Queen Addresses United Nations General Assembly in New York

THE TELEGRAPH: The Queen told the United Nations it had “moved from being a high-minded aspiration to being a real force for common good” as she addressed the General Assembly in New York for the first time since 1957.

In a reflective speech to an assembly whose members states have increased from 77 to 192 since her last visit, the Queen praised the UN for its work in reducing conflict, offering humanitarian assistance and tackling the effects of poverty.

The “waging of peace” was “perhaps the hardest leadership of all”, she said.

However, she warned that “so much remains to be done”, quoting Dag Hammarskjold, a former UN secretary-general, who “once said that 'constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon’.”

She added: “Good nurses get better with practice; sadly the supply of patients never ceases.”

The Queen also warned that “new challenges” such as terrorism and global warming had emerged that had “tested this organisation as much as its member states”. On climate change, “careful account must be taken of the risks facing smaller, more vulnerable nations, many of them from the Commonwealth”, she said.

She said she hoped that, in another 53 years, “our sincerity, our willingness to take a lead, and our determination to do the right thing, will stand the test of time”.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh spent only five hours in New York, sweltering under heat health warnings as temperatures soared to a record 103 degrees. >>> Tom Leonard, New York | Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Andy, Rivals in Mosque Split

NEW YORK POST: Andrew Cuomo and his GOP challengers are splitting sharply on the hotly contested question of building a mosque near Ground Zero, even as they're in surprising agreement on the need to cut taxes and spending.

Attorney General Cuomo said he favored building the mosque, which polls show is opposed by most city residents, including many who say it would be an insult to 9/11 victims.

Cuomo, who polls show is the overwhelming favorite to be the state's next governor, said through a spokesman, "America is all about diversity and tolerance and, thus, we should let this project proceed, even though it may justifiably make some people uncomfortable and offend some of our sensibilities."

Republican gubernatorial designee and one-time Long Island Rep. Rick Lazio "opposes the plan to build the Cordoba mosque across from Ground Zero, and shares the concerns of many over the [proposed mosque's] imam's view that Hamas is not a terrorist organization," said his spokesman, Barney Keller.

"Rick views the questions surrounding the overseas sources of funding for this project as a potential security risk."

Buffalo builder and megamillionaire Carl Paladino, a Tea Party activist expected to challenge Lazio in the GOP primary, said, "I am dead set against the mosque at Ground Zero because it's an affront to Americans everywhere.

"It just doesn't make sense to build a needlessly bold and insulting statement on hallowed ground where radical Islamists declared war on America." Continue reading and comment >>> Fredric U. Dicker | Monday, July 05, 2010

Obama Says U.S.-Israel Bond Is 'Unbreakable'

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama, flanked by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, on Tuesday hailed the bond between the U.S. and Israel as "unbreakable" and said the two agreed on concrete steps to begin direct talks on Mideast peace.

The two, speaking with reporters in the Oval Office after meeting for about an hour, dismissed claims that relations between the countries had cooled in recent months and reaffirmed their shared interest, particularly in the area of national security and peace.

Mr. Obama said Mr. Netanyahu was prepared to take "risks" on Mideast peace and praised the prime minister for recently instituting a partial freeze on Jewish construction in disputed territories.

Mr. Netanyahu said the two discussed "concrete" steps they would take in the coming weeks to help move toward direct talks on Mideast peace. Mr. Netanyahu said it was "high-time" for he [sic], Mr. Obama and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas to have direct talks on Mideast peace.

Mr. Obama said he hoped direct talks would begin before the moratorium on Jewish construction ends in September. >>> Jared A. Favole | Tuesday, July 06, 2010

>>> anr/dpa/ddp/apn | Montag, 07. Juli 2010

Juli 2010

THE TELEGRAPH: A 90-year-old former SS sergeant who was No 4 on the most wanted list of Nazi war criminals has died in Germany before his case came to trial.

Adolf Storms died at his home in the western city of Duisburg on June 28, according to German authorities.

Storms, who worked unnoticed for decades as a train-station manager, was charged by Brendel's office last November with 58 counts of murder for alleged involvement in a wartime massacre of Jewish forced labourers in Austria.

