Spaniens Boom dank Einwanderung | ARTE Re:

Smoking Is Cool Again – and Hollywood’s to Blame

This screenshot is from this Telegraph article. | Smoking is now the preserve of the hippest stars, including The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White Credit: PG/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images

THE TELEGRAPH: From Oscar victors One Battle After Another and Sinners to Disney’s hit Kennedy drama Love Story, cigarettes are creeping back on to screens

Oscar Wilde wrote in The Picture of Dorian Gray that “A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?” For many years, cinema took the Wildean image of the cigarette as the Platonic idea of sophistication and developed it even further.

Who can forget Sean Connery’s introduction as 007 in Dr No, lighting a Craven A cigarette as he says the words “Bond… James Bond” for the first time on screen, or Humphrey Bogart disconsolately but stylishly smoking in Casablanca as he mourns his lost love, Ilsa, saying: “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.”

Smoking on screen historically denoted sexiness, class and cool. This was the case when Sharon Stone lit up a cigarette in an interrogation room in Basic Instinct and sneered at the detectives interrogating her: “What are you going to do? Charge me with smoking?”

It was hard, coming of age in the Nineties, not to be impressed by it all, even as we were surrounded by health warnings; by the time I was at university, practically everyone I knew smoked. The only reason I refrained was because I was frankly rubbish at it. » | Alexander Larman | Wednesday, April 15, 2026

”Hollywood’s to blame”. One could turn that around and say ‘thanks to Hollywood’! 😊 Even though I am no longer a smoker, I am sick to death of all the bloody do-gooders around in the West these days. Quite frankly, they are so tiresome!

Do-gooders’ intentions are, I dare say,… ‘good’, but they are frightfully boring and such people are certainly not fun to be around. Also, it must be said that whatever their intentions, people have never been so unhealthy as they are today. When I look back, so many people smoked, yet most people remained relatively slim throughout their lives, and type-2 diabetes was relatively uncommon. These days, this is not the case. Since people stopped smoking en masse, they have satisfied their cravings by eating and drinking instead. People eat like there’s no tomorrow, and they often drink like fish! So, these days, people suffer from obesity, obesity-related diseases, and fatty liver disease instead of smoking-related diseases.

Even though I am no longer a smoker, I smoked most of my adult life — a pack a day. These days, young people want six packs. My generation wanted twenty-packs! 😊

Anyway, all jokes aside, whichever way we lead our lives, we will eventually suffer from something in the fulness of time; it’s almost inevitable. And as my American, long-term, deceased, and sorely-missed partner always used to say: You can’t get out of this life alive! Never were truer words spoken! (He, by the way, was not a smoker. He had stopped smoking aeons before I ever met him.)

I have heard it said that some people associate smoking with poverty, ill health, and an early death. Such negativity! Such pessimism! I don’t. I associate smoking with elegance, class, and style. There's something very alluring about a well-dressed gentleman smoking a cigarette. It looks so sexy, too. After all, isn't that why so many Hollywood movies showed so many actors and actresses smoking? — © Mark Alexander

What Albania Teaches Us about Kushner's Real Estate Tactics

Jun 10, 2026 | Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, has finalized a deal with Albanian officials to allow construction on Sazan Island in the Adriatic Sea.

The $1.6bn project is expected to build luxury tourism real estate on the pristine island and surrounding waters and wetlands. Spurned [sic] by the potential environmental impact of the plan and the possibility of corrupt dealings, demonstrators have taken to the streets of Albania's capital city demanding an end to the project.

SpaceX’s I.P.O. Could Turn 4,400 Employees Into Millionaires

THE NEW YORK TIMES: While Elon Musk may soon become a trillionaire, his rocket company’s market debut is set to the change the lives of its current and former employees, too.

Screenshot taken from this NYT article. | Chelsea Beck

As Trevor Hise was getting ready to graduate from college in 2011, his parents wanted him to take what they saw as a stable job at General Electric. But Mr. Hise had landed an internship at a start-up he loved. Against his parents’ advice, he stayed for a full-time job at that young company for the next 12 years.

The start-up was Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Today, Mr. Hise has more than 100,000 SpaceX shares that he earned from his time working there. With the rocket maker expected to go public this week at $135 a share, Mr. Hise’s SpaceX stock is likely worth at least $13.5 million — a sum that has left him in disbelief.

