Liz Truss in Taiwan Calls for ‘Economic Nato’ to Challenge China

THE GUARDIAN: Former British PM says Taiwan is ‘on the front line of the global battle for freedom’ during trip that China has called a ‘dangerous political show’

Free nations must commit themselves to a free Taiwan and must be prepared to back it up with concrete measures, Liz Truss has said in a keynote speech in Taipei, in which she called for an “economic Nato” to tackle Beijing’s growing authoritarianism.

The former British prime minister said she had come to show support for Taiwan, which was “on the frontline of the global battle for freedom”, under threat from a totalitarian regime in China. Truss arrived in Taiwan on Monday for a five-day visit, and is expected to meet senior government officials.

Truss, who was prime minister for 44 days in 2022 after serving as foreign secretary for the year prior, is the most senior British politician to make the trip since Margaret Thatcher, and drew a rebuke from China’s UK embassy, which said the visit was “a dangerous political show which will do nothing but harm to the UK”. » | Helen Davidson in Taipei | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

Ann Widdecombe: Don’t Have Cheese Sandwiches If You Can’t Afford Them

THE GUARDIAN: Ex-Brexit party MEP says there is no ‘given right’ to low food prices despite families struggling with cost of living

Ann Widdecombe told the BBC’s Politics Live programme that families should go without some foods if they could not afford ingredients. Photograph: Yui Mok/PA

Families should go without cheese sandwiches if they cannot afford the ingredients, Ann Widdecombe has said.

The former Brexit party MEP said there was no “given right” for low food prices, despite being told families “cannot afford to feed their children” and were having to make huge sacrifices as the cost of living crisis deepens.

Widdecombe, who joined the Reform UK party this year, was on BBC’s Politics Live programme when she was asked what she would say to consumers who could not afford to pay for basics such as the ingredients of a cheese sandwich.

“Well then you don’t have the cheese sandwich,” Widdecombe replied. “None of it’s new. We’ve been through this before. The problem is we’ve been decades now without inflation, we’ve come to regard it as some kind of given right.” » | Aletha Adu, Political correspondent | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

Disgusting! Such a cruel woman! And such an ‘I’m alright Jack’ attitude!

This woman is supposed to be a devout Roman Catholic. There is clearly no hint of Christianity in this attitude of hers. Is this woman so out of touch with reality that she cannot empathize with families struggling to put food on the table for their children?

Furthermore, and very importantly, why has the government failed to control inflation anyway? That inflation is running so high shows clearly that this is government mismanagement of the economy, the international economic circumstances notwithstanding. – © Mark Alexander

Court Rules Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Must Go to Prison While She Appeals against Sentence

THE GUARDIAN: Holmes, who was charged with defrauding investors in her blood-testing start-up, hoped to stay out of jail while she appealed her conviction

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes must begin serving her prison sentence while she appeals against her conviction on charges of defrauding investors in her failed blood-testing startup and must jointly pay $452m in restitution to the victims of her crimes, a court in San Francisco has ruled.

Holmes, who rose to fame after claiming Theranos’ small machines could run an array of diagnostic tests with just a few drops of blood, was convicted at trial in San Jose, California, in 2022 and sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison.

She had asked the ninth US circuit court of appeals to pause her sentence on 25 April, two days before she was to report to prison. The court on Tuesday denied her bail application. » | Reuters | Wednesday, May 17, 2023

No Chlorinated Chicken or Hormone-fed Beef in Future Trade Deals, Sunak Vows

THE GUARDIAN: PM to tell farmers he will never do a trade deal that includes practices associated with US factory farms

Rishi Sunak has vowed to take chlorinated chicken and hormone-fed beef off British tables in future trade deals, promising to put UK farming at the heart of government trade policy.

“There will be no chlorine-washed chicken and no hormone-treated beef on the UK market. Not now, not ever,” he will tell farmers in a letter unveiling a new government policy to improve British food security.

And in a swipe at his predecessor, Liz Truss, the prime minister will also tell the farming community that they will not be “an afterthought” in deals with foreign farmers. » | Lisa O'Carroll and Helena Horton | Tuesday, May 16, 2023

”No chlorinated chicken or hormone-fed beef” in future trade deals? I should bloody well think not! We don’t need American crap on our supermarket shelves! Just take a look at the health of the average American! Do we need to import these health problems into the UK in our food supply?

If we had never left the European Union, with its far, far superior food and health standards, we wouldn’t have this problem today.

