South African Pepper Steak Pie
Jul 5, 2026 | The real South African pepper steak pie recipe — flaky rough puff pastry, slow-braised black pepper beef, and all the garage pie nostalgia, made properly at home.
If you grew up on garage pies*, this one's for you. I'll show you how to make pepper steak pies from scratch: a cheat's rough puff pastry that bakes into shattering golden layers (no pastry degree required), and a rich, glossy steak filling built on toasted black pepper and coriander — the same duo that seasons biltong**, so you know it's going somewhere good. Every step, every temperature, and the tricks that get you a pie that blisters and glistens like the ones from the pie warmer.
* Whatever “garage pies” are! Are those, perhaps, ready-made pies you stop in the filling station on the way home from work to buy for a quick dinner and save you standing over a hot stove when you get home after an exhausting day’s work, I wonder? 😊 — Mark Alexander
**Biltong: “Biltong is a traditional South African cured and air-dried meat. Similar in appearance to beef jerky but thicker and more tender, it is made by marinating premium cuts of meat in vinegar and spices (like coriander and black pepper) and then air-drying it slowly without heat.”
Google informs us that “the word biltong comes from the Dutch words bil (rump or hindquarter) and tong (strip). The method was developed in the 17th century by Dutch settlers (and adapted from indigenous Khoisan preservation methods) to keep meat from spoiling during long, hot journeys across Southern Africa.” [Source: Google AI]

Ahmadinejad Back from the Dead at Khamenei’s Funeral
THE TELEGRAPH: Iran’s former president reported as killed at start of the war spotted among millions of mourners in Tehran
Screenshot from this Telegraph article. | Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran’s former president, was among the mourners at the funeral procession for slain supreme leader Ali Khamenei
Iran’s former president has appeared at the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei despite having been reported killed at the start of the war.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was one of millions of mourners who poured into Tehran dressed in black on Monday to escort the slain supreme leader’s coffin through the capital.
The former hardline president, who governed from 2005 to 2013, was declared dead by several Iranian state-affiliated media outlets on the opening day of the war, when Israeli and US strikes killed Khamenei and much of the country’s leadership.
It was thought he had been killed when a missile struck near his home.
He was never seen or heard from in the months that followed, and no official confirmation or denial of his fate was issued, leaving his status among the many uncertainties of the war’s chaotic first days.
On Monday, however, he was seen in public for the first time since the war, moving among the mourners in a jacket with a mask pulled down to his throat. » | Akhtar Makoli | Monday, July 6, 2026

What Happened to Germany’s Royal Family After the Empire Fell?
July 5, 2026 | In November 1918, the German Empire collapsed virtually overnight. Kaiser Wilhelm II fled to the Netherlands, and 22 separate monarchies fell like dominoes — ending centuries of royal rule across Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, and beyond.
But the families who built these empires didn't disappear. They negotiated. They schemed. Some struck deals with the Weimar Republic. Others made a far darker bargain — with Adolf Hitler himself.
This is the untold story of what happened to Germany's royal dynasties after the empire fell. From Kaiser Wilhelm's bizarre exile as the "Woodchopper of Doorn," to Crown Prince Wilhelm's catastrophic flirtation with the Nazi Party, to the Wittelsbach family's principled resistance that landed them in concentration camps — the fates of these families reveal how power, wealth, and legacy survive even when thrones are destroyed.
Over a century later, the descendants of Germany's last emperor are still fighting the German government over palaces, crowns, and 27,000 priceless artifacts. And the question at the center of it all — did the Hohenzollerns help bring Hitler to power? — is worth millions of euros.
This story isn't just about royalty. It's about what happens when dynasties outlive their purpose, and the choices that define a family's legacy for generations. …

'Scratch the Surface and They Don’t Like It’ | Sunday Times Editor Explains Farage Investigation
ul 8, 2026 | Ben Taylor, Sunday Times editor, explains what Reform's reaction to the weekend's revelations reveals about how they view "proper scrutiny". He adds Nigel Farage should ask himself if he believes in a free press or wants to “go down the Trumpian route”.
“They’ve become quite used to the popularity and the acclaim ... But if you scratch the surface, they don't like it."
That these people are even giving mind space to the possibility that Farage could ever be this country’s prime minister is something which I find profoundly depressing. Farage is the cause of Brexit which has, in turn, impoverished the nation. Then, to go on and talk about his possibly becoming prime minister after he has caused the British economy so much harm is, to my mind, not only ironic and nonsensical, but it is also absurd! The man is a self-enriching, Trump-loving charlatan. Even now, at this early stage, he shows all the signs of being equally as corrupt. Too use Thatcher;s famous phrase: No! No! No! The British electorate deserve better than this. — © Mark Alexander

