Saudi Police Arrest Shi'ites, Search for Preacher

REUTERS: RIYADH - Saudi police have arrested at least 11 Shi'ites in eastern Saudi Arabia after a firebrand preacher attacked the Sunni authorities over recent sectarian clashes, police and Shi'ite sources said on Sunday.

Tewfik al-Saif, an intellectual from the Eastern Province, said a total of 14 Shi'ites were arrested in Awwamiyya during several days of sit-ins in protest against police raids in search of preacher Nimr al-Nimr, who has gone missing.

Shi'ite website Rasid.com also reported the arrests.

Interior Ministry spokesman Mansour al-Turki confirmed that 11 men were detained on Saturday on suspicion of "disturbing public order" and an act of vandalism that caused an electricity black-out in the Shi'ite town of Awwamiyya.

He said police wanted Nimr for questioning but did not know for what reason.

Saif and a member of Nimr's family said that in a sermon in Awwamiyya this month Nimr had suggested Shi'ites could one day seek to secede from Saudi Arabia, a country that sees itself as the bastion of mainstream Sunni Islam.

Most Saudi Shi'ites live in the eastern, oil-producing part of the country. They are thought to form 10 to 15 percent of the population of 17 million Saudis, and often complain of second-class status in the kingdom. >>> © Thomson Reuters 2009 | Sunday, March 22, 2009

JUI-S for Enforcement of Sharia across Country

GEO.tv: SARGODHA: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-S chief Maulana Sami-ul-Haq said on Sunday that he was ready to fight a war for the enforcement of Sharia across the country after Swat.

Addressing a news conference here, he said that alliance of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ammal (MMA) had fell apart because its leadership went after the power politics.

JUI-S chief said that the future of democracy and present government looks bleak and disappointing, while crime rate in Swat went down to one percent following after promulgation of Sharia Law.

Turkey Could Block Rasmussen at NATO, Official Says

REUTERS: BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Turkey could block Denmark's prime minister from becoming the next NATO chief given concerns over his past stance on Turkey and a row over Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, a Turkish official said on Sunday.

Current secretary general Dutchman Jaap de Hoop Scheffer steps down on July 31. His successor is expected to be named at an April 3-4 NATO summit.

NATO diplomats and a U.S. source said on Saturday Washington had told NATO allies it would back Anders Fogh Rasmussen as the next secretary general but getting Turkey to agree would be key.

A Turkish official said the Turkish position could be set in coming days, but Rasmussen was "tainted" in Turkey's eyes.

"It may come to the veto," he told Reuters. "We will have to see." NATO leadership positions are filled by consensus among the 26-nation military pact. >>> Reporting by Paul Taylor and David Brunnstrom | Sunday, March 22, 2009

Wilders Appeals against UK Ban

RADIO NETHERLANDS WORLDWIDE: Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders has launched an official appeal against the British government's decision to ban him from entering the United Kingdom. Last month, Britain's Home Office refused the MP entry on the grounds that his opinions about Islam made him a threat to public security.

Mr Wilders had been invited to screen his film Fitna at the House of Lords by Lord Pearson of Britain's Independence Party. Upon arrival at London's Heathrow airport, the far-right MP was denied entry to the UK and sent back to the Netherlands. Mr Wilders has appealed to the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal to reverse the decision. He will be notified of the date for the hearing in 28 days time. [Source: RNW] | Saturday, March 21, 2009
Turkey's State Radio to Begin Armenian-language Broadcast

HÜRRIYET: Turkey's state radio will launch an Armenian-language channel, reports said on Friday in the latest in a series of planned foreign language broadcasting mediums being launched by the state.

The move comes as Ankara and Yerevan have been engaged in a normalization process between the neighboring countries that for decades have had no diplomatic relations.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan also said Wednesday that state-run Turkish Radio and Television Corp (TRT) would launch a radio station broadcasting in Kurdish.

The radio channels broadcasting in Armenian and Kurdish will go on air in "two to three months", Reuters and CNNTurk reported citing Anatolian Agency.

"At this stage, we will refrain from any comments," an Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters when asked about the report of the planned radio station on Friday.

TRT also plans to launch a Persian TV channel and a news channel broadcasting in English next year, Friday's reports added.

