Burnham Blames Brexit and Thatcher: Is He Right about Britain’s Problems? | Jeremy Vine

September 2, 2026 | In his first Commons address as Prime Minister, Burnham blamed both for years of low growth, saying Britain needs more substantial change on the economy and cost of living.

Supporters say he has a point. They argue Brexit damaged trade, investment and confidence, while decades of privatisation and underinvestment left Britain with weak growth, poor infrastructure and squeezed public services.

Critics say Burnham is looking backwards. They argue Margaret Thatcher left office more than 35 years ago, Brexit happened a decade ago, and the new Prime Minister now needs to focus on solutions rather than blame.

There is also the question of delivery. With bills, food prices, mortgages and energy costs still putting pressure on households, can Burnham really make people feel better off?

So is Burnham right to blame Brexit and Thatcher, or should he stop pointing to the past and prove he can fix the future?


Distance lends perspective. As a one-time huge fan of Thatcher, I have the following to say…

Margaret Thatcher was the architect of many of our economic problems today. She did some things that were very good; it’s true. But it must also be said that she harmed the British economy as well, especially by selling off so many of this country’s valuable assets. As Harold Macmillan said: Thatcher sold off the family silver. This is his actual quote:

“The sale of assets is common with individuals and states when they run into financial difficulties. …

First of all the Georgian silver goes, and then all that nice furniture that used to be in the saloon. Then the Canalettos go.” — Harold Macmillan, November 8, 1985

At the time, it seemed that she was working miracles with the UK economy, but those apparent miracles turned out to be short-term fixes — short-term dreams, but long-term nightmares.

Further, Thatcher (and her buddy, Reagan, in the States) were the root cause of the huge wealth gap that we have today.

The Biggest Oil Deal or Theft at Gunpoint? US Claims Majority Control of Venezuela's Oil Reserves

September 1, 2026 | The U.S. has struck a deal to take majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela's oil reserves, nine months after the U.S. military abducted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in a raid on Caracas and two months after The New York Times revealed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has become the de facto viceroy of Venezuela, effectively controlling Venezuela's finances, the distribution of its natural resources and its government. The new oil deal gives the Department of Defense a 35% stake in a joint U.S.-Venezuelan private company that now holds 100-year leases to 17 oil fields. It also gives the U.S. the right to buy some of the oil produced at cost — a major triumph for the Trump administration as the war on Iran depletes the United States' strategic oil reserves. Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez claims U.S. investment in Venezuela's oil industry will jumpstart the country's floundering economy, but critics, including Venezuelan economist Francisco Rodríguez, say the deal is not only "unfavorable to Venezuela" but also appears to violate the Venezuelan Constitution.

"The whole history around this is extremely shady," adds Rodríguez, who previously led Venezuela's Congressional Budget Office and now teaches at the University of Denver. "It's clear that this is not a deal that any Venezuelan government would have entered into unless this country had been subject to an invasion, and unless its authorities had been held at gunpoint. So, I think we've replaced gunboat diplomacy now for gunpoint diplomacy."

Democracy Now! US Deports Thousands to Countries They Don't Know Under Secretive "Third Country" Deal

September 1, 2026 | As part of its mass deportation campaign, the Trump administration is secretly deporting immigrants to countries that they have no ties to. CNN correspondent Isobel Yeung recently traveled to the Central African Republic, which in recent months has accepted dozens of immigrants who had previously been granted deportation protections because they risk facing torture in their home countries. Despite the fact that the State Department warns U.S. citizens not to travel to the Central African Republic "under any circumstances," the Department of Homeland Security has now deported dozens of immigrants from countries including Afghanistan, Cuba, Russia and Iran to a legal limbo in a country wracked by civil war between Muslim and Christian militias and officially ruled by a Russia-backed authoritarian dictator.

We play excerpts of Yeung's report, which features interviews with immigrants who now live precarious lives in the Central African Republic capital of Bangui, without family, friends or even a common language, and at risk of malaria, extortion and violence. "Many of them did not know where they were going to until they stepped foot on the flight," Yeung tells Democracy Now! They have been placed in temporary lodgings for three months, but after that, continues Yeung, "I don't think anyone knows where they're supposed to go."

