Will Camilla finally win a place in the hearts of the British people? Or will this newest 'Royal' merely inflict further controversy on an already-troubled institution? This revealing documentary examines the past, present and future of a royal romance which has survived against all odds. But what will that future bring for King, Queen, and country?

Russia's War on Ukraine Is 'Against Everything We Stand For', Says Mark Rutte - BBC News

May 4, 2023 | Russia's war on Ukraine goes "against everything we stand for", Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said. Ukraine's President Zelensky has been speaking at The Hague and called for the establishment of a war tribunal to hold Russia to account for alleged war crimes. The Dutch prime minister made the comments during a press conference with Zelensky and Belgian PM Alexander de Croo. President Zelensky also called for a decision from Western allies on the provision of modern aircrafts to Ukraine. He said there is "no rational reason" to postpone doing so.

Hungary’s Far-right PM Calls for Trump’s Return: ‘Come Back, Mr President’

THE GUARDIAN: Viktor Orbán, addressing European CPAC summit, attacks liberalism as a ‘virus’ and says his country is model for world

The Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán has called for Donald Trump’s return to office, claiming their shared brand of hard-right populism is on the rise around the world, in a speech to US Republicans and their European allies in Budapest.

Orbán was addressing the second annual meeting of the US Conservative Political Action Coalition (CPAC) in the Hungarian capital, aimed at cementing radical rightwing ties across the Atlantic. He said that conservatives have “occupied big European sanctuaries”, which he listed as Budapest, Warsaw, Rome and Jerusalem. He added that Vienna “is also not hopeless” .

He noted that Washington and Brussels were still in the grip of liberalism, which he described as a “virus that will atomize and disintegrate our nations”. » | Flora Garamvolgyi in Budapest | Thursday, May 4, 2023

A Look at the British Monarchy's Popularity ahead of King Charles' Coronation

May 4, 2023 | The new king inherited the crown at a time when support for the monarchy was as low as it had ever been—a decline that has been accelerated in part by the downfall of Charles’s brother Prince Andrew over sexual assault allegations stemming from his friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as by the damaging revelations made in Prince Harry’s unsparing memoir, Spare.

Defender of All Faiths? Coronation Puts Focus on King Charles’s Beliefs

THE GUARDIAN: The crowning ceremony will be a deeply Christian affair. Will it be at odds with king’s desire to reflect UK’s religious diversity?

King Charles III with the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who said the coronation was ‘first and foremost an act of Christian worship’. Photograph: Aaron Chown/PA

In 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, the UK was predominantly Christian, with Sunday church attendance the norm, children taught to say their prayers at bedtime and vicars regarded with unquestioning deference.

Opinion polls in the 1950s and 1960s asking people to name their religion found that between 86% and 91% gave a Christian denomination.

Seventy years on, as King Charles III prepares for his coronation on 6 May, the picture is rather different. The 2021 census found that for the first time, a minority of people in England and Wales described themselves as Christian, with those saying they had no religion gaining ground. Attendance at Sunday services at Anglican churches in England hit an all-time low (bar the pandemic year of 2020) in 2021, at 509,000 people, or less than 1% of the population. » | Harriet Sherwood | Thursday, May 4, 2023

King Charles III Takes the Throne

May 4, 2023 | On May 6th, King Charles will become the oldest person to ascend the throne of the United Kingdom. He is a bit of an odd duck to be the king, Rebecca Mead thinks. Charles has “long made clear that he considers his birthright a burden,” she writes. In fact, many things are a burden: during the ceremonies following the death of Queen Elizabeth, the new king “got into not one but two altercations with malfunctioning pens. . . . As his biographer Catherine Mayer puts it, ‘The world is against him—even inanimate objects are against him. That is absolutely central to his personality.’ ” Mead—a subject of the king, as well as a staff writer—talks with David Remnick about Charles III’s coronation, the problem of Harry and Meghan, and the future of the British monarchy itself.

Russia Blames US for Alleged Kremlin Drone Attack - BBC News

May 4, 2023 | Russia has accused the United States of being behind an overnight drone attack on the Kremlin that it claims intended to kill Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that "decisions on such attacks are not made in Kyiv, but in Washington". Peskov did not provide any evidence to back up the claims, but he said that an urgent investigation was under way. Yesterday, US officials said the White House had no warning of a drone attack on the Kremlin. Ukraine has also denied responsibility for the attack.