Turkey recently took steps to boost the cultural and democratic rights of Kurds with the Jan. 1 launch of TRT-6, a TV channel that airs in Kurdish 24 hours a day. [Source: Hürriyet] Sunday, March 22, 2009
Canada Bans Outspoken British MP

THE CANADIAN PRESS: OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney will not intervene in a decision to ban British anti-war MP George Galloway from Canada despite opposition claims of censorship.

Galloway termed the decision "idiotic" after Citizenship and Immigration Canada deemed the outspoken politician inadmissible on security grounds. He was exploring his legal options Friday, vowing to fight the ruling with "all means at my disposal."

Kenney's office noted Galloway has expressed sympathy for the Taliban cause in Afghanistan and provided financial support to the Palestinian group Hamas, listed in Canada as a terrorist organization.

Speaking in Calgary on Friday, Kenney said that while he has authority to overrule his officials, he will not provide special treatment to the 54-year-old Scottish MP.

Galloway "last week publicly called for a coup d'etat in Egypt and the overthrow of the government there while at the same time delivering aid and resources to Hamas, which is a banned illegal terrorist organization," Kenney said.

"In this case, I believe folks that are supporting and promoting and helping terrorist organizations are not needed to visit Canada." >>> Copyright © 2009 The Canadian Press | Saturday, March 21, 2009

Bailout Fallout: Uncle Sam's Sharia Board

EUROPE NEWS: At your service, American Taxpayer! AIG's Shariah Advisory Board. Meet Moe, Larry and Curly. I mean, Mohamed, Muhammad, and Mohammed.* As members of the AIG Takaful Shariah Advisory Board, they really work for you and me, the American taxpayer, ever since we the people bought an 80 percent stake in the bankrupt insurance company.

How's that for bait and switch? While we agonize over chump-change AIG bonuses, we ignore the fact we're paying for the subversion of liberty and justice for all by funding AIG's promotion and entrenchment of sharia--Jew-, Christian-, and humanist-hostile supremacist Islamic law. As of December 2008, by the way, AIG Takaful insurance products went on sale in the USA under the ironically named Lexington Takaful Solutions.

Religulous: Borat-style Satire on Faith Causes Outrage

THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY: British release for controversial US movie will increase friction between atheists and believers

Photobucket
The Pope caused global outrage last week when he suggested on a trip to Africa not only that Aids 'cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms' but that they 'even aggravate the problems'. Photo (AP) courtesy of The Independent on Sunday

A Borat-style documentary lampooning the world's religions through interviews with their leaders is to open in Britain next week – and, if the US experience is anything to go, it is certain to spark controversy.

Religulous – the title is a provocative combination of "religion" and "ridiculous" – caused outrage across the Atlantic, with Catholics complaining they were the main target of the film, directed by Larry Charles. He also directed Borat, the satire on US mores starring Sacha Baron Cohen as the Kazakhstan reporter. The American comedian and satirist Bill Maher takes the Cohen role.

Maher has said that while the film was meant to be funny, it wasn't just meant to poke fun at religion, but demolish it. "I was raised a Catholic," he said, "but by the time I became an adult, scientific thought and rational evidence led me to believe otherwise. You know, when I was a kid and got a cavity, I had mercury drilled into my teeth. Then, when I got older, they drilled it out – and you can do the same with religion."

The film opens shortly after the Pope was condemned for suggesting condoms "aggravate the problem" of Aids, causing a frantic Vatican damage-limitation exercise.

Emboldened atheists have run slogans on the side of buses proclaiming "There is probably no God" – and a campaign by Christians to undermine that attracted record numbers of complaints last week to the Advertising Standards Authority. >>> By Andrew Johnson and Emily Dugan | Sunday, March 22, 2009

The move follows a series of incidents in recent years in which people have been banned from displaying the English flag on the grounds that it is racist and could offend Muslims because of St George’s association with the Crusades.

But Mr Johnson believes such arguments are unjustified and plans a series of events around St George’s Day on April 23 to honour the historical achievements of England and the English. Cripes!

>>> ATS | Dimanche 22 Mars 2009
Pauline Hanson Loses Re-election Bid as Paper Apologies [sic] over Nude Photos

TIMESONLINE: The far-right Australian politician Pauline Hanson has received an apology over the publication of 30-year-old raunchy photographs of a near naked woman that local newspapers incorrectly claimed were her, a day after she lost a bid for re-election.