According to Third Country Deportation Watch, the United States has signed so-called third-country deportation agreements with as many as 35 governments around the world. Most of the over 20,000 people deported under these agreements have been turned back at ports of entry to Mexico, but an increasing number are being placed on deportation flights and sent to countries like Costa Rica and Ghana, far from their countries of birth. By carrying out this scheme and by threatening other immigrants with the possibility of third-country deportation to coerce them into choosing to "self-deport," the Trump administration "is really attacking and undermining the entire architecture of refugee protection," says Yael Schacher, a co-lead of Third Country Deportation Watch.

LE FIGARO : DISPARITION - Dernier Premier ministre de François Mitterrand, il restera dans l’histoire politique comme « l’ami de trente ans » de Jacques Chirac devenu son rival lors d’une campagne présidentielle de 1995 féroce qui mettra un terme à ses ambitions.

« Le destin, a écrit Édouard Balladur, m’a quatre fois mis dans des positions difficiles : en mai 68, mais je n’étais pas responsable directement de l’action ; en 1973-1974 où, du fait de ma fonction à l’Élysée et du mandat dont m’avait investi Georges Pompidou, j’ai exercé des responsabilités plus importantes qu’à l’ordinaire, ce que l’on m’a reproché ; en 1986-1988 où, comme membre du gouvernement de Jacques Chirac , en charge de tout le secteur économique et financier, j’ai eu la tâche d’assurer le redressement de notre pays avec une très grande liberté d’action ; en 1993-1995 où, premier ministre de la cohabitation, j’ai dû faire en sorte qu’elle se passe bien tout en reprenant, cinq ans après, l’action de redressement et de réforme. » (1)

Curieusement, dans cet ouvrage publié pourtant plusieurs mois après l’élection présidentielle du printemps 1995, Édouard Balladur n’incluait pas, au rang des « positions difficiles » occupées au fil de sa carrière, son échec face à Jacques Chirac qu’il avait alors entrepris de concurrencer dans la course à la magistrature suprême. À croire qu’il s’agissait, dans son esprit, d’une simple péripétie. C’est pourtant à ce moment-là que sa carrière politique, sans vraiment s’achever, s’est enlisée. Une carrière à laquelle cet énarque ayant fait ses débuts au Conseil d’État ne se destinait pas à l’origine, et qui même lui inspirait de la méfiance, mais à laquelle il avait fini par prendre goût. » | Par le Service politique | lundi 31 août 2026

The 10 P.M. Dinner Is a Spanish Tradition. Are People Giving It Up?

THE NEW YORK TIMES: There are signs that Spaniards are eating earlier in the evening. Experts say it could make for a healthier country, but not everyone is ready to part with the custom.

For generations, dinnertime for the Terrazas family, as in many households in Spain, was late. It usually began after 10 p.m. and often stretched past midnight.

But now, Antonio Terrazas, a tax adviser in Madrid, says his family sits down to eat around 9 p.m. When they dine out, they’re also eating earlier, and have noticed their friends are, too.

“At first it was strange. We’d look at each other like, ‘Madre mía, who would believe that we’d be seated at a restaurant and eating at 9 o’clock?” Mr. Terrazas said. “But not anymore.”

In Spain, known for its night-owl energy, a quiet revolution appears to be unfolding in one of its best known cultural institutions: the late-night dinner.

Spaniards have long eaten later than people elsewhere in Europe, a tradition that many see as part of the national identity. Nepal: Search for Survivors in Betrawati

An “incredibly delicate” search operation is ongoing in the town of Betrawati, which was wiped out in Wednesday’s devastating flash flood in Nepal.

Paraic O’Brien reports from where a local grocery store was ripped from the ground, as more bodies are recovered from the shop’s ruins.

The clock on a local bank is stuck at 9.30, roughly the time in the morning that disaster struck.

The death toll in the Nepal flash flood has now exceeded 900, with more than 1,400 people still missing.
