grow

THE TELEGRAPH: Aid blockades and Israeli evacuation restrictions leave Gazans stranded with inadequate healthcare

Minutes after Najat al-Loh learnt that the 7cm lump in her right breast was cancer, her oldest son Atta died from wounds sustained in an Israeli bombardment.

“As I stood there talking to the doctor, I received the news,” she said. “I collapsed entirely, not just emotionally but physically. My daughter was screaming.”

Nine months on, the 48-year-old now has five more lumps across her chest and under her arms, some the size of tennis balls.

Her face is riven with exhaustion and despair as she hands over the chaotic bundle of medical papers to Khaleel, her 13-year-old son, to see whether he can make sense of them.

The war in Gaza ended just a few weeks after her diagnosis on Aug 17, thanks to Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan that promised to flood the benighted strip with food, medicine and life-saving equipment. Yet in that time, Ms Loh has had access to only the most rudimentary cancer care, allowing the disease to spread far beyond the point of a cure.

She is one of an estimated 13,000 cancer patients who are trapped in a territory with virtually no specialist services left and – save for a lucky few – unable to leave to get the treatment they need.

Both Israeli blockades, which started in the early 1990s but intensified after the war in Gaza started in 2023, and foot-dragging by other countries, including Britain, are responsible.

With Hamas refusing to hand over its weapons, Israel is reportedly contemplating tightening aid deliveries further and US attention diverted by Iran, the situation seems likely to worsen. » | Henry Bodkin Jerusalem Correspondent. Nedal Hamdouna in Gaza | Sunday, May 31, 2026

How British Politics Lost the Plot | Andrew Lownie

May 30, 2026 | Sunday Times bestselling author Andrew Lownie sees shades of the Weimar Republic in today's Britain. The political centre is gone, the country has drifted toward its extremes, and almost nobody of stature is left to command respect. He doesn't soften the comparison either. The Weimar Republic, he reminds Jim Stenman and Suzanne Kianpour on Global Power Shifts, was the system that gave way to the Nazi Party.

How did Britain get here? Lownie traces it back to William Hague's decision to hand Conservative Party leadership elections to activists, which produced a generation of leaders chosen by the fringe rather than the centre, and saw cabinet discipline collapse along with them. Politicians who once entered public life out of duty have largely disappeared, edged out by candidates obsessed with personal advancement. A clickbait media environment now rewards spectacle over seriousness, which means leaders end up following the news cycle instead of leading it. Brexit, in Lownie's reading, was symptom rather than cause.

What's left is a political class most people now see as "another bunch of grifters."

A serious conversation about institutional decline, the end of the centre, and the historical company Britain is keeping.

Cancer Jab Can Eradicate Entire Tumours in Patients, Trial Shows

THE GUARDIAN: Jab brought ‘unprecedentedly strong responses’ in patients whose disease had become resistant to chemotherapy and immunotherapy

Doctors have hailed “unprecedented” trial results that show a triple-action cancer jab can eradicate entire tumours in patients.

In an international trial spanning 11 countries, the injection was offered to patients whose cancer had spread or come back and whose disease had failed to respond to other treatments.

The jab, called amivantamab, shrank the tumours of more than a third of patients, with dramatic changes seen within weeks. In 15 of them, doctors found the drug had melted away their tumours altogether.

Kevin Harrington, professor in biological cancer therapies at the Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR), said: “These are unprecedentedly strong responses in patients whose disease has become resistant to both chemotherapy and immunotherapy. » | Andrew Gregory, Health editor, in Chicago | Saturday, May 30, 2026

In this interview, historian and authoritarianism expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat breaks down the subtle mechanics of modern political control. Moving past historical models of closed-media dictatorships, Ben-Ghiat explains how authoritarian environments form in the open digital age through "short-term coordination," mandatory party dogmas, and the intentional targeting of everyday citizens to induce widespread self-censorship.

She is joined by Pat Morrison to discuss the shifting American perspective on wealth, the emotional mechanics of modern propaganda, and why the ultimate goal of authoritarian rhetoric is to make citizens police themselves.

When the Moors Ruled in Europe: A Documentary by Bettany Hughes | الأندلس

Sep 27, 2023 | …Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European history--the rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal.

Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years.

This fascinating documentary explodes old stereotypes and offers shocking new insights. You’ll discover the ingenious mathematics behind Granada’s dazzling Alhambra Palace, trace El Cid’s lineage to his Moorish roots, and learn how the Iberian population willingly converted to Islam in droves.

Through interviews with noted scholars, you’ll see how Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel the West out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance.

What emerges is a richly detailed portrait of a sensuous, inquisitive, and remarkably progressive Islamic culture in Christian Europe.

Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA (born May 1967) is an English historian, author and broadcaster, specialising in classical history. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth, and the history of Istanbul. She is active in efforts to encourage the teaching of the classics in UK state schools. Hughes was appointed OBE in 2019.

Lula Says Brazil Will Not Be Treated Like ‘Tinpot Country’ after US Designates Gangs as Terrorists

THE GUARDIAN: Marco Rubio made announcement after meeting president’s far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro

Brazil will not be treated as a “tinpot country,” the country’s president, Luiz Inácio da Silva, said on Friday after the United States designated Brazil’s two largest criminal gangs, the First Capital Command (PCC) and the Red Command, as foreign terrorist organisations.

The announcement, made by Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, on Thursday, is being widely seen in Brazil as a setback for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president who had strongly opposed the designation – and a boost for Lula’s main challenger in October’s presidential election, the far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

Chosen to run in place of his father, Jair Bolsonaro – the former president who is barred from running because he is in house arrest after being convicted of attempting a coup – Flávio spent this week in the US, where he met with Donald Trump and Rubio.

Lula said he was “very saddened” by the news that “the United States secretary, from North America, a certain Marco Rubio, said that our criminals here are terrorists and that Americans can intervene”, he said during a speech at an event in the state of Sergipe.

“We do not accept being treated like little boys. We do not accept being treated as if we were some tinpot country,” he added.

In a statement, he also called the Bolsonaro family “traitors” and “false patriots”. » | Tiago Rogero in Rio de Janeiro | Friday, May 29, 2026

THE NEW YORK TIMES: A federal judge in Washington ordered on Friday that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts remove President Trump’s name from the building’s facade and all official branding, finding that the board’s decision to add it was unlawful.

Judge Christopher R. Cooper of the Federal District Court in Washington wrote in a 94-page opinion that a law passed by Congress in 1964 made “crystal clear” that the institution was to be named for President Kennedy.

“Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it,” the judge wrote.