The apology - in which a Sunday newspaper admitted they were “conned” by Jack Johnson, who took the photos and claimed he was a former boyfriend of Ms Hanson - came as the political firebrand lost her bid for a seat in the Queensland parliament, ending her controversial 13-year political career.

Ms Hanson, the former leader of the One Nation political party, had vowed to quit politics for good if she failed to win a seat as an independent in the Queensland parliament during Saturday’s elections.

However on Sunday she declined to rule out running again. “Look, I don’t know,” Ms Hanson said. “I really need to think about this.” >>> Sophie Tedmanson in Sydney | Sunday, March 22, 2009

Romanian Doctor Suspended for Calling Asian Colleagues 'Orang-utans'

Suspended: Dr Silvia Baciu at the General Medical Council. Photo courtesy of MailOnline

MAIL Online: A doctor who described her Asian colleagues as ‘orang-utans’ has been suspended by the General Medical Council.

Dr Silvia Baciu, 43, made the comments after claiming she had been subjected to insulting and threatening treatment because she was a white European.

But the NHS Trust she worked for accused her of racism and the GMC yesterday criticised her ‘unacceptable racial behaviour’.

Dr Baciu, who is originally from Romania, worked as a Senior House Officer in anaesthetics at Basildon Hospital, Essex, from June 2004 to November 2005.

After she left the department, she reuested a meeting with the Trust to discuss alleged discrimination at the hands of her colleagues. She prepared a 12-page document to support her claims.

The GMC heard that she had written: ‘It’s not my fault that in the heads of senior Asian colleagues, there’s no difference between an educated white woman and a donkey. It’s not my fault that I was born in Europe and not in South-East Asia, like other trainees. It’s not my fault that I’m white.

‘I dare to suggest to you, mon cher, that ( some doctors) are exempt from known immigration laws.

‘The brainy Asian males of this department can’t place themselves before the law.’

Dr Baciu, who lives in Northampton, added in the document that she feared that European science would ‘disappear’ because there were so many Asian doctors.

She added: ‘The orang-utan section of the department is ready for action and I assure you of their effectiveness.’

Later in the document, Dr Baciu claimed she had been threatened and harassed and found attitudes towards her ‘very hard to endure’.

The GMC was told that Dr Baciu had problems adjusting to working in the UK. Craig Ferguson, for the GMC, also said there were concerns over her communication skills and her ability to complete written assessments.

Dr Baciu said that the word ‘orang-utan’ did not refer to the doctors’ appearance, but their aggressive and threatening behaviour, both in public and private. >>> By Daily Mail Reporter | Friday, March 20, 2009

Somali Islamic Militia Behead Rival Clerics

INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE: MOGADISHU, Somalia: Extremist Islamic militiamen beheaded two clerics from a rival group after stopping the vehicle taking them to be treated for wounds suffered in a gun battle, a spokesman for the clerics' group said.

The clerics were members of Ahlu Sunna Waljama which had been fighting against extremist al-Shabab militiamen in the town of Balad, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the capital Mogadishu, said spokesman Sheik Abdullahi Sheik Abu Yusuf.

Abu Yusuf blamed al-Shabab for the beheadings on Thursday but said the clerics were not involved in the earlier fighting. Al-Shabab controls large chunks of the country where it imposes a harsh brand of Islam, while battling government troops and African Union peacekeepers.

Abu Yusuf said the clerics were unarmed when they were wounded. "They did not take part in the recent clashes," Abu Yusuf told The Associated Press late Friday. >>> The Associated Press | Saturday, March 21, 2009

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary yesterday set out how he would deal with the Business Secretary if Britain was ruled under Sharia law.

At a bizarre press conference he called in London, he said Lord Mandelson would be RE-EDUCATED about the “evils” of homosexuality.

But the minister would be EXECUTED if he confessed to a male liaison.

Choudary, 41, who chillingly struck a pose like a video still of terror chief Osama bin Laden, said of Mandy: “He would not be allowed to speak openly about homosexuality.”

He added: “If a man likes another man, it can happen. But if you go on to fulfil your desire, there is a punishment to follow.