New Dark Age Alert! More Cr** from the Councils of the UK! Swimming Pool Blacked Out to Appease Muslims [Should Read: Dark Age Loons]

DAILY EXPRESS: TOWN hall chiefs were yesterday accused of “political correctness gone stark-raving mad” for forcing pool users to swim in the gloom to protect Muslim women’s modesty.

The bizarre council diktat is the latest example of bureaucrats taking an extreme decision to avoid upsetting a minority group.

Residents are outraged after council chiefs ordered the windows of their glass-panelled swimming pool to be blacked out after complaints were received from Muslim groups.

That has meant all swimmers at Darlaston Leisure Centre in Walsall, West Midlands, have been forced to swim in a darkened, gloomy pool.

The centre won plaudits from architects for its “ultra-modern” design when it opened to the public 10 years ago.

But now council staff have covered ground-level windows with opaque film at a cost of £1,400 following complaints, mainly from Muslims concerned that they might be spotted in their swimwear.

Regular users of the pool are furious that the tinted windows, installed a fortnight ago, have plunged the pool into gloom – and all in the name of political correctness.* >>> Padraic Flanagan | Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Return to the Scene of a Lynching

Iman Mansur and Doaa, the wife and daughter of Mohamed Msallem, an Egyptian lynched by Lebanese villagers, mourn at his funeral in Cairo. Photo: The Independent

THE INDEPENDENT: The killing of Mohamed Msallem shocked a nation. Two months on, Robert Fisk visited Ketermaya to find out what his death says about Lebanon

They didn't hang him from a tree," the police chief insisted to me. "They put a butcher's hook through his throat and hanged him from an electricity pole – that one, over there."

And sure enough, just opposite the clean little mosque of Ketermaya, stands the rusting pylon upon which Mohamed Msallem met his terrible end. His victims – two little girls and their grandparents – lie in their graves a few metres away, plastic flowers blessing the grey earth, not far from the tomb in which half their family were buried almost 30 years ago, among the 50 victims of an Israeli air attack.

Tragedy afflicts this little village. Conscience, too. Msallem was strung up by the people of Ketermaya, seized from the cops who had brought him back to the scene of the crime, stripped to his pants and then paraded through the streets to the taunts of the villagers, butchered by the peace-loving civilians who can still not believe what they did.

The lynching on 29 April shocked Lebanon. A country that has shrugged off its civil war – and is trying to ignore the next Hizbollah-Israeli conflict – is supposed to have reverted to tourism, Crusader castles and Roman ruins and fine restaurants. But Ketermaya is an awful reminder of the incendiary pain that exists beneath its soft landscape. >>> | Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Libya Eyes Stake in 'Bargain BP'

THE TELEGRAPH: Libya has expressed an interest in building a stake in BP, describing the oil company as a bargain following its Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Share[s] in BP rose 3.5pc to 333.3p in London, following weekend speculation that the company had been in contact with sovereign wealth funds about them buying stakes.

Shokri Ghanem, the chairman of Libya's National Oil Corporation, told a newswire that: "BP is interesting now with the price lower by half and I still have trust in BP. I will recommend it to the Libyan Investment Authority."

He later added: "I think that BP shares are good value for bargain hunters,"

BP denied that it was planning to issue any new equity, but a weighty shareholder buying up stock on the open market could still help provide a floor on the company's plummeting share price. It declined to comment on any talks with sovereign wealth funds.

The oil giant has lost half of its market value since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank on April 20, triggering a catastrophic leak. Qatar, Abu Dhabi and the Kuwait Investment Authority, which already holds 1.8pc of BP, have also been linked to the company as possible investors. >>> Rowena Mason | Monday, July 05, 2010

>>> Judith Duportail, LeMonde.fr | Lundi 05 Juillet 2010

Iran Issues Catalogue of 'Acceptable Male Hairstyles'

Both spiky hair and ponytails have not made the cut, however.

The pictures of mostly clean-shaven male models sporting short hair, some styled with gel, are contained in a "journal of Iranian hairstyles approved by the ministry of (culture and Islamic) guidance".

"The proposed styles are inspired by Iranians' complexion, culture and religion, and Islamic law," said Jaleh Khodayar, who is in charge of a Modesty and Veil Festival later this month where they are to be promoted.