Comment 2:
America needs more socialism, not less! And I speak as a man who has never voted even once for socialism in my entire life. But what America has now is socialism for the élite but raw capitalism for the working poor. This needs to be reversed. The only American I can think of that would do this is Bernie Sanders. And he is precisely the man who should lead America and the free world. Bernie Sanders is a man of integrity. The same cannot be said of the Orange One. — © Mark Alexander

Trump Orders US to Cut All Trade with Spain
THE TELEGRAPH: Donald Trump has ordered the US to cut off all trade with Spain, calling it a “terrible partner” in Nato.
The US president said he had told Scott Bessent, his treasury secretary, to cease trade with the country, accusing it of failing to contribute enough to the alliance.
Speaking alongside Mark Rutte, Nato’s general secretary, at a press conference in Turkey, Mr Trump said on Wednesday: “Spain is a terrible partner in Nato. They don’t participate. They don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits.

Cancers, maladies cardio-vasculaires, neurologiques…

Farage Resigns and Says He Will Run Again in Special Election
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Nigel Farage, leader of the populist right-wing party Reform U.K., has come under increasing pressure after a series of revelations about undisclosed gifts and donations.
Nigel Farage, the leader of the populist right-wing Reform U.K. party, on Tuesday said he would resign his seat in Parliament and run for re-election in his Clacton seat to answer criticism of his financial affairs.
The unexpected move comes after recent revelations about gifts and financial support received by Mr. Farage, both from a cryptocurrency billionaire and from a political ally who was once convicted of fraud in the United States.
“I have decided that the people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions,” Mr. Farage said in a statement that was broadcast on his party’s YouTube channel. “This will be a ‘people versus the establishment’ by-election,” he added, referring to a special parliamentary election.
The success of Mr. Farage, whose anti-immigration party has led in opinion polls for more than a year, was instrumental in destabilizing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced his resignation last month.
But Mr. Farage has suffered several setbacks lately amid growing scrutiny of his financial affairs.
In May, it emerged that he had received an undisclosed gift of 5 million pounds (about $6.7 million) from a cryptocurrency billionaire, Christopher Harborne, a Briton who lives in Thailand.
Mr. Farage argues that the gift was unconditional, was made before he won a seat in Parliament in the general election in 2024 and there was no requirement to declare it. However, Daniel Greenberg, Parliament’s standards commissioner, has opened an investigation into whether the money should have been made public under rules that require new lawmakers to declare some financial benefits received in the 12 months before their election.
Over the weekend, the Sunday Times of London reported that Mr. Farage had separately failed to declare benefits provided by a political ally, George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster who served prison time in the United States.
According to the newspaper, Mr. Cottrell’s support included providing social media staff who worked for Mr. Farage in the year before he was elected, as well as the use of a property rented by Mr. Cottrell near Buckingham Palace.
Mr. Farage has insisted he followed all of the rules and has accused journalists of “despicable behavior” and of hounding his family.
However, in his statement on Tuesday, Mr. Farage suggested that the Sunday Times article had now triggered a second investigation, saying that, “Despite the fact that many of the things that were written in the article were inaccurate or irrelevant, yet another standards investigation is underway.” U.K. Live Update » | Stephen Castle | Reporting from London | Tuesday, July 7, 2026

How the US Blunder in Iran Accelerates Its Decline and Dooms Israel | Andreas Krieg | UNAPOLOGETIC
July 4, 2026 | We sat down with Andreas Krieg for the fourth time on UNAPOLOGETIC, this time in the aftermath of the war on Iran, to ask what it has done to the balance of power across the Middle East. His answer is stark: this is the most fundamental shift in regional order in thirty years, and it has undone the American empire in a way he does not think it can recover from.
We get into why the Gulf no longer believes the United States can protect it, why its bases have become magnets for attack rather than deterrents, and why nobody in the region has a plan B for the order that is now crumbling. Andreas lays out the battle between the Israel lobby and the Gulf lobby that he believes will decide Washington's approach for years to come, the split between Marco Rubio and JD Vance, and why Iran has emerged able to impose its will without ever building a bomb.
We also talk through Iran as a network state, the Strait of Hormuz as a chokepoint, Saudi Arabia's strategic drift, Qatar's network power, Egypt reduced to a beggar state, the violation of Iraqi sovereignty, Syria under Sharaa, and why Andreas argues Israel has become a hammer that sees everything as a nail, isolated and digging itself into a hole it may not climb out of.
UNAPOLOGETIC is hosted by Ashfaaq Carim.

