Maternity Units Refuse to Tell Parents the Sex of Unborn Babies

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: NHS maternity units are refusing to tell expectant parents the gender of their unborn baby, an investigation has found.

The hospitals say they are too short-staffed to establish the sex of the foetus during ante-natal screening.

But some medical groups believe the NHS policies are being driven by fears that females could be selectively aborted among cultures which value boys more highly.

There is also concern that it is driven by people threatening to sue over being told the wrong gender of child.

The Council of Europe is due to consider a draft resolution in October which recommends that all its 47 member states - including Britain - instruct hospitals to "withold [sic] information about the sex of the foetus" from parents.

The move is a bid to prevent the practice of selective abortion, which they say has reached worrying proportions in some former Soviet states.

The plans have triggered alarm in this country, where pregnant women who want to know if they are due a boy or a girl expect to find out, usually during 20 week scans to check for abnormalities, and sometimes at 12 weeks.

Now, a survey of maternity units in England discloses that several are already refusing to share the information. » | Laura Donnelly and Will Taylor | Sunday, September 25, 2011

» | Laure Costey | Jeudi 26 Mai 2011

Carla Bruni 'Pregnant with Twins'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Carla Bruni is pregnant with twins at the age of 43, according to the latest reports.

The former supermodel has been at the centre of frenzied media speculation this week that she is expecting her first child with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Now glossy showbiz magazine Voici claims that she is expecting twins in October.

The claims come after Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy – who is also said to have given up smoking – herself hinted she and her 56-year-old husband were expecting a baby.

When asked directly if she was pregnant in an interview on Monday, she replied teasingly that she would "remain tight-lipped about that to protect something".

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was asked by one of six readers of Le Parisien newspaper invited to the Elysee [sic] Palace to interview her: "Are you expecting a baby?"

She answered: "If you'll allow me, I'd rather not answer these questions about my family. » | Tuesday, May 03, 2011

Pregnant Women Fasting for Ramadan Risk Damage to Their Babies

NEW ZEALAND HERALD: Pregnant Muslim women who fast during Ramadan are likely to have smaller babies who will be more prone to learning disabilities in adulthood, according to new research.

Scientists in the United States also found that the women were 10 per cent less likely to give birth to a boy if they had fasted during Ramadan.

The trend was clearest if the fasting was done early in the women's pregnancy, and during the summer months, when long hours of daylight called for them to go longer without food. >>> Sarah Cassidy and Jerome Taylor | Friday, June 25, 2010

Prophet Muhammad Couldn’t Have Known about the Therapeutic Effects of Pork

MAIL ONLINE: The traditional English breakfast is not normally associated with good health.

But scientists have found that eating a plate of bacon and eggs could help pregnant women boost the intelligence of their unborn child.

Women are usually given a list of foods to avoid during pregnancy and it is well documented that a pregnant woman's diet can affect her unborn baby.

But the new study suggests that a chemical in pork products and eggs can help the baby's growing brain to develop. Bacon and eggs could help pregnant women boost their baby's intelligence >>> Anny Shaw | Wednesday, January 06, 2010