"We are happy that the Islamic republic of Iran's government has backed us in designing these hairstyles," she said, adding that a catalogue of haircuts for men would soon be published. >>> | Monday, July 05, 2010

Iran Issues List of Approved Hairstyles for Men

MAIL ONLINE: Iran is set to order a crackdown on men sporting 'un-Islamic' haircuts.

Long hair and ponytails are definitely out this summer - though a dab of gel is acceptable, according to the country's morality police.

And a beard is no longer required as a symbol of political and religious correctness.

A photographic catalogue of permissible 'Islamic' hairstyles is to be published and promoted later this month at the 'Modesty and Veil Festival'.

Iran’s dour Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has given the project its vital seal of approval.

'The proposed styles are inspired by Iranians’ complexion, culture, religion and Islamic law,' said Jaleh Khodayar, the festival’s female organiser.

A tantalising foretaste of what is folically acceptable was provided by Iranian news agencies yesterday, which carried pictures of mostly clean-shaven male models sporting short hair.

Hardliners have frequently raged against youths with 'decadent Western cuts'.

But the red lines governing male grooming have never been clearly identified – until now.

Those aping the elaborate styles of some millionaire European football stars have been hauled off to police stations where their beloved locks have been unceremoniously and inexpertly shorn.

First-time offenders braving a close shave with the law get off with an unflattering short-back-and-sides.

But serial hair delinquents risk stiff fines, while barber shops catering to Western fashions have been shut. Continue reading and comment >>> Michael Theodoulou | Monday, July 05, 2010

Nick Clegg Unveils Election Reform Plans

THE TELEGRAPH: Sweeping reforms to parliamentary constituencies will be introduced alongside moves to change the voting system, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced today.

Previously the Government had mooted increasing the threshold from a simple majority to 55 per cent of MPs, Mr Clegg said.

The announcement will further antagonise opponents of the change - including Tory backbencher David Davis - who claim Parliament's ability to throw out a failing government is being compromised.

Mr Clegg also set out plans for the House of Commons to be reduced from 650 to 600 MPs after a review of boundaries, saving £12 million a year.

The Government's proposed boundary review, equalising the size of all but two constituencies, would be in place in time for its planned 2015 general election, he said.

Mr Clegg also confirmed that a referendum on replacing first-past-the-post Westminster elections with the Alternative Vote (AV) will be held on May 5 next year. >>> | Monday, July 05, 2010

Israël a déjà refusé

>>> AFP | Lundi 05 Juillet 2010

'Brits Behind Most UK Islam-Linked Terror'

SKY NEWS: The bulk of Islamism-related terror offences in the UK over the past decade involved British citizens with links to al Qaeda, according to a new report.

The Centre for Social Cohesion found that 69% of such incidents between 1999 and 2009 were carried out by home grown terrorists or would-be terrorists.

The research also suggested that seven of the UK's eight major bomb plot cells contained individuals with direct links to al Qaeda.

Only the failed London bombers of July 21, 2005, lacked undisputed evidence of direct contact with any proscribed organisation.

What the Butler Heard: Snobbery, Hypocrisy, Anti-Semitism and Greed

THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY: The recordings that expose the murky world of France's super-rich L'Oréal heiress could have come from the pen of Molière.

The following story could have been written by the 17th-century French playwright Molière. It is the tragi-comic tale of a deaf and confused 87-year-old heiress, surrounded by quarrelling and mutually detesting advisers and favourites who may or may not also be predators. The play could be entitled The Bewildered Billionairess. It's set not in the 17th century, however, but in the very recent past – between 25 May 2009 and 11 May 2010, to be precise.

The location is a mansion in Neuilly-sur-Seine, the wealthiest town in France, just outside Paris. The dialogue could equally come from a film script about the hidden world of greed/sliminess/snobbishness/ hypocrisy/anti-Semitism that sometimes lies below the fine old carpet of the Roman Catholic haute-bourgeoisie in France.

The extracts are, in fact, taken from the transcripts of real conversations secretly recorded by the old woman's former butler. The 100 hours of tapes have created a political scandal in France. They threaten to bring down a senior cabinet minister, Eric Woerth, and could deal a fatal blow to President Nicolas Sarkozy's already limping presidency. The tapes may become the principal exhibit in an explosive trial – which opened last week and then adjourned – and could also decide the future of the world's largest cosmetics company, L'Oréal.

