Margaret Thatcher English Accent Interview Excerpts Career as Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher was a remarkable lady. A truly remarkable lady. She had a command of politics like few others, she spoke with such clarity and so eloquently, she always dressed appropriately, and she comported herself with such dignity. Furthermore, and very importantly, she never lost her femininity despite living in a man's world. Requiescat in pace! — © Mark Alexander
Donald Trump Will DESTROY America If Elected | The Warning with Steve Schmidt
That so many Americans are even contemplating the re-election of Trump into the White House can only make one wonder about them and shake one’s head. It is to be hoped that the American voters will not inflict Trump on the rest of the world a second time. A one four-year term of Trump was quite enough, thank you very much!
Moreover, Americans must surely know that Trump is Putin’s marionette. Putin is the one pulling Trump’s strings; Trump does Putin’s bidding for him.
Without Trump, I firmly believe that Brexit would never have happened. Trump helped his buddy, Farage, bring about that ridiculous and impoverishing decision for the UK to leave the European Union, thus destabilising and weakening the European Union to Putin’s delight. If given another term in the White House, Trump will oblige Putin even further and withdraw the USA from NATO. Trump has promised to do that; and we should believe him. This is the stuff of which Putin can only dream. But it will be our nightmare.
Keep Trump OUT of the White House! You know it makes sense. – © Mark Alexander

Iran Executes German-Iranian Dissident after Years in Captivity
THE GUARDIAN: Berlin warns of ‘serious consequences’ for ‘inhumane regime’ after 69-year-old Jamshid Sharmahd put to death
Iran has executed a 69-year-old German-Iranian political scientist after years in captivity, sparking outrage in Germany and beyond.
Berlin warned of “serious consequences” for Iran’s “inhumane regime” after Jamshid Sharmahd was put to death on Monday, while a Norway-based human rights group labelled the execution the “extrajudicial killing of a hostage”.
Sharmahd, a German citizen of Iranian descent and a US resident, was seized by Iranian authorities in 2020 while travelling through the United Arab Emirates, according to his family.

A Divided America Responds to Nazi Persecution | Unites States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Sep 21, 2022 | Reports out of Germany in the late 1930s and early 1940s showed that life was increasingly dangerous for Jews. Some Americans urged the US government to offer refuge to those attempting to flee, but most did not want to open the doors. In 1939, 20,000 Americans packed Madison Square Garden—the stage adorned with swastikas and American flags—for a pro-Nazi rally. Outside, 100,000 Americans protested the event.

When Paris Was German: German Soldiers in Wartime Paris I Slice History | Full Documentary
Oct 27, 2024 | June 14th 1940, the troops of the Wehrmacht entered Paris. This was the beginning of the occupation of the French capital, which was then relegated to the rank of an open city. The enemy made the law there for more than four years, until August 1944.
Many things have been said and written about the daily life of the French during this very particular period, made of shortages, repressive measures and raids. But never on the side of the occupying forces... What about the German soldiers? How did they live through this period? What were their living conditions like? Did they have any contact with the French population?

Stehen uns dunkle Zeiten bevor?
MARK ALEXANDER: Wir leben wieder in verrückten Zeiten.

Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Trafficking
SKY NEWS: Prosecutors say 15 men were induced by "force, fraud and coercion" to engage in drug-fuelled sex parties, in which they were sometimes directed to wear costumes, use sex toys, and consume alcohol and muscle relaxants.
Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges.
The 80-year-old appeared at federal court in Central Islip, on Long Island, New York, to enter his plea.
He is due back in court on 12 December and is free on a $10m (£7.7m) bond.
It is alleged that for years Jeffries, his romantic partner Matthew Smith, and a third man, James Jacobson, lured men into taking part in sex parties by promising modelling for the clothing retailer.
Jacobson, 71, an employee of Jeffries, planned to plead not guilty, his lawyer said before today's hearing. » | Sky News | Friday, October 25, 2024