"Is King Charles Turning His Back on Christianity?" | David Starkey Talks... to Bijan Omrani
July 5, 2026 | The decision by King Charles III to change the nature of his role has rightly been greeted with consternation by many Christians. For the simple and powerful title of "Defender of the Faith", the monarchy's flourishing HR department has substituted the cumbersome title of "Protector of the Space for Faith within the Multi-faith Nation.”
Notice the language, the King's role is circumscribed and hemmed in by layers of cultural sensitivity. This is not the specific and expansive responsibility articulated for a powerful monarch but the qualified job description of a bureaucrat. Indeed the language is that of the professional office manager, laced as every workplace must now be with multi-cultural enforcement.
That the King has opted to redefine his role in this way is interpreted as turning away from this country's Christian roots in order to accommodate separatist and often outrightly hostile minority religions. It is, indeed, all of those things. But it is also a massive diminishment of the institution of monarchy, a taking away of its grandeur to be replaced with woke and vague platitudes which cannot possibly capture the hearts of a people. Combined with his selfish decision no longer to reside in the heart of London's ceremonial architecture, i.e. at Buckingham Palace, this week has seen The King reduce the stature of the institution he is sworn to uphold and protect.
To discuss this I'm joined by the author Bijan Omrani, who wrote the brilliant book 'Good Is An Englishman', that examines the central role of Christianity in creating and sustaining England. I hope you enjoy the episode.

— © Mark Alexander

Donald Trump Will Be Repudiated from Coast to Coast | Steve Schmidt
Donald Trump was put in power by all the wallies of America! Unfortunately, there are far too many of them to count. Millions of them, in fact. Listening to them cheering on their ‘dear leader’ is enough to make any decent person’s heart sink.
These dickheads are too stupid to realise that the man they are cheering on is taking them to the cleaners: he is enriching himself by the billion from the state coffers, and depriving them of decent healthcare, social services, much needed welfare, and renewed and replenished infrastructure. Welfare in the States is reserved for the élite, for the superrich, and for the oligarchs. They receive state welfare by the bucketful.
In one of Trump’s speeches, he said that America will never be a socialist nation. Fact is, however, it already is one — a socialist nation for the superrich. The superrich don’t receive their welfare in paltry state handouts; rather, they receive their state welfare in huge tax breaks, enormous billion-dollar state subsidies, and all manner of other financial privileges. They feast on champagne and caviar, whilst the little man has to scratch around under his master’s table for the crumbs that have fallen to the floor!
America is a nation of socialism, all right — a nation of socialism for the rich; but a nation of capitalism for the poor. It's raw capitalism for the little man. What it needs, however, is the reverse of this. It needs a good dose of socialism for the people and a cessation of socialism and handouts for the already mega rich.
That is my message to Trump. — © Mark Alexander

He May Be the King, But Is Charles Also a Bit of a Traitor? Dear Reader, You Decide
THE GUARDIAN: Britain’s religious right is fuming over a document suggesting the monarch wants to be defender of all faiths. I’m with Charles: what does that make me?
This photo has been taken from this Guardian article. | King Charles and Queen Camilla with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally (left), at St Peter's church in Wolferton, on the Sandringham estate, Norfolk, 25 January 2026. Photograph: Joe Giddens/PA
We need to talk about King Charles and specifically this: is the British monarch basically a traitor? Dr Gavin Ashenden is a former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, and he says he may be. The king is attempting to change the job description of the British monarch from “defender of the faith” to the more inclusive “protector of the space for faith within the multifaith nation”, and you can see why someone who regularly appears on GB News to lament the “woke takeover” of the church and who suggests that Islam is inherently and uniquely violent would object to this. And then some.
“While the monarch cannot technically be a traitor, we might take refuge in grammar and find that the verb carries our feelings even if the noun cannot,” spluttered Ashenden. “Parliament and the oath it presented to the king as a condition of being crowned are betrayed; the Church of England is betrayed. The constitution is betrayed; Anglicans are specifically betrayed. And Christians in general will legitimately feel abandoned at the very least. Some of them too will feel betrayed.”
And it’s not just him on the smelling salts. “Christianity, not some multifaith mishmash, is the bedrock of our nation’s laws and culture,” said Ciarán Kelly, director of the Christian Institute. “This latest move seems designed to convey the message that Christianity is just one religion among many, and that all are equally valid. They are not.”
But there are at least half a dozen problems with all this carping. » | Ravi Holy | Monday, July 6, 2026

Learning Another Language Appears to Slow Brain Ageing, Scientists Say
THE GUARDIAN: Study finds those who speak two languages have brains that appear around six years younger than those who speak one
This screenshot is from this Guardian article. | Experts also say the earlier people begin learning a second language, the better for their brain age. Photograph: StayHomeTakePhotos/Alamy
Learning another language could slow ageing in the brain by up to 13 years, according to research.
People who speak more than one language seem to have younger brains and the more languages you speak and the earlier you speak them, the better, according to findings from a study being presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies conference in Barcelona.
The study found that those who spoke two languages had brains that appeared around six years younger than those who spoke only one language. People who spoke three languages had brains that appeared around seven years younger, and for those who spoke four languages, their brains appeared about 13 years younger.