“The magnitude of this has been ridiculous,” said the 37-year-old, who worked as a SpaceX launch engineer and now considers himself semiretired.

SpaceX’s journey to the stock market has been defined by a series of superlatives. It is the biggest-ever initial public offering of the most dominant space company by the world’s richest man. And it is set to unleash generational wealth if its shares soar in its trading debut at the whopping valuation of $1.77 trillion, five times the market capitalization of General Electric.

SpaceX’s I.P.O. is expected to make a lot of rich people even richer. First in the queue is Mr. Musk, 54, who is likely to become the world’s first trillionaire. His friends, along with Silicon Valley venture capitalists, private investment firms and others who put money into the company, are also set to reap billions. » | Kirsten Grind Reporting from San Francisco | Wednesday, June 10, 2026

Trump is garbage; Trump is trash! He should never have been elected and still less re-elected as America’s president. Common sense, if Americans had any, dictates that one doesn’t elect a convicted felon and sex-offender into the highest office in the land as one’s president. It is simply asking for trouble; and trouble Americans have got. Alas, though not only Americans! We in the rest of the West, too, have also got to share that trouble! — © Mark Alexander

Jun 5, 2026 | The British government earlier this week barred left-wing political commentators Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur from entering the UK ahead of several speaking events. The Home Office said it was cancelling their travel permits because "their presence in the U.K. may not be conducive to the public good."

Piker and Uygur, who are related, are both outspoken in their criticism of Israel. While the government did not cite a specific reason for the ban, some lawmakers and pro-Israel groups had accused the two of promoting antisemitism, which they reject.

"I find what the British government did here to be objectionable. I find it to be disgusting. I also find it to be terrifying," Piker tells Democracy Now!_"I think it's a sign that we're … headed down a very different — dare I say, fascist — direction in the Western world."

Violence Erupts in Belfast after Protests over Knife Attack

THE GUARDIAN: Crowds, including people in masks and hoods, burned vehicles and properties after calls for demonstrations from far-right figures

Protests against immigration have erupted into violence in Northern Ireland after far-right activists called for demonstrations in response to a stabbing attack that was captured in a graphic video.

Crowds including masked men burned vehicles and houses and blocked roads in and around Belfast on Tuesday night, hours after Elon Musk, Tommy Robinson and other agitators exhorted people to take to the streets.

Protesters hijacked and burned a Glider bus on Newtownards Road in east Belfast and torched cars near Shankill Road and in Newtownabbey, from which smoke poured while sirens sounded and a police helicopter hovered above.

The unrest flared hours after police charged a 30-year-old asylum seeker from Sudan with attempted murder in connection with an attack in north Belfast on Monday night that left a man critically injured and prompted widespread shock and condemnation. The suspect is to appear at Belfast magistrates court on Wednesday. » | Rory Carroll, Hannah Al-Othman, Helena Horton and Robyn Vinter | Wednesday, June 10, 2026

US Strikes Iran in Response to Downing of Military Helicopter | BBC News

Jun 10, 2026 | The US says it has carried out a series of strikes on Iranian military and surveillance sites in response to the downing of an American helicopter in the Gulf. Air defence systems, ground control stations and radar sites were targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, the US military Central Command (Centcom) said.

In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched strikes on 21 targets at US bases in the region, one in Bahrain and the other in Jordan, while Kuwait's army said it was also intercepting an attack.

The US has described its strikes as "a proportional response" for the Apache helicopter downing on Monday, while the IRGC described the attacks as "vicious".

US President Donald Trump had earlier accused Iran of shooting down the helicopter and said the US "must, of necessity" respond. The two crew members survived and were rescued by an American sea drone.

Trump’s Sharp Turn on China: Embracing It as a Peer Power

THE NEW YORK TIMES: President Trump’s warming with Xi Jinping of China, a leader he admires, has ignited anxieties in Washington and across Asia.

This screenshot is from this NYT article. | The U.S. and Chinese governments rolled out a new phrase, “constructive strategic stability,” during President Trump’s meeting in Beijing last month with the leader of China, Xi Jinping. | Kenny Holston/New York Times

After meeting with China’s top diplomat in Malaysia last summer, Secretary of State Marco Rubio uttered a line that made few waves at the time but would later help pave the way for an abrupt change.

The United States and China, Mr. Rubio said, had an “opportunity here to achieve some strategic stability” and find areas of cooperation. He used the phrase again in February while talking about China in the Caribbean, also to little notice.

