English Defence League Demos 'Feed Islamic Extremism'

BBC: Right-wing groups like the English Defence League are turning parts of Britain into recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists, police have said.

The EDL emerged last year and has held demonstrations in a number of towns and cities against radicalisation.

But the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit has told BBC Radio 5 live there is evidence EDL events can encourage extremists.
Officers also say they are worried about radicalisation inside prisons.

Many EDL demonstrations and counter-demonstrations have ended in violence, and Det Supt John Larkin says they have witnessed signs of radicalisation afterwards.

"In some areas, we have evidence that once they have gone and the high-profile policing of the event has occurred, there's fertile ground for those groups who would come in to encourage people to have this reality - this is the way white Western society sees us," he said.

"And that's a potential recruiting carrot for people and that's what some of these radicalisers look for - they look for the vulnerability, for the hook to pull people through and when the EDL have been and done what they've done, they perversely leave that behind."

EDL leader Tommy Robinson said it was "ridiculous" to blame his organisation.

"9/11 was our fault, 7/7 was our fault, there's been 17,000 terrorist attacks since September 11th, I guess they're our fault," he said.

"I guess the last 1,400 years of history, where Islam's been at war with non-Islam, is our fault. It's ridiculous.

"We're not the cause. The root cause of the problem is the Koran, it's Islam." >>> Phil Mackie, Reporter, BBC Radio 5 live | Friday, November 19, 2010

Founders of The Huffington Post Sued for 'Stealing Website Blueprint'

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Two Democratic political consultants have claimed that The Huffington Post's founders stole their blueprint for the popular news-and-views website.

Peter Daou and James Boyce claim they came up with the site's signature blend of blogs by prominent people, news aggregation, original reporting and online community-building, originally envisioned as a liberal counterpoint to such conservative-tilting sites as the Drudge Report.

In a statement, Huffington Post co-founders Arianna Huffington and Kenneth Lerer called the claims "pure fantasy."

The site has become an online colossus, built on the idea of shared effort. It has made the top 10 current events and global news sites, launched city-specific pages and developed a roster of sections such as food and books. 'Bomb' Found on Germany-bound Plane in Namibia, Police Say

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A suspected bomb, complete with detonator and stopwatch, was discovered during a routine security check on luggage destined for a Germany-bound aeroplane in Namibia on Wednesday.

The package was discovered in the terminal building of Windhoek International Airport shortly before it was due to be loaded onto an Air Berlin plane bound for Munich.

A spokesman for Germany’s Federal Crime Office (BKA) said it was still unclear if the package could have been detonated.

On Wednesday, Germany upped its security threat level after being warned by an intelligence ally about a possible terrorist attack towards the end of the month. >>> Aislinn Laing in Cape Town | Thursday, November 18, 2010
Top Conservative: Recession? You've Never
Had It So Good

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The vast majority of Britons have "never had it so good" because of the low interest rates during the recession, Lord Young, a senior adviser to David Cameron, has declared.

Lord Young, the Prime Minister's enterprise adviser, said a drop in mortgage rates "since this so-called recession" had left most people better off. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the Conservative peer also said "people will wonder what all the fuss was about" when looking back at the Government's spending cuts, the deepest in more than 30 years.

He described the loss of about 100,000 public-sector jobs a year as being within "the margin of error" in the context of the 30 million-strong job market as a whole.

The remarks are likely to prove inflammatory after the worst recession in a generation which has led to a sharp rise in unemployment and resulted in millions of workers forced to accept a pay freeze.

Critics of the Coalition will seize on the comments to claim that ministers are out of touch with the impact of government cutbacks on poorer families. >>> Chistopher Hope, and Robert Winnett | Thursday, November 18, 2010

Churches Lose Their Vicars as Anglicans "Jump Ship" for Rome, Warns Rowan Williams

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has warned that parishes will be left without vicars as hundreds of Anglicans “jump ship” for Rome.

Dr Williams acknowledged that traditionalists who cannot accept Church of England plans to ordain women bishops were in “considerable confusion and distress”.

But the Pope’s offer to accommodate disaffected Anglicans would leave the Church with “practical challenges” as vicars resign and churches lose worshippers, he said.

Dr Williams’s comments came in his first media interview since The Daily Telegraph disclosed that five Anglican bishops were to join a new section of the Roman Catholic Church established by Pope Benedict XVI. >>> Tim Ross, Religious Affairs Editor | Thursday, November 18, 2010
China May Seek to 'Control the Internet', US Report on Web Hijack Warns

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: China “hijacked” 15 per cent of the world’s internet traffic earlier this year, according to a report to the US Congress, in what could be a new form of cyber-terrorism.

