THE TELEGRAPH: Levelling-Up Secretary to scrap Brussels’ so-called ‘nutrient neutrality’ regulation, which is designed to limit harmful chemicals in rivers
Restrictive EU environment rules will be scrapped to enable 100,000 more homes to be built by 2030, Michael Gove has announced.
The Levelling-Up Secretary will scrap so-called “nutrient neutrality” rules imposed by Brussels, which the Government blames for blocking the provision of new homes, even where planning permission is granted.
The rules are designed to limit the amount of harmful chemicals that make their way into rivers, affecting wildlife. » | Daniel Martin, Deputy Political Editor | Tuesday, August 29, 2023

Gove and Hunt, Beware: True-blue Surrey Is Ready to Turf Out the Tories – and You’re Next
THE GUARDIAN: An avalanche is coming. The voters I met are abandoning the Conservatives over lying, cheating and Brexit
“Were you still awake for Raab? Or Hunt? Or Gove?” On the morning after next year’s election we may be asking each other that, remembering the magic early-hours moment in 1997 when Michael Portillo lost his seat in Enfield Southgate, north London, symbolising the earthquake that brought down the Tories after 18 long years. Imagine the shock of Tory A-listers’ seats tumbling in the forever Tory fiefdoms of Surrey.
I had never imagined it, so what I discovered while canvassing with the Liberal Democrats last weekend in Michael Gove’s Surrey Heath constituency was terra incognita to me. Before, there was no point in following the fortunes of forlorn opposition candidates trying to knock down impenetrable home-county blue walls. There is now. » | Polly Toynbee | Tuesday, May 2, 2023

‘Johnson Is a Liar Who Only Backed Leave to Help His Career’ – David Cameron
Boris Johnson is a liar who only backed the Leave campaign to help his career and Michael Gove was a “foam-flecked Faragist” whose “one quality” was disloyalty, David Cameron writes in his memoirs.
The former prime minister poured vituperation on both his former colleagues Priti Patel, the current home secretary, and Dominic Cummings, the No 10 adviser, in extracts from the book published on Sunday.
In what may be Cameron’s most explosive allegation yet, he effectively accused Boris Johnson of mounting a racist election campaign by focusing on Turkey and its possible accession to the EU.
“It didn’t take long to figure out Leave’s obsession,” he writes. “Why focus on a country that wasn’t an EU member?
“The answer was that it was a Muslim country, which piqued fears about Islamism, mass migration and the transformation of communities. It was blatant.” » | Michael Savage and Emma Graham-Harrison | Sunday, September 15, 2019

UK Ditches Plan to Bid for £5.9m Saudi Arabia Prisons Contract
Downing Street has announced that the government is to cancel a £5.9m contract to provide a training programme for prisons in Saudi Arabia.
In a significant victory for the justice secretary, Michael Gove – whose attempts to cancel the project had been resisted by David Cameron and the foreign secretary, Philip Hammond – the prime minister’s spokeswoman said the contract has been cancelled following a review.
The spokeswoman said: “This bid to provide the additional training to Saudi Arabia has been reviewed and the government has decided that it won’t be proceeding with the bid. The review has been ongoing following the decision that was announced earlier in September to close down the Just Solutions International branch of the Ministry of Justice that was providing some of these services.”
In another significant development, Downing Street also announced that the prime minister is to write to the Saudi authorities to raise his concerns about the case of Karl Andree, the 74-year-old grandfather who is due to face 360 lashes for transporting homemade wine in his car.
The No 10 spokeswoman said: “This is an extremely concerning case. We have been providing consular assistance to Mr Andree and to his family since he was first arrested. We have raised the case repeatedly in recent weeks. » | Nicholas Watt and Alan Travis | Tuesday, October 13, 2015

