THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: A new entry has been added to the list of things women are now forbidden from doing in Gaza. Following on from laws banning women from using male hairdressers or driving cars, it's now illegal for women to smoke the famous shisha water-pipes in public.

Guido Westerwelle: Müsste die Frage heute entschieden werden, wäre die Türkei nicht beitrittsfähig und die Europäische Union nicht aufnahmefähig. Wir haben aber ein großes Interesse daran, dass die Türkei sich Richtung Europa orientiert. Ich möchte eine Türkei, die auf der Seite Europas steht. Nicht nur aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen. Das Land kann bei der Lösung vieler Konflikte sehr konstruktiv helfen – ob es um Afghanistan, Iran, Jemen oder den Nahen Osten geht.
BILD: Sollte es über den EU-Beitritt der Türkei einen Volksentscheid geben?
Westerwelle: Man sollte jetzt nicht über Dinge spekulieren, die erst in Jahren anstehen. Von über 30 Verhandlungskapiteln sind derzeit über die Hälfte blockiert. Wer den Eindruck erweckt, der Beitritt stünde vor der Tür, liegt also gänzlich falsch. In Wahrheit geht es darum, die Türken nicht vor den Kopf zu stoßen und den Eindruck zu erwecken, wir seien nicht an ihnen interessiert.
BILD: Muss die türkische Regierung Türken in Deutschland drängen, sich hier besser zu integrieren?
Westerwelle: Der türkische Ministerpräsident Erdogan hat die türkischstämmigen Zuwanderer aufgerufen, die deutsche Sprache zu lernen. Das unterstütze ich. Un chirurgien du nom de Labbas Sbaï qui a travaillé en Suisse romande fait la grève de la faim dans une prison marocaine pour protester contre une arrestation qu'il juge arbitraire, a indiqué sa famille.
Selon les médias, Labbas Sbaï paye pour avoir nommément désigné de hauts responsables locaux qui seraient impliqués dans la couverture d'un trafic de cigarettes et de chameaux entre le Maroc et l'Algérie en 2006.

Die Beitrittsgegner seien voller „Vorurteile“, kritisierte der konservative Politiker indirekt die Regierungen in Wien, Paris und Berlin, die sich zur türkischen EU-Mitgliedschaft stets skeptisch geäußert hatten. Die Gegner einer türkischen EU-Mitgliedschaft seien voreingenommen und ließen sich durch Protektionismus leiten, sagte Cameron am Dienstag bei seinem ersten Türkei-Besuch seit seinem Amtsantritt im Mai. „Dies ist eine Sache, in der ich sehr leidenschaftliche Gefühle hege“, sagte er in einer Rede vor der türkischen Handelskammer. „Ich will, dass wir zusammen eine Straße von Ankara nach Brüssel bauen.“
Die EU ist tief gespalten, ob sie dem muslimisch geprägten Land eine Vollmitgliedschaft einräumen soll. Insbesondere in Deutschland und Frankreich bestehen große Vorbehalte gegenüber einem EU-Beitritt. Kritiker argumentieren unter anderem, die Türkei würde sich nicht in die christlich geprägte Kultur der EU einfügen.

