Argentine Militant Groups Threaten Princess Royal Over Falklands
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The Princess Royal has been threatened by militant Argentinian groups as she begins the first official senior royal engagement to the South American country for 14 years.
The three-day visit is being made in Princess Anne's capacity as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
She will attend the opening ceremony of the 125th session of the International Olympic Committee at the Theatre Colon in Buenos Aires this evening.
Protest group Quebracho – which led riots against the British Embassy in Buenos Aires last April – has vowed to disrupt proceedings, claiming it will be able to enter the theatre.
Leader Toni Lopez said: "Come pirate princess Anne of England, daughter of Elizabeth II, the Queen, who ordered the attack on Falklands in 1982. Come if you believe you can walk through Argentina as usual. » | Telegraph’s Foreign Staff | Friday, September 06, 2013

Tony Blair on Syria: Not to Act Is 'Dangerous'
BBC: As arguments for and against military action in Syria continue to dominate the G20 summit in St. Petersburg and proceedings on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tony Blair has explained why he believes intervention is necessary.
Mr Blair, Middle East envoy for the quartet of the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia, said: "It's pretty clear frankly who is responsible for [the chemical attack], and not to act is dangerous.
"You're sending a signal that such a use of chemical weapons can take place, without the international community having a robust, and proper, response." Listen to BBC audio » | Friday, September 06, 2013

Spain Offers Argentina Falklands Support
Jose [sic] Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spain's foreign minister, compared his country's battle to get Britain to surrender sovereignty over Gibraltar – a small, rocky outpost ruled by Britain for three centuries – with Argentina's demand for control of the Falklands Islands.
"The similarities are enormous," Mr Garcia-Margallo said from Montevideo, Uruguay adding that both Gibraltar and Falklands were in need of "decolonisation."
Argentina is embroiled in an escalating diplomatic row with Britain over the Falkland Islands, the object of a brief, bloody 1982 war which Buenos Aires lost.
Mr Garcia-Margallo added that Argentina "can count on Spain's support" in its effort to regain control of the Falklands. » | AFP | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Syria Crisis: Al-Qaeda Seizes Village that Still Speaks the Ancient Language of Christ
Fighting raged through the picturesque mountain village of Maaloula, near Damascus, on Thursday, as the regime launched a counter-attack against the rebels.
"They entered the main square and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary," said one resident of the area, speaking by phone and too frightened to give his name. "They shelled us from the nearby mountain. Two shells hit the St Thecla convent."
Maaloula, tucked into the honey-coloured cliffs of a mountain range north of Damascus and on a "tentative" list of applicants for Unesco world heritage status, is associated with the earliest days of Christianity.
St Thecla, who is supposedly buried in the convent, was a follower of St Paul who fled to the village in Syria to avoid marriage, having taken an oath of chastity. It is said that the cleft of rock in which the convent is placed opened up to allow her to escape her pursuers.
The inhabitants are mostly Melkite Greek Catholic and Orthodox Christians, but have historically lived peacefully alongside a Sunni Muslim minority. It is one of only three places in the world where Western Aramaic, a dialect of the language spoken by Christ, is still used. » | Ruth Sherlock, Beirut and Magdy Samaan | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Syria Crisis: Barack Obama Faces Growing Opposition to Airstrikes as He Arrives for G20
Mr Obama arrived [at] St Petersburg for a tense G20 summit amid signs that Russia's opposition to US airstrikes was gaining significant international support.
Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, welcomed Mr Obama to his home town in an encounter that laid bare the increasingly difficult relationship between the two men.
After exchanging a stiff handshake and stern looks, Mr Obama and Mr Putin offered fixed smiles for the cameras before entering the Konstantinovsky Palace.
In the summit room, diplomats said the two men were seated well aware [sic: away] from each other and did not speak to one another directly during opening talks about the world economy.
The awkward initial encounter came after some other leaders arriving in St Petersburg pointedly sided with Russia in its opposition to US-led military action.
Intervention would damage the global economy by pushing up oil prices, China said. Syria is not a significant oil exporter, but the prospect of conflict in the Middle East often pushes up oil prices.
"Military action would have a negative impact on the global economy, especially on the oil price - it will cause a hike in the oil price," said Zhu Guangyao, the Chinese Vice Finance Minister.
Brazil, India and South Africa also worry that intervention would do economic harm, according to Mr Putin's officials.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said the leaders of the large emerging economies spoke before the St Petersburg summit and agreed that Syrian intervention would have an "extremely negative effect" on the global economy." » | James Kirkup, Political Editor in St Petersburg | Thursday, September 05, 2013