Michael Gove Accused of Using ‘Trojan Horse’ Row to Push Anti-Islam Agenda
THE INDEPENDENT: Michael Gove has been accused of cynically using the “Trojan Horse” schools row to push an ideological anti-Islamic agenda within the Government.
Whitehall sources revealed that behind the scenes the Education Secretary has been pressing David Cameron for months to widen the Government’s definition of Muslim “extremism”.
And they suggested that he has used allegations of a plot to “take over” a number of schools in Birmingham to press the Prime Minister to agree tough new measures to secularise schools in Muslim areas.
One said: “Michael Gove’s views are so incredibly black and white. It’s either his way or no way. He seems to think that anybody who strictly follows Islam is not really integrated.
“And he thinks anybody who holds conservative Muslim views is a bit of an extremist. He has been using Birmingham to pursue an ideological agenda that he’s had for many years.”
Mr Gove’s stance is understood to have caused unease among cabinet colleagues including the Home Secretary Theresa May and the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles. » | Richard Garner and Oliver Wright | Wednesday, June 04, 2014

Cameron Steps Into Extremism Row
BBC: David Cameron has asked for a full account of the row between the home secretary and education secretary over allegations of extremism in schools.
Theresa May has accused Michael Gove of not dealing with the alleged Islamist plot targeting Birmingham schools.
It is understood Mr Gove believes the Home Office does not react strongly enough to extremism generally.
Earlier, the pair issued a joint statement insisting they were "working together" on the issue.
The BBC's political editor, Nick Robinson, said the row amounted to "an old-fashioned Whitehall turf war", with two senior ministers differing over how to combat Islamic extremism. » | Wednesday, June 04, 2014

Conservatives Stuck on Stupid! We Should Celebrate That We Are a Multi-cultural Nation, Says Michael Gove
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Britons should celebrate the fact that their country is a “multi-cultural nation”, senior Conservatives have said.
Britons should celebrate the fact that their country is a “multi-cultural nation”, senior Conservatives have said.
The comments have emerged after new research said that the Tories had to do more to attract black and ethnic minority voters if they wanted to win next year’s general election.
The description multi-cultural is often used by rightwing critics to criticise community groups who do not mix with their neighbours.
However, Michael Gove, the Education secretary and a Tory moderniser, issued the call for the Conservatives to reclaim the term at the Asian Business Awards dinner earlier this month.
He told the 500-strong black tie dinner at a hotel in central London earlier this month that Britain was a “stronger country” because of its history of immigration. » | Christopher Hope, Senior Political Correspondent | Monday, April 28, 2014

BBC Whitewash? Trojan Horse: 25 Schools Probed Over Alleged Takeover Plot
BBC: An investigation into an alleged hard-line Islamist takeover plot of Birmingham schools has widened, with 25 schools now under the spotlight.
Birmingham City Council said it had received more than 200 reports in relation to its inquiry.
It has appointed former head teacher Ian Kershaw as its chief advisor.
Anonymous claims hard-line Muslims were trying to take over the running of some city schools were made in a letter sent to local authorities last year.
The 25 schools now being looked at include primaries, secondaries and academies.

More Schools to Be Investigated over 'Extremist Muslim' Plot Fears
The number of schools to be investigated over fears children are being “radicalised” by extremist Muslims attempting to seize control of institutions has increased to 25.
Teams of inspectors are to be sent into schools and will be able to penalise those where religious conservatism is believed to be getting in the way of teaching.
The Department for Education (DfE) launched the investigation after an alleged Islamic takeover plot to force out governors and head teachers was reported in Birmingham.
An anonymous letter claiming responsibility for changes in leadership at four schools in the city says it was part of a campaign called Operation Trojan Horse. The letter set out a blueprint for seizing control of schools and claimed a radical group of Muslims were pursuing their own agenda in classrooms and forcing out head teachers and governors who refused to cooperate. My comment:
The politicians/authorities are up their necks in trouble, all caused by mass immigration. Serves them right! Trouble is that we, the people, have to suffer for their foul up. If ever we were in need of a change of narrative, we are today. Change it now! Islam is not a 'religion of peace' but a religion which brings with it only trouble and strife. Can't the fools look around them and observe? In each and every country where Islam is strong, there is trouble and strife. Yet these fools keep on with the narrative of Islam being a 'religion of peace'. – © Mark

