Joined by Maine candidates Graham Platner and Troy Jackson, Sanders called for a political revolution focused on workers’ rights, healthcare, affordable housing, and taxing the ultra-wealthy.
During the rally, Sanders argued that the top 1% controls enormous wealth and political influence while ordinary Americans struggle with wages, healthcare costs, and housing.
He also criticized media concentration, the Citizens United ruling, and corporate influence over government.
The Vermont senator proposed a 5% annual wealth tax on billionaires and urged Americans to unite against what he described as an “oligarchic system” benefiting the rich at the expense of working families.
Bernie Sanders is the man who should be inhabiting the White House, Bernie Sanders is the man who should be president. If only American voters were smart enough to know what’s best for them!
Most Americans fear Bernie Sanders, believing him to be a “radical socialist”! Fact is, he is nothing of the sort. Were he to be running for political office here in Europe, he’d be considered a middle of the road, moderate candidate. But to pro-capitalist, far-right loons, he’s considered to be a far-left socialist outlier. Go figure!
If Americans were to listen closely to his message(s), what this gentleman wants for his compatriots is fairness. He is NOT against rich people at all. He simply wants them to pay their fair share, he wants them to contribute a relatively small portion of their wealth to the state in the form of taxes, for the common good.
After all, America’s infrastructure is falling apart. America’s poor live “paycheck to paycheck”. Millions of Americans cannot afford any healthcare, because they cannot afford the extremely hefty insurance premiums. Furthermore, increasingly and disturbingly, the one-time middle classes are losing their homes and are becoming homeless or are reduced to living in trailer parks!
What Bernie Sanders wants for America is universal healthcare, free at the point of delivery, just like all civilised countries offer their citizens. After all, if a regime such as Trump’s can squander between one and two billion dollars a day on an illicit and unnecessary war, and if it can offer the already superrich tax breaks and severely reduced tax demands, then it surely can afford to offer the people free healthcare. Universal healthcare is not socialism in action; it is merely Christianity in action! Just imagine being older with a serious chronic illness and not having the means even to visit a doctor, still less receive treatment for that illness! What a fix to be in! What a fate! And this in a country which calls itself “Christian”!
My message to Americans is this: Bernie is your man. If you Americans ever had the good sense to vote for Bernie, you, and the rest of the world, would see emerging and rising like Pheonix from the ashes a very different, far fairer, far gentler America : An America worthy of respect; and an America to be admired. — © Mark Alexander
