Ventilateurs, glaces, salades...

Jeffrey Sachs an Bundeskanzler Merz: Verhindern Sie offenen Krieg mit Russland!

BERLINER ZEITUNG : Der Ökonom und Diplomat Jeffrey Sachs fordert Bundeskanzler Merz auf, mit Russlands Präsident Putin unverzüglich Gespräche über Frieden in Europa zu beginnen. Der Brief im Wortlaut.

Offener Brief an Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz

Sehr geehrter Herr Bundeskanzler Merz,

Nigel Farage’s Far-Right Party Is Now Central to British Politics

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Nigel Farage’s anti-immigrant, populist agenda has helped his party, Reform U.K., emerge from the fringe of politics in Britain. But it faces an uphill climb to win power.

This screenshot has been taken from this NYT article. | Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform U.K. Party, last month at a campaign rally in Scotland ahead of British council elections. | Paul Reid/Getty Images

Until recently, Nigel Farage was the leader of small but loud political start-ups in Britain.

For decades, his anti-Europe parties sought to shift the country’s trajectory, using anti-immigrant and nationalist rhetoric to lead the Brexit campaign. But until 2024, Mr. Farage had never been elected to Parliament, and his movement remained on the fringe, unable to dislodge Britain’s two big political parties.

That is all changing.

In thousands of contests for municipal councils across England on May 7, Mr. Farage’s party, Reform U.K., surged past the Tories of Margaret Thatcher fame and grabbed control of councils from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party to become, arguably, the most successful political force in the country.

In just 15 hours on Election Day, Reform won 1,454 council races and surged to victories in the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments. Now, Mr. Farage presides over a national party with reasonable ambitions to take control of Parliament in the next general election, which must be held by 2029. That would make him Britain’s next prime minister.

“We have professionalized the party,” he boasted on May 8, calling the election results “a big, big day not just for our party but for a complete reshaping of British politics in every way.” » | Michael D. Shear | Michael D. Shear writes about the fracturing of British politics and the rise of populists in the U.K. and across Europe. | Wednesday, May 27, 2026

It is to be hoped that my fellow compatriots will have the good sense not to vote into power the very man who made them heaps poorer and who robbed them of their rights as citizens of Europe. (Yes, Europe, because the EU and Europe are largely synonymous despite what the far-right loons would have you believe.) But I am not holding my breath!

Nigel Farage is a self-enriching charlatan. His guiding principle, or pole star, is himself and how he can fill his bank accounts and bolster his ego. He is a man of no sound principles. Don’t believe me? Just look at how he enriched himself over a period of about TWENTY years from the EU—from 1999 to 2020—whilst doing sod all for the money, hardly ever attending Parliament in either Brussels or Strasbourg. All the while decrying the institution, and all the while working hard behind the scenes to undermine the institution! What an unprincipled SOB he is! And my compatriots are stupid enough to vote for him!

Add to all this, Nigel Farage did Vladimir Putin’s dirty work for him. Vlad’s wet dream has been to weaken and break-up the European Union, and Farage did his bidding.

Were Farage ever to become the prime minister of this once noble country, it will be a very sad day for British democracy (whatever is left of it), and it will also be the harbinger of dark days ahead.

That he is big chums with the corrupt Trump and his chumps is a further indictment on him and casts a dark shadow on his character and intentions. It is a classic case of birds of a feather flocking together!

For the record, this country’s future lies in Europe and the European Union. It does not lie across the Atlantic with the far-right loons who govern America. Eastward ho! Ir’s written in the stars, my fellow countrymen! — © Mark Alexander

At the Epicenter of A.I., Pope Leo’s Warnings Are Dismissed

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Pope Leo XIV’s spiritual message on artificial intelligence arrived as Silicon Valley’s A.I. enthusiasts pursue their own spirituality through technology.

When Pope Leo XIV presented a 42,300-word open letter to the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics on Monday, calling for protections against the rise of artificial intelligence, he was joined by Christopher Olah, a co-founder of Anthropic, which is one of the tech industry’s leading A.I. companies.

As Leo urged corporate executives, government regulators and other citizens of the world to safeguard humanity from the dangers of A.I., he included Mr. Olah as a symbol of the dialogue he hopes to foster between the leaders of the spiritual and technological worlds.

But for Jeremy Nixon, Monday’s gathering at the Vatican showed that those two worlds are far from aligned. While the pope said that A.I. was fundamentally not human, Mr. Nixon, a well-connected figure in the Bay Area’s frenetic A.I. scene, argued that Mr. Olah’s remarks seemed to hint at the opposite.

“They are not in dialogue,” Mr. Nixon said during an interview at A.G.I. House, a San Francisco “hacker house” with deep ties to many of the people who helped create the A.I. technologies discussed in the pope’s encyclical. “Their perspectives are distinct.”