König Charles II: Kann er die Monarchie erneuern? | ARTE Re:

The Coronation of King Charles: Everything You Need to Know

May 3, 2023 | The coronation of King Charles III is coming up on 6 May. Charles is trying to strike a balance between tradition and modernity. Although the coronation process has remained unchanged for 1000 years, King Charles is planning some changes. For example, fewer guests will be invited and male guests are to appear in suits rather than pompous coronation robes. The invitation also refers to the coronation of "Queen Camilla", which is unusual for a monarch's wife, as the correct name would be "Queen Consort". At the ceremony in Westminster Abbey, Charles will accept the traditional St. Edward's Crown. After the coronation, the royals will make a traditional appearance at Buckingham Palace. It is already clear that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not be present on the balcony.

Gove and Hunt, Beware: True-blue Surrey Is Ready to Turf Out the Tories – and You’re Next

THE GUARDIAN: An avalanche is coming. The voters I met are abandoning the Conservatives over lying, cheating and Brexit

“Were you still awake for Raab? Or Hunt? Or Gove?” On the morning after next year’s election we may be asking each other that, remembering the magic early-hours moment in 1997 when Michael Portillo lost his seat in Enfield Southgate, north London, symbolising the earthquake that brought down the Tories after 18 long years. Imagine the shock of Tory A-listers’ seats tumbling in the forever Tory fiefdoms of Surrey.

I had never imagined it, so what I discovered while canvassing with the Liberal Democrats last weekend in Michael Gove’s Surrey Heath constituency was terra incognita to me. Evan Smith | From Stake Presidency to LGBTQ+ Ally and Beyond | Reupload

Oct 4, 2022 | Evan Smith met the intersection of sexuality and religion while serving as an LDS Bishop and eventually in a Stake Presidency. It didn’t take long before Evan began to better understand the difficult and impossible restraints the Church’s policies and doctrines place on LGBTQ Mormons.

In the midst of these dichotomies, Evan, and his wife Cheryl, learned that their own son, Weston, was gay.

The Smiths learned that understanding and advocating for LGBTQ people takes a sharp turn when someone close to you is directly impacted by this topic. As a result, Evan and Cheryl became allies and advocates for queer Mormons, and Evan used his position in his Stake Presidency to directly discuss this topic with General Authorities and Latter-day Saint congregations.

In this episode, Evan candidly shares his discussions with Church leadership, what his family has learned having a gay son, his current membership status in the Mormon church, and what we can all do to better understand the LGBTQ experience.

Evan Smith is also the author of Gay Latter-day Saint Crossroads, a book he acknowledges was written to explain, and hopefully do something productive with the pain that comes from the church’s teachings about sexual orientation and gender identity. The book also explores whether the church’s current position on gay sexual behavior is more reflective of human prejudice than it is of divine truth. Evan also uses the book to try to make amends for any harm he caused in the past as a leader in the church.

Many in U.K. Greet King Charles’s Coronation With a ‘Take It or Leave It’ Shrug

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Images of the new king may be blanketing Britain, but many in the country are more focused on navigating a cost-of-living crisis than celebrating a dysfunctional royal family.

King Charles III and the queen consort, Camilla, attending a ceremony on Thursday at Buckingham Palace in London. | Pool photo by Stefan Rousseau

When King Charles III is crowned on Saturday, he will undergo a ritual so rare in modern British history that it last occurred 70 years ago, roughly the wait between sightings of Halley’s comet. And yet the coronation has yet to capture the imagination of a Britain preoccupied by other concerns.

Images of the new king — in chocolate, in Legos and in wax — are popping up in bakeries, toy stores and at Madame Tussauds wax museum. Ancient relics of coronation, like the Scottish stone of destiny, are being delivered to Westminster Abbey for the ceremony. Charles and his queen consort, Camilla, are rehearsing every step of the service in a specially staged room at Buckingham Palace.

But in a recent poll of 3,070 adults in Britain by the market research firm YouGov, 64 percent of respondents said they had little or no interest in the coronation. Only a third said they were strongly or fairly interested in it. Among those aged 18 to 24, the number voicing little or no interest rose to 75 percent. » | Mark Landler, Reporting from London | Sunday, April 30, 2023

Vulnerable UK Women Forced into ‘Sex for Rent’ by Cost of Living Crisis

THE OBSERVER: Some women are turning to escort work to meet basic housing costs, charities warn

Women are increasingly being forced to engage in “survival sex” because of the cost of living crisis amid worsening conditions for Britain’s most vulnerable.

Charities warn rising costs paired with years of underfunding mean women, including those with trauma and mental health issues, are having to turn to sex in exchange for housing or to meet other basic needs.

Sex for rent – when landlords demand sex in return for discounted or free accommodation – is a growing problem as economic conditions tighten, they said, with perpetrators using it as a tool to abuse and control.