'He's Talking Like Hitler': Anne Applebaum Warns Trump Wants 'Absolute Power' in Second Term
THE EDITORIAL BOARD: DONALD TRUMP SAYS HE WILL… BELIEVE HIM.
THE NEW YORK TIMES: Donald Trump has described at length the dangerous and disturbing actions he says he will take if he wins the presidency.
His rallies offer a steady stream of such promises and threats — things like prosecuting political opponents and using the military against U.S. citizens. These statements are so outrageous and outlandish, so openly in conflict with the norms and values of American democracy that many find them hard to regard as anything but empty bluster.
We have two words for American voters: Believe him.
The record shows that Mr. Trump often pursues his stated goals, regardless of how plainly they lack legal or moral grounding. The record further shows that many of his most reckless efforts in his first administration were stymied only because of others in his administration who blocked, delayed or watered down his aims to ensure that he could not put himself above the law or the country. Mr. Trump has learned from that experience to surround himself with supplicants who would instead obey his wishes and bring his words and ideas to life even if they contradict facts, the public interest or the Constitution.
For this reason, Americans would be wise to see this language as a genuine threat, not simply Mr. Trump on a tangent. We should take the painful step of imagining America were his plans and promises to come to pass, to imagine the impacts to our culture, to our economy, to our security, to our shared commitment to the rule of law. » | The Editorial Board * | Saturday, October 26, 2024

Michael Lambert: How Brexit Is Destroying the UK Economy
Oct 26, 2024 | Brexit has been a catastrophic disaster for the UK economy. Every day we see stories in the media about the many problems that Brexit is causing.
The government recently invited the CEOs of various multi-national companies to London to discuss possible investment in the UK. With so much of our infrastructure and so many of our businesses already foreign owned, the benefit for more multi-nationals controlling more of our economy is questionable.
Barriers to trade since the UK left the EU are causing serious and long-lasting damage to our economy and yet the Labour government under Kier Starmer insists that they will be not ever return to the EU and that instead they intend to "tear down barriers to trade", barriers which they have no authority over and cannot tear down.
Keir Starmer continues to refuse to consider agreeing to the EU's offer to allow UK students to take part in limited one- or two-year exchanges with EU students, thereby denying our youth an outstanding opportunity.
If we are ever to return to the EU, it will require a substantial majority of the country to be in favour. Sadly, there are still many people who are stupid enough to argue that Brexit was a good idea and that we are better off out of the EU.
Two commenters to my last video are examples of the extreme stupidity of such people.

Tiny House with Erotic Frescoes Uncovered in Pompeii
THE GUARDIAN: Paintings include one depicting a scantily clad Phaedra, mythological queen of Athens, and her stepson Hippolytus
A tiny house featuring erotic frescoes is the latest discovery in the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Experts say the exquisitely decorated abode, called the House of Phaedra after the mythological queen of Athens, sheds light on the changing architectural styles in the first century AD but is also further proof that the residents of Pompeii had an appetite for sensual art.
The vividly coloured wall paintings include one depicting a sexual encounter between a satyr and a nymph on a bed and one of a scantily clad Phaedra and her stepson Hippolytus, whom, according to Greek legend, she accused of rape after he spurned her advances. Another fresco features gods presumed to be Venus and Adonis. » | Angela Giuffrida in Rome | Friday, October 25, 2024

Tommy Robinson Charged under Terrorism Act before Far-right March in London
THE GUARDIAN: Met says it expects ‘busy day’ on Saturday as Stand Up to Racism and Chris Kaba rallies also planned
The far-right leader Tommy Robinson has been charged under the Terrorism Act and is being held in custody before a planned march of his supporters amid fears of a repeat of violence that erupted when he was imprisoned in 2018.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, handed himself in to Folkestone police station on Friday afternoon where he was charged with failing to provide the pin to his mobile phone under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act. He was bailed to appear in court next month, Kent police said. He was then remanded in custody under a high court direction, the force said.
In July Robinson allegedly refused to give police access to his mobile phone when he was stopped under the Terrorism Act at the Channel tunnel. He had been bailed subject to returning to Folkestone police station.
He is also due to appear at Woolwich crown court on Monday on separate charges of contempt of court for repeating libellous allegations against a Syrian refugee.

Labour ‘Will Drop Plans for Outdoor Smoking Ban’
THE TELEGRAPH: Policy set to be axed after industry opposition amid fears for pubs, according to reports
Plans to ban smoking outside pubs are reportedly being dropped after opposition from the hospitality industry.
Proposals leaked earlier this year suggested the Labour Government would ban smoking in some outdoor areas, such as at restaurants and hospitals, to improve public health.
Concerns were raised over the new rules, which could include bans in beer gardens and outside stadiums.