The difference between the humanist’s view of A.I.’s risks and the technologist’s dream of what it could become is something that has long been discussed in Mr. Nixon’s community. “It is the reason the community exists,” Mr. Nixon said. “It is its underlying purpose.” » | Cade Metz | Reporting from San Francisco | Tuesday, May 26, 2026

May 26, 2026 | US President Donald Trump's administration has announced the creation of a $1.776 billion fund for Americans deemed to be victims of political "weaponization," like January 6 Capitol riot defendants. But the announcement has brought in a lawsuit from a coalition of Trump critics adding to mounting backlash over the fund, seen as an additional act of corruption.

Franco’s Spain in the 1950s: How the Dictatorship Gained Legitimacy | Full Documentary

May 22, 2026 | In the 1950s, Spain under Francisco Franco entered a new phase known as the “Leaden Age.” After years of international isolation following World War II in 1945, the regime began to regain legitimacy. Key agreements, such as the 1953 Pact of Madrid with the United States and the 1955 admission of Spain to the United Nations, marked a turning point in Franco’s foreign policy and international standing.

These developments brought economic opportunities and a sense of stability to the country. While Spain appeared to move forward, political opposition weakened and resistance largely disappeared. Behind this controlled progress, Franco’s dictatorship remained firmly in place. This period reveals how international recognition and economic change helped secure the long-term survival of one of Europe’s most enduring authoritarian regimes.

Dinu Lipatti Plays Schubert Impromptu in G-Flat Major (with Preluding)

Sep 16, 2017 | A recording of Dinu Lipatti's playing Schubert's Impromptu in G-Flat Major D.899 (Op.90) No.3 at his legendary final recital at the Besançon International Music Festival on September 16, 1950. EMI first issued Lipatti's performance of two Schubert Impromptus from the recital on a 5-LP French Columbia set in 1955 and then the complete recital in 1957, first on French Columbia and Angel Records (in the US) and when the performance received such universal acclaim it was released worldwide. Particularly noted was the fact that Lipatti played warm-up arpeggios (preluding) prior to the Bach and Mozart works in the program - however, for reasons completely unknown, EMI never released Lipatti's preluding prior to the Schubert Impromptus or the Chopin Waltzes, despite these having been recorded and existing on the original Radiodiffusion Française broadcast recording. …

The Bankers Who Funded Hitler — And Who Were Never Punished | WW2

Feb 20, 2026 | In the spring of 1943, an American banker travelled freely through Nazi Germany, held meetings with Reichsbank officials in Berlin, and boarded a German escort vessel back to Switzerland. Nazi U-boats had standing orders not to sink his ship. His name was Thomas McKittrick, and he was the president of the most powerful international bank in the world.

This is not a conspiracy theory. Every institution, every document, and every name in this video is a matter of verified historical record — sitting in the National Archives, in declassified Treasury memos, and in the minutes of the Nuremberg proceedings.

What you won't find in most history books is the full story of how Wall Street bankrolled the economic conditions that brought Hitler to power, how Standard Oil shared critical war technology with Nazi Germany while withholding it from the US military, how Chase National Bank kept its Paris branch open under Nazi occupation and reported growing profits to Manhattan, how the Bank for International Settlements laundered looted Nazi gold throughout the war, how Prescott Bush — grandfather of two US presidents — had his assets seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act, and how a Swedish banking dynasty quietly played both sides and walked away to build a $60 billion empire.

Most of these men were never prosecuted. Most were promoted. And the systems they built are still running today. This is what economic history actually looks like.

Bernie Sanders Unloads on Billionaires at ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ Rally

May 25, 2026 | Bernie Sanders delivered a fiery keynote speech at the “Fighting Oligarchy” rally in Orono, Maine, blasting billionaires, corporate power, and economic inequality in America.

Joined by Maine candidates Graham Platner and Troy Jackson, Sanders called for a political revolution focused on workers’ rights, healthcare, affordable housing, and taxing the ultra-wealthy.

During the rally, Sanders argued that the top 1% controls enormous wealth and political influence while ordinary Americans struggle with wages, healthcare costs, and housing.

He also criticized media concentration, the Citizens United ruling, and corporate influence over government.

The Vermont senator proposed a 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires and urged Americans to unite against what he described as an “oligarchic system” benefiting the rich at the expense of working families.

Bernie Sanders is the man who should be inhabiting the White House, Bernie Sanders is the man who should be president. If only American voters were smart enough to know what’s best for them!

Most Americans fear Bernie Sanders, believing him to be a “radical socialist”! Fact is, he is nothing of the sort. Were he to be running for political office here in Europe, he’d be considered a middle of the road, moderate candidate. But to pro-capitalist, far-right loons, he’s considered to be a far-left socialist outlier. Go figure!

If Americans were to listen closely to his message(s), what this gentleman wants for his compatriots is fairness. He is NOT against rich people at all. He simply wants them to pay their fair share, he wants them to contribute a relatively small portion of their wealth to the state in the form of taxes, for the common good.

After all, America’s infrastructure is falling apart. America’s poor live “paycheck to paycheck”. Millions of Americans cannot afford any healthcare, because they cannot afford the extremely hefty insurance premiums. Furthermore, increasingly and disturbingly, the one-time middle classes are losing their homes and are becoming homeless or are reduced to living in trailer parks!

