The Glass Closet | Lord John Browne | Talks at Google

Mar 18, 2015 • Arjan Dijk joins Lord Browne, former BP CEO and author of The Glass Closet: Why Coming Out is Good Business for a fireside chat on October 30, 2014.

Lord Browne spent his entire career at BP and served as CEO from 1995 to 2007, transforming it from a medium-sized oil company to a “supermajor”. He resigned when a former boyfriend sold a story to a tabloid newspaper, pulling Lord Browne very publicly out of the closet. He is now the author of The Glass Closet: Why Coming Out is Good for Business, a commentary on LGBT inclusion in the corporate world and the steps companies need to take so that employees feel able to bring their whole selves to work. I met Lord Browne some months ago in London and really think that he has very interesting perspectives and experience (and his book draws from very similar research that Sheryl Sandberg used in her "Lean-In" book).

During the hour long discussion, we’ll have a candid conversation around inclusion and diversity in the workplace. We’ll save the second half of the session for Q&A from the audience.

Sinn Féin Assembly Victory Fuels Debate on Future of Union

THE OBSERVER: Leader Mary Lou McDonald raises issue of unification as nationalists become biggest party in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has slipped into political crisis after Sinn Féin’s triumph in the assembly election triggered calls for a referendum on a united Ireland and the Democratic Unionist party vowed to block the formation of a new power-sharing executive at Stormont.

Jubilant Sinn Féin supporters celebrated across the region on Saturday when final vote counts confirmed a historic victory that turned the former IRA mouthpiece into the biggest party, with the right to nominate the first minister.

Sinn Féin won 29% of the first preference vote and will be the biggest party in the Stormont assembly, a seismic moment for a state that was designed a century ago to have a permanent unionist majority. » | Rory Carroll and Lisa O'Carroll in Magherafelt, and Toby Helm | Saturday, May 7, 2022

Where Does the Anti-Abortion Movement Go after Roe?

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Supreme Court draft opinion signals a new era for the 50-year effort to end the constitutional right to abortion. Next goals include a national ban and, in some cases, classifying abortion as homicide.

Anti-abortion activists at the 49th annual March for Life in January. The movement to restrict or banish abortion is entering a new era. | Kenny Holston for The New York Times

For nearly half a century, the anti-abortion movement has propelled itself toward a goal that at times seemed impossible, even to true believers: overturning Roe v. Wade.

That single-minded mission meant coming to Washington every January for the March for Life to mark Roe’s anniversary. It required electing anti-abortion lawmakers and keeping the pressure on to pass state restrictions. It involved funding anti-abortion lobbying groups, praying and protesting outside clinics, and opening facilities to persuade women to keep their pregnancies. Then this week, the leaked draft of the Supreme Court opinion that would overturn the constitutional right to abortion revealed that anti-abortion activists’ dream of a post-Roe America appeared poised to come to pass.

The court’s opinion is not final, but the draft immediately shifted the horizon by raising a new question: If Roe is struck down, where does the anti-abortion movement go next? » | Elizabeth Dias and Ruth Graham | Saturday, May 7, 2022

Florida Pension Fund Sues Elon Musk and Twitter to Stop Buyout

THE GUARDIAN: The class-action lawsuit argues that the deal cannot close before 2025

Elon Musk and Twitter were sued on Friday by a Florida pension fund seeking to stop Musk from completing his $44bn takeover of the social media company before 2025.

In a proposed class-action lawsuit filed in Delaware chancery court, the Orlando police pension fund said Delaware law forbade a quick merger because Musk had agreements with other big Twitter shareholders, including his financial adviser Morgan Stanley and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, to support the buyout.

The fund said those agreements made Musk, who owns 9.2% of Twitter, the effective “owner” of more than 15% of the company’s shares. It said that required delaying the merger by three years unless two-thirds of shares not “owned” by him granted approval.

Morgan Stanley owns about 8.8% of Twitter shares and Dorsey owns 2.4%.

Musk hopes to complete his $54.20 a share Twitter takeover this year, in one of the world’s largest leveraged buyouts. » | Guardian staff and agencies | Friday, May 6, 2022

Could Bitcoin Be Used to Circumvent Sanctions against Russia? | DW News

May 7, 2022 • In a financial first for Africa, the Central African Republic has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. Lawmakers unanimously approved a law legalizing the cryptocurrency alongside the CFA franc. But on the streets of Bangui, there's Bitcoin bafflement. And the political opposition rejects the new law and plans to challenge it in the constitutional court. CAR already has a currency: It is one of six central African countries that share the CFA franc – backed by France and pegged to the euro. Some members of parliament argue that the move is simply intended to gut this common currency. Others have speculated that Bitcoin might be used to funnel money from CAR to Russia, bypassing international sanctions.