Aus den hochherrschaftlichen Räumen aus der Zeit des viktorianischen Imperiums solle "ein Signal für eine neue britische Außenpolitik" ausgehen, verkündete Hague: Sein Ministerium müsse es dem Staat und der Gesellschaft Großbritanniens ermöglichen, "maximalen Einfluss in der Welt " auszuüben.
Trotz enormer Sparzwänge ist die neue britische Koalitionsregierung entschlossen, ihre Rolle in der globalen Politik zu verstärken. "Die Welt hat sich geändert, und wenn wir uns nicht ebenfalls ändern, schwindet unser Einfluss, was Folgen für die nationale Sicherheit und Wirtschaft hat", argumentierte der neue konservative Außenminister. THE TELEGRAPH: Tony Hayward has resigned as chief executive of BP, after the energy giant announced a record $17bn loss this year on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The oil company also said that Bob Dudley, the American in charge of BP’s oil spill response unit, will now take over on October 1 and lead the company through an accelerated programme of $30bn in asset sales. BP made “clean” profits of $5bn, stripping out the effect of inventory changes and exceptionals, but took a $32.2bn pre-tax charge on the oil spill.
This is made up of a $20bn compensation fund for victims, clean-up charges and provisions for funding costs. The “clean” profits are a 74pc rise in last year’s figure of $2.9bn, as a result of higher oil prices and more efficient operations. BP will now press ahead with becoming smaller and more profitable, selling $30bn of exploration and production assets in the next 18 months.
Mr Dudley will also have to navigate a criminal investigation into the spill, a slew of litigation and ward off rivals seeking to pounce on the company's trophy assets. Aussi, je resterai votre avocat le plus déterminé pour une adhésion à l'Union européenne et pour une plus grande influence à la table de la diplomatie européenne», a ajouté David Cameron.
Les négociations pour une adhésion turque à l'UE, entamées en 2005, avancent au ralenti, du fait notamment de l'opposition de la France et de l'Allemagne. THE TELEGRAPH: David Cameron will today demand an end to the anti-Muslim 'prejudice' which he claims is blocking Turkey's membership of the European Union.
In a speech in the Turkish capital of Ankara, he will tell of his "anger" that a country which is a member of the Nato coalition fighting in Afghanistan should be asked to: "guard the camp but not be allowed to sit inside the tent".
He will claim that those who seek to block the incorporation of a Muslim nation into the 27-member EU are misguided and prejudiced. His words are likely to be construed as criticism of France and Germany, which both oppose the country's membership.
The Prime Minister has embarked on a four-day trip which will also take him to India where, accompanied by a large trade delegation and several members of the Cabinet, he will seek to forge a new relationship based on trade with the emerging Asian powerhouse rather than aid.
In Ankara, he will hold talks with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish premier, before the two leaders sign an accord setting out plans for future co-operation.
Addressing the EU membership which Britain has supported for years along with nations including Italy and Spain, but which has stalled amid opposition from Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he will tell the Turks: "I will remain your strongest possible advocate for EU membership and for greater influence at the top table of European diplomacy.
"Together, I want us to pave the road from Ankara to Brussels."

Cameron is showing clearly enough what a greenhorn in politics he is. He’s as green as his face is fresh! Moreover, he’s a fool! What does Cameron know about the religion of Islam? What does Cameron understand about Muslims’ goals and aspirations? Has he ever lived in a Muslim country? Has he ever worked alongside Muslims? Has he ever left his comfortable cocoon of plenty? The man is clearly not up to the job. He’s had his chance; it’s already time for him to be replaced with a real Conservative – one who speaks for the people.
It is my firm belief that the people of this once great country do not want Turkey to be allowed into the EU, because they know full well that it will lead to further Islamization: To further Islamization of Europe; and to further Islamization of the United Kingdom. And frankly, they’ve already had enough of both!
I don’t know whether this is the “Brokeback coalition” or not, as David Davis has suggested. But one thing I do know: If Cameron goes on like this, he’ll break the back of Western civilization!
Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy have got it right about Turkey’s accession to the EU. Its accession will be nothing short of a disaster for both Europe and the United Kingdom.

Le sommet de Kampala, prévu de longue date, devait être consacrée à la lutte contre un autre fléau africain, la mortalité maternelle et infantile. Mais son ordre du jour a été bouleversé. "Ces terroristes peuvent et doivent être vaincus, a lancé dimanche le président ougandais, Yoweri Museveni. Agissons de concert pour les chasser d'Afrique. EDGE: An anti-gay pastor in Gainesville, Florida has come up with a plan to stand firm for righteousness: he’s calling on his followers to burn copies of the Qu’ran, the holy book of the Muslim faith.
Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World outreach Center has called for the burning of the Qu’ran--spelled with a common variant spelling, Koran, in the title of the church’s event, the "International Burn A Koran Day," which is scheduled to take place on September 11.
Text at the church’s website describes the Dove World Outreach Center as "a New Testament Church" that is "based on the Bible, the Word of God." The text indicates that the church subscribes to the notion that the end of the world is approaching: "We believe that God is calling a new generation in this end time--a generation of believers that is yielded to his Word and his will.
"Our Land needs strong churches that understand and fulfill God’s vision of restoration and reformation," the site’s text continues, "churches that are able to handle the revival we will see this century with the apostolic anointing, and bring Godly changes to our entire society." >>>

