À peine Léon XIV a-t-il posé le pied au Cameroun, où il a été accueilli très chaleureusement mardi après-midi, qu’il est entré dans le vif du sujet face aux autorités publiques qui le recevaient avec les honneurs. Il les a appelées à « la transparence dans la gestion des ressources publiques et au respect de l’État de droit ». Il leur a demandé un « examen de conscience » pour un « saut qualitatif courageux » et une « conduite de vie intègre » de façon « à briser les chaînes de la corruption qui défigurent l’autorité en la vidant de sa crédibilité ». Il a également recommandé de « libérer le cœur de cette soif de gain qui est une idolâtrie ». Il parlait en présence du président Paul Biya, 93 ans, doyen des chefs d’État dans le monde, au pouvoir depuis 1982 et réélu en octobre dernier à l’issue d’un scrutin contesté et émaillé de manifestations réprimées dans le sang. « La sécurité est une priorité, mais elle doit toujours s’exercer dans le respect des droits de l’Homme », a ajouté le pape.
Le ton était toutefois donné pour ce séjour de trois jours dans ce pays bigarré souvent appelé « l’Afrique en miniature ». On y parle 250 langues à travers 200 ethnies, avec une forte présence musulmane au nord (20 % de la population), catholique (29 %) et protestante (20%) dans le reste du pays. De fortes violences agitent la partie anglophone dans le Nord-Ouest du Cameroun en raison de poussées séparatistes qui ont fait des milliers de morts et des centaines de milliers de déplacés depuis près d’une décennie. Vice President JD Vance invoked World War II on Tuesday to defend the U.S. bombing of Iran from criticism by Pope Leo XIV, extending the Trump administration’s spat with the Catholic Church and underlining the White House’s struggle to justify an unpopular war.

Die EU-Kommission setzt den designierten neuen ungarischen Regierungschef Peter Magyar unter Druck, grünes Licht zum geplanten 90-Milliarden-Euro-Kredit für die Ukraine zu geben. Der am Sonntag abgewählte Amtsinhaber Viktor Orbán hatte die Auszahlung beim EU-Gipfel im März mit einem Veto blockiert.
Doch auch Brüssel ist gefordert. Magyar möchte so schnell wie möglich an EU-Mittel im Wert von rund 17 Milliarden Euro kommen, die die EU-Kommission wegen Rechtsstaats-Problemen und Korruption auf Eis gelegt hat. Rechnet man noch zurückgehaltene Gelder aus dem Rüstungsfonds SAFE hinzu, geht es um insgesamt 35 Milliarden Euro.
Die Auszahlung der EU-Gelder war ein zentrales und womöglich entscheidendes Wahlversprechen in Budapest. Die spanische Fluggesellschaft Iberia hat am Montag die Aussetzung ihrer Direktflüge zwischen Madrid und Havanna vom 1. Juni bis zum 24. Oktober 2026 bestätigt. Betroffene Passagiere können laut Iberia ihre Reise auf einen Termin bis Oktober 2027 umbuchen, auf ein alternatives Reiseziel ausweichen – darunter Miami, Mexiko-Stadt, Panama-Stadt und Santo Domingo – oder eine Erstattung beantragen.
Bereits im Mai will Iberia die Frequenz von derzeit drei auf zwei wöchentliche Verbindungen reduzieren. Ab Juni bleibt Reisenden als einzige Iberia-nahe Option der Umweg über Panama mit der Partnerfluggesellschaft Copa Airlines, mit der Iberia ein Codeshare-Abkommen unterhält. Die Büros der Fluggesellschaft in Havanna bleiben nach eigenen Angaben geöffnet.