Further, Mr Sunak, money talks. So, I doubt that you will be strong enough to say no to any future American trade deal which includes chlorinated chicken or hormone-fed beef. Your words, Mr Sunak, sound great, but they are as empty as a brothel after a police raid! – © Mark Alexander

James D. Tabor: An Unnamed Father of Jesus

May 15, 2023 | Jesus is known in Hebrew non-polemical sources as "Yeshua ben Pantera," that is "Jesus son of Pantera." The later scandalous tales of Mary, his mother, being raped by a Roman soldier, or guilty of adultery, are just that--attempts to malign both her and her "illegitimate" son. However, another possibility, that fits our earliest references to a Jewish man named Pantera, who is close to Mary's age and related to her family, remains an intriguing possibility. In this short overview I survey the main questions and what we know and don't know about Jesus' biological father.

Mark, our earliest narrative of Jesus, includes no birth story whatsoever and never mentions Joseph, husband of Mary, at all in his entire gospel--but he does call Jesus the "son of Mary." Here is my take on things.

Tsar Nicholas II: His Reign, His Faith, His Family

Jul 12, 2018 | Under Nicholas, there were enormous strides in agriculture and industrial production. There were huge economic leaps forward, and enormous progress in health, education, and social services. The evidence of this is easy to find in census information and diplomatic annuals. The fact that this has been ignored or considered unimportant in face of the end of the reign is not surprising.

This video is produced as part of the project for the book "The Romanov Royal Martyrs”, which is an impressive 512-page book, featuring nearly 200 black & white photographs, and a 56-page photo insert of more than 80 high-quality images, colorized by the acclaimed Russian artist Olga Shirnina (Klimbim) and appearing here in print for the first time.

‘No Longer Relevant to the UK’: List of 600 EU Laws to Be Scrapped Is Published

THE GUARDIAN: Government reduces number of environmental laws to cut from 1,700 to 341 but wide range to be repealed

Ministers have published the list of 600 EU laws the government plans to scrap by the end of the year in a much-reduced Brussels “bonfire” that has enraged hardline Brexiters in the Conservative party.

Two Charged after Hitler Speeches Played on Austrian Train Intercom

THE GUARDIAN: Suspects are also thought to be responsible for two other incidents on trains last week

Two people have been charged in Austria for allegedly playing speeches by Adolf Hitler via the loudspeaker system of a train running from Bregenz to Vienna.

The two suspects, who were not identified, also allegedly blasted “Heil Hitler” via the train’s intercom several times on Sunday. The authorities tracked them down by analysing video from the train cameras. Spreading Nazi propaganda is a criminal offence in Austria.

Passengers took notice of unusually loud messages being played over the high-speed Railjet train’s intercom shortly before its stop at St Pölten. Instead of announcing the upcoming stop, the system initially played a series of bloopers by the actor usually voicing the train’s announcements, as well as a fire alarm message. » | Philip Oltermann in Berlin | Monday, May 15, 2023

Turkey Election Goes to Runoff after Erdoğan Takes Girst-round Lead

THE GUARDIAN: Neither the president nor his rival Kılıçdaroğlu secured more than 50% of vote in closely fought national poll

Turkey’s presidential election is going to a runoff after Recep Tayyip Erdoğan comfortably defeated his chief rival Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu but failed to clear the 50% vote threshold needed to avoid a second round.

The 69-year-old conservative incumbent confounded pollsters’ predictions and his secular rival to win the first round of the country’s pivotal election, scoring 49.51% against Kılıçdaroğlu’s 44.88% with a small number of overseas votes left to count. The runoff will take place on 28 May.

Ahmet Yener, the head of the Supreme Electoral Board, said on Monday that even when the remaining 35,874 uncounted overseas votes were distributed, no one would secure the majority needed to win the elections outright. » | Jon Henley and agencies | Monday, May 15, 2023

King Charles III - Life before the Throne | DW Documentary

Dec 28, 2022 | After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles became the British King. He was just shy of his 73rd birthday when he took the throne on September 8, 2022. May 6, 2023, marks the coronation of Charles III. This documentary traces the course of his life.

Born Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor in London in 1948, Charles was the first child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Thus, he was heir to the crown.

