MARK ALEXANDER – ESSAY: Britain’s destiny lies in Europe. One day, we’ll be back. That is if our European brothers and sisters will accept us back and forgive us for our stupidity. We Brits are Europeans, whether inside or outside of the European Union. It is a historical, geographical, and geological fact. Nobody can deny that because it is undeniable.
Unfortunately, the British electorate was erroneously given a referendum on our membership of the European Union. They shouldn’t have been given the choice to leave in a referendum. Why? Because the issue was extremely complicated, so most people didn’t understand the complexities involved. Very few politicians in Parliament truly understood what was involved in our membership of the Union or the impact of leaving would have on our economy or standing in the world. So, if our parliamentarians didn’t understand what was at stake by leaving, how could we possibly have expected the man in the street to understand what was at stake?
The fact of the matter is simple and clear: The British electorate has been cheated and lied to. They were and still are being lied to apropos of this very important issue concerning Britain’s future and destiny.
But it is very important that we understand why the electorate were lied to, and by whom. They were lied to so that the squillionaire class could make lots of dosh, even more squillions, from our exit from the EU. The fact that by doing this, they stole the average man’s European rights away from him is of no interest, consequence, or importance to them. All they cared about was self-aggrandizement, lining their own pockets, and furthering their own careers. Their perspective? The electorate be damned! And these people have the audacity to call themselves patriots. Go figure!
The people who have stolen the British people’s European rights away from them—rights such as the right to set up a business in Europe, buy properties and homes in Europe, love across frontiers in Europe, receive universal and reciprocal healthcare, and much else besides—is of no consequence or importance to these fools. In any case, most of these self-serving clowns have never done a proper job in their lives. Most of them have been born with a silver spoon, nay golden spoon, in their mouths. Do you think they care about hard-working businessmen and businesswomen losing their businesses because of Brexit? Do you think they care about goods becoming more expensive and scarcer in the shops? Not at all! I doubt that even one of them knows the price of a pint/litre of milk!
These people are just playing around. Politics is all a game to them. They are not serious politicians at all. In fact, do they truly understand national politics, still less understand international politics? I know what I think. I will leave that question with you for you to make up your own minds.
As for being tied to America’s apron strings, I have this to say… We Brits are not Americans; rather, we are Europeans. We share a common ancestry with our brothers and sisters in Europe. Even our royal families are all related; they all have DNA in common. Queen Victoria, for example, was known as the “grandmother of Europe”! We Europeans share so much common ancestry.
As for America and Americans, of course we should be close to America and its people. Americans are our close friends and allies. It is right that they are; and they always will be. However, we can be far, far more useful to America and Americans inside the European Union that we can ever be outside of it. Inside the EU, we can be America’s English-speaking gateway to the continent. Outside of it, Britain is in danger of becoming an irrelevance.
So, I don’t know how long it will take for this folly of Brexit to play out; but I am as sure as anyone can be that one day, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, we Brits will come to realise the folly of our decision to leave you all. I hope that when the time comes, you will again give us the welcome you gave us the first time around. I, for one, feel European with every fibre of my being. I dream of a united Europe. Free and whole – a Europe with a shared common heritage. Vive l’Europe ! Es lebe Europa! Long live Europe!

Fear and Confusion Reign in Kabul Despite American Assurances
THE NEW YORK TIMES: The effort to evacuate people from Afghanistan, hampered by mayhem in Kabul and delays in Washington, stood in sharp contrast to President Biden’s reassurances on Friday.
With thousands of people inside the Kabul airport waiting for flights and thousands more outside the walls trying — and usually failing — to get in, fear reigned among Afghans who feared being stranded in the country after the Taliban takeover.
The United States has rushed troops and diplomatic reinforcements to the airport in recent days to speed up visa processing for Afghans. American commanders are negotiating daily with their Taliban counterparts — the former insurgents they battled for nearly two decades — to ensure that evacuees can reach the airport.
But crowds are still waiting fearfully outside the airport gates, where Taliban soldiers have attacked people with sticks and rifle butts. THE NEW YORK TIMES: The Taliban have pledged that women in Afghanistan will have rights “within the bounds of Islamic law,” or Shariah, under their newly established rule. But it is not clear what that will mean.
Shariah leaves considerable room for interpretation. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan in the past, they imposed a strict one, barring women from working outside the home or leaving the house without a male guardian, eliminating schooling for girls, and publicly flogging people who violated the group’s morality code.
The insurgents have not yet said how they intend to apply it now. But millions of Afghan women fear a return to the past ways.

