Pope Leo Calls for a Two-State Solution in Israel

THE NEW YORK TIMES: The pope, en route to Lebanon after visiting Turkey, said he had discussed with the Turkish president how the Vatican might help mediate in the conflict.

Shortly after takeoff from Istanbul after completing the first leg of his inaugural international trip, Pope Leo XIV said he had spoken with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey about serving as a “mediating voice” to help Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories negotiate a two-state solution.

“We all know that right now Israel does not accept this situation,” the pope said, speaking in Italian in response to a Turkish reporter’s question about the Vatican’s position on the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Leo, noting that the Vatican is “also friends with Israel,” said a two-state solution was “the only solution” to “the conflict they continually live.” He added, “Turkey has an important role that it can play in this.”

The pope’s answer was in accordance with longstanding Vatican policy. The Vatican also has criticized Israel’s conduct during the war in Gaza. In October, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State, said Israel was conducting a “massacre” in Gaza as retribution for Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Cardinal Parolin described those attacks as an “inhuman massacre.” After the Israeli government objected to Cardinal Parolin’s comments, Pope Leo said that the cardinal “expressed the Holy See’s opinion in this matter very well.”

Leo, who thanked President Erdogan for the use of his personal helicopter, said on the plane that the Turkish leader had spent many months talking with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine to try to resolve the war in Ukraine. Leo said he hoped that, given President Erdogan’s relationships with the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and the United States, which is trying to broker a cease-fire, the Turkish president could help “promote dialogue” that would lead to a cease-fire and ultimately an end to the war. » | Motoko Rich | Reporting from the papal plane en route from Istanbul to Beirut, Lebanon | Sunday, November 30, 2025

Pope Leo in Turkey: Pontiff Visits Istanbul’s Sultanahmet Mosque

The Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo, is visiting Istanbul's Sultanahmet Mosque shortly as part of his four-day trip to Turkiye.

The pontiff is following in the footsteps of his predecessors Pope Benedict who visited the place of worship in 2006 and Francis who did the same in 2014.

Unusually, Pope Leo is not expected to visit the nearby Hagia Sophia. It was built in the sixth century and it has great significance to both Christians and Muslims.

Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reports.

Pope Leo Visits Turkey on His First Trip Abroad: What Can We Expect? | DW News

Nov 26, 2025 | Pope Leo XIV is embarking on his first trip abroad, which will take him to Turkey and Lebanon from November 27 to December 2 – where he aims to promote Christian unity and urge peace efforts amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Leo's predecessor, Pope Francis, had planned to visit both countries but was unable to go because of his worsening health. Turkey and Lebanon are majority Muslim countries – and Francis put a strong focus on Muslim-Catholic dialogue during his twelve-year pontificate. But foreign travels are also an opportunity for the Vatican to conduct international diplomacy. So, what can we expect from Leo's visit to Turkey?

King Charles to Pray with Pope on Vatican State Visit in Historic Moment | BBC News

Oct 22, 2025 | King Charles and Pope Leo are to become the first British monarch and pontiff to pray together at a church service since the Reformation in the 16th Century.

This historic moment will be in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, during Thursday’s state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The service will bring together clergy and choirs from both the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England, of which the King is supreme governor.

The visit will be seen as an important symbol of reconciliation, in a trip that will also see the first meeting between the King and the new US-born Pope.

‘They Can’t Dismiss Leo So Easily’: How the Pope Has Confounded Conservatives

THE GUARDIAN: As pontiff prepares for visit of King Charles, the contours of his papacy are slowly becoming apparent

When King Charles meets Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican this week, the two leaders are likely to discuss pressing global issues as well as sharing a historic moment of prayer.

In the face of volatility and rising nationalism, Leo, the first North American chosen to lead the Roman Catholic church, has begun to outline the contours of his papacy after a low-key start to his five-month-old papacy.

For conservative Catholics who hoped he would represent a break with the policies and priorities of his immediate predecessor, Pope Francis, the signs are not good.

“It’s been made quite clear in recent weeks that Leo, substantively, is of the same mould as Francis,” said Christopher White, the author of Pope Leo XIV: Inside the Conclave and the Dawn of a New Papacy and a senior fellow at Georgetown University in Washington DC.

“They have very different styles. Francis was unscripted, spontaneous. Leo is cautious and careful in the way he speaks and acts. But I think they both view the church as what Francis described as a field hospital that has to tend to the most marginalised, particularly the poor in society.” » | Harriet Sherwood | Wednesday, October 22, 2025

Pope Leo and Arnold Schwarzenegger Demand Climate Action

Oct 1, 2025 | Pope Leo XIV gave his first major address on climate change on Wednesday, during a conference marking the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si', a landmark papal document written by his predecessor Pope Francis. In it, he spoke to the importance of the document, known as an encyclical, which called for the care of our environment and specifically addressed climate change. And he urged society to demand more from governments around the world to tackle the challenge.

Arnold Schwarzenegger headlined the three-day climate conference that included an estimated 1,000 representatives from environmental and indigenous groups.

Pope Leo Says He Cannot Broker a Peace Deal for Ukraine

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Pope Leo XIV said that while popes can be advocates for peace, it was less “realistic” for them to serve as mediators.

Despite some early media chatter about the pope helping broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, the Vatican is unlikely to act as a mediator in the search for a peace deal, Pope Leo XIV said in excerpts from an interview published Sunday.

“I’d make a distinction in terms of the voice of the Holy See in advocating for peace and a role as mediator, which I think is very different and is not as realistic as the first one,” Leo said in the interview, parts of which were published in Crux, a Catholic news outlet.

The pope, who was elected as the first pontiff from the United States in May, said the Vatican was making “great efforts to maintain a position” that did not take “one side or the other" but was “truly neutral.”

“Some things I’ve said have been interpreted in one way or the other, and that’s all right, but I think that the realistic part of it is not primary right now,” he said in the interview with Elise Ann Allen, senior correspondent for Crux. » | Motoko Rich | Reporting from Rome | Sunday, September 14, 2025

This is strange! Why should the Vatican remain “neutral” in this? Ukraine was attacked by Russia. So, clearly we know which side caused this war. Neutrality shouldn’t come into it. — © Mark Alexander

Pope Condemns Gaza War’s ‘Barbarity’ as 73 Reported Killed While Waiting for Food

THE GUARDIAN: Pontiff also speaks of anguish over Israeli strike on territory’s only Catholic church, which killed three people

Pope Leo XIV has condemned the “barbarity” of the war in Gaza and the “indiscriminate use of force” as Gaza’s health ministry said at least 73 Palestinians had been killed queueing for food.

The ministry said on Sunday that the victims had been killed in different locations, mostly in northern Gaza.

It said 67 of the dead had been killed by Israeli fire while waiting for UN aid trucks entering through the northern Zikim crossing with Israel. » | Jennifer Rankin and agencies | Sunday, July 20, 2025