The biography of the Prince of Wales was marked by ups and downs. As a child, he was said to have suffered as a result of his strict upbringing at boarding school intended to prepare him for his role as future king. After his military service, he became involved in numerous charities, especially those working with disadvantaged young people. For a long time, Charles III, was not very popular with the British public; the failure of his marriage to Diana, the "Queen of Hearts," hurt his standing. He and his then-mistress and later second wife Camilla Parker Bowles filled the gossip columns for years.

Before Charles III became king, his main commitment was to environmental protection and sustainability. He is also committed to fighting climate change. He is considered a gentleman farmer and defender of endangered species. The documentary looks back at the life of the man who is now head of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Commonwealth and the Church of England.

The Greatest Wealth Transfer in History Is Here, With Familiar (Rich) Winners

THE NEW YORK TIMES: In an era of surging home and stock values, U.S. family wealth has soared. The trillions of dollars going to heirs will largely reinforce inequality.

An intergenerational transfer of wealth is in motion in America — and it will dwarf any of the past.

Of the 73 million baby boomers, the youngest are turning 60. The oldest boomers are nearing 80. Born in midcentury as U.S. birthrates surged in tandem with an enormous leap in prosperity after the Depression and World War II, boomers are now beginning to die in larger numbers, along with Americans over 80.

Most will leave behind thousands of dollars, a home or not much at all. Others are leaving their heirs hundreds of thousands, or millions, or billions of dollars in various assets.

In 1989, total family wealth in the United States was about $38 trillion, adjusted for inflation. By 2022, that wealth had more than tripled, reaching $140 trillion. Of the $84 trillion projected to be passed down from older Americans to millennial and Gen X heirs through 2045, $16 trillion will be transferred within the next decade. » | Talmon Joseph Smith | Graphics by Karl Russell | Sunday, May 14, 2023

Now Brexit Brings a Bitter Tory Reckoning at the Polls

THE GUARDIAN: The Conservatives have much to be ashamed of after 13 years. But the surge in Lib Dem support shows Europe still matters

‘When one with honeyed words but evil mind persuades the mob, great woes befall the state.” Euripides was not of course referring to Brexit in his play Orestes, but to the chaos caused by Clytemnestra’s murder of Agamemnon and Orestes’s dispatch, in turn, of Clytemnestra.

The disastrous outcome for the Conservatives in the local elections may not lead to any physical violence, but all the signs are, as the recriminations begin, that the Tories are in for a metaphorical bloodbath.

Let us face it: the Brexiters, led by Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage, conducted their referendum campaign with honeyed words; their minds may not have been intentionally evil, but you could have fooled me. Brexit has proved to be an unmitigated disaster. » | William Keegan | Sunday, May 14, 2023

Abuse Scandals in the Catholic Church | DW Documentary

May 10, 2023 | All over the world, an increasing number of nuns are coming forward with reports that they have been sexually abused by male clerics. The documentary film provides insights into a deeply disturbing - and barely addressed -- problem within the Catholic church.

The Catholic church has been blighted by sexual abuse scandals for decades. Initially, public awareness was focused on the abuse of children and young people. But a few years ago, reports of another scandal began to emerge, one that the church tried to cover up for a long time: In many parts of the world, nuns claimed they had been raped by senior clerics. Some of the revelations also concerned high-ranking Vatican dignitaries.

Nuns who become pregnant were either threatened with expulsion from their communities or forced into abortions. These offenses, some committed in systematic fashion, were mostly ignored. In the cases that went public and therefore demanded investigation, the accused priests were acquitted by Vatican courts. But over the past two decades, the wall of silence began to crumble. In spite of explicit reports, also directed at the Holy See, for a long time the Vatican did nothing to stop the abuse and sometimes systematic sexual enslavement of nuns.

In February 2019, Pope Francis broke the taboo, admitting for the first time that the abuse of nuns and sisters had taken place within the Catholic Church - and that the problem was ongoing. Work on this documentary film had already begun three years before. In numerous countries in Europe, North America and West Africa, filmmakers Eric Quintin and Marie-Pierre Raimbault spoke to nuns who suffered sexual violence at the hands of priests. The film hears from nuns, mother superiors, priests and people who worked closely with Pope Francis. Their accounts shine a disturbing light on a Catholic Church scandal that’s been shrouded in secrecy for far too long.