It is particularly an issue among migrant women and asylum seekers, the Observer understands. The crisis is also making it harder for those trying to leave abusive relationships. » | Miranda Bryant | Saturday, April 29, 2023

Is Iran's Government behind the Mysterious Poisonings of Schoolgirls? | DW News

Apr 28, 2023 | Families in Iran are accusing the authorities of failing to stop a months-long series of poison attacks on schoolgirls. More than 13,000 cases of gas poisoning have been registered. Amnesty International says the attacks have targeted 300 girls' schools. Some government critics believe the poisonings are retaliation for last autumn's nationwide anti-regime demonstrations. But it's not clear who is responsible. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayotollah Ali Khamenei has described the poisonings as an 'unforgivable crime'. We talk to Negin Shiraghaei in London. She is an Iranian-British activist and women's rights campaigner.

Capitalism Hits Home: BRICS & The End of US Dominance

Apr 27, 2023 | n this episode of Capitalism Hits Home, Dr. Fraad discusses the decline of the American empire, both globally and domestically. After WWII, the US was the only industrialized nation that stood strong, helping it ascend to global dominance. Today, however, the world order is shifting. The BRICS economic alliance (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) is extremely powerful and widespread, with over 19 more countries hoping to join the alliance. The US dollar is losing its primacy and our country is steeped in debt. Internally, poverty is ever-increasing, corruption is normalized in our politics, and our wealthiest individuals and corporations don’t pay taxes. How did we get here? What can be done? Dr. Fraad tackles these questions and more.

Spain Braced for Record April Temperature of 39C as Extreme Heat Causes Misery

THE GUARDIAN: Government warns people to take precautions amid drought and heat 7C-11C above average for time of year

The Spanish government has advised people to take extra care as the drought-stricken country experiences record-breaking temperatures that could result in an unprecedented April temperature of 39C (102F) in parts of Andalucía on Friday.

This week’s abnormally high spring temperatures – caused as a mass of very hot air from north Africa travels across the Iberian peninsula and the Balearic islands – have already led the regional government of Madrid to approve a plan to help hospitals, health centres and schools cope, and to order the opening of public swimming pools a month earlier than usual.

In Seville, where temperatures were expected to hit 36C on Thursday, police were trying to establish whether a horse pulling a carriage of tourists had died of heatstroke. » | Sam Jones in Madrid | Thursday, April 27, 2023

Tucker Carlson Breaks Silence after Abrupt Departure from Fox News

THE GUARDIAN: Former Fox star did not address his reported firing but offered sweeping complaints about the state of American discourse

Tucker Carlson has broken his silence for the first time since his abrupt departure from Fox News, posting a video to Twitter that did not directly address his reported firing.

Carlson was one of the network’s biggest stars, and gained a large following while spouting xenophobic and racist rhetoric on his show, Tucker Carlson Tonight. He left Fox News without explanation on Monday. News outlets have reported that Carlson was fired on the personal order of Fox owner Rupert Murdoch for, among other things, using vulgar language to describe a female executive.

On Wednesday, Carlson shared a cryptic two-minute video on his Twitter account that did not explain his exit, but offered sweeping complaints about the state of American discourse. He said what he noticed “when you step away from the noise for a few days,” is how nice some people are. (With video) » | Kari Paul and agencies | Thursday, April 27, 2023

Keto diets can help you get rid of that "maddening middle" by keeping your carb intake very low -- because excess carbs turn into fat. You also need to be careful with the fats & oils you add to your food. If you're struggling to lose stubborn fat even on a keto diet, cut back on butter, oil, mayonnaise, and other added fats. Overdoing these is one of the most common reasons for people not losing weight, even if they're in ketosis.

They Wrecked Britain, and They’re Not Going Anywhere

OPINION : GUEST ESSAY

THE NEW YORK TIMES: LONDON — As Britain prepares for the coronation of its new king, an end-of-days feeling is sweeping the nation. In an atmosphere of social unrest, economic dysfunction and government corruption, deep political disillusionment has set in. The Conservative Party is polling 15 points behind the opposition, and the popularity of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the Conservatives’ fifth leader in seven years, remains obstinately low. After years of Tory misrule, the opinion of the British public seems clear: We’ve had enough.

And with good reason. For over a decade, the Conservatives have ransacked the country they claim to love, unmooring it from its foundations and enriching their chums. While the wealth of the very richest rocketed, the party’s program of austerity, begun by David Cameron in 2010 and continued by each Conservative prime minister since, starved public services, created one of the most miserly welfare states in the developed world and contributed to the longest period of wage stagnation — for many, wage regression — since the Napoleonic Wars. Life expectancy is down, child poverty is up, and there are few signs of a reprieve on the horizon. Life under the Tories has become poorer, nastier, more brutish and shorter. » | Samuel Earle | Thursday, April 27, 2023