NAME: All Homosexuals Should Be Stoned to Death, Says Muslim Preacher of Hate

Hate, hate and more hate: Anjem Choudary (centre), flanked by two cohorts, prepares to give a press conference on Friday in which he says homosexuals should be stoned to death. Photo: MailOnline

All homosexuals should face stoning to death, a Muslim preacher of hate declared yesterday.

Anjem Choudary, the firebrand cleric who wants to see Britain ruled by Sharia law, said such a regime was the only way to fix the country's ills.

Under it, adulterers and homosexuals would be killed by stoning. Asked if that would include anybody - even a Cabinet minister such as Business Secretary Lord Mandelson - Choudary responded with an astonishing diatribe.

He said: 'If a man likes another man, it can happen, but if you go on to fulfil your desire, if it is proved, then there is a punishment to follow. You don't stone to death unless there are four eyewitnesses. It is a very stringent procedure.

'There are some people who are attracted to donkeys but that does not mean it is right.'

Choudary was speaking at a press conference in London arranged by Muslim extremists to justify their protest in Luton last week against soldiers returning home from Iraq.

His incendiary remarks immediately prompted calls for him to be investigated by police. Tory MP Patrick Mercer said: 'These statements show the depravity of this man's beliefs. They must incite hatred and encourage terrorism, and I would encourage the Metropolitan Police to investigate them as rigorously as possible.'

The Rev Sharon Ferguson, chief executive of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement, said: 'This is appalling. The police should look very closely at what has been said to see if there is any action they should be taking.' >>> By Sam Greenhill | Saturday, March 21, 2009
Max Hastings: Seize Their Porches and Throw Them in Jail! Shameless Bankers Are Worse than Train Robbers

MAIL Online: The best suggestion of the past week about how to punish Sir Fred Goodwin is that he should be obliged to report personally at an RBS branch to collect his pension cheques. If customers do not lynch him, staff will.

But too much attention has focused on Goodwin.

Of course, he is contemptible. But he is only one among thousands of monstrously over-rewarded merchants of failure.

At least the former RBS chief executive is no longer at his desk. Almost all the others still occupy fat, padded chairs in City institutions. The time has come to address the entire robber banker culture.

Lord Turner’s impressive Financial Services Authority report this week promised an end of ‘light touch’ regulation. Turner makes plain his distaste for the City’s reward structure.

I would go much further. In dealing with the sort of people who have created a disaster which will cripple this country’s finances for decades to come, drastic sanctions will be necessary.

Statistics from America show that top executives of the seven biggest failed financial institutions have taken home $464 million in alleged performance pay since 2005, while their businesses have racked up $107 billion losses in the past two years alone.

British bankers have profited from rip-offs identical in kind, if not quite in scale.

Yet those responsible remain convinced they are entitled to seven-figure remuneration, even though it’s taxpayers who are having to stump up the money.

It is as if a man who has driven a Bentley into a brick wall demands that the manufacturer should present him with a new one, because it is the only car he is used to driving.

These bankers think they are above criticism and the lesson for us, the public, is that we need to get the boot in and keep kicking.

Only thus might we begin to change the wicked culture which has brought Western nations, Britain prominent among them, to the edge of ruin. >>> Max Hastings | Saturday, March 21, 2009

THE GUARDIAN: AIG Warns Staff to Travel in Pairs after Death Threats over Bonuses

Executives fear for safety after £115m payout / Hide firm's logo and park in lit areas, employees told

The embattled US insurance company AIG has warned its staff to travel in pairs after dark, not to wear company logos and to avoid discussing their work outside the office, as public outrage boils over at multimillion-dollar executive bonuses.

AIG's employees have been subjected to death threats since the company handed out $165m (£115m) in "retention" awards to employees in its disastrously loss-making financial products division this week.

Recipients of the bonuses said they feared for their own safety. A union-backed campaign group is today taking protesters on a bus tour of AIG executives' homes in a wealthy enclave of Connecticut known as the "gold coast".

In a leaked company-wide memo, AIG's corporate security team this week warned staff to take special precautions "due to a growing sense of public attention fuelled by increased media scrutiny".