History Is Already against Us, Even without Obama, Assad et al
THE INDEPENDENT: Immediate threats are alarming and there is no comfort from longer perspectives
We are in a mess. Though there have been graver crises, the world has never been more unstable and more dangerous. Diplomatically, militarily and morally, the West is adrift. President Obama is at the core of the short-term dégringolade. Poison gas is not a uniquely horrible weapon. The massacre of the innocents did not start with the recent atrocity, and it is not clear what a retaliatory strike could achieve.
Perhaps it is all Prince George’s fault. The sight of the baby Prince, in his mother’s arms, his sleeping face peeping through the swaddling clothes, was an epiphany: a triumph of hope, renewal and joy. A few weeks later, there was a hideous contrast. We saw the Syrian babies, their faces peeping through their swaddling clothes, in the sleep of death. For hope, renewal and joy, substitute grief, horror and barbarism.
Even so, military action should not depend on emotion and TV footage. It should follow from a President’s rational exercise of his authority. Mr Obama had spoken of red lines. We all thought that we knew what he meant. It turned out that he had no idea what he meant. Even if there is some action, it would be a bit like punishing a dog today for using the carpet as a lavatory a fortnight ago. It would neither cripple Assad, encourage his enemies – nor restore American prestige. That latter cannot happen as long as this fellow is President.
Barack Obama is the creature of a Chicago machine, the political descendants of Al Capone. Ruthless election-winners, they needed a respectable front. Mr Obama was perfect. Although he had never said or done anything to suggest that he was presidential timber, his name and his colour were enough. Such critical faculties as the liberal bien-pensantry possessed were instantly suspended. The Nobel Prize committee members made idiots of themselves. But the height of absurdity was attained with the claim that he was a great orator. In reality, his speeches consist of indifferent rhetoric delivered in a flat voice. George W Bush was a far better speaker. » | Bruce Anderson | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Russia Mocks Britain, The Little Island
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Russia mocked Britain today as “a small island no one listens to”, sparking a diplomatic spat with David Cameron.
The Prime Minister insisted that Britain remained a major world power.
Tensions surrounding the Syrian crisis boiled over at a G20 summit in St Petersburg. Mr Cameron has backed calls for military intervention in Syria after the Assad regime allegedly used chemical weapons.
Mr Putin has opposed intervention and questioned Western claims about the attack. Britain has faced questions about its role and influence in the world since Mr Cameron was embarrassed by last week’s Commons vote to rule out a military strike against Syria.
Dmitry Peskov, Mr Putin’s official spokesman, is said to have highlighted that embarrassment, telling Russian journalists that Britain was now diplomatically irrelevant.
Britain is “just a small island … no one pays any attention to them”, Mr Peskov is reported to have said. The blunt remarks appeared to realise British fears that the Russians would use the St Petersburg summit to upstage Mr Cameron over his criticism of Syria, Russia’s closest Middle Eastern ally. » | James Kirkup, St Petersburg | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Pre-paid Strike: Arab States Ready to Pick Up US Tab for Syria Attack
Flüchtlinge: Österreich will vorab Christen
» | Tagesanzeiger.ch/Newsnet | Von Bernhard Odehnal, Wien | Donnerstag, 05. September 2013