Gove Attacks 'Preposterous' Number of Old Etonians in Cameron's Cabinet
THE GUARDIAN: Education secretary draws comparisons between PM's team and cabinet of Lord Salisbury, criticised for alleged cronyism
The education secretary, Michael Gove, has attacked the "preposterous" number of Etonians in David Cameron's inner cabinet and, in the process, taken aim at the chances of Old Etonian Boris Johnson succeeding Cameron as party leader after the general election.
He described the concentration of Old Etonians as "ridiculous", adding that such a bastion of privilege does not exist in any other rich country.
Although Gove, in an interview with the Financial Times, stressed that the elite nature of Cameron's top team reflected the failings of past state education policies, the remarks fit perfectly with the Labour claim that the top of the Conservative party is an out-of-touch elite. » | Patrick Wintour | Friday, March 14, 2014

Michael Gove: Governments Must Stop Lying to Children about Life Chances
THE GUARDIAN: Education secretary says 'inflated' GCSE figures were used in past to tell pupils they could go to university or get skilled work
The education secretary, Michael Gove, has urged politicians to stop "lying to children" about their life chances and allowing inflated exam grades that he compared to Soviet tractor production propaganda.
"For years, ministers in previous governments looked at the way more and more people were getting GCSEs and they congratulated themselves, like Soviet economics ministers on the growth in statistics," Gove a US summit on education reform on Thursday night.
Slipping into a mock Russian accent and syntax, Gove said: "Look in Russia, thousands more get GCSEs. Surely now we are education powerhouse?"
Instead, he told the audience in Boston, "the truth is that we were lying to children" by telling them they would be able to go to university or find skilled work.
"Employers said: 'You have a piece of paper that says it, you're qualified in English and mathematics. But you can't write a business letter, you can't do basic arithmetic required to work in this store or on this shop floor.' » | Richard Adams, education editor, in Boston | Friday, October 18, 2013

MAIL ONLINE: The Prime Minister will send every school in Britain a copy of the King James Bible – complete with a foreword by the Education Secretary Michael Gove.
Mr Gove said the Bible was the most ‘important book written in the English language’ and had major cultural and historical significance.
But the move is highly controversial with non-religious groups condemning it as an unacceptable waste of public money.
Critics also mocked the project on Twitter with former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott describing it as Mr Gove’s ‘vanity project’.
The Department for Education confirmed that the Bibles will be sent out to over 20,000 schools to mark the 400th anniversary of it[s] translation.
Supporters said the book will help school pupils of all faiths to take pride in the history and culture of Britain.
Government ministers have always been careful to avoid controversies surrounding religion with Tony Blair’s former communications chief Alastair Campbell famously once declaring: ‘We don’t do God’.
But Mr Gove said: ‘It‘s a thing of beauty, and it‘s also an incredibly important historical artefact. It has helped shape and define the English language and is one of the keystones of our shared culture. And it is a work that has had international significance’. THE GUARDIAN: Education secretary outlines plans ahead of Tory conference, including extension of school day and tougher truancy fines
The education secretary, Michael Gove, has proposed that every child aged five or over should be learning a foreign language, and promised to "pull every lever", including encouraging longer school days, to make it happen.
In a pre-Conservative conference interview, he says: "There is a slam-dunk case for extending foreign language teaching to children aged five.
"Just as some people have taken a perverse pride in not understanding mathematics, so we have taken a perverse pride in the fact that we do not speak foreign languages, and we just need to speak louder in English. It is literally the case that learning languages makes you smarter. The neural networks in the brain strengthen as a result of language learning." » | Patrick Wintour and Nicholas Watt | Friday, September 30, 2011

BNP: Conservative Shadow minister Michael Gove has been exposed as the influential guiding hand behind propaganda attempts to get Turkey admitted to the European Union - a move, which if successful, will see Europe utterly swamped by Muslims.
Mr Gove, who is Tory Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families and MP for Surrey Heath, is one of a cross party group of patrons of a new magazine called Turkey In Europe launched last week at a reception at the Houses of Parliament.
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News, the magazine was “launched on behalf of the patrons of Turkey in Europe who are Michael Gove MP, Dr Denis MacShane MP and Graham Watson MEP.”
Mr Macshane is from the Labour Party and Mr Watson is leader of the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament.
The editor of the new magazine, Osman Streater, said that it “was established to bring international business together and to promote Turkish membership of the European Union,” according to Hurriyet. >>> BNP News | Thursday, May 21, 2009