Abortion and the Supreme Court: What’s at Stake? | The Economist

May 6, 2022 • A leaked draft opinion suggests the Supreme Court is poised to overturn the right to abortion in America. If this ruling goes ahead, women's rights are in danger.

This is one of the most ridiculous, retrograde steps I have ever heard of in a so-called first-world country. If this is passed, if abortions are made illegal, women will have to return to less scientific methods such as the use of hot baths, bottles of gin and knitting needles, or else go to some back street joint to get fixed up! Biden Warns LGBTQ+ Children Could Be Next Target of Republican ‘Maga Crowd’

THE GUARDIAN: President warns of new attacks by Trump-dominated political party after supreme court ruling draft leak on abortion

Joe Biden has warned of new attacks on civil rights as the supreme court prepares to strike down the right to abortion, telling reporters at the White House that LGBTQ+ children could be the next targets of a Trump-dominated Republican party he called “this Maga crowd” and “the most extreme political organisation … in recent American history”.

“What happens,” the president asked, if “a state changes the law saying that children who are LGBTQ can’t be in classrooms with other children? Is that legit under the way the decision is written?”

Biden’s remarks, at the end of a brief session on deficit reduction, referred to a leaked draft of a ruling by Justice Samuel Alito. One of six conservatives on the supreme court, Alito was writing on a Mississippi case which aims to overturn both Roe v Wade, the 1973 ruling which guaranteed the right to abortion, and Casey v Planned Parenthood from 1992, which buttressed it. » | Martin Pengelly | Wednesday, May 4, 2022

She describes how the U.S. has historically endangered and denied essential health services to Black and Brown women, and calls new abortion restrictions “the new Jane Crow,” warning that they will further criminalize reproductive health and encourage medical professionals to breach their patients’ confidentiallity and report self-administered abortions to law enforcement.

Recession: The Price Britain Will Pay to Control Inflation

THE GUARDIAN: Analysis: As the Bank of England raises interest rates the message is clear – the 1970s are back

Unemployment rising. Inflation above 10%. Energy prices soaring. Living standards squeezed. The message from the Bank of England was crystal clear: the 1970s are back.

The word stagflation was not to be found in the 100-plus pages of Threadneedle Street’s monetary policy report. Yet a period of weak growth and rapidly rising prices is precisely what the Bank says is in store for the UK. The current post-lockdown bounce will be short-lived and, in a real blast from the past, the economy will be driven into recession to bring inflation under control.

Nor is the pain likely to be over quickly. The economy is expected to contract by 0.25% in 2023 and remain weak in the next two years. Unless things take a marked turn for the better, the next general election will take place against a backdrop of weak growth and lengthening dole queues. » | Larry Elliot, Economics editor | Thursday, May 5, 2022

Former Anti-Abortion Activist Regrets Role in Creating Pro-life "Propaganda" | Amanpour & Company

May 5, 2022 • Americans on both sides of the abortion issue are fired up following the leak of a draft opinion that shows the Supreme Court has voted to end a women's right to choose after nearly 50 years. The Governor of Oklahoma has now signed a law banning abortion after 6 weeks. It's modeled on a controversial Texas law that allows citizens to collect pay for helping with enforcement. Abortion is at the center of America's culture wars. How did it become so divisive an issue? Evangelical Christian groups have rallied to limit access to abortion for years. Francis Schaeffer is an evangelical scholar whose son Frank encouraged him to campaign against Roe v. Wade with Christian literature and movies. Frank joins Christiane from Boston to explain why he now regrets his role in the controversy. Originally aired on May 5, 2022.

‘Embarrassed to Be British’: Brexit Study Reveals Impact on UK Citizens in EU

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Survey of Britons on continent shows ‘deep transformations’, shame and disappointment

The first major study since Brexit of UK citizens living in the EU has revealed its profound impact on their lives, with many expressing serious concerns over their loss of free movement and voting rights – and a very different perception of Britain.

The survey, of 1,328 British nationals across the continent, showed that if “the public narrative suggests Brexit is done and dusted, it has brought deep transformations to the lives of British citizens in the EU and EEA”, the study’s co-lead, said.

“The long tail of Brexit is evident in its continuing impacts both on the way they live their lives, and in its lasting significance for their sense of identity and belonging,” said Benson, a sociology professor at Lancaster University.

The survey, conducted between December 2021 and January 2022, a year after the end of the Brexit transition period, and part of a wider project by Lancaster and Birmingham universities, found 59% of respondents had lived in their country of residence for at least five years and most intended to stay.