A state-run telecoms firm is accused of diverting traffic including data from US military and government websites, and some in Britain, via Chinese servers.

Experts fear that the authorities could have carried out “severe malicious activities” as a result of the 18-minute operation, even harvesting sensitive data such as the contents of email messages or implanting viruses in computers worldwide.

The report by the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission says it raises the prospect that China might use its powers to “assert some level of control over the internet”. >>> Martin Beckford, Heidi Blake and Duncan Gardham | Thursday, November 18, 2010

>>> ATS | Jeudi 18 Novembre 2010

Clinton Critical of Religious Freedom in Europe

YAHOO! NEWS: WASHINGTON – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized Wednesday the state of religious freedom in Europe, as Washington highlighted policies and attitudes toward Muslim veils and Islam as a whole.

"Several European countries have placed harsh restrictions on religious expression," Clinton said, without elaborating as she unveiled the State Department's report on international religious freedom for the last year.

Her assistant secretary for human rights, Michael Posner, cited France's ban on wearing the niqab and other face coverings in public places and a Swiss motion passed last year that bans building new minarets.

Both measures have been criticized as intolerant moves stigmatizing Europe's growing Muslim population.

Posner acknowledged "growing sensitivity and tension in Europe" over Islam.

"What we are urging our European friends to do is to take every measure to try to alleviate that tension," he added.

The different attitudes toward Muslims in Europe and the United States are the source of frequent tensions and misunderstandings between both sides of the Atlantic.

"We have gone to court in the United States to enforce the right of Muslim women and girls to wear a burqa, and on the streets, in schools, et cetera," said Posner.

"That's our position. It's a position we articulate when we talk to our European friends." >>> AFP | Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Obama Greets Muslim Pilgrims

NEW AMERICAN: Only a few days have passed since President Obama’s return from an expensive overseas jaunt in which he traveled from India to Indonesia praising Islam, but the scandal which his statements on Islam and Jihad evoked did not cause him to shirk what he apparently views as his duty to greet Hajj pilgrims. In a November 15 press release, Obama declared:
Michelle and I extend our greetings for a happy Eid-ul-Adha to Muslims worldwide and wish safe travels to those performing Hajj. This year, nearly three million pilgrims from more than 160 countries - including the United States - have gathered in Mecca and neighboring sites to perform the Hajj rituals and stand together in prayer.

On Eid, Muslims around the world will commemorate Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, and distribute food to those less fortunate - a reminder of the shared values and the common roots of three of the world's major religions.

On behalf of the American people, we extend our best wishes during this Hajj season – Eid Mubarak and Hajj Mabrour.
The administration’s portrayal of Eid as a commemoration of “Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son” deftly dodges the fact that at the heart of Eid is one of Mohammed’s more embarrassing misunderstandings of Old Testament history. In Surah 37, Mohammed mistakenly portrayed Ishmael — not Isaac — as the son whom Abraham was prepared to sacrifice, committing his followers to rote repetition of misunderstanding of Genesis 22 down to this day, and a belief system which is markedly not of a “common root” with Judaism and Christianity.

>>> Autor: Martin Lutz | Mittwoch, 17. Euro Crisis: Britain Needs to Prepare for an Economic Dark Age Next Door

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The crisis in the eurozone shows why this country must widen its horizons, writes Simon Heffer.

Photobucket
The Euro might not survive in its present form. Photo: The Daily Telegraph

On a shimmering day last June, I was talking to one of our most intelligent diplomats about the future of the euro. He told me, matter-of-factly, that there would be a serious crisis again before Christmas, and he suggested that it might not even survive in its present form. He has been proved right about the first point. Whether he is right about the second is anyone's guess, but if the markets have their way, he will be.

Privately, those who understand the workings of the European Union, but who can manufacture the right amount of detachment about them, admit that the iron façade of common purpose in the European project is starting to creak and rust. For years, a series of pretences has been entered into by dreamers of the European dream about the union's ability to advance as one entity. It has become worse since the inception of the single currency, of which this country is not, thank heaven, a member.

