Regardless of what unfolds in the coming days and weeks, the fact that Vladimir Putin is once again menacing and stalking the world stage requires those of us committed to peace to act. In the UK, that means getting our own house in order.
Let there be no doubt: when it comes to tackling Russian aggression, the Labour party supports the UK government and our allies. Those who equivocate between the actions of Russia and Nato are misguided or worse. The unified approach of recent weeks has surprised the Kremlin precisely because it is so used to encountering division. Those divisions have contributed to decades of failure in dealing with Russia.
The Putin playbook is well known. He favours chaos over order, the fog of war over clear strategy. He takes a nihilistic, zero-sum approach to foreign policy. Illicit money and influence are used as a judo move that turns the openness and freedom of western democracies into weaknesses. Over almost 12 years of Tory government, the tendrils of the Kremlin have been allowed to wrap around the UK, turning London into the “money-laundering capital of the world”. A cottage industry has been created that directly and indirectly does the bidding of those linked to Putin. Last week, it was revealed that £1.5bn of UK property had been snapped up by Russians accused of corruption or linked to the Kremlin. Pro-russischer Rebellenchef in Donezk verkündet „Generalmobilmachung“

Der Chef der pro-russischen Rebellen in der selbsternannten „Volksrepublik“ Donezk in der Ostukraine hat zur „Generalmobilmachung“ aufgerufen. „Heute habe ich ein Dekret über die Generalmobilmachung unterzeichnet“, sagte Denis Puschilin in einer am Samstag veröffentlichten Video-Botschaft. Er rief die Reservisten auf, „in die Einschreibebüros des Militärs zu kommen“. Zudem warfen sich die ukrainische Armee und die pro-russischen Rebellen am Samstag gegenseitig schwere Verstöße gegen die Waffenruhe vor.
Puschilin beteuerte in dem Video, seine Soldaten hätten von der Ukraine geplante Angriffe vereitelt. Die ukrainische Armee setze ihre Angriffe fort. „Zusammen werden wir für uns alle den Sieg erringen, den wir wünschen und verdienen“, sagte der Rebellenführer. „Wir werden den Donbas und das ganze russische Volk schützen.“
Puschilin forderte in seiner Ansprache Zivilisten zur Flucht in das Nachbarland Russland auf. Ukraine: Russia Plans Biggest War in Europe since 1945 - Boris Johnson
BBC: Evidence suggests Russia is planning "the biggest war in Europe since 1945", Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.
He told the BBC's Sophie Raworth in an interview: "All the signs are that the plan has already in some senses begun."
Intelligence suggests Russia intends to launch an invasion that will encircle Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Mr Johnson said.
"People need to understand the sheer cost in human life that could entail," he said.
The prime minister was speaking from Munich, where world leaders are meeting for an annual security conference.

Why Brexit Failed and Why It Was Always Certain to Be a Disaster
Feb 19, 2022 • Brexit was always certain to fail. It was a stupid idea dishonestly foisted upon a largely gullible public who were seduced by simple slogans such as 'Take Back Control.' Before the referendum Britain was reasonably prosperous and harmonious. After 45 years of dealing with and being an integral part of the biggest and most powerful trading block just 22 miles away the British public voted to leave with the meaningless promise that we would no longer be ruled by 'faceless bureaucrats in Brussels' and that we could instead strike new deals with countries all over the world.
Within a year of officially leaving the EU, it is clear that such new trade deals will be very hard to achieve. In the meantime, in what may well be the biggest act of self-harm ever imposed by any nation on itself, we have erected barriers to trade with the EU which for many are insurmountable and for others a huge inconvenience and additional expense.
It is plain to see that Brexit is a massive failure but one that cannot be reversed. We are now faced with almost inevitable economic decline and all that goes with it.