Diejenigen, die den französischen Präsidenten Nicolas Sarkozy verteidigen, betonen die Reformfeindlichkeit des Landes. Sie sagen, die Beliebtheit des Präsidenten sei deswegen so gesunken, weil er – endlich – gegen die Blockaden des Landes angestürmt sei. Zum Beispiel: eine garantierte Basisversorgung namens service minimum während der Streiks im öffentlichen Dienst (Schulen, Kindergärten, Nahverkehr und anderswo); Autonomie der Universitäten; Reform der Rentenversicherung – und noch jedes Mal sei Nicolas Sarkozy schließlich frontal mit dem Konservatismus zusammengeprallt, vor dem seine Vorgänger stets zurückgeschreckt seien. Deshalb bezahle er heute für seine Hartnäckigkeit.
Ein weiterer Faktor macht es zudem für Sarkozy schwer: die globale ökonomische Situation. Die Finanzkrise im vergangenen, ebenso diejenige der Staatshaushalte in diesem Jahr sowie das schwache Wirtschaftswachstum und die drohende Sparpolitik – das alles erregt das Missfallen der Straße. Die Staats- oder Regierungschefs in Spanien, Italien oder Deutschland haben laut Umfragen, alles in allem genommen, nur noch ein Drittel der Bevölkerung auf ihrer Seite. Seltsamer demokratischer Nihilismus: Den linken oder rechten Regierungen werden just jene von außen kommenden Schocks vorgeworfen, gegen die sie zu kämpfen versuchen! Frankreich ist da jedenfalls keine Ausnahme.

La milliardaire Liliane Bettencourt a été entendue lundi 24 juillet à son domicile dans l'enquête sur le contenu des enregistrements clandestins, première étape d'une semaine clé au cours de laquelle le ministre du Travail, Eric Woerth, doit également être auditionné.
"L'audition a duré à peu près deux heures, sans pause", a dit à l'AFP Me Georges Kiejman, l'avocat de la milliardaire. "Elle s'est passée très courtoisement, s'agissant de souvenirs qui sont parfois très anciens et que ma cliente n'a pas forcément gardé à l'esprit avec détail", a précisé l'avocat devant la presse, en sortant du domicile de sa cliente.
"Mme Bettencourt a vécu son audition comme quelque chose de très désagréable qui s'est passé le mieux possible", a assuré son entourage.

TRIBUNE DE GENÈVE: BRUXELLES | L'Union européenne a décidé lundi d'ouvrir dès mardi des négociations en vue de l'adhésion de l'Islande, mais nombre de gouvernements doutent de la volonté réelle d'intégration de l'île et les obstacles restent multiples.
La décision a été prise lors d'une réunion des secrétaires d'Etat chargés des Affaires européennes à Bruxelles.
Ils ont adopté un "cadre de négociation en vue de l'ouverture des négociations d’adhésion avec l’Islande" et décidé "de la tenue de la séance d'ouverture" mardi, selon un communiqué de l'UE.
L'Islande a déposé sa candidature pour l'entrée dans l'UE le 16 juilllet 2009, dans le sillage d'une crise financière qui avait poussé son opinion à souhaiter bénéficier du parapluie de l'euro. Depuis, l'enthousiasme de la population a nettement reculé.
"Il faut avoir envie d'entrer en Europe", a souligné lundi devant la presse le secrétaire d'Etat français aux Affaires européennes Pierre Lellouche.
"Je n'ai pas tout à fait l'impression au niveau des sondages que les Islandais eux mêmes soient très favorables. C'est tout le problème", a-t-il commenté.

ON TOP: An online survey has found that a majority of Argentinians approve of gay marriage.
The survey was conducted by Argentina's 110-year-old paper El Debate.
The paper asked: “A few hours ago and after prolonged discussion, Argentina became the first Latin American country that allows marriage between members of the same sex. Do you agree with this new law?”
Fifty-seven percent of respondents to the poll said they agreed with the law, while 41 percent disagreed and the remainder said they had no opinion.