The club pretends (or sought to pretend: it is now wearing a bit thin) that the great disparities between, say, an economy like Germany's and one like Ireland's or Portugal's could be accommodated within the same common policy; and could be so while individual countries were allowed a measure of economic sovereignty, such as setting their own tax rates. Technically, deficits were to be regulated, but in practice, and in the interests of not upsetting any applecarts, they were not: otherwise, France and Italy would have been booted out long ago. The result is that some countries are now threatening to break the system. And poor old Ireland, with a number of its state-owned banks facing oblivion, cannot even turn its economy around, despite heroic amounts of self-flagellation. But then, if you were trying to have an export-led recovery when your goods were denominated in a currency that is among the most expensive in the world, you would be suffering, too. HSBC Doubles Salaries Of Investment Bankers

SKY NEWS: Banking giant HSBC is doubling the basic pay of hundreds of its senior investment bankers, Sky News can reveal.

Sky's City editor Mark Kleinman reports that the bank began informing staff in London, Hong Kong and New York about the pay rises last week.

A source close to the bank said some senior managers outside the global banking and markets (GBM) division were also being handed the pay increases.

HSBC's move comes ahead of the annual bank bonus round in the New Year.

"As UK politicians intensify warnings about the payment of mega-bonuses, HSBC may legitimately be able to point to a sharply reduced bonus pot by virtue of the fact that it will have only recently awarded large salary increases," noted Kleinman. Iran Charges Two German Journalists With Spying Over Ashtiani Case

Greek Rescue Frays As Irish Crisis Drags On

Hajj Rituals Test Saudi Arabian Authorities

While more than a billion Muslims around the world celebrated Eid today, those gathered in the Al-Masha'er district of Saudi Arabia proceeded with their hajj rituals – throwing pebbles at vast pillars, shaving their heads and sacrificing animals.

Shaving the head, or halq, is a fundamental act for all male pilgrims during the pilgrimage: Muhammad is said to have prayed three times for men who removed all their hair and only once for those who trimmed it.

The slaughter of an animal – qurbani – marks Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah's command. The ministry of hajj proudly announced earlier this month that more than 100,000 Somali sheep were on hand to cover the high demand for sacrificial animals, adding to the 400,000 waiting in Jeddah and the extra million already being imported. >>> Riazat Butt, religious affairs correspondent | Tuesday, November 16, 2010

The Horrible Truth Starts to Dawn on Europe's Leaders

TELEGRAPH BLOGS – AMBROSE EVANS-PRITCHARD: The entire European Project is now at risk of disintegration, with strategic and economic consequences that are very hard to predict.

In a speech this morning, EU President Herman Van Rompuy (poet, and writer of Japanese and Latin verse) warned that if Europe’s leaders mishandle the current crisis and allow the eurozone to break up, they will destroy [the] European Union itself.

“We’re in a survival crisis. We all have to work together in order to survive with the euro zone, because if we don’t survive with the euro zone we will not survive with the European Union,” he said.

Well, well. This theme is all too familiar to readers of The Daily Telegraph, but it comes as something of a shock to hear such a confession after all these years from Europe’s president.

He is admitting that the gamble of launching a premature and dysfunctional currency without a central treasury, or debt union, or economic government, to back it up – and before the economies, legal systems, wage bargaining practices, productivity growth, and interest rate sensitivity, of North and South Europe had come anywhere near sustainable convergence – may now backfire horribly.

Jacques Delors and fellow fathers of EMU were told by Commission economists in the early 1990s that this reckless adventure could not work as constructed, and would lead to a traumatic crisis. They shrugged off the warnings. Read on and comment >>> Ambrose Evans-Pritchard | Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Europe Fears That Debt Crisis Is Ready to Spread

Photobucket

THE NEW YORK TIMES: LONDON — European officials, increasingly concerned that the Continent’s debt crisis will spread, are warning that any new rescue plans may need to cover Portugal as well as Ireland to contain the problem they tried to resolve six months ago.

Any such plan would have to be preceded by a formal request for assistance from each country before it would be put in place. And for months now, Ireland has insisted that it has enough funds to keep it going until spring. Portugal says it, too, needs no help and emphasizes that it is in a stronger position than Ireland.

While some important details are different, the current situation feels eerily similar to what happened months ago in Greece, where the cost of borrowing rose precipitously.

European authorities stepped in with a rescue package, expecting an economic recovery and the creation of new European rescue funds to fend off future panics by bond investors whose money is needed by countries to refinance their debt.

But with economic conditions weakening, markets are once again in turmoil. Rescuing Ireland may no longer be enough.

Stronger countries and weaker countries using the common currency of the euro are being pulled in different directions.

Some economists wonder if unity will hold or if some new system that allows countries to move on one of two parallel financial tracks is needed. Read on and comment >>> Landon Thomas Jnr and James Kanter | Monday, November 15, 2010

Euro Under Siege After Portugal Hits Panic Button

Euro Under Siege After Portugal Hits Panic Button

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The euro is facing an unprecedented crisis after another country indicated that it was at a “high risk” of requiring an international bail-out.