Tory Anarchy Breaks Out as Revolt Looms on Brexit Laws

THE GUARDIAN: Ex-ministers attack Rishi Sunak’s leadership as pro-Johnson wing calls for lower taxes

Rishi Sunak is likely to face a Commons mutiny over the retained EU law bill reminiscent of the rows over the Maastricht treaty. Photograph: House of Commons/UK Parliament/PA

Rishi Sunak was losing control of an increasingly anarchic Tory party on Saturday as former cabinet ministers openly criticised the direction of policy under his leadership and dozens of backbench MPs plotted a new rebellion over Brexit.

Amid recriminations over the heavy Conservative losses in recent council elections, and with pro-Brexit MPs incensed that Sunak’s government is dropping plans to shred more than 4,000 EU laws within months, discipline was at risk of completely disintegrating on the right of the party.

Speaking at the inaugural conference of the pro-Boris Johnson Conservative Democratic Organisation (CDO) in Bournemouth on Saturday, former home secretary Priti Patel suggested the party’s high command under Sunak was responsible for the losses.

In a clear swipe at those now in charge, she said some senior figures at Westminster had “done a better job at damaging our party” over the past year than Labour. She also criticised MPs for removing Johnson, saying they had overseen the “ousting of our most electorally successful prime minister since Margaret Thatcher”. » | Toby Helm and Michael Savage | Saturday, May 13, 2023

‘The Country Is Becoming a Desert’: Drought-struck Spain Is Running Out of Water

FRANCE 24: Spain is running out of water. After a long and painful drought, the country has been hit by an unusually early heat wave, evaporating even more of the "blue gold" it still has left in its reservoirs. While farmers fear for their survival, environmentalists say it is time for “Europe’s back garden” to rethink how it uses and manages its increasingly scarce water supply.

There’s an expression in Spain: “En Abril, aguas mil” – April will bring the rains. Only this year, it didn't. The month of April was the driest month on record, and several Spanish cities registered their highest April temperatures yet. In Cordoba, the mercury rose to 38.7°C (almost 102°F) at one point, and in the province of Seville in Andalusia to 37.8°C.

Coming on the heels of a long-term drought and an unusually warm and dry winter, the latest heat wave has sparked a real fear of shortages. » | Cyrielle CABOT | Saturday, May 13, 2023

Michael Lambert: The Government Has No Idea How to Solve Our Post-Brexit Problems

May 13, 2023 | The #rishisunak government has no idea how to solve the country's severe economic problems following #brexit . They fail to understand that all of our problems stem from a shortage of funding and that the only way that can be resolved is through expansion of the economy.

Whilst preoccupied with #immigration the government does not realise that most asylum seekers have no legal route to this country and instead are coming here in lorries as well as by boat across the Channel. Others who come here on temporary work visas often remain in the black economy instead of returning home. Immigration from the EU is now negative with more EU members returning to the EU than coming to the UK.

One of the consequences of the declining #economy following Brexit is that instead of 'the brightest and the best' coming to the UK, our own brightest and best are leaving to live and work in other countries.

UK water companies which, like gas, electricity and the railways, are all privately-owned, mostly by foreigners. Whilst they tip sewage in our rivers and sea they paid out £1.4 billion last year alone in dividends.

43-year-old Kemi Badenoch, an extremely rude, arrogant and self-assured woman, who has been an MP only for six years and a cabinet minister only for six months, is the bookies' favourite to replace Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservatives and Prime Minister if he is challenged for the leadership.

Portuguese Parliament Legalises Euthanasia after Long Battle

THE GUARDIAN: Decision to allow medically assisted dying has divided the deeply Catholic country

The Portuguese parliament, which had previously passed the euthanasia bill four times, only to see it sent back every time for a constitutional review due to opposition from the president.Photograph: Antonio Cotrim/EPA

After a long battle, Portugal passed a law on Friday legalising euthanasia for people in great suffering and with incurable diseases, joining just a handful of countries around the world.

The issue has divided the deeply Catholic country and was strongly opposed by conservative president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a devout churchgoer.

Under its provisions, people aged over 18 will be allowed to request assistance in dying if they are terminally ill and in intolerable suffering. It will only cover those suffering “lasting” and “unbearable” pain, unless they are deemed not to be mentally fit to make such a decision.

The law will be applicable only to nationals and legal residents and will not extend to foreigners coming into the country to seek assisted dying. » | AFP in Lisbon | Friday, May 12, 2023

‘We’re against LGBT’: Erdoğan Targets Gay and Trans People ahead of Critical Turkish Election

THE GUARDIAN: Scant progress for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights in peril ahead of polls as president’s ‘family values’ rhetoric stokes culture war

At campaign rallies across Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has missed no opportunity to attack gay and trans people. “We are against the LGBT,” he told one rally near the Black Sea. “Family is sacred to us – a strong family means a strong nation.”