But many were angered by their loss of free movement, meaning they can no longer move within the EU for work, or retire to another EU country, and especially worried about being unable to return to the UK with non-British family members in future. » | Jon Henley, Europe correspondent | Wednesday, May 4, 2022

Through the Trumpian Looking Glass, Forcing Women to Die from Illegal Abortions Is ‘Pro-life’

THE GUARDIAN: The US supreme court leak shows that the levers of power are pulled by those with no skin in the game, at the expense of those with an entire uterus in it

An American girl born this week will have fewer rights than an American girl born in 1973. This is the likely import of the leaked US supreme court draft opinion on abortion rights – and cause for a huge thank-you-very-much to all those guys who suggested that women marching on Washington in January 2017 were “overreacting” to the election of Donald Trump. Please make sure to tell women again when they are being overemotional – even as they sit and watch one of Trump’s justice picks scream and sob his way through his own confirmation hearings. In the meantime, resign yourself to yet another “quirk” of the looking-glass world Trump has created. Of course – OF COURSE – women’s access to abortion would end up being restricted or removed by the deliberate decisions of a man widely imagined to have personally helped to keep the Manhattan abortion sector afloat for decades. » | Marina Hyde | Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a total ban on Russian oil imports to the EU, , saying Vladimir Putin had to pay a “high price for his brutal aggression” in Ukraine.

Member states in Brussels are scrutinising a proposed sixth package of sanctions, but in a speech on Wednesday the European Commission president said Russian oil flows had to stop.

Von der Leyen said Russian supply of crude oil would be prohibited within six months and refined products would be banned by the end of the year, while she acknowledged the demands from countries such as Slovakia and Hungary for additional flexibility.

“Let us be clear: it will not be easy,” Von der Leyen said in a speech to the European parliament. “Some member states are strongly dependent on Russian oil. But we simply have to work on it. ‘Extra Level of Power’: Billionaires Who Have Bought Up the Media

THE GUARDIAN: Elon Musk joins a list of men to use their wealth in the hope of extending their political influence

Elon Musk’s $44bn takeover of Twitter is a “chilling development” in billionaires’ desire to increase their political influence by buying up many of the world’s largest and most influential media brands, a leading British analyst has warned.

Claire Enders, founder of Enders Analysis, said the super-rich have long sought to buy newspapers to help push their agendas and it was now possible to “count on one hand the big media brands that aren’t owned by an oligarch or other billionaire”.

“It’s another sign that the super-wealthy wish to control assets that give them an extra level of power,” she said. “Whatever they may say, that’s the reason why they buy them.

“It is now unusual for major news media not to be owned by a billionaire, and that is why the Guardian [owned by the independent Scott Trust], the Financial Times [owned by the employee-owned Japanese media group Nikkei] and the BBC are consistently shown to be the most trusted news brands.”

As the US Supreme Court Moves to End Abortion, Is America Still a Free Country?

THE GUARDIAN – OPINION: There is no condition more essential to democratic citizenship than a person’s control over her own body. We can’t call ourselves a free country without it

‘This will make women prisoners to their own bodies, and to men’s ideas of what those bodies must mean. It will make our country weaker, crueler, stupider and less vibrant.’ Photograph: Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images

It’s the worst possible outcome: according to a draft majority opinion published by Politico, the US supreme court has voted to overturn Roe v Wade, along with its sister decision Planned Parenthood v Casey. This momentous ruling will result in abortion becoming immediately illegal in an estimated 26 states when it is officially issued, likely sometime next month.

The draft opinion, authored by Samuel Alito, the most rabidly hateful member of the court’s archconservative wing, will upend 50 years of precedent and undo a landmark ruling that has profoundly shaped legal doctrine, popular conceptions of the law, and millions of American lives. It will make women prisoners to their own bodies, and to men’s ideas of what those bodies must mean. It will make our country weaker, crueler, stupider and less vibrant. » | Moira Donegan | Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Israel Summons Russia Envoy over Minister’s Hitler Comments

THE GUARDIAN: Israel condemns comments by Sergei Lavrov, who said Hitler ‘had Jewish blood’ and the ‘most rabid antisemites tend to be Jews’

Israel has summoned the Russian ambassador and demanded an apology over remarks by the Kremlin foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, that Adolf Hitler “had Jewish blood” and that the “most rabid antisemites tend to be Jews”.

The remarks were part of Lavrov’s defence of Russia’s policy of “denazification” in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s term for a sweeping purge that Ukraine says is a pretext for “mass murder.”