MAIL ONLINE: The embattled head of BP is on the brink of bailing out today - with a golden parachute to break his fall.
Tony Hayward, who arrived at the company's headquarters in London this morning, will receive a seven-figure payoff and a pension estimated at £584,000 a year.
He will stand down today after three months of abuse left him described as the ‘most hated and clueless man in America’.
The enforced departure of the 53-year-old Briton will top the agenda at a crucial London board meeting today.
He has been widely seen as a ‘dead man walking’ ever since an oil-rig explosion led to the worst-ever environmental disaster in the U.S.
The focus will not be on if he goes but when, and how much it costs. During his 28 years at BP, he has built up a gold-plated £10.8million pension pot which he can start taking at 60.
He is also entitled to a year’s salary, equal to just over £1million.
His departure follows a disastrous series of PR gaffes since 11 died in an explosion on April 20 in the Gulf of Mexico.
One of his most notorious was to admit: ‘I want my life back’, at a time when millions of barrels of oil were gushing into the ocean, wrecking the livelihoods of thousands of Americans.
A few weeks later, his decision to go sailing on his yacht in the Isle of Wight added to suspicions that Mr Hayward was not being suitably contrite. But the level of the fury from America has been extraordinary and relentless despite the fact that BP was not solely responsible for the disaster.
President Obama warned: ‘He wouldn’t be working for me after any of those statements.’
Yesterday a BP spokesman insisted that Mr Hayward, whose family have been the victims of crank phone calls, hate mail and death threats, remains the company’s chief executive.

A 78-year old French aid worker held hostage by al-Qaida's north African branch was killed by his captors at the weekend, president Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed today.
Retired engineer Michel Germaneau was "murdered in cold blood", the French leader said in a televised statement in which he warned "the crime committed will not go unpunished".

Authorities in Iran have issued an arrest warrant for an acclaimed Iranian lawyer and arrested his wife and brother-in-law over his involvement in the case of a woman sentenced to death by stoning.
Lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei's office in Tehran was ransacked, and he was interrogated in Evin prison for four hours on Saturday over his human rights activities and involvement in the case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the 43-year-old mother of two who was convicted of adultery and whose plight in Iran has drawn international attention since her children launched a campaign for her release almost a month ago.
Mostafaei called Sakineh's stoning sentence "a bogus conviction" and "absolutely illegal" in an interview with the Guardian earlier this month.
He was released, then called back for further questioning before being set free. Authorities then issued an arrest warrant.
When they were unable to find him the authorities arrested his wife, Fereshteh Halimi and her brother Farhad Halimi to try to force him to surrender. THE GUARDIAN: State's tough new rules capture mood of growing fury – and are starting to set a national trend
JD Hayworth, a barnstorming Arizona Republican who is campaigning for the Senate, has strong opinions about his state's new law on illegal immigration.
The law, known as SB1070 and due to come into effect this week, requires police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants and makes it a crime not to have valid immigration papers on your person. It has prompted Hispanics to fear racial profiling, immigrants to flee the state in droves, activists to organise consumer boycotts and the Obama administration to sue in federal court.
Hayworth has an objection, too. He thinks the law is not enough. Speaking to an overwhelmingly white crowd at a "town hall" meeting in suburban Mesa last week, Hayworth said it was time to stop automatically granting citizenship to anyone born in Arizona. "There is a whole new term: birth tourism. In the jet age there are people who time their gestation period so they give birth on American soil," he declared. State senator Russell Pearce, who helped come up with SB1070, is now pushing for a law along those lines.
By any standards this is extreme stuff. Yet Hayworth, far from being out on the edge of Arizona politics, is a politician on the rise. He is challenging Senator John McCain in a right-wing rebellion that could turf the Republicans' most recent presidential candidate out of the Senate seat he has held since 1986. In an interview with The Independent this month, Philip Hollobone said he would ask a woman wearing the niqab at his constituency surgery to lift her face veil. If she refused, he would end the interview, although he would take up her case if she later wrote a letter to him.
The human rights group Liberty has written to the Kettering MP warning that his decision would breach the 2006 Equality Act. It told him: “As an MP providing a service? EXPATICA: The party of Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders on Saturday reemerged as a possible government coalition partner.
The Christian Democrats agreed to exploratory talks with Wilders' PVV and the centre-right VVD.
Following June 9 elections won by the VVD, the Christian Democratic Action refused coalition talks involving Wilders' far-right Party for Freedom, but a party conference decided Saturday to take part in a new round of talks.
CDA leader Maxime Verhagen said the CDA would set no conditions for the discussions. But if this were to lead to real coalition negotiations, "there will be conditions", he said on national television.
These would involve "how we relate to each other as a society, the principles of the constitutional state, basic human rights that each individual should enjoy in the Netherlands.
"The CDA will not be part of a government that may put these issues up for discussion."
Wilders, who calls Islam fascist and campaigns for the banning of the Koran and the burqa, described CDA's move as a "good decision," according to news agency ANP.