At another rally earlier this month, Erdoğan accused every party in Turkey’s opposition coalition of being LGBT.

When Turkish voters go to the polls in parliamentary and presidential elections on 14 May, LGBTQ+ rights as well as women’s rights will be on the ballot. Erdoğan has withdrawn Turkey from the Council of Europe’s Istanbul convention on violence against women and pushed a conservative vision of family values while attacking groups that defend women and queer rights.

For many Turkish women and the LGBTQ+ community, the forthcoming vote represents a stark choice. They say Erdoğan’s re-election risks further fuelling a culture war that he and his supporters have done much to inflame, empowering institutions to crack down on anyone seen as different and to turn a blind eye to a statewide problem of violence against women, gay and trans people. » | Ruth Michaelson and Deniz Barış Narlı | Friday, May 12, 2023

The Guardian View on Turkey’s Election: An End to Erdoğan’s Authoritarianism?

THE GUARDIAN – EDITORIAL: A neck-and-neck race could conclude the president’s two decades in power, with profound consequences for the country

Few elections have been more closely contested or more important than those taking place in Turkey on Sunday. Voters face a stark choice which will not only define their country’s future, but reverberate more widely. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been part of a broader global shift towards authoritarianism. His defeat, after 20 years in power, could allow Turkey to move back towards democracy and greater freedom – the pledge which unites the multiparty opposition Nation’s Alliance. Another victory for him might see it slide into outright autocracy – leading to the destruction of essential institutions and civil society, already badly damaged by the assaults of the president and his Justice and Development party (AKP). » | Editorial | Thursday, May 11, 2023

Labour and Lib Dems Can Win Big by Calling Out the Brexit Mess

THE GUARDIAN: We must never stop speaking up on the damage it is doing to Britain’s economy, society, culture and standing in the world

Nelson Mandela said: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” It’s one of many political quotes that I have on my office wall. Sadly, the Brexiters had it on their walls too. They showed how change once thought unthinkable can become the status quo. With the populist virus still rife in the Tory party, with Labour insisting it will “make Brexit work” and the Lib Dems also largely silent on it, it would appear to be the settled will of our politics that the Brexit decision cannot be revisited.

But if converting the country to a bad Brexit was possible, so is restoring it to good sense. People by and large accepted the result. They gave the government the chance to show it could work. However, bit by bit, despite the welter of gaslighting propaganda, more and more have learned through direct experience that Brexit is damaging lives and livelihoods. » | Alastair Campbell | Thursday, May 11, 2023

UK Will Have to Raise Retirement Age after Election, Minister Says

THE GUARDIAN: Work and pensions secretary says his successor will have to ‘grasp nettle’ of bringing forward rise to 68

Ministers will have to “grasp the nettle” on bringing forward the rise in the state pension age to 68 in the first couple of years of the next parliament, Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, has suggested.

After delaying the decision because of stalling life expectancy, Stride said it would still have to be taken, but it would probably be one for his successor in the job and that people would still get 10 years of notice.

He also said there were “no plans currently” to change the triple lock on raising pensions in the next Conservative manifesto but stopped short of guaranteeing it would be retained.

Stride made the remarks as he addressed journalists at a lunch in Westminster, when he was asked whether the government will attempt to revisit its plans to raise the pension age in future in light of riots and protests in France.

The work and pensions secretary, a close ally of Rishi Sunak, said: “I don’t think it’s in our national psyche to start rioting and burning things over the state pension. Ultimately I took the decision [to delay] because of Covid and economic uncertainties and the fact that the important thing is you give people 10 years notice of any change.” » | Rowena Mason, Whitehall editor | Thursday, May 11, 2023

She said he then harmed her reputation by writing in a post on his platform Truth Social in 2022 that her allegations were a "complete con job," "a hoax" and "a lie."

Khan was taken into custody during a court appearance in Islamabad on corruption charges. His detainment marks a dramatic escalation of political tensions in the country. Protests erupted in several cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Karachi, and Khan's hometown, Lahore.

Against the backdrop of a severe economic crisis, Khan remains influential. Across the country, people turned out in force to protest his arrest. If convicted, Imran Khan, by far the most popular opposition politician, will likely be prevented from running in the upcoming elections in November.