US and UK Spy Agencies Defeat Privacy and Security on the Internet
US and British intelligence agencies have successfully cracked much of the online encryption relied upon by hundreds of millions of people to protect the privacy of their personal data, online transactions and emails, according to top-secret documents revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden.
The files show that the National Security Agency and its UK counterpart GCHQ have broadly compromised the guarantees that internet companies have given consumers to reassure them that their communications, online banking and medical records would be indecipherable to criminals or governments.
The agencies, the documents reveal, have adopted a battery of methods in their systematic and ongoing assault on what they see as one of the biggest threats to their ability to access huge swathes of internet traffic – "the use of ubiquitous encryption across the internet".
Those methods include covert measures to ensure NSA control over setting of international encryption standards, the use of supercomputers to break encryption with "brute force", and – the most closely guarded secret of all – collaboration with technology companies and internet service providers themselves. » | James Ball, Julian Borger and Glenn Greenwald | Thursday, September 05, 2013
Russian Law Proposes Removing Gay Parents' Children
THE GUARDIAN: Proposal highlights Putin's hardline course on social issues as he seeks to boost support among conservative voters
A member of Russian president Vladimir Putin's ruling party tabled a draft law on Thursday to take children away from homosexual parents, adding to a series of measures that activists say are undermining gay rights.
The draft law, which follows legislation banning gay "propaganda", would add homosexuality to a list of conditions including drug and child abuse that can lead to parents being stripped of custody over their children.
The proposal highlights the more hardline course on social issues that Putin has charted in his third presidential term as he seeks to boost support among conservative voters.
"In the case when a parent has sexual contact with people of their own gender, the damage that can be inflicted on the psyche of a child is enormous," Alexei Zhuravlyov, author of the draft, wrote in submitting it to the Russian parliament's lower house, the Duma. He said between 5% and 7% of people across Russia were of "non-traditional" sexual orientation and at least a third of those had children.
It was not clear if Zhuravlyov's proposal had a strong chance of becoming law, but it follows other legislation signed by Putin that rights activists and western governments say are discriminatory against homosexuals. » | Reuters in Moscow | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Iranian President Tweets Rosh Hashanah Blessing to Jews
THE GUARDIAN: Hassan Rouhani's message to mark start of Jewish new year unexpected in Israel, which has identified Iran as security threat
Amid a global exchange of greetings and good wishes to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, which began at sunset on Wednesday, there was one from a particularly surprising quarter.
Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, tweeted: "As the sun is about to set here in #Tehran I wish all Jews, especially Iranian Jews, a blessed Rosh Hashanah." A picture of an Iranian Jew praying at a synagogue in Tehran accompanied the tweet.
According to a 2012 census, there are fewer than 9,000 Jews among Iran's population of about 75 million.
The message from Rouhani was unexpected in Israel, which has identified Iran as a huge threat to its security. It says the regime is developing a nuclear weapons programme that could be used to annihilate the Jewish state.
Rouhani, who was elected in June, has pledged to tone down the "hate rhetoric" used by his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. » | Harriet Sherwood in Jerusalem | Thursday, September 05, 2013

Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin Set for Collision over Syria at G20 Summit
THE GUARDIAN: Russian president signals he will take action if America strikes at Assad as US counterpart admits relations have hit a wall
World leaders will gather in St Petersburg on Thursday for what has transformed into an international showdown with Vladimir Putin threatening to send a missile shield to Syria if the US launches an attack without the authority of the United Nations.
The G20 summit, hosted by Putin, had been expected to focus on the world economy and growth, but will now be dominated by the Middle East crisis, even if the formal agenda remains fixed on the slowdown of growth in emerging markets.
Barack Obama, speaking during a stopover in Sweden before the summit, denied his political credibility was at stake but admitted relations with Russia had hit a wall. He insisted he had not set the red lines requiring a military response if the Syrian government deployed chemical weapons.
"The world set a red line when governments representing 98% of the world's population said the use of chemical weapons was abhorrent and passed a treaty forbidding their use even when countries are engaged in war," he said. "That was not something I just kind of made up, I did not pluck it out of thin air."
He added: "My credibility is not on the line. The international community's credibility is on the line because we give lip service to the notion that these international norms are important. » | Patrick Wintour and Dan Roberts in Washington | Wednesday, September 04, 2013