This is good news. Now Labour should go one step further and abandon that ridiculous, draconian, undemocratic, illiberal generational smoking ban. In a world in which so many young people are into all sorts of extremely unhealthy and damaging drugs like cocaine and pink cocaine, it makes no sense whatsoever. Especially since increasingly fewer young people take up cigarette smoking anyway. – © Mark Alexander

The Obscene Wealth of the Ruling Class & Why You Should Hate Them Even More | Rob Larson | The Majority Report w/ Sam Seder
Oct 24, 2024 | Rob Larson, professor of economics at Tacoma Community College, to discuss his recent book Mastering the Universe: The Obscene Wealth of the Ruling Class, What They Do with Their Money, and Why You Should Hate Them Even More.
Professor Rob Larson then joins, first running through the numbers behind the modern era of wealth inequality and the validity of the parallels with the inequalities of the Gilded Age – from the overwhelming wealth of the top 1% to the minimal holdings of the masses – and the overwhelming social isolation of the upper class via class segregation that defines the stratification of these eras. Expanding on this, Professor Larson walks through the disconnect of the ruling class on the level of the interpersonal (with some strong examples from one Elon Musk) and material, diving deep into how both social institutions (e.g., the media) and economic institutions create (and celebrate) isolated worlds for the uber-wealthy, with boundaries explicitly designed avoid undesirables. Rob, Sam, and Emma then step back and examine the devastating impact this grotesque excess has on the rest of society, particularly in the opportunity cost of the absurd endeavors of the elite, before moving into an expansive conversation on the role of philanthropy in bolstering the power, ego, and wealth of the uber-rich, eventually wrapping up the interview with the central role labor and social organizing must play in the fight to even this playing field.

Muslims in Europe Experiencing ‘Worrying Surge’ in Racism, Survey Finds
THE GUARDIAN: ‘Dehumanising rhetoric’ blamed as almost half of respondents say they recently suffered discrimination
Muslims across Europe are grappling with a “worrying surge” of racism that is being fuelled in part by “dehumanising anti-Muslim rhetoric”, the EU’s leading rights agency has said, as it published a survey in which nearly half of the Muslim respondents said they had recently experienced discrimination.
Published on Thursday by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), the survey of 9,600 Muslims across 13 member states found that racism and discrimination threads through most aspects of their lives.
People reported children being bullied in school, inequalities in accessing job opportunities and prejudice when it comes to renting or buying homes. » | Ashifa Kassam European community affairs correspondent | Thursday, October 24, 2024

Far-right Europe: From Electoral Success to Neo-Nazi Extremism | Java Documentary
Oct 22, 2024 | The extreme right has won the European elections in France, Italy and Belgium and has gained about a quarter of MEPs in the new parliament. The xenophobia, patriarchy, or authoritarianism that they preach are also present in the programs of parties that are not even considered ultra-right. Issues that were thought to be overcome, such as gender violence, the use of firearms or the death penalty, are being reintroduced into the debate.
The documentary Europe: The Rise of the Extreme Right has investigated the xenophobic parties of Sweden, Italy and Spain and explains the reasons for their growth. They cut freedoms, assume power, and attack the rule of law.
This documentary was produced by Corporacio Catalana De Mitjans Audiovisuals and directed by Albert Elfa, Ricard Belis. It was first released in 2019.

US Justice Department Warns Musk over Plans to Give Away Millions in Swing States | DW News
Oct 24, 2024 | To the US now, and a warning from the Justice Department to Elon Musk. You might remember the world's richest man recently announced plans to give away a million dollars every day until the US election to a voter in a swing state.
US media are now reporting that the Justice Department has told Musk's Political Action Committee, or PAC, that this might violate federal law. Musk, who supports Donald Trump, has promoted the prize through his PAC to boost voter registration in states that could decide the election. But it's raised concerns from election law experts and officials over the legality of the prize.