Fury as Doctor Who Said Lockerbie Bomber Would Die In Three Months Admits: He Could Live for a Decade

MAIL ONLINE: The cancer expert who predicted the Lockerbie bomber would die within three months of his release from prison has admitted he could live for another ten years or more.

Professor Karol Sikora, who had diagnosed Abdelbaset Al Megrahi with terminal cancer, faced calls to apologise to victims' families last night.

Campaigners reacted with fury to the professor's comments, which they said raised new questions about the decision to allow Megrahi to return to his native Libya.

Tory MP Ben Wallace, a former member of the Scottish Affairs Committee, said: 'The doctor that carried out this diagnosis owes his regret to the families of the victims.

'He should apologise to the victims for contributing to the release of a mass murderer, who is clearly alive and well in Libya.

'Throughout this whole sorry affair the victim has been put last behind trade deals, Scotish Nationalist posturing and dubious medical diagnosis.' >>> Jack Doyle | Monday, July 05, 2010
Israel Will 'Never Apologise' for Flotilla Raid

THE TELEGRAPH: Israel will never say sorry for defending itself, a senior government official has said after Turkey demanded an apology for a deadly commando raid on an aid convoy to Gaza.

His remarks were made after Ahmet Davutoglu, the Turkish Foreign Minister, vowed Ankara would sever diplomatic ties with Israel unless it apologised over the operation which left nine people dead, all of them Turkish nationals.

Israeli officials reacted angrily to Turkey's threats.

"When you want want an apology, you don't use threats or ultimatums," said Yigal Palmor, foreign ministry spokesman.

"Everything leads us to believe that Turkey has another agenda in mind," he said, without giving further details.

"Israel will never apologise for defending its citizens," he said. >>> | Monday, July 05, 2010

Addressing supporters at his campaign headquarters, Jaroslaw Kaczynski congratulated Bronislaw Komorowski, a pro-business and liberal ally of the Polish government, after two exit polls gave his rival 53.1 and 51 per cent.

"I congratulate the winner. I congratulate Bronislaw Komorowski," said Mr Kaczynski, adding that "there will be other elections to fight" and that "we have to mobilise" for them.

A jubilant Mr Komorowski appeared confident that the results, due on Monday, will confirm him as president of Poland.

"This is a victory for Polish democracy," Mr Komorowski told cheering supporters at his headquarters. "The ballots are being counted. We're opening a small bottle of champagne today, and we'll open a big one tomorrow." >>> Matthew Day in Warsaw | Sunday, July 04, 2010

Embracing the Nanny State: Italy Considers Banning 80-Year-Old Drivers

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Italy is considering banning drivers over 80 years old from the roads in a bid to reduce accidents.

The proposal is based on the suggestion that octogenarians are less alert and more easily distracted than younger motorists.

Italy has one of the highest amount of road deaths per year in Europe with more than 5000 registered in 2009.

”We must look at setting an age limit for driving - once it is passed then a licence would be taken away,” said Mario Valducci, chairman of the Italian Parliament Transport Committee. ”It is still at the proposal stage and it would be either around 80 or 85 years old but it is something that is being seriously considered.”

Under current legislation in Italy driving licences must be renewed every ten years until 50, then every five years until 70 and then every three years.

Drivers have to provide medical certificates to verify they are in a good state of health but there is no full practical test to check their reactions. >>> Nick Pisa in Rome | Sunday, July 04, 2010

Is the BBC Losing Its Grip?

THE TELEGRAPH: With its stars being picked off by rival broadcasters and looming cuts to pay and pensions, the mood at the BBC is said to be 'sulphurous'. Neil Midgley looks at the tensions pulling it apart.

Saturday July 17 will see the end of an era at the BBC – and one that the corporation will be glad to forget. Just before 1pm, Jonathan Ross will hang up his Radio 2 headphones for good – his three-year, £18 million deal finally at an end. Ross became a totem of almost everything the BBC's critics say is wrong with it: his massive pay packet, his foul-mouthed style and, fatally, his infamous harassment, with Russell Brand, of the actor Andrew Sachs on Brand's Radio 2 show. His exit should be the opportunity for a golden new dawn at Television Centre in White City: with the page turned and lessons learned, the BBC could and should be ready to show itself not only leaner and meaner, but with higher editorial standards and a greater commitment to the public service broadcasting ideals for which it was founded in the days of John Reith.

