German Army Rules on Beards and Tattoos

BBC: The German defence ministry has issued new rules on how soldiers should look. "Pornographic" tattoos, ostentatious piercings and bushy beards have all been outlawed, it seems.

"Ordinance A.26301.1l, on the Appearance of Federal Troops" caught the eye of military blogger Thomas Wiegold - "something of a weathervane of army opinion" according to Der Spiegel magazine. The 200-plus comments from soldiers on his blog post outnumber those on more serious issues.

As well as the ban on mohawks and bushy beards, new rules on tattoos proved particularly controversial. They are permitted, but "discriminatory, pornographic and unconstitutional" images must always be covered up when soldiers are in uniform. The rule applies even if they appear on the hands, neck or face - which, as the comments note, could prove difficult. » | Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Russian Opera Singer Withdraws from Bayreuth Festival over Swastika Tattoo

THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH: A Russian opera singer has been forced to pull out of a celebrated music festival in German because he has a swastika and other Nazi symbols tattooed on his chest.

[Y]evgeny Nikitin, 38, who was once in a heavy metal band and got the body art done as a youth, withdrew from the Bayreuth festival, which celebrates Richard Wagner's work, after discussions with its organisers.

He was due to sing the lead role in The Flying Dutchman, the opening production, on Wednesday. The festival is particularly sensitive to Nazi associations because Wagner was an anti-Semite and his English daughter-in-law, Winifred Wagner, became friends with Adolf Hitler, who supported its performances under the Third Reich.

Mr Nikitin got the tattoos as a young man. He has a large swastika on the right side of his chest and on the left a "life rune", a symbol used by the SS Lebensborn project, which supported "racially pure" Aryan women.

In a statement released by the festival, the bass baritone said: "I was not aware of the extent of the irritation and offence these signs and symbols would cause, particularly in Bayreuth given the context of the festival's history. I had them done in my youth. It was a big mistake and I wish I'd never done it.

"It was not clear to me that the symbols that I have tattooed on my chest could have any connotations or even by used by Nazis and neo-Nazis," the singer added in an email to the Sunday German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. » | Tom Parfitt, Moscow | Sunday, Juy 22, 2012

White Supremacist Who Changed His Life – and Face

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: One of America's most violent and well known white supremacists, Bryon Widner, has undergone months of surgery to remove the hate tattoos that once covered his face.

Bryon Widner rejected the racist beliefs that had made him a notorious figure amongst the American extreme Right, but was struggling to readapt to society because of the web of tattoos that covered his face and neck.

Widner, known as an "enforcer" for US racist groups, was unable to find a job after leaving his past behind.

The former racist, a founder of the Vinlanders gang of skinheads in Ohio, embarked on a painful series of 25 surgeries that took 16 months and cost $32,400 (£20,233). » | Monday, October 31, 2011

US Air Force Recruiters End Ban on Tattoos on Saluting Arm

THE GUARDIAN: Military chiefs overturn rule on arm tattoos after 26 US air force recruits are barred from basic training

Military chiefs have scrapped a ban on tattoos decorating the saluting arm of recruits joining the US air force, following a backlash among heavily inked young Americans signing up for duty.

The air force recruiting service instituted a policy on 25 November prohibiting tattoos below the elbow on the right arm of recruits, citing "military image". The service did not want tattoos to be visible when its airmen salute.

Within a week, the rule meant that 26 recruits were turned away from basic training, causing confusion among 17,000 people due to join the service under a delayed entry program, which allows for a hiatus of up to 12 months between signing up and reporting for duty.

By the end of last week, military bosses had relented. In a statement to the in-house Air Force Times, the recruiting service's commander, Brigadier General Alfred Stewart, said that "regrettably", recruits had been caught in the middle of the change. He said: "At this time, recruiting service is revising guidance recently sent to the field." >>> Andrew Clark in New York | Sunday, December 06, 2009

Doesn’t This Image Show Exactly What Is Wrong with the Decadent West?

MAIL Online: 19, Peaches Geldof has already packed a lot into her brief life.

But if she goes on recording every twist and turn on her body she may soon run out of space.

Bob Geldof's wild child daughter has already notched up a 20-odd collection of tattoos on her fresh frame - many of them references to friends and lovers.

Last week, they were on full display as she enjoyed the sun and sea on a holiday in South America.

Among the pieces of 'art' is a daisy chain which stretches from her knee to her chest. But other works are dedicated to ex-boyfriends and the teenager's estranged husband Max Drummey.

The words 'Ex Valentine' around the top of her left arm are understood to be a reference to old flame Faris Badwan, frontman with The Horrors. Body Image: Peaches Cavorts Topless on Beach to Reveal More Than 20 Bizarre Tattoos >>> By Jo Clements | Sunday, February 15, 2009