The memo, posted on the New York website Gawker, urges staff to "avoid wearing any AIG apparel (bags, shirts, umbrellas etc) with the company insignia". It advises workers to take off identity badges when they go outside, to report the presence of any strangers, and to call the emergency services if they think they are being followed. "At night, when possible, travel in pairs and always park in well-lit areas," it reads. >>> Andrew Clark in New York | Saturday, March 21, 2009

Change Your Attitude, Say the Iranians to the Americans

TIMESONLINE: Aides to President Ahmadinejad welcomed the appeal for a ‘new beginning’ but urged the US to change its attitude

Iran cautiously welcomed Barack Obama’s videotaped message for a “new beginning” between the US and Tehran yesterday, but said that the new Administration needed a change in attitude for relations between them to improve.

Aliakbar Javanfekr, an aide to President Ahmadinejad of Iran, reacted to the appeal by saying: “The Iranian nation has shown that it can forget hasty behaviour.” Iran, he said, would “not show its back” to Mr Obama if the US put its words into practice, but the new Administration needed “a fundamental change in attitude”.

Mr Javanfekr added that “minor changes will not end the differences” existing between Tehran and Washington. “Obama has talked of change but has taken no practical measures to address America’s past mistakes in Iran,” he said.

>>> Reuters/AFP/cn | Freitag, 20. Anti-gay US Christians Theaten to Picket London Primary School

THE GUARDIAN: Kansas fundamentalists plan protest against lessons about homosexual relationships

A group of American Christian fundamentalists whose slogan is "God hates fags" is threatening to picket an east London primary school over its anti-homophobia work.

A row broke out at George Tomlinson primary school in Waltham Forest, north-east London, earlier this month when some parents pulled their children out of lessons planned for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender history month. The school used books on homosexual relationships, in one case between two male penguins.

Members of the Westboro Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas – which has been the subject of a Louis Theroux television exposé – say they will picket the school next Friday afternoon.

The group's founder, Reverend Fred Phelps, was barred from entering Britain last month to stop him spreading "extremism and hatred". He had intended to picket a play about a homophobic killing.

A message on the group's website announcing their plans said: "God hates the UK and the Tomlinson school fag tyranny, where conscientious parents face religious persecution for withdrawing their children from lessons on lying fag so-called history." >>> Polly Curtis, Education Editor | Friday, March 20, 2009

Barack Obama Calls for 'New Beginning' with Iran

THE TELEGRAPH: Barack Obama, the US President, has called for a “new beginning” of "honest" relations with Iran in a video released on YouTube.

Obama’s Nowruz message to Iran

In a dramatic reversal of White House policy, the president announced that America was determined to pursue “constructive ties” with its former arch enemy.

He pledged that Tehran could take its “rightful place” in the world if it renounced terror in favour of peace.

The two nations have had no diplomatic ties for 28 years.

George W Bush, Mr Obama's predecessor, famously banded Iran within a so-called “Axis of Evil”, along with Syria and North Korea.

Mr Obama said: My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community.”

He added: “For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained.

“But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together.

“Indeed, you will be celebrating your new year in much the same way that we Americans mark our holidays – by gathering with friends and family; exchanging gifts and stories, and looking to the future with a renewed sense of hope.”

Mr Obama’s comments, timed to coincide with the start of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, are due to air today on various Middle East networks carrying English and Farsi subtitles. The format of the message suggests it is an attempt to reach the Iranian people directly. >>> By Mark Coleman in Los Angeles | Friday, March 20, 2009

The deal was part of an arrangement negotiated by the lawyer Robert Barnett with Crown Publishing, a division of Random House, involving an abridged version of his book "Dreams From My Father" for children.

According to the Washington Times, half will go to Mr Obama and half to the publisher, who will carry out the abridging for the president's approval.

The deal is on top of nearly $2.5 million in book royalties paid to Mr Obama last year for "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope" memoirs. >>> By Toby Harnden in Washington | Thursday, March 19, 2009

P*** O**, Big Brother! I’ll Look After My Own Health, Thank You Very Much!

THE TELEGRAPH: Well-meaning 'snoops' are being recruited by the Government to nag their colleagues, family and neighbours into living healthier lives.

Photobucket
Photo thanks to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung

Public health "mentors" will be enlisted by the NHS to offer 'on the spot' advice in their local neighbourhood when they see people smoking, eating or drinking too much.