Yet when Sir Michael Lyons, the chairman of the BBC Trust, stood up to give an agenda-setting speech at the Voice of the Listener and Viewer consumer group last week, he did not give a confident performance. Though he gathered headlines in the following day's papers with his demand for the BBC's top-earning on-screen stars to be publicly listed, he had in fact dithered over the text of the speech almost until he delivered it. He even added a crucial caveat – that individual presenters' salaries need not be disclosed – while he was on his feet. Often stumbling over his words, he looked and sounded weary and unsure.

Today, Sir Michael will be on his feet again, next to director-general Mark Thompson at the presentation of the BBC's annual report. One Tory MP recently described the pair – with some frustration, given Sir Michael's role as regulator of Thompson's output – as being "like Romulus and Remus, they appear everywhere as a double act". But tensions between those who run the BBC, led by Thompson, and the supervisory Trust, led by Sir Michael, have never been higher. According to one senior source, the executive and the trust are now in "almost open warfare", with the trust's most recent demands about "talent pay" disclosure only hardening the resentment felt at Television Centre towards the trust. The source added that if Sir Michael had gone further and asked for presenters' actual salaries to be disclosed, the pair might have publicly fallen out there and then. Thompson has since ruled out publishing the salary details of the BBC's stars. >>> Neil Midgley | Monday, July 05, 2010

>>> afp | Dimanche 04 Juillet 2010
UN Celebrates a 'Watershed Day' for Women

Some 65 years after it was founded, and after decades of reports on every species of sex discrimination and its wasteful effects, the United Nations has decided to set up a single, powerful body to promote equality for women around the world.

The General Assembly voted unanimously on Friday to launch a new agency called UN Women. It will begin its work in January, have a high-level leader, probably twice the $250m annual budget now allocated to gender issues, and will be tasked with challenging governments on women's plights and rights.

UN Women will press hard for women to have a more widespread and prominent role in politics, and also try to reduce some of the world's more glaring discriminations. These include lack of access to health and education, forced marriages, rape, female cicumcision, and trafficking. Diplomats at the Assembly greeted news of the new body with spontaneous applause as the decision was announced with a rap of its president's gavel. "This is truly a watershed day," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "Member states have created a much stronger voice for women and for gender equality at the global level. It will now be much more difficult for the world to ignore the challenges facing women and girls or to fail to take the necessary action." >>> Nina Lakhani and David Randall | Sunday, July 04, 2010

Shahram Amiri disappeared in Saudi Arabia while on pilgrimage to the Muslim holy city of Medina.

Since then a series of videos have apparently shown Amiri make and retract claims he was drugged and flown to America against his will.

Tehran said it has evidence that he is being held against his will in the United States.

The country's foreign ministry yesterday said it had submitted its evidence to the Swiss embassy, which looks after American interests in the absence of diplomatic relations.

Neither Switzerland nor the United States has made any comment on the case.

Mr Amiri was a nuclear researcher at Tehran's Malek Ashtar University and also worked for the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation.

The Iranian government declared he had been kidnapped by the CIA with Saudi connivance. >>> Richard Spencer in Dubai | Sunday, July 04, 2010

Pregnant Women Fasting for Ramadan Risk Damage to Their Babies

NEW ZEALAND HERALD: Pregnant Muslim women who fast during Ramadan are likely to have smaller babies who will be more prone to learning disabilities in adulthood, according to new research.

Scientists in the United States also found that the women were 10 per cent less likely to give birth to a boy if they had fasted during Ramadan.

The trend was clearest if the fasting was done early in the women's pregnancy, and during the summer months, when long hours of daylight called for them to go longer without food. >>> Sarah Cassidy and Jerome Taylor | Friday, June 25, 2010

Haushaltskrise: Wo Obama irrt

Sparen oder mehr Geld ausgeben? US-Präsident Barack Obama und Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel. Foto: Zeit Online

Ja. Le mystère Van Rompuy

Le président du Conseil, Herman Van Rompuy. Photo : leJDD.fr