Following a damaging two weeks in which Andrew’s accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre lodged a civil lawsuit in New York alleging he had sex with her when she was 17, and a source claimed he was a “person of interest” in the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, the duke is now caught “between a rock and a hard place,” said one expert.
There has been silence from Andrew – who denies all allegations against him – and his legal team over the latest twists in the long-running case. A day after Giuffre lodged her claims, he headed for Balmoral with his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York, in time for the opening of the grouse shooting season.

Heute ist Marina fast 37 Jahre alt. Sie müsse den Kopf schütteln, erzählt sie am Telefon, als mehrere ihrer jüngeren weiblichen Verwandten in ihrem Schlafzimmer erstmals eine Burka anprobieren. Columns of Afghan soldiers in armored vehicles and pickup trucks sped through the desert to reach Iran. Military pilots flew low and fast to the safety of Uzbekistan’s mountains.
Thousands of Afghan security force members managed to make it to other countries over the past few weeks as the Taliban rapidly seized the country. Others managed to negotiate surrenders and went back to their homes — and some kept their weapons and joined the winning side.
They were all part of the sudden atomization of the national security forces that the United States and its allies spent tens of billions of dollars to arm, train and stand against the Taliban, a two-decade effort at institution-building that vanished in just a few days.
But tens of thousands of other Afghan grunts, commandos and spies who fought to the end, despite the talk in Washington that the Afghan forces simply gave up, have been left behind. They are now on the run, hiding and hunted by the Taliban.
“There’s no way out,” said Farid, an Afghan commando, in a text message to an American soldier who fought with him. Farid, who agreed to be identified by his first name only, said he was hiding in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, trapped after the regular army units surrendered around him. “I am praying to be saved.”

Steaks au poivre par Pierre-Dominique Cécillon pour Larousse Cuisine
POUR: 2 personnes | PRÉPARATION: 10 min | CUISSON: 6 à 8 min | Difficulté: Facile
Ingrédients :
* 2 steaks assez épais de 150 à 180 g chacun (rumsteck, entrecôte, tranche ou faux-filet)
* 4 cuill. à soupe de poivre noir concassé
* 20 g de beurre
* 3 cuill. à soupe d'huile de pépins de raisins
* 4 cuill. à soupe de cognac
* 20 cl de crème fraîche
* Sel
Préparation :
1. Salez les steaks sur les deux faces. Mettez le poivre concassé dans une assiette et passez-y chaque steak, une face après l'autre, en appuyant légèrement pour que les grains adhèrent bien à la viande.
2. Dans une poêle, faites chauffer le beurre et l'huile. Saisissez les steaks à feu vif, des deux côtés. Retirez les steaks de la poêle quand ils sont à la cuisson désirée.
3. Faites griller les grains de poivre restés dans la poêle, puis versez le cognac pour déglacer.
4. Ajoutez la crème dans la poêle, en remuant bien avec une spatule en bois et en grattant pour récupérer tous les sucs. Laissez épaissir la sauce à feu vif, jusqu'à l'ébullition : elle doit être un peu brune. Sortez du feu et nappez immédiatement les steaks.
INFO : Le mélange huile-beurre permet à la poêle d'être plus chaude, sans brûler le beurre.