We’re Backing Kamala Harris. She Will Unlock Democracy’s Potential, Not Give In to Its Flaws
THE GUARDIAN — EDITORIAL: The Guardian view on the US presidential election 2024: a Democratic government is the one we need
IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE A WORSE CANDIDATE for the American presidency in 2024 than Donald J Trump. His history of dishonesty, hypocrisy and greed makes him wholly unfit for the office. A second Trump term would erode the rule of law, diminish America’s global standing and deepen racial and cultural divides. Even if he loses, Mr Trump has shown that he will undermine the election process, with allies spreading unfounded conspiracy theories to delegitimise the results.
There are prominent Republicans – such as the former vice-president Dick Cheney – who refused to support Mr Trump owing to the threat he poses. Gen Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff under Mr Trump, calls his former boss a “fascist”. America was founded in opposition to absolute monarchy. The Republican nominee models himself after the leader he most admires: Russia’s autocratic president, Vladimir Putin.
Mr Trump’s authoritarianism may finish US democracy. He has praised and promised to pardon those convicted in the January 6 insurrection. He has suggested bypassing legal norms to use potentially violent methods of repression, blurring the lines between vigilantism, law enforcement and military action, against groups – be they Democrats or undocumented immigrants – he views as enemies. » | Editorial | Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Kamala Harris Denounces Trump as ‘Fascist’ Who Wants ‘Unchecked Power’
THE GUARDIAN: VP gives surprise speech after reports that Trump’s former chief of staff said ex-president repeatedly praised Hitler
Kamala Harris has denounced Donald Trump as a “fascist” who wants “unchecked power” and a military personally loyal to himself after allegations emerged about the former president’s repeatedly-voiced admiration for Hitler.
On Wednesday, the vice-president gave a surprise speech from her Washington DC residence, doing so in the aftermath of reports that John Kelly, Trump’s former chief of staff, recalled how Trump lamented not having generals who swore loyalty to him in the same manner as military commanders served Hitler in Nazi Germany.
“Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable, and in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrails against his propensities and his actions. Those who once tried to stop him from pursuing his worst impulses would no longer be there and no longer be there to rein him in,” Harris said. The Hitler Home Movies | Full History Documentary
Oct 22, 2024 | Away from the terrors of World War II. Away from the battlefields. Away from the concentration camps. Adolf Hitler made his commands. Secluded away, deep in the Bavarian Alps, Hitler, his family and closest allies hid away– issuing orders for armies across Europe while they relaxed, dined and enjoyed an otherworldly peace.
There’s something chilling about the horror of the Nazis being shrouded in mundane moments with a family, but here… captured on film, and restored to incredible quality, these are Hitler’s Home Movies.

Fascism Backed by Big Money Is a Deadly Combo. It Happened in 1930s Germany, and It’s Happening Now
To call the USA a democracy is a joke. A sick joke! The USA doesn’t come even close to a true democracy. The USA is closer to a plutocracy than a democracy. And a gerontological plutocracy at that! Crisis in Venezuela - Maduro's Ongoing Power Struggle | DW Documentary
Oct 23, 2024 | Nicolás Maduro has been president of Venezuela since 2013. He rules the country, which faces grave political and economic problems, with an iron fist. Despite massive criticism from home and abroad, Maduro is clinging to power. Successfully, so far.
Venezuela experienced many dramatic events in recent decades. There was the "Bolivarian Revolution" started by Hugo Chávez, who was elected president in 1998 and introduced a socialist system to the country. There were also attempted coups, violent protests, and severe economic crises — despite the fact that Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.
After the illness and death of Hugo Chávez in 2013, Nicolás Maduro succeeded as president. The former bus driver and socialist set himself the goal of continuing Venezuela's socialist revolution, at any cost.
His rule has been authoritarian. Corruption within Venezuela's state elite and mismanagement are widespread. Years of poor economic decisions have driven the country to ruin under Maduro's presidency. Millions of people in Venezuela are impoverished, and many have fled to neighboring countries.
Yet despite opposition attempts to force him out, Maduro has survived. He was declared the winner in Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections in July - this, although the parliament had tried to remove him from office in 2017 already. People took to the streets to demand his resignation back then and this year again.
However, none of this seems to have affected Maduro - and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the resulting rift between Russia and North America and Europe, the international geopolitical situation has changed. The world is more desperate for oil than ever; and a vast quantity of oil is lying dormant underground in Venezuela.

What Led to Ex-Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries' Sex Trafficking Charges?
BREAKING: Ex-Abercrombie & Finch CEO Mike Jeffries Arrested on Sex Trafficking Charges | BBC News
Oct 22, 2024 | The former CEO of fashion giant Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) and his British partner have been arrested and are facing sex trafficking charges. Mike Jeffries, his partner Matthew Smith, and the couple’s alleged middleman were arrested on Tuesday morning.
The FBI and prosecutor's office have given a press conference explaining the details of the charges. Lawyers for Mr Jeffries and Mr Smith have both previously denied any wrongdoing by both men. Responding to the latest news, Mr Jeffries' lawyer told the BBC: "We will respond in detail to the allegations after the Indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse – not the media." A lawyer for Mr Smith has been approached for new comment. A&F declined to comment on the latest developments.
The FBI opened an investigation last year after the BBC revealed claims that Mike Jeffries and his partner sexually exploited and abused men at events they hosted in their New York residences and hotels around the world.
A BBC investigation found there was a sophisticated operation involving a middleman and network of recruiters tasked with recruiting men for the events. Following the BBC’s reporting, a civil lawsuit was filed in New York accusing Mr Jeffries and Mr Smith of sex-trafficking, rape and sexual assault.