What Bernie Sanders wants for America is universal healthcare, free at the point of delivery, just like all civilised countries offer their citizens. After all, if a regime such as Trump’s can squander between one and two billion dollars a day on an illicit and unnecessary war, and if it can offer the already superrich tax breaks and severely reduced tax demands, then it surely can afford to offer the people free healthcare. Universal healthcare is not socialism in action; it is merely Christianity in action! Just imagine being older with a serious chronic illness and not having the means even to visit a doctor, still less receive treatment for that illness! What a fix to be in! What a fate! And this in a country which calls itself “Christian”!

My message to Americans is this: Bernie is your man. If you Americans ever had the good sense to vote for Bernie, you, and the rest of the world, would see emerging and rising like Pheonix from the ashes a very different, far fairer, far gentler America : An America worthy of respect; and an America to be admired. — © Mark Alexander

Trump Demand for Gulf Countries to Recognise Israel Reportedly Met with Stunned Silence | ABC NEWS

May 26, 2026 | US President Donald Trump is demanding Arab states formally recognise Israel and sign the Abraham Accords as part of efforts to secure peace with Iran in the Middle East. The request, initially made in an audio-visual link up, was reportedly met with a silence so long the US President asked if the leaders were still on the line. Saudi Arabia has signalled it will not accept the request unless a deal on Palestinian statehood is guaranteed and Israeli forces withdraw from the Palestinian territories. ABC global affairs editor Laura Tingle says the US president’s demands suggest he is attempting to blame Gulf states for stifling negotiations for a truce with Iran.

Iceland, Rattled by Trump, Weighs Joining the E.U.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Iceland has stood apart from the rest of Europe. But President Trump’s threats to Greenland have provoked a reconsideration.

Iceland is in Europe. But it is not in the European Union.

For a long time, that was just fine for Iceland, which has fiercely protected its independence — and its control over its fishing industry.

Not so much anymore. In recent months, the top of the world has felt precarious as President Trump repeatedly threatened to “get” Greenland, Iceland’s closest neighbor. And the 400,000 or so Icelanders have been seriously debating the once unthinkable: Has the time come to try to join the bloc?

“The Greenland crisis definitely hit a nerve,” Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir said in February, in an interview at her office in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital.

Now, she said, foreign policy is more prominent in voters’ minds: “Things have definitely shifted.”

Iceland is heading toward a referendum as soon as this summer on whether to plunge into exploratory talks with the European Union about membership. The process could take years, but the fact that there is a big debate signals a real change. » | Amelia Nierenberg | Visuals by Sergey Ponomarev | Amelia Nierenberg and Sergey Ponomarev sailed with cod fishers, flew with the Coast Guard and visited with officials, hot dog vendors and others across Iceland to report this article. | Tuesday, May 26, 2026

Out of Gas, Cubans Cook With Charcoal and Wood to Survive

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The U.S. oil blockade has left millions without cooking gas. In Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of the Cuban revolution, apartment tower residents resort to charcoal and firewood.

On a recent night, Yusimi Castellano crouched over her squat iron stove, arranging charcoal and gently placing the Styrofoam and the plastic she used as kindling over it. She used a cigarette lighter to start a small fire.

Noxious smoke billowed through her 18th floor apartment, eventually sweeping out toward the former military barracks where the Cuban Revolution is said to have begun and the verdant mountains that wrap around Santiago de Cuba, the country’s second-largest city.

Slowly, the charcoal began to glow. She put a grill made of old coat hangers on top and boiled some spaghetti for her family’s dinner.

“I shouldn’t be cooking with charcoal,” said Ms. Castellano, 58, who has asthma and lately has been short of breath and coughing constantly. “But if I don’t cook, I die.”

Ms. Castellano’s crude cooking methods have become the norm across the complex of five 18-story buildings, each with 120 apartments, where she lives and that were once meant to showcase the revolution’s promise when they opened four decades ago.

Today, some people can’t even afford charcoal, and resort to chopping firewood to cook in their homes. » | Ed Augustin and Lisette Poole González | Photographs by Lisette Poole González | Ed Augustin and Lisette Poole traveled to the southeastern city of Santiago de Cuba to document the energy crisis engulfing the island. | Monday, May 25, 2026

This is a BLOODY DISGRACE! What the ORANGE MAN in the White House is doing to those poor people is nothing short of CRIMINAL! All in the name of IDEOLOGICAL WARFARE!

Trump can ponce around in luxury in Mar-a-Lago, and pilfer BILLIONS OF DOLLARS from the state’s coffers to line his own pockets, fill his banks accounts, and puff up his investment portfolios, yet he is happy to put his head on his pillow at night—when he is not writing on Truth Social—and rest, knowing that he is causing these poor people such distress and hardship. What manner of man can Trump be? And what sort of people can Americans be, allowing their leader to persecute innocent people like this, in their name?

The sooner the world turns its back on this regime, the better! This is nothing short of the behaviour of devils. Long live compassion! Long live Cuba! — © Mark Alexander