Quelques jours seulement après être entrés dans Kaboul, les talibans ont tenu mardi leur première conférence de presse, après une première allocution accordée dès lundi à la chaîne qatarie al-Jazeera. «Après vingt années de combat nous avons émancipé le pays», assurait avec aplomb Zabihullah Mujahid, le porte-parole du mouvement, avant de préciser qu’il s’engageait à laisser les femmes travailler «dans le respect des principes de l’islam», sans d’autre précision.
À travers l’Afghanistan, les femmes ont pourtant déjà commencé à disparaître de l’espace public, et de nombreux témoignages émergent sur de nouvelles restrictions dont elles font l’objet: certaines auraient été refoulées de l’université d’Hérat, d’autres empêchées par des talibans d’accéder à l’aéroport de Kaboul, au motif qu’il ne serait pas moral de laisser une femme voyager seule. Malik Mudassir, un journaliste afghan de la BBC, racontait mardi l’étrange atmosphère régnant dans l’hôtel qu’il occupe à Kaboul. Les employés masculins ont arrêté de se raser ; le personnel féminin a disparu ; et la musique de fond, qui résonnait en permanence dans le lobby, s’est tue. Sein Buch «Sodom» erschien zeitgleich in acht Sprachen und Martel wurde in unzählige Talkshows eingeladen, doch der Vatikan hüllte sich in Schweigen. Wer sich in den 30er-, 40er- und 50er-Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts als junger Mann irgendwie anders – eben homosexuell – fühlte, fand in der römisch-katholischen Kirche eine Oase, so Martel in seinem Buch «Sodom»: Männer, die unter Männern leben, andere Kleidung tragen und singen, das wäre für viele die Rettung gewesen, die zudem noch von der Gesellschaft akzeptiert war.

Crème brûlée par Pierre-Dominique Cécillon pour Larousse Cuisine
Pour 6 personnes. | Difficulté : facile.
Ingredients :
35 cl de crème liquide,
1 gousse de vanille,
85 g de sucre semoule,
4 jaunes d'œufs
Préparation :
1.Versez la crème liquide dans une casserole.
2.Coupez la gousse de vanille en deux dans le sens de la longueur pour en extraire les graines. Ajoutez dans la casserole les graines et la gousse de vanille ainsi que la moitié du sucre. Faites chauffer à feu modéré pendant 5 minutes environ, jusqu'à ébullition, puis retirez la gousse de vanille.
3.Dans un saladier battez vigoureusement les jaunes d'œufs et le reste du sucre jusqu'à ce que le mélange blanchisse.
4.Versez la crème bouillante sur la préparation œufs-sucre, tout en remuant.
5.Remettez le mélange à chauffer dans la casserole, et laissez épaissir. Dès que la crème commence à bouillir, changez-la de récipient pour la refroidir.
6.Répartissez la crème dans des ramequins individuels, de préférence peu profonds. Laissez refroidir complètement au réfrigérateur pendant au moins 30 minutes.
7.Au moment de servir, préchauffez le gril du four.
8.Saupoudrez la surface des ramequins d'une bonne couche de sucre roux. Placez ceux-ci sous le gril.
9.Servez la crème brûlée tiède.

You visit a bustling bar with friends on a hot evening, and enjoy cold glasses of the country's national cocktail - caipirinha, a mixture of cachaça, sugar, and lime, with lots and lots of ice.
Or just as popular - you drink cachaça neat, downing shots to toast your companions.
Yet like the nation as a whole, the spirit has had a difficult pandemic.
With bars and restaurants across Brazil closed for long periods since last spring and households not allowed to mix, sales slumped by almost a quarter in 2020.
Producers and industry leaders now hope to boost overseas orders of cachaça, in order to compensate. But as Luciano Sadi Andrade, marketing manager at distillers Companhia Müller de Bebidas, admits: "It has always been a challenge... to explain the concept of cachaça for the foreign market."
So what exactly is cachaça? Pronounced "ka-SHAS-sa", it is distilled from sugar cane juice. This, Brazil says, makes it different to rum, which is typically made from the molasses, or thick treacle, left over after sugar cane has been processed into sugar.