Portugal became the latest European nation to suggest it was on the brink of seeking help from Brussels after Ireland confirmed it had begun preliminary talks over its debt problems.

Greece also disclosed yesterday that its economic problems are even worse than previously thought. Last night, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the spectre of the euro collapsing as she warned: “If the euro fails, then Europe fails.” >>> Bruno Waterfield in Brussels and Robert Winnett | Monday, November 15, 2010
Nick Clegg Asked to Help Deliver on Conservative Manifesto Plans to Axe Human Rights Act

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has been given the job of helping to scrap the Human Rights Act, sparking anger among back-bench Conservative MPs.

The MPs are furious that Liberal Democrat leader Mr Clegg has been given the job of helping to deliver a key Tory party manifesto commitment.

The news has emerged on the day that Ken Clarke, the Justice Secretary, is being grilled by a cross party group of MPs about the Government’s human rights policy.

Mr Clegg has been a strong supporter of the Human Rights Act, stating in mid-May after the Coalition was established that he wanted to lead a campaign to ‘sell’ the legislation to a sceptical public.

He said in a speech: “We will be seeking to actively promote greater public understanding of the rights that people already enjoy. People simply aren’t aware of the rights which every citizen in the United Kingdom enjoys under legislation in force.” >>> Christopher Hope, Whitehall Editor | Monday, November 15, 2010
For Christ’s Sake! Guantanamo Seven 'Paid Off' to Halt Legal Action Against Government

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: A group of former Guantanamo Bay detainees who claim they were tortured with the complicity of the British security services have been paid millions of pounds to drop legal action against the Government.

Ministers will announce tomorrow that a deal has been reached with the men, at least one of whom is expected to receive more than £1 million of taxpayers’ money.

The former terrorism suspects, some of whom were foreign residents claiming asylum in Britain, were suing the Government for damages over their treatment while in custody. The security services are thought to have pushed for the settlement in order to avoid details of their secret activities being disclosed in court.

Both MI5 and MI6 could have been forced to disclose information that could have threatened national security. Already some information from the defence was starting to slip out, causing anxiety among some senior officials.

The cost of a long running court case - which could have run into tens of millions of pounds - are also likely to have been a factor. Read on and comment >>> Andrew Porter, Political Editor | Monday, November 15, 2010

>>> m. e. Rangun | Montag, 15. November 2010

Ireland Debt Crisis Worsens as Portugal Warns of Contagion Effect on Europe

THE GUARDIAN: Investors pressure Brussels for solution but Irish officials deny any need for bailout

The Irish debt crisis intensified today, after other high-deficit countries such as Portugal warned about a possible contagion effect, and investors pressured European officials to come up with a solution to calm markets. Irish officials reiterated that they don't need any bail-out.

The crisis moved from trading rooms into the political arena, as European finance ministers are meeting tomorrow and the day after in Brussels. Investors expect them to announce a resolution, or at least to shed some clarity about how much money they would lose were any European country to default.

"The Irish problem is already spreading, but it could get more violent and volatile," said Ashok Shah, chief investment officer at London Capital, a fund management firm. "They have to get this bail-out, they have a period of time before it gets impossible, before nasty things happen. The longer they leave it, the more difficult it will get."

Pressure on the EU escalated after Portugal's finance minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos said his country was at risk of a possible contagion, as "we are not facing only a national or country problem - it is the problems of Greece, Portugal and Ireland," he said. >>> Elena Moya | Monday, November 15, 2010
Eurozone Debt Crisis: Portugal Admits 'It Could Need EU Bail-out'

Fernando Teixeira dos Santos, the Portuguese Finance Minister, has warned that the fall out from concerns over Ireland's public finances could create a contagion effect among its neighbours.

"The risk is high because we are not facing only a national or country problem," he told Dow Jones news wires, in reference to the possibility that Lisbon will need international financial assistance.

“It is the problems of Greece, Portugal and Ireland. This is not a problem of only this country. This has to do with the euro zone and the stability of the eurozone, and that is why contagion in this framework is more likely. >>> Andrew Hough, Bruno Waterfield in Brussels, Robert Winnett and Heidi Blake | Monday, November 15, 2010

Nazis Were Given ‘Safe Haven’ in U.S., Report Says

THE NEW YORK TIMES: WASHINGTON — A secret history of the United States government’s Nazi-hunting operation concludes that American intelligence officials created a “safe haven” in the United States for Nazis and their collaborators after World War II, and it details decades of clashes, often hidden, with other nations over war criminals here and abroad.

