Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has thrown her support behind her husband Nicolas Sarkozy's comeback plan, saying it would be good for France if he ran for the presidency in 2017.

The 46-year old supermodel-turned-singer who married Mr Sarkozy in 2008 told a US chat show host that while she was not personally keen on him returning to frontline politics, she would support him if that was his wish.

"I want him to be happy and I care about my country," she told Ellen DeGeneres, the talk-show host.

Looking slightly embarrassed, as Mr Sarkozy was in the audience, she added: "As a woman I wish he wasn't going back. But as a French citizen, yes. He never stops me doing anything I like. He just encourages me. So I don't see myself saying 'don't do it'." As Bruni resumed her stage career with a sell-out concert in Paris, Mr Sarkozy, who has kept France guessing about whether he plans another run at the presidency, was greeted with rapturous applause and chants of "Nicolas, Nicolas!" when he slipped into a back row seat next to the sound engineer at the Casino de Paris on Saturday night.

Once it seemed that Nicolas Sarkozy's public love-life sagas were hard to top: his marriage breakdown with Cécilia, her role as his political adviser, their ill-fated bling-encrusted presidential victory celebrations at the posh Fouquet's restaurant and on a billionaire's yacht. Then his reluctant, quickie divorce and speedy re-marriage to the supermodel Carla Bruni barely four months after meeting her. All this churned the stomachs of French voters and sent his popularity plunging to a nadir from which it never recovered.

But the Socialist François Hollande is now at the centre of a rival plotline. He had promised to be the anti-Sarkozy, a sober "Mr Normal" who was prudish about relationship matters and vowed that never again would France see such an outrageous mixing of public and private life.

French media describe a dangerous love-life "psychodrama", in which the once-nerdy Socialist president is "sandwiched" between two jealous women from his present and past – a "dysfunctional trio" at the highest levels of the French state, said the leftwing Libération. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is to start singing live again and will release a new album of songs in the autumn, her promoter confirmed on Tuesday.

There are even rumours of France's outgoing first lady starring in a new biopic about her family history.

News of the 44-year-old's desire to revive her showbusiness career came after her husband, Nicolas Sarkozy, announced his retirement from politics.

The 57-year-old suffered a humiliating electoral defeat on Sunday night, meaning that he became the first French head of state to be rejected after just one term for 31 years.

Sarkozy is facing an uncertain future – his poor English means he is unlikely to be able to make money on the lucrative US lecture circuit, and he has ruled out any return to politics.

Veronique Rampazza, spokeswoman for Sarkozy's wife, said: "Carla did not put her career on hold during Nicolas Sarkozy's five years in office. She continues to compose.

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has lashed out at Paris Match for publishing photos of the French First Lady with her baby girl Giulia on front page without her or husband Nicolas' consent.

The magazine published the image, taken by the paparazzi and showing the 43-year-old as she walked her daughter to the paediatrician, on its front page. The child's features were airbrushed out.

"I would like to specify that the picture was taken without my consent and I deplore the use of the image of my children just like any aspect of their private life," Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy said on her website.

She did not say whether she would be filing a legal complaint.

Happy to play an increasingly prominent role in her husband's tough presidential re-election campaign, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy has made it plain that she wishes to keep her five-month old daughter – the first to child to be born to a French president while in office - firmly out of the public spotlight.

In an interview shortly before her daughter's birth, she warned: "I will do everything to protect this infant and I'll be absolutely rigorous. I will never show photos of this child, I will never expose this child. I think exposure to public life is a choice to be made by an adult."

This is the second Sarkozy child to receive unwanted media attention in a week. Statue of Carla Bruni Sarkozy as a Worker Angers France

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: A French mayor's plan to erect a statue of President Nicolas Sarkozy's wife Carla Bruni in worker's attire has angered the opposition and embarrassed the first lady.

Jacques Martin, the mayor of Nogent-sur-Marne to the east of Paris and member of Mr Sarkozy's UMP party, commissioned the statue to honour the mostly Italian immigrant women who used to work at a feather factory in the town.

But when French daily Le Parisien on Sunday revealed the plan for the statue more than six-and-a-half feet tall, at a cost of over 80,000 euros (£67,000), the opposition and even the first lady's friends were up in arms.

A source close to Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy said she agreed to model for sculptor Elisabeth Cibot as she admires her work, but that "it was never suggested that her name would appear".
Modelling "is her former job, she no longer does it commercially, but she's often asked to do it, and she often agrees, and always without being paid," the source said.

Dans un article intitulé «Enquête sur la philanthrope Carla Bruni-Sarkozy»,l’hebdomadaire daté du 7 au 13 janvier affirme notamment que, «au mépris des procédures normales», le Fonds mondial contre le Sida a versé 3,5 millions de dollars (2,7 millions d’euros) «en faveur des activités philanthropiques de Carla Bruni-Sarkozy et de plusieurs agences appartenant à l’un de ses amis proches».

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, her husband Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, and Giulia went for a stroll on the grounds of the presidential residence – 'La Lanterne' park in Versailles.

French photographers caught a brief glimpse of Giulia in October when her former-supermodel mother whisked her away from the Muette Clinic in Paris where she gave birth.

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: Cradled by her former-supermodel mother and surrounded by bodyguards, the most famous baby in France made her first public appearance today.

Giulia, the four-day-old daughter of Carla Bruni and President Nicolas Sarkozy, appeared on the steps of the Muette Clinic in Paris, where she was born last Wednesday.

Wrapped in a dark blue baby wrap, Guilia was carried down some steps to a waiting limousine with blacked-out windows, and then driven to her multi-millionaire family's town house a few streets away in the city's exclusive 16th arrondissement.

But, despite the kind of celebrity attention which both her mother has grown used to, there was no question of Giulia showing her face to the world.

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has confirmed the name of her daughter as Giulia.

In a message on her website, she wrote: "I am deeply touched by the many messages of congratulations that I have received since the birth of our daughter Giulia.

"On this happy occasion, my husband joins me in expressing our warmest thanks to all those of you who sent us these tokens of your kindness."

Earlier her husband Nicolas Sarkozy spoke of his "very profound joy" at the birth of his daughter, as his "father of the nation" appeal is expected to give him a much needed poll boost.

The French president and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy decided not to announce the baby's arrival officially, but Mr Sarkozy reacted warmly when waste-processing plant workers gave him gifts during a visit to the western Mayenne region and confirmed he will take no paternity leave.

"They're doing really well," he told employees. "We are lucky … All parents here can understand our very profound joy, a joy all the deeper because it is private".

With no official confirmation on the name, Le Figaro said it believed the couple had plumped for either Giulia – the spelling in Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy's native Italy – or Julia, in a nod to Mr Sarkozy's Hungarian roots.