In an interview with Italian TV, Lavrov was asked to address how Russia could say it needed to “denazify” the country when its president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is Jewish.

“As to [Zelenskiy’s] argument of what kind of nazification can we have if I’m Jewish, if I remember correctly, and I may be wrong, Hitler also had Jewish blood,” Lavrov said during an interview with Italian television channel Mediaset. “It doesn’t mean anything at all.” » | Andrew Roth and Angela Giuffrida in Rome | Monday, May 2, 2022

Israel Outrage at Russian Claim That Hitler Was Part Jewish

Lavrov's remarks came days after Israel commemorated the Nazi Holocaust | EPA

BBC: Israel's foreign minister has denounced as "unforgivable" remarks by his Russian counterpart that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler "had Jewish blood".

Russian FM Sergei Lavrov made the comments to try to justify Russia's portrayal of Ukraine as "Nazi" despite the fact that its president is Jewish.

Israel's foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador for "clarification" and demanded an apology.

Nazi Germany murdered six million Jews in the Holocaust in World War Two.

Mr Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with the Italian news channel Zona Bianca on Sunday, days after Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, one of the most solemn occasions in the Israeli calendar.

When asked how Russia can claim that it is fighting to "de-Nazify" Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelensky is himself Jewish, Mr Lavrov said: "So what if Zelensky is Jewish."

"The fact does not negate the Nazi elements in Ukraine. I believe that Hitler also had Jewish blood," adding that "some of the worst anti-Semites are Jews." » | Monday, May 2, 2022

Rare ‘Wicked’ Bible That Encourages Adultery Discovered in New Zealand

THE GUARDIAN: First copy of the 1631 bible, which mistakenly reads ‘thou shalt commit adultery’, to be found in the southern hemisphere

An extremely rare bible famous for an unfortunate error that encourages adultery has been discovered in New Zealand.

The 1631 “Wicked” Bible, as it has become known, omits the word “not” from its seventh commandment, informing readers “thou shalt commit adultery”. One thousand copies of the text, which also came to be known as the Adulterous or Sinners’ Bible, were printed, with the error only discovered a year later.

Upon discovery of the mistake, the printers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas were summoned by King Charles I and hauled before the court, where they were admonished for the scandalous typo and sloppy workmanship. They were stripped of their printing licence, had a £300 fine held over their heads for years (though it was eventually quashed) and most of the texts were destroyed. Only about 20 remain in circulation. » | Eva Corlett in Wellington | Monday, May 2, 2022

In the Name of Job Flexibility, ‘Uberisation’ Is Spreading Its Tentacles across Society

THE GUARDIAN – OPINION: From health workers to beauticians, cleaners to academics, the erosion of our rights at work is setting us back a hundred years

In the late 18th century, as the impact of the Industrial Revolution bit into the lives of the nascent working class, the high cost of fuel, one study notes, “forced inhabitants of many southern regions to abandon home cooking”. Fuel costs were much greater in the south than in the north. As a result, Frederic Morton Eden observed in The State of the Poor (1797), “the culinary preparations of the Northern peasant are so much diversified, and his table so often supplied with hot dishes”, whereas in the south, working-class families could not afford to boil or bake potatoes, so were forced to buy cheap white bread and eat dinner cold.

Because it was more expensive to cook at home than to buy shop-made bread, there were more bakeries per head of population in poor areas such as Hampshire than in richer regions such as Yorkshire. More than 200 years on and we’re back in a Britain in which many poor families are being “forced to abandon home cooking” because of the high cost of fuel. Not only has there been an explosion in the use of food banks, but many food bank users “are declining products such as potatoes and other root veg because they can’t afford to boil them”. » | Kenan Malik | Sunday, May 1, 2022

The Observer View on the Cost of Living Crisis

THE OBSERVER – EDITORIAL: Cabinet ministers’ glib shortcuts are dire response to economic crisis

Living standards are set to fall at their fastest rate since records began in the mid-1950s. Last month, the Office for Budget Responsibility predicted that real household incomes will fall by 2.2% this year, as energy and food prices increase but wages fail to keep pace with rising bills.

The impact will not be felt equally. For some, it will barely register. For other families, it will mean difficult decisions about what to cut back on. For others still, it will be profound, stretching precarious budgets in which there is already no give, forcing impossible choices between essentials such as putting food on the table and keeping the heating on, and sharpening the fear of the unexpected outlay that can trigger a debt spiral from which there is no escape. One estimate suggests lower-income households will face a drop in income of £1,300 this year. » | Editorial | Sunday, May 1, 2022

Der Twitter-Kauf ist eine Katastrophe

ELON MUSK