The 600-page report, which the Justice Department has tried to keep secret for four years, provides new evidence about more than two dozen of the most notorious Nazi cases of the last three decades.

It describes the government’s posthumous pursuit of Dr. Josef Mengele, the so-called Angel of Death at Auschwitz, part of whose scalp was kept in a Justice Department official’s drawer; the vigilante killing of a former Waffen SS soldier in New Jersey; and the government’s mistaken identification of the Treblinka concentration camp guard known as Ivan the Terrible.

The report catalogs both the successes and failures of the band of lawyers, historians and investigators at the Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations, which was created in 1979 to deport Nazis.

Perhaps the report’s most damning disclosures come in assessing the Central Intelligence Agency’s involvement with Nazi émigrés. Scholars and previous government reports had acknowledged the C.I.A.’s use of Nazis for postwar intelligence purposes. But this report goes further in documenting the level of American complicity and deception in such operations.

The Justice Department report, describing what it calls “the government’s collaboration with persecutors,” says that O.S.I investigators learned that some of the Nazis “were indeed knowingly granted entry” to the United States, even though government officials were aware of their pasts. “America, which prided itself on being a safe haven for the persecuted, became — in some small measure — a safe haven for persecutors as well,” it said. >>> Eric Lichtblau | Saturday, November 13, 2010
Britain Is Cruel

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Britain is a nation of cruel humour and angry people, according to Dame Helen Mirren, who believes life is far better in France.

The actress told a French magazine that the tradition of British decency is in decline.

"I'm under the impression that this notion is disappearing from our society, where conflicts are made worse on cinema and on television, where people are nasty and cruel on the internet and where, in general terms, everybody seems to me to be very angry.

"This causes me a lot of pain," she said.

She singled out British comedy as an example. "I prefer the finesse of French humour. English humour is harsher, more scathing, more cruel and more surreal too, as illustrated by Monty Python and the TV series Little Britain, where situations are far-fetched and over-the-top." The Truth Spoken At Last*! Australian Politician Claims Britain Is 'Overrun with Immigrants and Refugees’

Ms Hanson, the former One Nation party chief who warned that Australia was at risk of being “swamped by Asians”, said France was also inundated with foreigners and she had decided to stay in Australia.

“I love England but so many people want to leave there because it’s overrun with immigrants and refugees,” she said.

“France is becoming filled with Muslims and the French and English are losing their way of life because they’re controlled by foreigners.” Read on and comment >>> | Sunday, November 14, 2010

Pauline Hanson is right, of course. She speaks the truth. But the MSM will villify her for doing so. They’ll say she belongs to the “far-right”, and associate her with the BNP. But the hard reality is that she is RIGHT! Wherever she is on the political spectrum.

But what will be done about this sad situation? FA! Why? Because our so-called leaders have NO BALLS. Take one look at them! Has David Cameron started shaving yet? Have his balls dropped? Ditto Cleggover, though his nickname would suggest otherwise!

When are we going to be governed by REAL politicians – politicians who think more of their country and its citizens than they do of their own image?

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

Britain's Top Soldier Says al-Qaeda Cannot Be Beaten

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: The new head of Britain's armed forces, Gen Sir David Richards, has warned that the West cannot defeat al-Qaeda and militant Islam.

He said defeating Islamist militancy was "unnecessary and would never be achieved".

However, he argued that it could be "contained" to allow Britons to lead secure lives.

Gen Richards, 58, said the threat posed by "al-Qaeda and its affiliates" meant Britain's national security would be at risk for at least 30 years.

The general, who will today lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall in memory of Britain's war dead, said the West's war against what he described as a "pernicious ideology" had parallels with the fight against Nazi Germany in the Second World War. >>> Sean Rayment, Defence Correspondent | Saturday, November 13, 2010

Italy and France Welcome Injured Iraqi Christians

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: Italy and France have airlifted Iraqi Christians injured in the October 31 church attack to Rome and Paris for medical treatment, despite criticism that such actions are encouraging their exodus.

26 Iraqis were flown to Rome on Friday at the request of the Vatican, while the French government vowed to fly a further 93 Iraqis to Paris to add to the 54 already receiving treatment there.

Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, has warned other countries, without naming any, not to encourage Christians to emigrate.

"The countries that have welcomed the victims ... of this attack have done a noble thing, but that should not encourage emigration," Mr al-Maliki said.

Eric Besson, the French minister of immigration, said that his move fitted France's "tradition of asylum", and that asylum would be "handed out generously" to those who sought it. >>> | Friday, November 12, 2010