Chinese officials picked up on Mr. Rubio’s remarks and suggested to their U.S. counterparts even rosier language to describe ties between the two nations, according to two people with knowledge of the previously unreported diplomacy.

The new phrase — “constructive strategic stability” — was rolled out by both governments during President Trump’s meeting in Beijing last month with the leader of China, Xi Jinping.

Although the language sounds stiff and somewhat vague, such diplomatic terms serve as important guideposts. The new catchphrase signals to agencies in both nations, and to other powers, that the United States and China — the world’s two largest economies and most powerful militaries — are looking to work together or limit hostilities, notably on trade and Taiwan. » | Edward Wong | Edward Wong, the author of a book on China, reported from the field during President Trump’s visit to Beijing and Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s trip to India. | Tuesday, June 9, 2026

‘We Want to See Him in Ukraine’: Zelenskyy Hopes to Invite King Charles on State Visit

THE GUARDIAN: Exclusive: Ukrainian leader says he has ‘a very good relationship’ with British monarch, who has supported his country

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that he plans to invite King Charles on a state visit to Ukraine as early as this year, which would make him the most senior royal to travel to Kyiv since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The Ukrainian president said he had a close relationship with the king, whom he has met on numerous occasions, including when he gave a public show of support after Zelenskyy’s explosive visit to the White House last year.

In an interview with the Guardian, Zelenskyy said: “Today I want to invite him [the king] very much. I don’t know from the point of security. Yes, of course, we want to see him in Ukraine very much. I don’t know how it will be this year, if it’s possible, but of course we want to see him.”

Zelenskyy said Charles had continued to support Ukraine, but refused to divulge exactly how. “It’s up to his majesty to answer on such questions,” he said. » | Pippa Crerar and Luke Harding | Tuesday, June 8, 2026

Marlene Dietrich : Lili Marlene * | Reupload

March 10, 2009

Liedtexte:

Bernie Sanders Declares Political War against Trump and Powerful Oligarchs

Jun 9, 2026 | Bernie Sanders delivered a fiery speech criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump and what he described as the growing influence of wealthy élites and powerful interests in American politics.

During his remarks, Sanders called for political engagement, economic reform, and greater accountability from those he argues hold disproportionate power over government and public policy.

The speech energized supporters and sparked renewed debate over wealth inequality, corporate influence, and the future of American democracy.

I have said this before, surely a million times! But I will say it again: Bernie Sanders is the man who should be the president of the USA. This man has got a heart, this man cares about people, especially the underprivileged, and this man, were he to be elected as president, would definitely do something to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

Yet, it is an enigma to me why the American electorate aren’t smart enough to realize that if they elected this gentleman to the presidency, their fortunes would start to change for the better almost overnight, as would the fortunes of America itself. Overnight, America would start to change from the harsh, cruel, ante-Diluvian country it is into a modern, progressive nation which puts the well-being of its citizens first, puts the well-being if its citizens above the interests of corporations and powerful lobby groups.

I have heard it said so many times that many Americans cannot vote for Bernie Sanders because he is too left-wing, too socialist. Fact is, however, Bernie Sanders is nothing of the sort. Here in Europe, were Bernie Sanders to run for political office, he would be considered a moderate.

My message to Americans is simple and clear, and it is this: Vote for Bernie Sanders and change your fortunes for the better, and change, once and for all, the image of, and trajectory of, the nation you all profess to love so much and are all so very proud of. — © Mark Alexander

Kushner’s Sazan Plan: Barefoot Self-discovery or Modern Land Grab?| Soumaya Ghannoushi | MEE Opinion

Jun 9, 2026 | Soumaya Ghannoushi, a writer and expert in Middle East politics, argues that Jared Kushner's multi-billion-dollar plan to build a luxury resort on Sazan Island exposes a significant disconnect between elite privilege and the real-world implications of sovereignty.

Ghannoushi points out that what Ivanka Trump describes as an innocent "barefoot discovery" of an untouched "mysterious Mediterranean paradise" is actually a calculated venture supported by foreign sovereign wealth funds and facilitated by local authorities that are compliant with these plans.

She argues that Kushner is attempting to reduce sovereign geography to merely a picturesque backdrop, drawing a troubling parallel to his controversial real estate ambitions regarding the "waterfront potential of Gaza" during Israel’s genocidal war on the besieged strip.

Juni 2026