The Government hopes that the volunteers will help to get across its messages on healthy living in a new and influential way but the plans have been criticised as evidence of the creeping 'nanny state'.

Speaking at the Royal Society of Arts yesterday , Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, said mentors could be "amazingly successful" and that he hoped that they could revolutionise the nation's health.

The mentors, who as volunteers are not paid, are expected to work to influence the people around them, offering advice to workmates, family and friends about how they should change their unhealthy habits.

Eating a third fried breakfast of the week in the office canteen, having a drink 'for the road' at your local pub or chain-smoking another cigarette while waiting for the bus could all see the mentors spring into action to offer the Government's advice.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said that it was hoped that mentors would spread the word among "people they come in contact with on a daily basis, including their friends and neighbours, and also be able to point them to NHS services, such as smoking cessation services". Vatican Insiders Declare the Pope a 'Disaster'

THE TELEGRAPH: Pope Benedict's repeated gaffes and the Vatican's inability to manage his message in the internet era are threatening to undermine his papacy, Vatican insiders have said.

The Holy See is struggling to contain international anger over the Pope's claim on his first official visit to Africa that Aids "cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems".

The Pope's remarks about condoms, and a recent furore over his lifting of the 20-year excommunication of a British bishop who has questioned the Holocaust, has left him looking isolated and out of touch, prompting calls for a radical shake-up of the way the Holy See delivers its message.

The Pope is isolated and fails to adequately consult his advisers, said a Vatican source with 20 years' knowledge of the Holy See.

Another Vatican insider described Pope Benedict's four-year-old papacy as "a disaster", recalling the pontiff's previous inflammatory remarks on Islam and homosexuality.

"He's out of touch with the real world," the Italian insider said. "On the condom issue, for example, there are priests and bishops in Africa who accept that condoms are a key part of the fight against Aids, and yet the pope adheres to this very conservative line that they encourage promiscuity. The Vatican is far removed from the reality on the ground." >>> By Nick Squires in Rome | Thursday, March 19, 2009

Obama the Showman Demeans His Office by Appearing on the Jay Leno Tonight Show

TIMESONLINE: He's in the midst of the worst economic crisis in 80 years, his Treasury Secretary is facing calls to resign and questions are being asked of his Administration, yet President Obama today prepares to fight back by treading a path usually reserved for Hollywood actors.

In an unprecedented step for a sitting president, Mr Obama will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, on which he will attempt to explain to an increasingly angry public how $165million in bonuses were paid to employees of the failed insurance company AIG after it was bailed out with public money.

National anger over the case stems from the fact that the bonuses, awarded to 418 employees and including $1 million each to 73 people, were paid after the company had to be rescued by $170 billion of state cash. The bailout represented the biggest injection of public money into a single company since the financial crisis began last year, and another $30bn will be paid soon.

The controversy has already taken its toll on Timothy Geithner, Mr Obama's new Treasury Secretary, whose position has become increasingly fragile. He has faced repeated Republican criticism - and at least one call to resign - for not stopping the bonus payments, along with questions over when he became aware of them. Head Teacher Who Suffered Stress from Racism Accusations Wins £400,000 Damages

THE TELEGRAPH: A headteacher whose health and career were ruined by false accusations of racism and religious discrimination at a primary school dominated by Muslims has won £400,000 in damages.

Erica Connor was forced into early retirement through stress after governors at New Monument School in Woking turned her into a scapegoat by claiming she was Islamophobic.

But the local education authority failed to help her as its "excessively tolerant" officers were more worried about complaints to the race equality watchdog than her suffering.

The High Court agreed that the Surrey County Council was negligent in not stepping in to support the headteacher, and ordered it to pay £407,781 in compensation. This includes damages for psychiatric injury, loss of income and pension, medical expenses and the premature end of the career she loved.

As she left court, Mrs Connor, 57, said: "The last five years have been a long haul at great personal cost to myself and my family, so I am thrilled that justice has prevailed.

"It is so unfortunate that matters have taken so long to resolve and at such a financial cost, but I finally feel vindicated in terms of the accusations of racism and Islamophobia against myself.