Das hinderte sie nicht daran, die Welt mit Meldungen über einen bevorstehenden Krieg zu erschrecken.
Seit den Warnungen vor Saddam Husseins Vernichtungswaffen steht es allerdings mit der Glaubwürdigkeit des politisch-nachrichtendienstlichen Komplexes in Amerika nicht zum Besten. Washington hat ein bisschen zu oft gelogen.
Selbst wenn sich Russland zurückzieht, wie es behauptet, bleiben die Absichten hinter der in Osteuropa seit Hitlers Überfall auf die Sowjetunion präzedenzlosen Truppenkonzentration von zentraler Bedeutung. Samedi matin, un soldat ukrainien a été tué par un éclat d’obus et les dirigeants des deux républiques séparatistes prorusses de cette région de l’est de l’Ukraine ont décrété « la mobilisation générale ».
Coup sur coup, vendredi, les autorités séparatistes avaient annoncé des explosions et mis en scène l’évacuation de la population vers la Russie. Ces violences, présentées comme des provocations ukrainiennes, pourraient servir de prétextes à une intervention militaire russe. Les images, filmées par les séparatistes puis largement diffusées par les télévisions aux ordres du Kremlin, pourraient permettre à Vladimir Poutine de justifier l’opération auprès de sa propre opinion publique. Les autorités prorusses avaient d’abord déclaré qu’une voiture piégée avait explosé près d’un bâtiment officiel, à Donetsk, ville sous leur contrôle. Puis, dans la cité voisine de Lougansk, une portion de gazoduc avait pris feu après une « puissante explosion », selon les agences de presse russes citant des correspondants sur place puis une deuxième détonation avait retenti. Wenn Krieg droht, wogen die Gefühle durcheinander. Maria Symtschytsch, ihr Mann Wolodymyr und die drei Kinder haben diese Erfahrung in den letzten Tagen gemacht. Russland zieht rund um die Ukraine Soldaten zusammen. Sollten Präsident Putins Bodentruppen vom Norden her vorrücken, etwa vom Gebiet ihres Verbündeten Belarus her, vorbei an der verstrahlten Zone von Tschernobyl, würden sie nach etwa achtzig Kilometern die Hauptstadt Kiew erreichen.
Obolon ist ein Stadtbezirk im Kiewer Norden, da, wo die Panzer dann auf die Hauptstadt träfen. Er ist bekannt für das hier gebraute Bier gleichen Namens. Hier lebt Familie Symtschytsch. In einem achtstöckigen Wohnblock, Baujahr 1978, besitzt sie eine Eigentumswohnung. Sohn Iwan ist schon erwachsen, Solomija ist neun, Marko sieben Jahre alt. Die schwarze Katze Warwara wirkt jung, ist aber schon 13.
In dieser Woche haben die Kinder der Familie neue Erfahrungen gemacht. Ihre Mutter Maria, genannt Mascha, arbeitet als Fotografin für internationale Bildagenturen. WASHINGTON — President Biden said on Friday that the United States has intelligence showing that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has made a final decision to reject diplomatic overtures and invade Ukraine, in what Mr. Biden said would be a “catastrophic and needless war of choice” in Eastern Europe.
Speaking from the Roosevelt Room in the White House, Mr. Biden said “we have reason to believe the Russian forces are planning to and intend to attack Ukraine in the coming week, in the coming days,” adding that “we believe that they will target Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, a city of 2.8 million innocent people.”
Asked whether he thinks that Mr. Putin is still wavering about whether to invade, Mr. Biden said, “I’m convinced he’s made the decision.” Later, he added that his impression of Mr. Putin’s intentions is based on “a significant intelligence capability.”
Still, Mr. Biden implored Russia to “choose diplomacy.”

If Boris Johnson’s recent reshuffle had an overarching purpose it was to show Conservative MPs that a beleaguered prime minister was listening to them. This is the perspective in which the most eye-catching ministerial move, the appointment of Jacob Rees-Mogg as minister for “Brexit opportunities”, should also primarily be seen. Mr Johnson wants his MPs to be reassured that his faith in Brexit is undiminished and that he has installed another ardent leaver at his side after the departure of Lord Frost.
What is less clear, though, is exactly what Mr Rees-Mogg is there to do. He has not simply taken over from Lord Frost, whose responsibility for negotiations with the EU was transferred to the foreign secretary, Liz Truss. Number of Adults Who Identify as LGBT Has Doubled in Past Decade, Study Finds

A new Gallup poll has found that the number of Americans who identify as something other than heterosexual has doubled in the last decade.
Currently, 7.1% of Americans consider themselves to have an LGBT identity, according to the study, which was based on aggregated 2021 data and included interviews with more than 12,000 U.S. adults. That figure is more than double from 3.5% in 2012.
Of the adults surveyed, 86.3% said they are straight or heterosexual, and 6.6% offered no opinion.
The study also revealed that while LGBT identification has been stable in older generations, it has risen significantly in younger generations. Over 20% of Gen Z adults -- those born between 1997 and 1999 -- identify as LGBT, followed by 10.5% of millennials, 4.5% of Generation X and 2.6% of baby boomers. » |Tony Morrison | Thursday, February 17, 2022

Ukraine Crisis: Corruption Alert over Russians with £1.5bn of British Property
THE TIMES: UK property worth £1.5 billion was bought by Russians with links to the Kremlin or accused of corruption, according to newly released figures.
Nearly £430 million of the property is in Westminster in London, and more than half is held by companies in Britain’s overseas territories and crown dependencies.
Transparency International, the campaign group that unearthed the figures, said the findings exposed how Britain had become a “global hub for money laundering”. It identified 2,189 companies registered in the UK, Britain’s overseas territories and crown dependencies that have been used in 48 Russian money-laundering and corruption cases.