Syria Crisis: Pope Tells Vladimir Putin World Leaders Have Allowed 'Senseless Massacre'
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Pope Francis has written to Vladimir Putin criticising world leaders for standing by while a "senseless massacre" unfolded in Syria.
In a letter sent on Sept 4 to Mr Putin in his role of host of the G20 conference, and published on Thursday, Francis wrote: "It is regrettable that, from the very beginning of the conflict in Syria, one-sided interests have prevailed and in fact hindered the search for a solution that would have avoided the senseless massacre now unfolding."
Through Mr Putin, Francis appealed to the G20 leaders gathering in Russia: "The leaders of the G20 cannot remain indifferent to the dramatic situation of the beloved Syrian people which has lasted far too long, and even risks bringing greater suffering to a region bitterly tested by strife and needful of peace.
"To the leaders present, to each and every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution."
He added: "Rather, let there be a renewed commitment to seek, with courage and determination, a peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation of the parties, unanimously supported by the international community. Moreover, all governments have the moral duty to do everything possible to ensure humanitarian assistance to those suffering because of the conflict, both within and beyond the country's borders." » | Tom Kington, Vatican City | Thursday, September 05, 2013
My comment:
The vainglorious Obama is going to find himself increasingly isolated in this rush to war with Syria. And inasmuch as he will isolate himself, he will isolate America too. People are weary of all these wars, especially so because they achieve nothing. They are not decisive. Wars should only ever be fought when absolutely necessary, when all else fails. This is not the case here.
Not everyone is convinced that it was Bashar Al-Assad who perpetrated the chemical attack on his people. In fact, many are convinced that it was the rebels who perpetrated it, in the hope of dragging the West, especially the US into the war in order to topple Bashar Al-Assad.
In any case, if America and France go in there and bomb Damascus to smithereens, what will be achieved, except more killing and suffering? Haven't the poor Syrians suffered enough already?
More than two million Syrians have been turned into refugees. And Bashar Al-Assad cannot be held totally responsible for this calamity, either. Barack Obama's talk of an assault on Damascus will surely have frightened very many Syrians into a decision to leave their country for safer havens. So how humanitarian is that?
We need to ask ourselves some fundamental questions here: What is to be achieved by military action? How much more suffering will military action cause? What are the risks of turning this civil war into a regional conflict? And what are the chances of a regional conflict turning into a world war? World wars have been started by far less in the past. And what can we expect to happen in Syria if Bashar Al-Assad is toppled? Won't it be worse for the Syrians? An Islamic theocracy might well be the ultimate outcome of such a military intervention.
And isn't it true to say that Obama wants to show his 'tough credentials' here? Isn't he trying to get this military action started for his own self-image? I wouldn't trust the man or his judgement.
It must be remembered that even if it was Bashar Al-Assad who perpetrated this crime against the Syrian people, military action will only make matters worse, and certainly won't stop the ongoing suffering; on the contrary, it will add to it.
And where is the money going to come from to wage this war? And what about the cost of the necessary beefed-up security back home in the US if hostilities break out? Where's the money for that going to come from? Moreover, if Obama really does want to keep his countrymen safe, it would be better for him not to entice bomb attacks on his homeland by rogues who will be hell-bent on seeking revenge.
That part of the world is a hornets' nest. It will be easily upset. And God only knows what will ensue. May God protect us all! – © Mark

G-20 in St. Petersburg: Putin Plays Cat and Mouse with Obama
SPIEGEL ONLINE INTERNATIONAL: Barack Obama will seek further support from the world's leading political players at the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg. But Russian President Vladimir Putin is already looking forward to a showdown with the US president.
Vladimir Putin has the home field advantage. As the host of the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, he can control the images and the logistics of the meeting of the world's most important industrialized and emerging economies inside the Constantine Palace, also known as the "Russian Versailles." He can hardly wait to show it off, complete with its glistening hardwood floors, to Barack Obama. The G-20, Putin has said, will provide "a good platform" to discuss the problems in Syria.
The irony is that it is Putin himself who is so vehemently objecting to such diplomatic solutions.
The political frontlines have been established. On Wednesday night, the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee gave its approval for a limited military strike, though the House of Representatives hasn't yet voted on the issue. In St. Petersburg, Obama is expected to seek international support for his policy course. » | Marc Pitzke in New York | Thursday, September 05, 2013

G-20-Gipfel in St. Petersburg: Obama will homosexuelle Aktivisten treffen
In St. Petersburg will er homosexuelle Aktivisten treffen.

» | Source AFP | jeudi 05 septembre 2013

Assad Warns of ‘Regional War’ in French Interview
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told French daily Le Figaro Monday that the use of nerve gas against targets in rebel-held parts of Syria would have been “illogical”, while warning that an attack on his country could set off a “regional war”.
In excerpts of an interview to be published in full in Tuesday’s edition of the newspaper, Assad challenged French President François Hollande and US President Barack Obama to provide convincing proof that he had used weapons of mass destruction against his own people.
"Those who make accusations must show evidence,” he told Le Figaro. “We challenge the United States and France to do this. Obama and Hollande have been incapable of doing this, including for their own people.” (+ video) » | Tony Todd | Tuesday, September 03, 2013

No"?
» | AG/red | Dienstag, 03. September 2013

Österreichs Krieger kehren aus Syrien heim
Wien. September 2013

Nazi-Klunker: US-Auktionshaus versteigert Hitlers Rubinring
» | rls/dpa | Mittwoch, 04. September 2013

» | Source AFP | mercredi 04 septembre 2013

NSA-Affäre: Brasiliens Senat will Journalist Greenwald unter Polizeischutz stellen
» | fab/AFP | Mittwoch, 04. September 2013