"For a protracted length of time I was subjected to dreadful pressure from a small group of individuals, unrepresentative of the local community, without the support I would have expected from Surrey County Council." >>> By Martin Beckford, Religious Affairs Correspondent | Thursday, March 19, 2009

Iowa Kosher Slaughterhouse Supervisor to Be Sentenced on Federal Immigration Charges

SEATTLE TIMES: A supervisor arrested after a massive immigration raid at an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday afternoon in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A supervisor arrested after a massive immigration raid at an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday afternoon in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Juan Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza, who supervised four departments at Agriprocessors Inc. in Postville, has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to hire illegal immigrants and one count of aiding and abetting the hiring of illegal immigrants.

He was arrested last summer following a May raid in which 389 people were arrested. A few months later he struck a plea deal with prosecutors and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Pelosi: Immigration Enforcement "Un-American"

MYSTATELINE.COM: San Francisco, CA -- Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says the enforcement of existing immigration laws is "un-American." Pelosi made the comments before a group of both legal and illegal immigrants and their families in San Francisco recently.

While condemning raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Pelosi said, quote, "who in [in] this country would not want to change a policy of kicking in doors in the middle of the night and sending a parent away from their families? It must be stopped. What value system is that? I think it's un-American."

Speaking before a mostly Hispanic gathering at a San Francisco church, the Speaker went on to call the immigrants, quote, "very, very patriotic" while telling the crowd they were, quote, "taking responsibility for our country's future."

Not everyone in the crowd was pleased with Pelosi's sentiments.

Rick Oltman, with Californians for Population Stabilization, said he was embarrassed by what Pelosi said.

Oltman charged the speaker with pandering to the crowd by exhorting illegals for taking responsibility for our country's future.

Oltman said Pelosi was insulting American citizens who consider themselves to be patriotic and obey the rule of law. [Source: MyStateLine.com] Copyright 2009 by Newsroom Solutions | Thursday, March 19, 2009

Obama to Visit Turkey on April 6-7: Turkish PM

AFP: ANKARA — US President Barack Obama will visit Turkey on April 6-7, following an invitation from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to attend a forum aimed at fostering dialogue between the West and the Muslim world.

Erdogan said late Wednesday he had invited Obama to attend a meeting of the Alliance of Civilizations initiative in Istanbul on April 7 and expressed surprise that the US president responded with a proposal also for an official visit to Ankara the day before.

"I didn't expect (an official visit) that soon," Erdogan said in an interview with TGRT television, adding that Obama was expected to attend the Istanbul forum as well.

"The official visit will be probably combined with the Alliance of Civilizations meeting... That is very meaningful for us," he said.

Predominantly Muslim, secular Turkey is a NATO member and a close ally of the United States in a troubled region.

The UN-backed Alliance of Civilizations initiative was launched in 2005 in a bid to help overcome prejudices and misunderstandings between different cultures and religions. It is co-chaired by Turkey and Spain. >>> Copyright © 2009 AFP | Thursday, March 19, 2009

Iran [Says] Uncovers Foreign-backed Internet Plot

REUTERS: TEHRAN - Iran has arrested a number of people accused of setting up anti-religious and obscene web sites as part of a foreign-backed plot to undermine the Islamic Republic, Iranian media reported on Thursday.

The semi-official Fars News Agency listed the initials of 26 people it said were involved in the case but it did not make clear whether all of them had been detained in an operation by the intelligence arm of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

They were part of networks supported by foreign security services, it said, without naming the countries.

US to Aid in Rescue of Persecuted Yemen Jews

HAARETZ: The United States government is taking part in efforts to extricate Jews in Yemen who have been the subject of physical harassment from their Muslim neighbors.

The rescue efforts focus on 300 Jews from the Yemenite town of Rada, north of the capital Sanaa.

The State Department has maintained a weeks-long dialog with Yemenite authorities over the fate of the country's Jewish community. The issue took on more urgency following the murder this past December of a prominent activist in the Jewish community, Moshe Yaish Nahari.

It is unclear if the U.S. involvement in helping facilitate the Jews' exit from Yemen is the result of an initiative by Washington or an appeal from Israel. The operation is the brainchild of the umbrella group United Jewish Communities, which is being aided by other organizations specializing in absorbing and resettling refugees. >>> By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent | Thursday, March 19, 2009