Elon Musk has been criticised by the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum for comparing the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, to Adolf Hitler.
The chief executive of Tesla tweeted a meme that showed a photo of Hitler with the words “Stop comparing me to Justin Trudeau” above the image and “I had a budget” below. The tweet was later deleted.
Musk’s use of Hitler’s image “disrespects the memory of all victims and hurts many people”, said the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum, which is on the site of the Nazi concentrate camp where 960,000 people were killed.
“Using the image of Adolf Hitler & therefore exploiting the tragedy of all people who suffered, were humiliated, tortured & murdered by the totalitarian regime of Nazi Germany created by him is sad & disturbing,” the museum tweeted in reply to Musk.
The American Jewish Committee said the billionaire’s tweet was unacceptable and demanded he apologise. “Once again, Elon Musk has exercised extremely poor judgment by invoking Hitler to make a point on social media. He must stop this unacceptable behaviour,” it said.

Die Begeisterungsstürme liessen nicht lange auf sich warten. Von einem «historischen Erfolg» wollte die konservative Europaabgeordnete Monika Hohlmeier sprechen, als der Europäische Gerichtshof (EuGH) sein Urteil in den Rechtssachen C-156/21 und C-157/21 verkündete. Hier habe das oberste Gericht der EU ein «starkes Signal für Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit» gesetzt, freute sich die grüne Abgeordnete Terry Reintke.
Die Freude im EU-Parlament ist gross, dass die Luxemburger Richter am Mittwoch ein Verfahren für rechtens erklärt haben, mit dem zum ersten Mal Verstösse gegen die Rechtsstaatlichkeit finanziell geahndet werden können. Entlang der Frontlinie, welche die von Kiew kontrollierten Gebiete in der Ostukraine von den beiden durch Russland unterstützten Separatistengebieten Donezk und Luhansk trennt, scheint sich die Lage erheblich zuzuspitzen. Das ist heikel, weil aufgrund der militärischen Bereitschaft die Lage sehr schnell ausser Kontrolle geraten kann – mit unkalkulierbaren Folgen bis hin zum direkten Eingreifen russischer Truppen.

L’essor mondial des cryptomonnaies inquiète les pays du G20

Les cryptomonnaies se sont invitées à la table du G20. Les ministres des Finances et les banquiers centraux de ces 20 pays qui pèsent 80 % du PIB mondial sont réunis jusqu’à ce vendredi, les uns en visioconférence, les autres à Djakarta, sous présidence indonésienne. Outre les préoccupations sur la croissance, menacée par les tensions russo-ukrainiennes, la distribution des vaccins anti-Covid dans le monde et le financement des pays en développement, les risques liés aux cryptoactifs figurent à l’ordre du jour.
L’inquiétude «porte aujourd’hui sur la hausse très rapide et importante du marché des cryptomonnaies», résume-t-on à Bercy. La valorisation des milliers de différents cryptoactifs en circulation dans le monde a plus que triplé pendant l’année 2021. Elle a atteint 2600 milliards de dollars, dont 1200 milliards pour le seul bitcoin, le plus connu et le plus puissant des «cryptos». La volatilité de ces actifs virtuels utilisant la technologie des registres décentralisés de la blockchain est telle qu’après le pic de l’automne, ils ne pèsent «plus que» 1500 milliards de dollars environ. » | Par Fabrice Nodé-Langlois | jeudi 17 février 2022

Überall an der Algarve spielt Wind eine Rolle, sei es als Freund oder als Feind. Von Vila Real de Santo António an der spanischen Grenze geht es mit dem Zug über Faro bis nach Lagos.
Mit der Bahn durchstreifen wir die Algarve. Abseits der bekannten Traumstrände liegt das größte natürliche Riff Portugals. Aus dem traditionellen Rohstoff Kork werden Taschen und Schuhe produziert. Und überall spielt Wind eine Rolle – als Freund oder Feind.
Von Vila Real de Santo António an der spanischen Grenze geht es über Faro und Tunes bis nach Lagos im Westen. In der Algarve fahren 60 Jahre alte Dieseltriebwagen der portugiesischen Staatsbahn CP, die andernorts längst ausrangiert worden sind. Sie verbreiten einerseits eine gute Portion Nostalgie, stellen andererseits aber eine ordentliche Herausforderung für die Lokführer dar, die die Fahrzeuge unterwegs schon mal notdürftig reparieren müssen. Mindestens drei Stunden brauchen die betagten Züge für die 140 Kilometer lange Strecke, genügend Zeit, um ein Gefühl für die Landschaft der Algarve zu entwickeln, der südlichsten Region Portugals.
Der flache Osten ist geprägt durch Sonne, Sand und Salz, der felsige Westen durch Wald, Wind und Wellen. Die Einheimischen nutzen, was sie haben. Castro Marim ist bekannt für vorzügliches Meersalz und Santa Luzia für köstliche Kraken. Herzmuscheln gedeihen in der Laguna Formosa, einem 60 Kilometer langen Naturpark vor der Sandküste östlich von Faro. Sandstein kommt in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen vor, von weich an der spektakulären Felsküste westlich von Faro bis vergleichsweise hart, verbaut in der Burg von Silves.
Städte wie Silves, Tavira, Faro und Lagos erzählen von Blütezeiten im Mittelalter, sowohl als in der Algarve Muslime herrschten als auch später, als portugiesische Seefahrer von dort zu Entdeckungsreisen aufbrachen.