In Ghana hat sich die Situation queerer Menschen in den vergangenen Monaten weiter verschlechtert: Nachdem im Februar das einzige queere Zentrum in Accra von der Polizei gestürmt wurden, waren Mitglieder der Organisation LGBT+Rights Ghana im Internet und auf offener Straße massiven Anfeindungen ausgesetzt.
Einige mussten zwischenzeitlich die Stadt verlassen und sich verstecken. Im Mai wurden dann Teilnehmer*innen einer LSBTI Konferenz verhaftet und über Wochen inhaftiert. Wie LGBT+ Rights Ghana berichtete, wurde das Verfahren mittlerweile eingestellt, doch nun droht die nächste Gefahr.
Gesetzentwurf sieht weitere Kriminalisierung vor
Mittlerweile plant das Parlament ein Gesetz, was zur weiteren Kriminalisierung queerer Menschen beitragen und die Lage massiv verschärfen würde.
Sollte der Gesetzentwurf tatsächlich beschlossen werden, würde das bedeuten, dass queere Personen mit bis zu fünf Jahren Gefängnis bestraft werden könnten. Das Gesetz, das eine Antwort auf die Anschläge auf die Twin Towers war, würde dem damaligen Präsidenten George Bush die Erlaubnis erteilen, im Kampf gegen den Terrorismus die Streitkräfte einzusetzen.
Doch als Lee das Gebet des Pfarrers Nathan Baxter hörte, war ihre Entscheidung gefallen, wie die «Washington Post» schreibt. Das Visum der Korrespondentin läuft Ende des Monats aus und wird nicht verlängert. Während der Kreml seit Monaten immer mehr unabhängige russische Journalisten mit Repressionen belegt, sind ausländische Korrespondenten bisher weitgehend verschont geblieben.

À 60 ans, ce juriste pourrait devenir l’autorité religieuse suprême au sein du nouvel émirat islamique d’Afghanistan. Originaire de la province de Kandahar, terre natale du mouvement, ce Pachtoune discret a combattu les Soviétiques dans les années 1980 avec d’autres étudiants religieux de la région qui viendront par la suite constituer le noyau dur du mouvement taliban.
Plus tard, Akhundzada devient le principal conseiller religieux du mollah Omar. Après la prise de Kaboul en 1996, il préside des tribunaux islamiques puis acquiert le poste de ministre régional pour la promotion de la vertu et la répression du vice.

As the Taliban sought to consolidate control over Afghanistan on Wednesday, they faced the first challenges to their renewed rule, using force to break up protests in at least two cities, while an opposing faction vowed to hold out in one pocket of the country.
Millions of Afghans tried to parse conflicting clues about what lay in store for them and their nation, but many were not waiting to find out.
Despite Taliban assurances that there would be no reprisals against their opponents, thousands of people continued to crowd around the airport in Kabul, the capital, hoping to get a flight out of the country. Throngs rushed toward certain entrances, only to be met by Taliban troops who beat people back and fired their rifles into the air. A NATO official at the scene said 17 people were injured.
Taliban fighters used gunfire to disperse demonstrations in the northeastern city of Jalalabad and the southeastern city of Khost, with some of the protesters raising the Afghan government flags that the Taliban had taken down just days earlier. Throngs rushed toward certain entrances, only to be met by Taliban troops who beat people back and fired their rifles into the air. A NATO official at the scene said 17 people were injured.
Taliban fighters used gunfire to disperse demonstrations in the northeastern city of Jalalabad and the southeastern city of Khost, with some of the protesters raising the Afghan government flags that the Taliban had taken down just days earlier. Le bilan de l'incendie qui ravage depuis le début de la semaine la réserve naturelle de la plaine des Maures s'est alourdi, mercredi en fin d'après-midi, à deux morts et vingt-quatre blessés légers, dont dix-neuf pour des intoxications, a annoncé le préfet du Var, Evence Richard. « Il y a au moins un homme » parmi les deux victimes, a-t-il précisé lors d'une conférence de presse. Après la découverte de deux corps entièrement calcinés à Grimaud, un village dans le massif des Maures, le parquet de Draguignan a ouvert une enquête. « Le logement a été entièrement détruit par le feu », a précisé le procureur, Patrice Camberou.
Selon plusieurs proches d'une jeune femme portée disparue depuis lundi soir alors qu'elle séjournait dans un gîte à Grimaud, la seconde victime serait bien cette touriste francilienne de 32 ans. Son frère et une amie confirmaient mercredi soir sur les réseaux sociaux son décès. Contacté par l'AFP, le procureur de Draguignan, Patrice Camberou, n'a pas pu confirmer cette information, le corps n'ayant pas été encore formellement identifié: «Mais cette hypothèse est très très fortement plausible», a-t-il cependant déclaré.
